By William Berning On May 10, Journal Publisher Wendy Chao received her 2013 Ellis Island Medal of Honor at a red-carpet ceremony in New York City. Frank and Wendy Chao traveled together to the banquet and were met there by daughter Jocelyn Chao, who is President of the Asian Pacific Business Journal. There were over 1500 people in attendance at the ceremony, and the subsequent dinner had nearly 800 people there. Wendy joined seven other Chinese Americans who were recipients of this year’s awards.

[Editor’s Note: The original number of Chinese American recipients was represented to the Journal as six, however, there were actually eight in attendance at the event.] Three biographies were presented previously in the April Edition of the Journal, and three are being presented today in this one. [Editor’s Note: We were unable to obtain the biographies of the final two recipients due to technical problems occurring at press time]. Wendy expresses deep thanks to the readers and supporters of the Asian Pacific Business Journal for the part they have played in her successes, including receiving this highly acclaimed Delicious Japanese food award.

2013 Ellis Island Medal of Honor Recipients James Lu

Chinese American 2013 Ellis Island Medal of Honor Recipients James Lu is from Fujian Changle, China. He immigrated to America in 1980 with his parents and two brothers. When he got to America, he lived in Maryland. He was only seventeen years old when he attended Great Mills High School, and after one year he moved to New York City to seek employment.

When he got to New York City, he attended Seward Park High School during the day and right after school he worked in a Chinese restaurant as a dishwasher. He graduated from Seward Park High School in two years and borrowed money from relatives to open a Chinese fast food restaurant. After saving money for three years, he attended Professional Business College (PBC) and studied business management, accounting, and computer programming.

After PBC, he opened Food Hing Trading Corporation in 1993, a business that distributes restaurant supplies. When he started Food Hing, he only had one truck and two employees along with his wife. Starting his own business was tough and did not make a profit for many years. But, he worked very hard seven days a week for ten years. After ten years, his business flourished. Currently, he works five days a week from 5:30am to 3:00pm. He has fifty employees in Food Hing Trading Corporation and fifteen trucks to deliver to 500 restaurants in New York. He is very happy to have the opportunity to open up his own business. Recently, he has had the opportunity to invest in condos and hotel projects in Queens. He had faith in himself that these investments would be successful.

Mr. Lu has been blessed with success and has devoted his time to helping others in his community. Currently, he holds the position of Chairman in the American Fujianese Association of Commerce and Industry and the Executive Vice Chairman for the Fukien Benevolent Association of America Inc. Serving in these organizations helps Fujianese people who are facing economic challenges and discrimination in America. They have also collected donations for earthquake relief efforts in Sichuan, China and Haiti. In addition, his organizations have volunteered and donated money to the relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Mr. Lu has devoted his life to achieving the American Dream. His children learned from an early age to do well in school from seeing how their parents worked very hard to give them the opportunities they did not have growing up. His daughter currently attends Columbia University for graduate school. He wants to be an example of how working hard your whole life and taking risks in starting one’s own business can pay off in the end.

Jerry L. Chong Chinese American 2013 Ellis Island Medal of Honor Recipients Jerry L. Chong is a decorated Marine combat veteran of the Vietnam War, with 30 years of legal experience in corporate defense; civil, commercial and tort litigation; complex and highly litigated trials; personal injury and products liability; criminal defense; and government and community consultation. He handles a great range of cases – from vehicle accident to slip and falls to major tort litigation.

His corporate clients include Atlantic Richfield Company, BP West Coast Products LLC and Pacific Gas & Electricity.

He was admitted to the California State Bar in 1976 and is also admitted to practice in U.S. District Court, Eastern District in California and the United States Supreme Court. Mr. Chong received his B.A. from California State University, Sacramento in 1972 and a J.D. in 1975 from the University of California, Davis. He is AV rated, the highest rating for attorney competence and ethics by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, a national compilation of attorneys.

