Executive Director’s Message Dear APCH Community, I look forward to the creation of this newsletter every Fall. This project is a great opportunity to update you, our supporters and friends, on the remarkable moments you make possible for our members, to show you in story and pictures how much positive impact your commitment to A Place Called Home makes on our community. It is also a time for our staff to reflect, and celebrate, the year’s work and the incredible growth and achievements of the young people we serve. As I write this, we are eight months into the COVID-19 crisis and our temporary campus closure. As you know, APCH quickly mobilized to respond to urgent and ongoing needs of young people and families struggling with poverty. With your support, we created a Family Resource Depot to safely deliver groceries, household necessities, books, art supplies and even musical instruments to local households on a weekly basis. That effort has provided more than 350,000 meals to date and has been a lifeline to hundreds of families in dire need. Your commitment to our mission made this possible. The talented and creative team at APCH also managed to take our campus experience online! Since April, the APCH Programs Hub has been providing our members with daily access to our proven programs via dozens of remote learning opportunities. Every member has access to daily tutoring, mental health counseling, immersive arts programming, athletics and intensive college and career preparation support. We are keeping our members engaged, inspired and focused on their very bright futures and because we are not bound by physical limitations, we have even welcomed new members from our lengthy waiting list! 2020 ushered in more challenges than any of us could have predicted or prepared for, but we’re still here. And we’re not going anywhere. I hope you are filled with joy as you read through the following pages. I hope you feel your own power and influence in the positive effect you, as a member of the APCH family, have in the lives of our young people. Thank you for taking action with us. In the face of tremendous adversity, our APCH community - our members and families, our donors, our staff and Board of Directors, our volunteers and community partners - we remain connected, resilient, rooted in purpose and full of hope.

Board Chair’s Message Nearly 30 years ago, Debrah Constance founded A Place Called Home to give young people in South Central a safe place to go after school. The premise was simple. It was a place to be safe from gang violence and chaos, where kids could get help with their homework, have a meal and feel free to relax and just be a kid. Our agency and our programmatic offerings have grown exponentially and dramatically evolved over the years, and 27 years later APCH has helped thousands of Angelenos break the cycle of poverty to achieve their own big dreams. When the COVID-19 crisis hit we were forced to make a very difficult decision to temporarily shut down our campus to our community. Place has always been a key component of A Place Called Home and, to be honest, we struggled with how best to sustain our positive impact without being on campus, without holding sacred space for our members and their families. This crisis challenged our APCH staff and Board of Directors to create new models for program delivery and pivot to offering additional services to meet the most urgent needs. When I reflect on all that has happened this year, I am in awe of all that we managed to accomplish together, with your help. I am honored to chair the APCH Board of Directors, a group of amazing volunteers who believe that a Los Angeles that celebrates and nourishes our entire community is a better, more just, and much more beautiful city. Thank you for your commitment to our mission, our members and to the future of Los Angeles.

Founded in 1993 as a safe space for young people facing poverty and systemic adversity, APCH provides a safe, nurturing environment with proven programs in arts, education and wellness for the young people in South Central Los Angeles to help them improve their economic conditions, and develop healthy, fulfilling and purposeful lives.

APCH Responds to the Pandemic Within a week of Covid-19 closing our physical campus, we adapted all programs, outreach and events to online platforms. • 70+ education and enrichment classes offered weekly • Hundreds of members and families actively engaged from home • 350,000 meals and counting distributed via our new Family Resource Depot • Nearly 100 college scholars receiving scholarships and wraparound support

Health, Nutrition, & Well-Being At A Place Called Home, we provide nourishment for the mind, body, and spirit through all of our programs, including mental health counseling, nutrition/meal service, urban agriculture, and athletics.
Nutrition & Urban Agriculture In December 2019, members of our Teen Hospitality and Catering class hosted a culminating tea party at the end of the semester. The members curated a complete menu that included passion fruit lemonade, assorted tea sandwiches, and of course, a salad topped with the famous APCH poppy seed dressing! This event was a special opportunity for our members to utilize the skills they learned during the semester and gain real-world experience to prepare them for careers in the culinary industry. “It felt like we had our own café at APCH! I liked being able to act as a hostess and come up with a menu, too.” – Maria, Age 16
Athletics The APCH Athletics department received funding from the Play Equity Fund at the LA 84 Foundation, Spaulding, and the NBPA to refurbish the basketball court. The brand new court was installed in August 2020, complete with new lines, and a shockabsorbent floor! This new court will allow us to serve 50-60 members per Athletics class and add new sports including tennis and field hockey to our programming! We can’t wait to get back on campus and back in action!

