WELCOME ALL TO THE VICTORIA STADIUM FOR OUR LATEST LEAGUE GAME AS WE TAKE ON GLACIS UNITED.

Looking back at our last game, I felt that we started much better than in our previous game against Europa. It was a balanced first half; I would say that we maybe edged it with Marcus and Toscano, our two wide defenders, doing a good job to stop their wingers.

Our opening game of the season was not the desired result or performance, especially in the second half.

The beauty of football is that it is a game of opinions; everyone is entitled to an opinion and I respect them all.

The one opinion that I cannot agree with, though, is that winning the League is not achievable for us this season.

Like in any League in the world, points will be dropped along the way, it is still early days and this League will not be all about Lincoln and Europa this season as there are a number of contenders who will all take points off each other along the way.

Was last weekend a set back?

Absolutely yes, but we are all in this together and its only together we can get to where we want to be. We will be looking to start building some momentum, and that starts tonight.

Some good news came from our Under-23s last Sunday when they beat Bruno’s 6-1 in their opening Intermediate League game. It was a fantastic performance from our young side, which had an average age of just 16.5. The future certainly looks bright – well done boys!

We kept possession well and created some chances to open the scoring.

Because of the number of injuries we have, we had to change things around up front with Gato up top and Coombes coming in behind and they created opportunities, as did Anthony Hernandez who went close.

The second half was a different story.

We started well until they scored from a set-piece and at that stage we lost our composure and before we could settle down again, they hit us with a second goal from a free-kick.

We had a chance to reduce the deficit but we did not take it. Had we done so, we could have got back into the game but instead our opponents were able to extend their lead and then add a fourth goal.

Those of us who have been in the football world for a while like me know how this works; we are at a stage where we are not consistent enough and falling below the levels we are capable of. Having so many injuries, especially in attack, is not helping our cause.

We are trying to get these players back to fitness as quickly as we can but now all we can do is look to build up our confidence levels and play the football that we know we can.

Mons Calpe Favourite Food: I enjoy all sorts of food but my favourite would have to be my grannies lasagne Best experience in football: At my age, I am very fortunate and I have had some incredible experiences already at club and International level, but I think the one that tops the list was when I made my international senior team debut away against Armenia and winning the game was a fantastic experience.

Worst experience: I had tummy

trouble during one game and unfortunately I had a ‘Gary Lineker’ moment!

My role model(s) in life: My dad and Steven Gerrard.

Where do you see yourself in the next few years: I prefer to take small steps and for now my target in the next few years is to work hard to become a regular first-team player both for club and country. I am only 18 years of age and I think I have already achieved a lot.

Mention a player you admire: Trent Alexander-Arnold hence why I wear the number 66 on my shirt.

What can we expect from Lincoln this season: The same as every season to be honest, a hard-working team who will fight every game to win the league and every trophy up for grabs, then get as far as possible in the UEFA Champions League next year.

What advice would you give to young kids who want to do well in football:

I am only 18 years of age and I am still want and need to be advised, but my main advice to young kids who are looking to become successful through football is to always work hard, give it your all, there will be times that you will have to make big sacrifices but at the end it will pay off and remember to always stay humble.

What can we expect from Lincoln in this game: You can expect us to play with passion and fight for every ball as if it is the last; we will keep pushing as a team until the final whistle goes. Always respecting our opponents, we definitely expect to win to put as back on track after a few not so good results lately.

SIX OF THE BEST FOR UNDER-23S WINNING START TO OUR INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE SEASON...

UNDER the blazing sun, our U23s had their first outing in this year’s Intermediate League against Bruno’s Magpies on Sunday evening.

what is ahead in this League but with performances like this I am confident we shall be one of the contenders for this League.

Captained by 18 year-old Ethan Britto, the oldest Lincoln player on the pitch, and with his 17 year-old lieutenants Craig Galliano and Shay Jones in midfield and Julian Del Rio up front, they were surrounded by 16 year-olds all making their debut in this League.

“There is still a long way to go; this is just the start, but rest assured we shall continue to work hard and try to reach a consistently high level of performance.

It was a brilliant performance by our youngsters from start to finish. The first half saw Lincoln moving the ball very well and playing some neat stuff. We managed to score three times within the opening half-an-hour thanks to two goals from Del Rio and a further strike from Galliano.