A trailblazer and community leader for over two decades, Mr. Chong has been a founding member of numerous legal, service, community, and advocacy organizations, including the local and national Asian bar associations and the Council of Asian Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership (CAPITAL), which represents over 95 individual Asian Pacific Islander organizations in Sacramento. He is currently the Chief Legal Counsel of CAPITAL Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to strengthening the Asian Pacific Islander community through advocacy, education, and collaboration.

Mr. Chong has been involved in the judicial appointment process since the 1980’s, working with Governor Deukmeijian, Wilson, and Davis administration. He was one of the founding members of the Unity Bar, which brought together the Asian, Latino, and African American Bar Associations in Sacramento to work together to establish relationships with the Governor’s office and influence public policy. Mr. Chong has worked closely with government agencies, elected officials, and private businesses to outreach and advocate for the Asian Pacific Islander, Muslim, and gay and lesbian communities. As legal counsel to 13 community-based organizations, he frequently speaks to the media as the Asian community representative. He has been an instructor at Stanford Law School on trial advocacy, California Continuing Education, and the CAPITAL Case Defense Seminar.

He has received numerous awards for his professional work and community leadership. Most recently, he received the 2007 Unsung Heroe Award from the Harry Truman Club; 2006 Distinguished Founders Award from the Unity Bar; KVIE public television 2005 Local Heroes Award for his public advocacy, service and commitment and Visions in America Award from Comcast and International Channels for successes and contributions of immigrant community leaders in twelve cities across the United States. He also received PG&E Gold Supplier Diversity Award for outstanding service and representation; Trailblazer Award from National Asian Pacific American Bar Association for outstanding achievement and leadership; and Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Sacramento County Bar Association.

Wyan Hua Wang Chinese American 2013 Ellis Island Medal of Honor Recipients Wyan Wang is from Taishan, China. He graduated from South China Normal University, in which he won the first prize of the National College Student Essay Competition.

In 1988, Mr. Wang resigned from his previous job and started to work in the cosmetology appliance industry

based in the Pearl River Delta area. He built a network integrating manufacturing, wholesale and marketing and within several years he became one of the biggest dealers of cosmetology appliances in China.

On American Independence Day of 1996, Wyan Wang stepped onto the land of the United States along with the attachment of his own country and his parents after the first downturn in his lifetime. He started with nothing in the United States. Just arriving in New York, Mr. Wang wanted to find a job to live on. However, the reality depressed him. A couple of months later, he made a decision to build his own cosmetology appliance business again.

In order to find out the status of the United States cosmetology appliance market, he visited hundreds of beauty salons and found there was a huge potential business space in it. Therefore, he determined to create his own brand to sell series cosmetology products. In December of 1996, Beauty Beauty USA Inc. was established in New York.

While selling cosmetology appliances, he also won the attorneyship of famous brand ELENE and KLAPP. To enrich his profession, Mr. Wang visited the biochemistry laboratories in Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy many times to learn the technology of anti-aging; he also visited cosmetology appliance factories to learn how to manipulate the appliances during 2003 to 2005.

He brought the products and techniques back to the United States to promote and apply.

FARAH is the brand created by Wyan Wang after being an attorney for 10 years. He expects FARAH will be developed as a prestigious international skin care product brand. The debut of FARAH marks the milestone of Beauty Beauty USA Inc., and indicates the leap from attorney to brand owner.

Mr. Wang is involved actively with social charity. From 2000 to 2012, he has been sponsoring and holding many kinds of pageant activities, which help younger females get involved in mainstream society. Also, he accompanied Miss China from New York to China to do cultural exchange activities and was elected to be the vice president of the NY Chinese Beauty Pageant Board.

In the August, 2010, he established the Taishan Cup Group Table Tennis Tournament (a non-profit) and was elected as the vice president of the association. After that, he held three table tennis tournaments for the purpose of strengthening people’s health and popularizing table tennis.

In the June, 2010, he established the Taishanese in America Magazine (a non-profit) as president. The magazine has been published four times, and mainly reflects the life of Taishanese in the U.S. These writings have become popular in the culture. He has also striven to write a signature article and did the interview himself. He is both a successful entrepreneur and a popular writer.