Arts & Creative Expression Creative expression is fundamental to youth development, and at APCH our members have a multitude of opportunities which ignite their curiosity, inspire their imaginations and ultimately guide them to become arts citizens. Whether they become professionals or just admirers, we aim for all members to understand that the benefits of creativity and artistic expression can fill them for the rest of their lives.
First Fridays APCH kicked off 2020 with the launch of our new community night, First Fridays. This event began in January as a way to bring impactful programming to the South Central community. Held on the first Friday of every month, First Fridays is an event that provides our member families with fun, food, and a complimentary film screening--all right here in South Central in our wonderful Bridge Theater! This exciting program is a cross-collaboration between all of our Arts Departments and every First Fridays has a unique and specially designed preshow of work from
our very own APCH members in Dance, Theater, Music, Visual Art and Digital Media. Together with our Social Enterprise and Nutrition programs, we provide a wonderful space for the community to gather. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we moved First Fridays online starting in May. We adapted our event to the virtual space and encouraged family gatherings at home by screening new and exciting movies from our partners, and delivering popcorn and snacks to our members’ homes before the show.
Visual Arts This year, our Comic Art & Literacy Expo went virtual, and let’s just say… it was Marvel-ous! We were joined by some fantastic panelists including

creatives from Sony Pictures Animation, and the creator of Cartoon Network’s We Bare Bears and the voice actor behind the show’s character “Grizz”. In addition to a fun-filled day of panels and featured exhibitors, thanks to a group of incredible donors, we delivered hundreds of goody bags filled with comics, books, games, and more to our members!
Theater The APCH Theater Department has started a brand new Saturday program called ACT@APCH (Advanced Classes in Theater). Adding to our growing roster of Saturday programming, the new ACT program gives our members professional level theater workshops and rehearsals, bringing in guest speakers and professional artists to help take their acting to the next level! In September 2020, members of the ACT @ APCH program ventured into the virtual world and put on two live-streamed performances of Qui Nguyen’s Alice in Slasherland.

Dance Despite the transition to virtual learning, the APCH Dance department is still “en pointe”! Nearly 80 members are keeping their dancing skills sharp through our weekly online programming that includes classes in ballet, hip hop, and more! In September, our APCH dancers even came together for a showstopping virtual dance concert that featured members of our Littles and Pre-Dance Company, Jazz, Ballet, and Dance Company classes!

Music
We are beyond excited and proud of this year’s Berklee School of Music 5-week Summer Intensive Awardees - Angel and David!
Angel is studying flute as her primary instrument and David the Electric Bass, both are amazing musicians with a dedication to music that is inspirational to the Music Team at APCH. Despite the complication of COVID-19, both David and Angel completed the Summer Intensive and went on to continue fine tuning their craft through live streaming performances, including a feature in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Philanthropy award show!
Educational Services Educational Services is committed to providing members with the academic support, engaging curricula, and guidance to empower them to be confident life-long learners. This past year was filled with diverse programming – academic intervention, analysis

of current events, exploration of Latin history and culture, hands-on STEM and architecture activities – that challenged members to grow as unique human beings with powerful voices who will impact our world.

Teen & Young Adult Services GirlPower and Journey Ana’s growth through GirlPower
APCH offers rites of passage programs for members seeking personal mastery through community. These cohort-based programs provide members with weekly activities focused on civic engagement, career inspiration and unique confidence-boosting experiences. Growing up, Ana struggled with speaking up and stuttered under pressure. Determined to change this, she joined GirlPower (GP) in 2016 and used every opportunity to develop her voice. With peers by her side, Ana performed a powerful spoken word piece in front of hundreds of APCH supporters last year during the GirlPower Awards Luncheon. Her words are now heard and spoken with courage. Ana is the first in her family to attend college this fall and hopes to uplift her community by becoming a social worker.
Civics & Community Engagement Teens Visit Washington D.C.!
In November 2019, five APCH teens spent a week in Washington D.C. with the Close Up Foundation! Close Up is a civics education organization that encourages young people to participate in their civic affairs and government. The teens met students from around the nation, engaged with policy makers on Capitol Hill, and visited monuments and memorials. After the trip, Eskimberlet reflected on the impact of the experience stating, “It gave me an opportunity to become more invested in politics. As a person of color, I am able to bring forth ideas from a different perspective which can help impact decisions that could help improve our country.”

