Director’s Note: So many times, as creatives, we say, "We want to see our stories, told by our people for our people." With Mariposa, I say with great pride that we are manifesting that dream. My heart shines with gratitude as I see my beautiful, intuitive, and talented cast bring Chris Banda’s words to life. Mariposa is a semi-autobiographical piece; being so personal has made it so universal. It has touched every single one of us working on it, to the core. Thank you, my dear Chris Banda, for your unique and authentic voice. Thank you, Justin, for bringing me on board and trusting me to be the person to bring this magical yet very real and relevant piece to life. I am honored to be the director of Mariposa and blessed for the opportunity to work with artists I love and admire. Thank you, A Place Called Home and Company of Angels, for this space and opportunity to share our stories and touch souls. To our audience, thank you, and enjoy the show. Que viva el teatro, blessings, Jacqueline Guido

Directors Note:
In La Egoista, I find myself deeply drawn to the central question that permeates the play: Who is the true "La Egoista"? Is it Josefina, the devoted sister who sacrifices her dreams, aspirations, and even her identity to care for her ailing sibling, Betsaida? Or is it Betsaida herself, who, knowingly or unknowingly, accepts this sacrifice? As I explore this question, I am struck by the complexity of their relationship and the profound emotional resonance it carries.
However, what truly stands out in La Egoista is the metaphorical presence of the health care system. The health care system, in its unyielding stance, becomes the ultimate "La Egoista," refusing to sacrifice anything for the greater good. It serves as a stark reminder of how many of us are hindered in our pursuit of true care, whether it be for ourselves or our loved ones, by a system that often prioritizes profit over well-being.
As a director, it is my intention to bring these themes to life on the stage, allowing the audience to connect with the characters and their struggles. La Egoista is not just a play; it is a mirror that reflects the complexities of human relationships, societal pressures, and the sacrifices we all must grapple with in our quest for care and compassion.

It’s fun to have cousins. Most of the time When I started working on this play, I thought about my own family and I realized there is nothing in the world quite like that bond I have with my own cousins. Loving, Volatile, Funny, Forgiving, Present and Always There for Each Other. We’ve gotten into some weird predicaments that can’t really be explained to outsiders (nor should they be -- ever!). Generally you will outlive your parents. And your children will generally outlive you. But your primos walk with you through this life - beginning, middle and end. We hope you find something funny in this play that makes you want to send your favorite cousins a text that simply says “Quit It OUT!”
This play takes place over 40 years, 1985 - 2015

When I tell you I'm Mexican, I'm pointing to the country that wanted me dead first. When I tell you I feel American, I'm telling you how often I think about how I'll die here. Sometimes, when we cite our geographies, we're telling you what we survived and what is going to kill us. Nationalisms are lies and, more often than not, only help to reveal the specific harms that are inflicted upon us and people across the globe in the name of maintaining the violent project that is nation.A nation is blood constantly drying atop a wound. You trade one cut for another. You always pay in skin. A nation is a thing that kills you, slow and fast. Makes you wait to die. Makes you pay to die. My country is the people I love. My country is the people who labor and struggle and burn. My country is my people always, always from everywhere. And even then, "country" is too dangerous a word for all the ways that love and struggle should be. May all borders vanish one day. May all countries end one day. May we all be allowed to be with each other in all the ways divinity has already ordained. May we all be free one day. We only got us.
It is everything we need.

Director’s Note
First and foremost, welcome to A Place Called Home. My name is Edwin Lobato and I welcome you to a project I’ve been working on since Spring 2023. It’s called Los Vendidos. This play is intensely special to me because I was given an opportunity to direct it by one of the best, Mr. Efrain. Los Vendidos is a type of play where it examines stereotypes of Latinos in California, and how they are treated by locals. My actors have done a terrific job playing these characters and I do hope you enjoy the show. Edwin OUT!!
Theater Program Manager Note:
This production was directed by high school senior Edwin Lobato last spring, when he was in his final semester of high school. Edwin is a promising young man with a bright future in the arts, and he worked seamlessly with the actors and the APCH staff to make this production happen. I watched his peers look up to him as a leader, and I saw the staff respect him as a talented artist. We couldn’t be more proud of Edwin as he enters his first year of college as a Directing student.

Take some dry ramen and throw it in a plastic bag. Add Hot Cheetos, beef jerky bits, beans, Hot Fries, and hot water. Mayonnaise or mustard (if you like that shit). Let it sit. Enjoy. Anything can be lunch in 9th grade. Anything can be anything. Jeffrey, Andrew, Chris, and Jordan are 9th grade boys and they’re trying their absolute best, and the thing about 9th grade is nobody knows what they’re doing. Here they are, at lunch. Here they are, at home. Here they are, together, in 9th grade, hoping they’ll get through it.

In 2018, the Trump administration’s zero-tolerance immigration policy separated over 5,000 children from their parents, who were only coming to America for a better life. Much like my relatives did. I noticed when some families were reunited, our government had taken away their clothing and issued them gray pants and hoodies. I felt helpless. Then one morning I woke up and saw a CNN report about a Jewish woman in Los Angeles who hid a Latina mom and her two daughters after the mom’s husband was suddenly deported by ICE. The Jewish woman was introduced to this family by a local priest. I wondered: “what did they all do at night when they were in hiding?” “Did the jewish woman tell them about the story of Anne Frank?” “Did this woman worry how risky creating a safe house was?”
Luckily, I got to talk to her and she explained… “What began as an attempt to live out my Jewish values and push back against an inhumane immigrant policy turned into a blessing: a chance to feel the warmth of that proverbial single candle in the darkness."
