I suppose you will all agree with me, the start cannot be more exciting. We finished the League last season with a Europa v Lincoln match that was the title decider, we faced each other again last Sunday in the Pepe Reyes Cup and today here we are for yet another nailbiting experience that signals for us the start of the 2019/20 League campaign for both clubs.

Unfortunately, the game last Sunday did not go our way but those things happen in football, especially when two very good sides face each other. Needless for me to say that we need to congratulate Europa FC on their win.

We are confident that we will be able to put Sunday’s game behind us and focus on today’s challenge with a new frame of mind. This has just started and it’s going to be a very long season for all teams.

Although we still have a lot of injuries, we have an excellent squad and we expect that any player that comes in and wears the Lincoln shirt to perform as well as any other. We have lost player (more players than desirable) to clubs in Spain and we have brought in new

signings that are still adapting to our environment and into the team.

We are trying to speed this integration process as fast as we can so the players learn and understand the Lincoln philosophy and what football in Gibraltar is all about, but the reality is that this process takes time. This not only happens in local football; it tends to happen at every level of the game when players move to new teams in different countries.

Even though it’s the first game of the season, let’s not ignore the importance of it. There are three very important points that we want to have in the bag at the full-time whistle, especially with the introduction of the Head to Head Rule for this season. We want to start this season in the same manner we finished the last, with the same standard of performance we achieved and know that we are capable of.

I hope you all enjoy the game and that we can celebrate the result we all crave at the end...

Name: Roy Chipolina Place of Birth: London Date of Birth: 20/01/1983 Age: 36 Hobbies: With work and football commitments I don’t think I have any hobbies other than spending time with my family. I love playing with my boys and now that they are a little older, I’m back on the PS4.

Previous Clubs: None Favourite Food: I’m quite easy to please in the food category but if had to pick I would probably go for a nice steak or Chinese food. I can’t live without cheese toasties, though.

Best Experience in football: I have been lucky enough to have had many fantastic experiences in football.

Domestically it’s clearly beating Celtic with Lincoln and internationally beating Armenia away, which was our first competitive International win. Both were historic results and moments which I will cherish forever.

Worst experience: Losing the League a couple of seasons back in the manner we did.

My role model(s) in life: Dad, Thierry Henry and Ian Wright.

Where do you see yourself in the next few years? I plan on being involved in football. In what capacity I don’t know. I need to undertake my coaching badges and then see what opportunities are available. I have my own philosophy and ideas and want to be involved and assist in developing Gibraltar football.

Mention a player you admire: Currently playing I would have to say Cristiano Ronaldo, mainly because of his dedication and work ethic. Even at the age of 34 and after all he has achieved he is still training and working harder than ever whilst setting the highest standards. The perfect example of what it takes to be an elite football player.

What can we expect from Lincoln this season: Lincoln will be as competitive as it’s always been. We know a tough season lies ahead and it will take the same commitment and dedication we showed last season. We have a very strong squad and the battle for a starting spot is fierce. I cannot guarantee we will win but I will tell you that we will be working hard daily on growing as a team and as a club. We only have one goal and that is to win.

What advice would you give to young kids who want to do well in football: We keep saying football in Gibraltar changed the moment we joined UEFA

and now FIFA. We have all the opportunities to develop and follow a path to do well or even becoming a professional player something that many past and few present football local players never had. But one thing that shouldn’t change when it comes to our young boys and girls wanting to do well is that first and foremost, love the game dream big and have fun. Only then will you to want to learn progress and develop. I could throw the usual words of commitment dedication and sacrifice around which yes they are key to success but never forget the reason why you put all that work in, in the first place.

What can we expect from Lincoln in today’s game: There is a big mutual respect but never any love lost in these games. You can expect us to be physical, committed and disciplined throughout.

We must win the battle if we are to win the game.

LINCOLN RED IMPS 0 EUROPA FC 1 PEPE REYES CUP – 12.08.2019

AN EARLY GOAL FROM LIAM WALKER WAS ENOUGH TO CLINCH THE PEPE REYES CUP FOR EUROPA LAST WEEKEND IN WHAT WAS AN EVENLY-MATCHED CONTEST. It was our opponents who made the brighter start and they were rewarded when Walker’s strike found the net with just four minutes on the clock.

As we looked to hit back straight away, Alvarez went close but in truth it was Europa we created the better chances in the opening exchanges of the first half as we looked to get into our stride.

With the first half coming to a close, Gato went close on a couple of occasions but we found ourselves trailing as we went into the second period.

Having created a couple of early chances after the restart, we had Roy Chipolina to thank for an important block before we rattled the woodwork on the hour-mark.

Despite our best efforts, we were unable to find an equaliser and we went down to a 1-0 defeat in the season’s curtain-raiser.

THE LINCOLN RED IMPS

IN THE FIRST OF THE SERIES, WE HEAR FROM MICK MCELWEE...

AFTER being introduced to Charlie Head by a mutual friend, I was lucky to join a Lincoln Red Imps team which was already on its way to claiming its first league title in 1985.

Charlie Head and Charlie Polson had started Lincoln Red Imps with a very clear idea of the type of football they wanted to play and it was an attacking style which relied on width, depth and a never-say-die attitude.

That team went on to win six more Leagues, dominating Gibraltar football in the late 80s and early 90s. What a privilege to make friends with and play football with players like Stephen Head, Mario Vera, Andrew Serra, the late Wilfred Gavito, Ian Payas, Frank Barton, Terence Polson, Francis Caruana, Derek Alman and Denis Lopez amongst many others.

It was during this period that Stephen Head asked me to help out with the junior side of the club and I started coaching the future stars of Lincoln Red Imps.

With the junior teams we tried to develop them to play like their senior counterparts – a mixture of individual creativity and brilliance and team structure and identity. Looking back now, those junior teams were laying the foundations for what was to come.

I played my last first team match for Lincoln in the Rock Cup Final of 1994. After that I played a couple of seasons with the reserves before hanging up my boots.

My Lincoln career then re-started in 2004 when I was asked to take over the coaching of the first-team which had just won the League, Rock Cup and Senior Cup treble. The team was already set up to win and I was truly blessed to inherit a group of players who were far ahead of all their peers.

Not only that, Denis Lopez was helping me run the team and his knowledge of not only our players but also all the opponents we came up against was second-to-none. With that combination it would have been truly impossible for us to fail and the players set out to break the Glacis record of nine League titles in a row.

They achieved that and some more for good measure. When Denis Lopez decided to step down, Stephen Head took his place and my job was made easier than ever just keeping the Lincoln machine ticking over. By the time I stepped down in 2014 Denis, Stephen and all the players had made me look like a miracle-worker when in fact I was just filling in the

team sheets, sitting on the bench during matches and enjoying the show.

For a decade, from 2004 until 2014, the players maintained their incredible standards and winning culture bagging ten League titles, 8 Rock Cups and 7 Senior Cups. Beyond that, I would like to think that they had fun and enjoyed their football. And beyond that, and perhaps most importantly, the players were able play the Lincoln style of football which Charlie Polson and Charlie Head had advocated from the outset of the club’s beginnings.

After stepping down in 2014 as the UEFA era and the need for full-time professional coaching for the club beckoned, I later rejoined the coaching staff in April 2016 to assist Julio Ribas until finally stepping back down in May 2017.

Thanks to all the players I played with, all the players I coached and all the people who helped all the players and coaches whilst I was in charge.
