Flood Recovery Continues

By William Berning Devastated communities all along the Front Range continue their recovery efforts from the massive and catastrophic flooding in North Central Colorado that occurred last month.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has listed 11 counties as eligible for individual and household assistance and 18 counties as eligible for public assistance. Those eligible for individual and household assistance include: Adams County, Arapahoe County, Boulder County, Clear Creek County, El Paso County, Fremont County, Jefferson County, Larimer County, Logan County, Morgan County, and Weld County. Those eligible for public assistance include: Adams County, Arapahoe County, Boulder County, Clear Creek County, Crowley County, Denver County, El Paso County, Fremont County, Gilpin County, Jefferson County, Lake County, Larimer County, Lincoln County, Logan County, Morgan County, Sedgwick County, Washington County, and Weld County.

FEMA has also designated all Colorado counties, not just those listed above, as eligible to apply for assistance under the Hazard Mitiga tion Grant Program. sures after a major disaster declaration. The purpose of the HMGP is to reduce the loss of life and property due to natural disasters and to enable mitigation measures to be implemented during the immediate recovery from a disaster.

The ROC government has actively sought international support to expand its international space, and has initiated pragmatic and constructive dialogue with mainland China, achieving significant results. In 2009, member countries of the United Nations for the first time invited the ROC government to formally participate in the World Health Assembly (WHA) as an observer, and we have continued to attend every year since. Furthermore, in September 2013 Taiwan was invited to attend the 38th Session of the Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization as a guest of the President of the Council. Our participation in these two bodies is of great symbolic meaning and has given us considerable encouragement. We hope that the international community will take into account these precedents and allow Taiwan to substantively participate in the UNFCCC. This will enable us to receive support from and contribute to the international community.

APBJ Exclusive: Sabatino Chen Playing His Way To Taiwan

By Fion Wan As a new basketball season approaches, Sabatino Chen will be heading to Taiwan to play for the Yulon Dinos. With an impressive college basketball career at the University of Colorado/Boulder behind him, Chen seeks new opportunities and adventures in the professional realm.

“This season my main focus is to win the SBL championship and also establish myself as one of the best players in the league.” The SBL championship, also known as the Super Basketball League, is the top-tier men’s professional basketball league in the country of Taiwan. Chen hopes to improve his outside shooting throughout this season as his team prepares for the championship.

Not only does Chen leave behind an impressive legacy in the community and at his alma mater, he has become an inspiration for youngsters aspiring to become basketball players. Being of Asian descent, many young athletes are beginning to look towards him and other players, like Jeremy Lin, as role models. Chen says that he finds Michael Jordan the most inspirational athlete, “because of how he has influenced so many people and myself who love the game of basketball.” With this knowledge, he believes that he can help impact young Asian-Americans because he can be a player that they can relate to inside and outside of basketball.

“Basketball has really been my main focus throughout most of my life. As a person, it has taught me how to deal with adversity and has also taught me how to discipline myself with hard work and dedication in order to reach my goals.”
