As you are all aware, it’s been a very busy festive period for the Executive Board finding a suitable candidate to replace Victor Afonso as Head Coach of the Senior Team.

After interviewing a number of candidates and taking many issues into consideration, German Crespo was believed to be the best man for the job at this stage of the season.

He took charge of the team on January 3rd and since then has worked tirelessly and determinedly to root his concepts and philosophies into the team ahead of the beginning of the second round of The National League.

Unfortunately, we dropped six points in the first round against our direct rivals and we now have no margin for errors going forward. It’s paramount we find our best performance in every game starting today if we want to keep our title aspirations intact.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Malcolm Martin who stepped up as Interim Coach for our last game against a very well-organised Manchester 62 and secured the three points with a good performance from the team.

Last Friday saw the Gibtelecom Rock Cup draw and we have been paired up against College 1975 FC. Rest assured that this is a trophy that we are also determined to win this season. The last time this trophy came home was at the end of the 2015/16 season and we believe its time it came home again.

In other areas, our Under-23s played on Tuesday and what a game they had!

After being three goals down against Europa, with sheer determination they managed to draw level in stoppage time to secure a 3-3 draw.

Our ladies finished the year nine points clear of second position, Lions FC, and with just 12 points left up for grabs, we sit in pole position to retain the League title this season.

Unfortunately, we were struck by a serious knee injury to Joseph Chipolina in our last game before the Christmas break against Manchester 62. It will sadly see him out of action for the rest of the season. Needless to say, we shall make every effort to assist Joe in his recovery so he is back in the team for the start of next season.

LINCOLN RED IMPS 2 MANCHESTER 62 0 GIBRALTAR NATIONAL LEAGUE – 19.12.2019

WITH MALCOLM MARTIN IN CHARGE OF THE TEAM ON AN INTERIM BASIS, LINCOLN RED IMPS WENT INTO THE WINTER BREAK ON A WINNING NOTE COURTESY OF A 2-0 VICTORY OVER A DETERMINED AND WELL-ORGANISED MANCHESTER 62 OUTFIT. We took the lead on the quarter-hour mark when Kike got his name on the scoresheet and whilst we played some neat football at times during the remainder of the first half, we were unable to add to our lead.

There was a blow on the stroke of half-time when Joseph Chipolina was forced out of the action with what appeared to be a serious injury.

It was a similar story after the break as we were on top for long periods but found our opponents resolute to keep us at bay. The second goal that we needed finally arrived with 15 minutes to go when substitute, Ramon, was on hand to double our advantage.

The victory saw us head into the festive period in good heart and ready for the battles that lie ahead under a new Head Coach.

OUR YOUNG Under-23 side showed tremendous character to bounce back from three goals down to draw 3-3 with Europa on Tuesday evening.

Our opponents fielded three over-aged players, including national team goalkeeper, Dayle Coleing, and started the game with purpose to build up a commanding lead, but we fought back with Julian Del Rio bagging a brace and then Leeroy Marquez netted a stoppage time leveller.

It maintained our unbeaten record in the Intermediate League.

A MESSAGE FROM MALCOLM MARTIN FIRSTLY, I would like to thank the Executive Board for the opportunity and placing their trust in me as Interim Coach for our last game against Manchester 62. My thanks also need to go out to the players for their respect and making life easy for me during the time I worked with them.

At the end of the game I must admit that I was pleased with the performance. The players kept to the game plan from start to finish. We kept possession and kept the ball on the ground for the majority of the time. We were patient when in possession, we moved the ball around well and quickly, our movements off the ball and into space were continuous and our decision-making was of a high quality, all this combined together allowed us to enjoy our football and most importantly allowed us to create a lot of scoring opportunities mostly created down the wings.

WELCOME GERMAN THE CLUB officially announced at the start of this month the appointment of Antonio German Crespo Sanchez (known as German Crespo) as senior team Head Coach until the end of the season.

The 45 year-old has previously coached Real Jaen CF in Tercera Division in Spain, where he guided the team to the 2B play-offs by winning their regional group league with a record 101 points, an unprecedented figure for that league.

In front of us and typical of David Wilson [Manchester 62 Head Coach], we found a very well-organised team in defence and trying to break on the counter-attack.

Fortunately, when we lost the ball going forward, we always managed to recover our position and mindset quickly into a defensive role that resulted in us conceding very few scoring opportunities.

Overall, a narrow scoreline that based on our performance should have been slightly greater.

“Firstly, I would like to thank the club for this great opportunity,” he said. “I am very conscious that I have signed for a team with a massive track record and I am here with the sole intention of continuing to make history with this great club.

“I am aware that we are at a very crucial stage of the season with all still to be played for and my goal is to take this club to the position that they deserve to be by the end of the season, and that is to be League Champions.”
