SINCE MY LAST ADDRESS IN THE MATCH PROGRAMME FOR THE UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE QUALIFIER AGAINST RANGERS IN SEPTEMBER, A LOT HAS HAPPENED OVER THE WEEKS THAT HAVE FOLLOWED.
This is being a mammoth task on a weekly basis and I would sincerely like to thank all those involved at the club for their efforts and hard work in managing to secure training pitches week in, week out. Today is our fourth League game of the season and, overall, we must be satisfied with our performances so far this season. Just before the International break we faced Europa FC and what a game that was! I think it is only appropriate that I start by congratulating the Gibraltar national team for winning Group D2 of the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday evening. It’s an event that will surely go down in the history books of Gibraltar football. As for the start of the League campaign, the ball finally began to roll after many issues were resolved concerning the testing of players and protocols being implemented for a safe return to football. One of our main issues, as is the case for all other teams at the moment, is the availability and the difficulty we are having securing training venues in Spain due to the restrictions of movement over the border at this present moment in time.
It ended in a 2-2 draw after many goalscoring opportunities for both teams during the game. It proved, as anticipated, that these two teams are on a par with each other in every aspect of the game. On the negative side, I believe we have had too many injuries in such a small space of time. Joseph Chipolina is still on the road to recovery from his serious knee injury last season, Anthony Hernandez injured himself against Europa and in recent weeks both Lee Casciaro and Ethan Britto have been sidelined. I THINK it’s a good time to return. The club needs stability and recent changes of manager have not helped to give that impression. From a personal point of view, I was honoured to be asked to help and I’m giving it my best shot.
each and every one of us to follow the guidelines both here in Gib and in Spain to ensure we are protecting ourselves and others and reducing the risk of transmission. This is the responsibility we all carry with us at this time.
It is clear to see that the quality of the technical team which we have at the club is extremely high. My job is clear but I will have the back-up of a team of brilliant coaches, strength and conditioning experts and physios as well as the club admin team. The infrastructure of the club which supports the team is excellent and gives us a really solid foundation on which to build.
It was fantastic to see the national team do so well in the UEFA Nations League and I would like to congratulate everyone involved, particularly Julio and the players plus all of the personnel linked to the team for their efforts and achievements.
The squad at moment is very strong; we have a good team spirit and togetherness within the group. There is an emphasis on having more local players than in recent years, which is also a healthy and positive development. However, it is going to take time to get the team playing exactly how we want them to, but we have started the process. Although I know or have worked with a lot of the players in the squad, only a
small number have played in teams longterm managed by me, so it will take time as we get to know each other. At the moment with Covid-19 issues, training especially has been disrupted. Finding facilities is a continuous challenge for the club, but the behindthe-scenes staff are doing a brilliant job. Other than that, it is the responsibility of
From our point of view, our players are well looked after whilst away with the squad and any minutes they play at International level representing Gibraltar are to be cherished from a personal and sporting viewpoint. It enhances each players’ experience and they will return to the club better players for sure. THEOPPOSITION FC BOCA JUNIORS GIBRALTAR | 22.11.2020 MONS CALPE SC | 28.11.2020 There have been big changes both on and off-the-field for FC Boca Juniors since last season and the current campaign has seen them win one and lose two of their opening three League games. That victory came in emphatic fashion with a 6-1 success over College 1975, which included a hat-trick from summer arrival, Wall, whilst the season began with a 3-1 reverse at the hands of St. Joseph’s.
WE COMPLETE the month of November with fixtures against FC Boca Juniors and Mons Calpe.
Their last game before the International break ended in a single-goal defeat at the hands of FC Bruno’s Magpies. 12 months ago we beat FC Boca Juniors 81 before our final game of the 2019/2020 season before its premature end saw us run out 6-0 winners in the Rock Cup.
Our final fixture in November sees us take on Mons Calpe. They have started the campaign with two wins and a defeat from their opening three League encounters. The season got underway with a hardearned 1-0 victory over Glacis United, but they were brought back down to earth in their next game with a heavy 50 reverse at the hands of St. Joseph’s. Their last game before the International break saw them back on track with a 6-0 triumph over College 1975, which included a four-goal haul from Diaz. Last season we beat them 2-0 in the League at the end of October and a similar result would be most welcome when we meet again on November 28th. IMAGES | Neil Wilson.

LATESTACTION A round-up of our opening three League games…
WE STARTED the League season in unforgiving fashion against College 1975 as we ran out convincing 8-0 winners. The star of the show was Kike who hit four goals, but it was Tjay De Barr who opened the scoring with a goal after just nine minutes. We went in at the break four goals to the good and hit four more in the second half, with Lopes bagging a brace and Kyle Casciaro completing the scoring late on. Our next challenge saw us come up against FC Bruno’s Magpies and our opponents proved difficult to break down during the opening period despite us having more of the possession. The breakthrough finally arrived just before the hour-mark when Lopes found the net and it wasn’t long before Kike doubled our advantage. It gave us a cushion which allowed us to relax a bit more and the crucial third goal came from the boot of the in-form
Kike as he made it 3-0 and secure a hard-earned three points. The final game before in the International break saw us pit our wits against rivals, Europa FC. In what was another full-blooded and committed encounter, the game came alive on the stroke of half-time when we fell behind only to level matters moments later through Kike to go in at the break on level terms. A coolly-despatched penalty from Kike put us in front with just under 20 minutes to go and it looked as though we were going to see the game out as we battled hard to keep our opponents at bay as they chased a leveller. Unfortunately deep into stoppage time our resistance was broken and we had to settle for a point from a 2-2 draw to leave us in third place in the early table with seven points to our name from the opening three League games.
