DYLAN VIAGAS President Touching upon our last game with Glacis United, we are very satisfied with our performance. We saw an extremely organised Lincoln team who, most importantly, managing to create many scoring opportunities. It was very gratifying to see the team end up with three 17 yearolds on the pitch with Julian del Rio in the first XI and then young Craig “Chori” Galliano and Shay Jones coming on from the bench. Despite still having many important players injured, we are starting to see these players slowly and surely returning to full training. It appears Lee Casciaro will probably be the first one to return to full duties after almost three months recovering from his hamstring injury. We saw him return with the Under-23s last week where he played 15 minutes and reports from the medical team are very optimistic. I must take this opportunity to welcome Mustafa Yahaya to the Lincoln Family. He was a last-minute signing just before the transfer window deadline. Opportunities whereby a club can secure a player of the calibre of Mustafa don’t come up all that often, so we were delighted to be able to bring him on board. A quick note on our Under 23s, we saw them play their third game of the season last week with another very convincing 3-0 win against College 1975. It was satisfying to see more under-16 players being given the opportunity at this level. This was the case for Ellis Wilson, who turned 16 on matchday and could not have a better debut with the third goal. Finally, I must end with the unfortunate and sad news of the passing of Mrs Hortencia Parody, mother of Albert
Overall we were well pleased with our performance against Glacis United in our last National League game. We dominated every aspect of the match, managed to move the ball around well and, essentially, we created a lot of scoring opportunities, something we lacked in our previous games. As the game progressed, we had the opportunity to test out a variety of new tactics and options that we have been working on for a few weeks now in training and I must say we are very happy with the result. It was also important to be able to rest some of our key players and to give our youngsters the opportunity to step in and prove there is space for them in this team. The truth is we were delighted with their performance and if they keep playing at the level they played at, further opportunities will surely present itself to them. For today’s game we want to continue on the same lines and continue with the same momentum. We know for a fact College 1975 have much improved from last year and therefore we need to go out from the first minute, concentrated, willing and ready to do the job at hand as we look to add to our points tally. We have seen them play this year and they are a team that will battle for every ball from the first whistle to the last. To our fans, there is no need to panic if you do not see some of our International players on the team sheet tonight. They are not injured; it’s just that the technical team have decided to give them a rest after the international games, in which they gave their all and did us proud for the national team.

Mention a player you admire: Maldini and Sergio Ramos What can we expect from Lincoln this season: We can expect a winning team that once again wants to become champions with good performance and a good attitude. What advice would you give to young kids who want to do well in football: Hard work and never stop believing in yourself; with those attributes’ dreams do come true. In football you do not know what is round the corner and things change from one day to another What can we expect from Lincoln in this game: I am sure we can expect a very complicated game for the simple reason that every team always wants
to beat the champions. In principle I think we are the better team and if we go out with the right mindset and attitude and do our job we should win the game. What are your views from our previous game against Glacis United: I think we did everything right that game and our game plan worked just like we wanted. LINCOLN Red Imps swept to our first victory of the season with a resounding 8-0 triumph over Glacis United. We were in ruthless form as we created plenty of opportunities, however it took us until almost the half-hour mark to finally break the deadlock against our determined opponents. It was Lopes who opened the scoring before Coombes doubled our advantage as the interval approached. Right on the stroke of half-time, Molina made it 3-0 to give us a commanding lead to take into the second half. After the restart it took us just five minutes to add another goal to our tally when Molina notched his second of the game. Within ten minutes youngster Del Rio had added his name to the scoresheet before Britto made it 6-0. Into the closing ten minutes and Molina completed his hat-trick before Del Rio added another late on. THIRD WIN IN A ROW FOR UNDER-23S COMMANDING VICTORY IN THE INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE FOR OUR YOUNGSTERS...
OUR YOUNG team maintained their winning start to the Intermediate League campaign with a deserved 3-0 victory over College 1975 last week. It was good to see Lee Casciaro get minutes under his belt as he returns from injury, whilst Ellis Wilson was introduced into the action as a second half substitute on his 16th Birthday and responded by getting his name on the scoresheet. Our youthful team put in another energetic and impressive display, which certainly bodes well for the future. Meanwhile Jamie Bosio has joined up with our Intermediate League team as he recovers from injury that has kept him sidelined for almost a year. “It has been a long road to recovery
and it feels like it has lasted an eternity,” he admitted. “There is still some more progress to be made for a full recovery but at least I can now see the light at the end of the tunnel. “Under a controlled environment, I am back on the training ground with the objective to slowly build my fitness to finally be able to play a game. “At the moment my only objective is to make a full recovery. I have to be patient and continue with my recovery plan and not do anything that can set me back from returning to action. “When I first spoke to Malcolm Martin, the U23 Head Coach, the idea was for me to use my experience, on and offthe-pitch, to help guide and advise the younger players and I only hope that I can live up to that expectation.”