In 2009, he established the Beauty Beauty International School as president of the board. Since establishing the school, he has committed to doing the educational business and actively helping the associates of the beauty industry and the new immigrants.

In 2008, he established the non-profit association Asian America Beauty Association as president.

Changhua County Turns Pig Waste Into Green Gold • •

Pig slurry has traditionally been a major environmental concern for locals, but the problem can be solved by recycling the waste into clean water, organic fertilizer and biogas for power generation, Changhua County Government said June 25.

Henk van Shaik, chairman of the U.N.-affiliated Co-operative Program on Water and Climate, who came to examine progress on the project, praised the cause prompting the local government to implement the plan. “Changhua will become even more beautiful,” he said.

Located next to the Dongluo River, the processing plant

separates the pig slurry into solid, liquid and gaseous components. After treatment, the solid waste becomes organic fertilizer for use on farms, the biogas is stored for electricity generation to power the plant and nearby public facilities, and the liquid is filtered and purified to produce water pure enough for use in irrigation or cleaning. “Pig slurry can be turned into green gold,” Changhua County Magistrate Cho Po-yuan said at the launch of the Dongluo treatment plant. “This is the first facility fully funded by a local government to help pig farmers reduce costs and save efforts in handling the waste.”

Changhua has the country’s third highest number of hogs, and around 90 percent of pig raisers are small or medium operations of below 5,000 hogs. Without sufficient funds to build their own treatment facilities, they used to discharge the waste directly into the Dongluo River, creating a serious environmental problem plaguing the locals.

To find the solutions, Cho led a fact-finding mission to Europe in 2011, and subsequently cooperated with Taipeibased National Taiwan University and the Taiwan International Institute for Water Education in creating a treatment facility to turn the waste into useful resources.

Taitung Station Gains AAALAC Accreditation • Publication Date:06/25/2013 • Source: Taiwan Today Taitung Animal Propagation Station’s certification by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International confirms Taiwan is meeting global standards in the humane treatment of animals in science, according to the ROC Council of Agriculture.

“This recognition boosts the credibility and competitiveness of Taiwan’s medical research institutions worldwide,” said Chu Hsien-pin, director of the station under the COA Livestock Research Institute, June 25 in an interview with Taiwan Today. “It also shows we are going the extra mile when it comes to achieving excellence in animal care and use.”

According to the COA, certification of the station is the strongest sign to date that efforts to breed and rear Lanyu miniature pigs at the facility are playing an important role in strengthening the development of local biomed and vaccine production industries.

The Virtual End Of Freedom

By William Berning Two large pieces of news ought to be of deep and abiding concern to any and every American who cherishes individual freedom. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has admitted to targeted mistreatment of groups applying for special tax status on the basis of their politics. The National Security Agency (NSA) has been exposed as monitoring virtually everything it can through appropriation of cyberspace data and phone company data. In both cases, computer programs are being used to sift countless transactions in order to identify what is considered either suspicious or disagreeable. While the NSA is considered one of America’s more mysterious organs, no one dis-

agrees that the IRS is one of the most well-known and one of the most powerful of Federal entities.

These revelations bring into startling focus the degree to which our lives are being watched and shadowed by the Federal Government; mostly without our knowledge or consent. We are not far from a government of the controlled by the controller, for the controller.

As long as we Americans allow our pursuits of pleasure and prosperity to keep our eyes off the target, we are at risk of losing our most precious and cherished freedoms as surely as the Germans lost their identities to Hitler and Nazism in the last century. It is most alarming to listen to refugee-immigrants who have fled from despotic for-

Dear Readers, Well, after a four month break in the drought from February to April, it has unfortunately returned in full force to Colorado since mid-May. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the over 500 who lost homes in the Black Forest Fire, plus the others who have lost property to the many wildfires burning in this state. It brings to mind with terrible clarity that what we have can be lost in an instant, without warning, and to remember that in light of the days we have been given on this earth.