Teen & Young Adult Services
Professional Readiness & Employment Program (P.R.E.P) Our Vocational Training Scholarship & Stipend Program offers members who have the courage and desire to seek success through non-traditional paths. V.T.S.S.P. provides a unique, customized support for those who want to obtain vocational careers and/or certifications. Career Guidance, Academic Support, Case Management, Financial Assistance, and Career Placement. Despite the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic ushered in, APCH was still able to engage teen members in a 4-week, 100-hour externship with DBS bank. “I learned that women are BOSSES, we get things done! This internship also helped me undertsand what I really want to do with my career.” - Cryseida, APCH Member The incredible executives at DBS Bank’s Los Angeles office worked with APCH members through video conferencing to engage them in lessons on communication, team operations and goal setting, as well as strong financial habits and networking skills. This competitive externship gave our members the opportunity to grow and learn so much in a short period of time because of the quality time and focused attention they received in every interaction with the awesome leadership team at DBS Bank.
L.I.F.E. Mentoring Joseph has been a member of APCH for almost 6 years. He started as a freshman and was full of energy. Every day he walked into the teen trailer with his big curly hair and bright wide eyes, full of excitement and laughter. Soon staff realized that he was masking his fears with comical commentary and charm. He admitted being afraid of becoming an adult because he was fearful he would fail at life. He left APCH his sophomore year of high school, only to come back a semester later because he wanted support. We immediately enrolled Joseph into our LIFE Mentoring program where he could receive support above

and beyond what the staff could provide during program hours. Joseph began participating in our College Preparation program, exploring his educational options and attended night school so he could graduate from high school on time. Through P.R.E.P. Joseph received an internship and uncovered his love for working with children. He was ignited! Upon graduating from high school, Joseph enrolled in a local community college and after two years, is transferring into a four-year university this fall! Joseph is studying early childhood education and looks forward to working with young people, helping them get a great educational start. The intersection

of care, accountability, exposure and access has provided a foundation for Joseph, who is now thriving and on a path to be the first in his family to obtain a bachelors degree. Joseph and many
other teens and young adults at APCH are changing the narratives of their families and communities.
APCH Shaheen College Scholarship To date, the APCH Shaheen Scholarship program has sent more than 400 firstgeneration scholars to college! The David and Linda Shaheen Foundation is the lead funder for the program, which provides scholarship funds, college tours, application assistance, financial aid, counseling, parent orientation, and year round support to ensure our members are successful once they get to college.
Social Enterprise & Entrepreneurship (S.E.E) The Social Enterprise and Entrepreneurship (S.E.E.) program is a 2-way fold. On one hand, S.E.E. is committed to exposing our members to an entrepreneurial mindset. On the other hand, S.E.E. is simultaneously working to build out a revenue stream for A Place Called Home through products and services that best reflect the core values of several of our different departments. A popular product is our Seed Paper Cards, made from a special paper that has seeds embedded in it. With the inspiration our members get from their Art classes, they design beautiful front covers for all our cards. With the help of our Urban Agriculture department, we even plant the leftover paper scraps in our gardens so we can see the wild flowers grow! The S.E.E program is dedicated to enhancing skill sets our members already possess. Through these cards, our members have the opportunity to express their culture, and the cards have a positive environmental impact by recycling and reducing waste, and producing beauty.

Counseling Isabella’s Story In the fall of 2019, APCH launched IMPACT, a Saturday program geared towards offering wraparound,positive youth development services to the Opportunity Youth population in South Central Los Angeles, and its surrounding communities. IMPACT sets its members up for success by providing Job Readiness, Arts and Culture, Athletics and Counseling services all through an individualized approach that caters to the specific needs of its members. Isabella (16), has been a core member of the IMPACT program since day one. Isabella first found out about APCH through an IMPACT recruitment presentation at Central High School, her home campus. She was drawn to the opportunities that IMPACT provided for personal growth and support. Isabella specifically wanted to focus on learning how to socialize with her peers because she recognized that it was an area of difficulty for her in the past. Isabella quickly saw value in access to the APCH counselors, whether it was to talk things through in challenging moments or to obtain therapy services. Isabella found that by talking about what she was feeling and experiencing, she was able to better understand her needs, wants, and how to communicate in an effective way that others could understand.

Another area where there was a great IMPACT in her life was through her participation in Boxing. This fun IMPACT class allowed Isabella to relieve stress and cope with the challenges she faced in daily life. Growing up, Isabella found herself getting into fights everywhere she went, feeling like she had to defend herself. She was angry all the time and scared. Participating in Boxing these past two semesters, she not only learned about discipline, but also how to channel her emotions through this sport. This positive outlet has kept her safe and out of trouble. Isabella has even considered Boxing as a career, either as a competitor or a trainer. During this COVID-19 Pandemic, Isabella has continued to thrive by being a member of IMPACT remotely. She has utilized the online APCH IMPACT classes, continuing to check in with Counseling Staff and maintaining her friendships. As we reflected on her experience in the IMPACT program, she recognized that her socialization skills had improved and will benefit her in the future, as she begins networking professionally to find her clientele as a cosmetologist or as she navigates professional sports as a boxer. She is excited to continue to be a part of the program and can’t wait to get back on campus!