Head Coach, Malcolm Martin, added: “To have Jamie join us at Lincoln and have him in my team is a privilege. Let’s not under estimate what he can bring the club; for our young players to have the opportunity to play alongside an International player with his qualities and experience, this can only be described as a win-win situation, not only for our young players but also for the club. “This has already made itself evident in training in where he is constantly giving advice and support to the players around him.”

IN THE LATEST IN THIS SERIES, WE FEATURE CHARLIE CUMBO... CHARLIE Cumbo, born on October 22nd 1949, has gone on to dedicate over half-a-century to football, a total of 57 years and counting, to be more precise. His travels began as a player back in 1962, playing for St Jago’s School in the third division at the age of 13 years of age. Soon after, at the age of 16, he attracted the attention of Gibraltar United, where he played his football in the first division for the next 16 years until the age of 32 when he retired as a player from top-flight football. During his football career, Charlie not only played a number of International games for Gibraltar, but also had the honour of being the national team captain. Just before retiring from top-flight football, Charlie, a former fireman in the Admiralty Fire Service, was already determined to continue his involvement in football and
became one of the founder members of the Essential Services League, a league that consisted of teams of all the Essential Service Organisation in Gibraltar, such as the Police, Fire Service, Port Dept and eventually included the Army, Navy and RAF. As well as managing that League, Charlie continued to play football for a few more years with the Admiralty Fire Service. If that was not enough, in 1970, Charlie together with Pepe Apap and Peter Martinez, became the founder members of what today we know as the Youth Football Leagues. For 11 years, from 1989 to 2000, Charlie became part of the GFA set-up as a coach and worked across with all the National Team squads. During this time, he completed all his coaching badges and was one of the first Gibraltar coaches to attain the UEFA ‘B’ Licence. In 2000 he joined Lincoln Red Imps and became the senior team Head Coach together with Andrew Serra. His policy of introducing younger players to the first-team immediately paid off, with the likes of Roy Chipolina and Lee Casciaro (just to mention two) breaking through. They gave a breath of fresh air to the team at the beginning of the era in which Lincoln Red Imps went on to enter into the history books and dominate local football. He stood down from the first-team in 2004 and handed over the reins to Mike McElwee who continued from where he left off, taking the club to another level. During the following year he took over a team from the PreLeague, a group of boys from the age of four. He continues to manage and develop that team and to date many of those players who started out with him continue with Charlie. Today this team is in the Under-16 Youth League. Charlie Cumbo has given outstanding service to local football and is a wealth of knowledge on the subject.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY... The club was founded, initially as a futsal team in 2013, but since 2015 they have been playing as part of the GFA League, spending all of their time as members of the second division prior to this summer’s restructuring of the domestic game. Being led by Chairman, Nolan Bosio, prior to this summer when Joseph Mir took over the role as a rebuild of the playing staff took place in preparation for the added demands of the new National League. This also included establishing an under-23 side to compete in the Intermediate League as the club looks to build some solid foundations for future growth and development.