Bruno’s pulled one back on the half-hour mark with a splendid shot from outside the area by Ashley Rodriguez, but we ended the opening period strongly and almost added to our lead.

“We know that we have to keep working on our fitness levels because there is room for improvement in this aspect, but credit to the boys because they kept going in the hot conditions.”

Our next game in the Intermediate League sees us take on Mons Calpe on Sunday, August 25th (kick-off 8.30pm).

The second half saw the same tempo as the first, although our opponents did see more of the ball. We managed to add three more goals from three sharp counter-attacks as Galliano and Del Rio both added to their tally and Shay Jones also got his name on the scoresheet to give us a convincing opening day victory.

After the game, Head Coach, Malcolm Martin, said he was impressed with the overall performance.

IN THE LATEST IN THIS SERIES, WE FEATURE DENNIS LOPEZ...

RAIN or shine, in Sector B, Row 09, Seat 10 at the Victoria Stadium, every time there is a Lincoln game you will find Dennis Lopez, a man who is said by many to be one of the best, if not the best, centre forwards that the club has ever had, alongside Lee Casciaro.

Dennis was born on 15th March 1967, the sixth in line to the throne of six other siblings, five brothers and one sister.

Born into a footballing family, he was soon kicking the ball at a very young age with his older brothers.

At the age of ten, he began his football journey with Lincoln Red Imps, at the hands of his coach Pepe Berllaque. Two years before, Lincoln Red Imps had just been established as a youth team. In the following years to come the club continued to further establish more teams in the youth categories and it was not long before he began to attract the attention of the club’s older age group coaches and began to play in those older categories.

In those days, there was an agreement between the clubs and the GFA that those clubs who just had youth teams and no senior team were allowed to let their youth players turn out for another senior club. Dennis was one of the players to benefit from this and at the age of just 14 he made his senior debut with Lions.

When Lincoln began their journey in the fourth division at the turn of the 1980s, Dennis remained playing with Lions and later moved to Glacis just for the one season.

It was not until 1983, when he returned to Lincoln Red Imps in the second Division to help the team win the title earn their place in the top-flight of local football.

In our debut season (1984/85) in the First Division, Lincoln won the League Title for the very first time in our history with Dennis in the team leading from the front.

The following season, he left the club and had a three-year spell with St Theresa’s in which they became League Champions in two out of the three seasons Dennis played there. At the time many asked why Dennis would switch from a young promising team like Lincoln to another club.

Many do not know the story but Dennis shared the reason with us and it was to fulfil his late father’s dream at the time, of seeing all the brothers play in the same team together.

As a good son he could not disappoint his father.

Unfortunately, the youngest brother, Clive, was the only one

who did not play in that St. Theresa team, for the simple reason that he was too young at the time.

He eventually returned to Lincoln and help the club win five consecutive League titles before a serious injury sustained at the age of 26 kept him out of action for two years. He returned to play five more years with Lincoln, during which time he got another five title successes under his belt before retiring from playing at the age of 33.

His career saw him top the scoring charts on many occasions and win a plethora of awards. Needless to say that he was also a regular in the national team under the late Eduardo Tellez, and he has nothing but praise for what Eduardo did for local football.

On International duty he had the privilege of playing against the likes of Chelsea, Coventry, Norwich, Crystal Palace and Notts County amongst other German visiting teams.

After his retirement from playing, he returned as assistant coach to work alongside Charlie Cumbo and later Mick McElwee for a total of seven seasons.

In those years he formed part of the technical team that marked the beginning of the unprecedented 14 years consecutive League wins together with cup trebles and doubles.

team that was made up mainly from players of other first division teams, particularly Europa FC who at the time disbanded and relinquished their GFA membership.

The team, under the management of Peter Borge and James Cortes, won the second division championship in their inaugural season and gained promotion to the GFA’s first division.

In their first season in the top-flight, Glacis United clinched a League and Rock Cup double. This was just the beginning of a successful era in which nine further consecutive league championships were won together with other domestic cup wins.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY...

Glacis United were founded in 1964 by Alfredo Sene, Norberto Tosso and Pedro Borge.

Last season saw them finish third from bottom in the first division having won seven of their 27 League games.

The new campaign started with a heavy defeat at the hands of FC Bruno’s Magpies in their first game as they fielded a very youthful line-up with an eye very much to the future.