Volunteer & Mentor Awards In January 2020, we held our annual Volunteer & L.I.F.E. Mentoring Recognition Luncheon to acknowledge the hard work of the individuals and groups that volunteer with us and participate in our mentorship program. We are truly lucky to have a community of such compassionate, generous people who are dedicated to making a difference in the lives of our youth and our community.

New Year, New Leadership A Place Called Home Welcomes New Deputy Executive Director, Jasmine Taylor This year APCH welcomed a new Deputy Executive Director, Jasmine Taylor, who has been an advocate for youth development and education since her early teens. Her distinguished career began at age 15 when she was recognized for her leadership efforts in bringing redevelopment to her hometown of Compton, California. Then at age 16, following the devastation caused by the Los Angeles uprisings, she managed her first nonprofit as the President of the Rebuild LA Youth Task Force. Jasmine went on to earn her BA in Public Policy Management and Planning, specializing in educational policy and non-profit management, and her MA in Counseling from Dallas Baptist University. With a vast array of valuable experiences and a vision for inner-city youth education, Jasmine co-founded the South Los Angeles Community Harvest Foundation (CHF), which establishes charter schools in inner-city communities. Prior to accepting her new leadership position with APCH, Jasmine served as Assistant Executive Director of the Sunrise Children’s Foundation in Las Vegas, an organization focused on providing nutrition and early childhood education for the families in need in Southern Nevada. Jasmine has already made a tremendous impact on agency operations, infrastructure, and culture. We are so thankful to have her expertise and leadership as we navigate this challenging time. “This community poured into me, invested in me, and now I can return and do the same for the next generation of young leaders.” - JT

A Place Called Home Welcomes New Board Member, Susan Wolf Susan Wolf was one of the founders of Fast Forward Design and Line 6, an innovative, technology driven guitar and musical instrument product company. Susan and the founders sold Line 6 to Yamaha Corporation Japan in 2014, and Susan remained as SVP of Corporate Development and Administration until December of 2019. As of January 2020, Susan is the President and Co-Founder of WRiiG, an innovative and collaborative business technology consulting group that assists a variety of companies in the musical instrument space. Susan is passionate about serving on multiple boards, including APCH, which focus on providing support, care, education and services to the community.

Volunteerism Post-Covid Response
In a year that has ushered in new hardships and incredible burdens for entire communities, APCH volunteers have been purveyors of optimism and examples of the positive impact born of people uniting to support neighbors in need. At the onset of the COVID crisis, we launched our Family Resource Depot (FRD) to deliver groceries and household essentials to our families, and thanks to our committed APCH volunteers, we’ve continued to provide bags of fresh produce, canned goods, paper products, and more to hundreds of families in South Central each week! We are truly grateful and inspired by this diverse group of individuals— families and friends, colleagues and neighbors—who’ve come together to make the APCH FRD possible.

In Memoriam Pam Rector In February of 2020, Los Angeles unexpectedly lost a champion for positive action and service. Pam Rector was perhaps best known as a beloved leader in the Loyola Marymount University community and the director of LMU’s Center for Service and Action. At A Place Called Home, we knew her as a friend, supporter, volunteer, and mother to Grace Rector - an exemplary Marymount High School student volunteer who invested years of service in APCH. We were stunned by Pam’s passing and humbled to find that she solidified her commitment to our mission by leaving behind a final investment from her estate. We extend our deepest gratitude to longtime friends of A Place Called Home who have entrusted us with carrying on their legacies through our work. Though we are no longer able to celebrate the triumphs of our young people with them, their generosity sustains our mission and remains engrained in the spirit of our community.

Family Resource Depot After the onset of the COVID crisis, APCH quickly pivoted all of our programming online and created our Family Resource Depot, through which we safely deliver bags of groceries and other household essentials weekly to families in need in South Central L.A. More than 300 APCH member families and hundreds of others served by partner organizations are reliant on this lifeline as job loss and illness continues to disproportionately impact our community. It is only through the generosity of sponsors and volunteer support that we have been able to meet this moment! We are forever grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who continue to take weekly shifts, and to our sponsors who have made it all possible, especially our friends at LA Regional Food Bank, LA Galaxy, DBS Bank, Oasis LA, Food Forward, Hollywood Orchards, and US Bank.
