From the President
Dear Members of the Apawamis Community,

We hope this message finds you well. It is with sincere appreciation and pride that we present the 2025 Annual Report of the Apawamis Foundation. Now in our 25th year, the Foundation remains committed to supporting the educational aspirations of our employees and their families. At the end of this academic year, we will celebrate our 25th Anniversary with the Apawamis Community and our Scholars.
During the 2024 academic year, a record twenty-four scholars received grants to help fund their college journeys. On behalf of each of them and their families, thank you for your continued generosity.
The Apawamis Foundation was created with a simple yet powerful mission: to open doors through education. That mission is as vital today as it was when we began. Every dollar you contribute has a direct and lasting impact, giving our scholars the opportunity to grow, learn, and pursue meaningful futures. With your support, 2024 Scholars were able to attend the following colleges and universities:
Academy of Aviation
Beacon College
Boston University
Catholic University of America
Franklin and Marshal College
Hamilton College
Hobart and William Smith College
Iona College
Johnson and Wales
Muhlenberg College
Pace University
Penn State University
Southern Methodist University
SUNY - Geneseo
Thomas College
University of Connecticut
University of Phoenix
Westchester Community College
This year’s recipients are enrolled at a wide range of colleges and universities across the country, studying fields that will prepare them to become the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and professionals. Their ambition and resilience inspire us to keep moving forward.
As the cost of higher education continues to rise, the need for support grows. Your contributions make it possible for our employees’ children to take their next steps with confidence and security. Whether you are a long-time donor or considering giving for the first time, we ask that you consider renewing or increasing your support at one of our giving levels: Birdie, Eagle, Double Eagle, or Masters.
Together, we can continue building a legacy of opportunity. Your generosity fuels dreams and makes a tangible difference in the lives of those who serve our community every day.
Gratefully,

The Apawamis Foundation History

The Apawamis Foundation was founded in 2000. The Foundation is exempt from federal tax under section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code, as an organization described in section 501(c)(3) of the code and, as such, contributions to the Foundation are tax deductible.
In 1999, the Board of Governors of The Apawamis Club approved the formation of this tax exempt foundation to carry on the tradition of supporting the WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund and, more importantly, to expand the charitable activities to include Apawamis employees, caddies, and their children. By its charter, the Foundation can, from time to time, support other tax-exempt organizations in their efforts as well. The Foundation is independent of the Board of Governors of the Club and is run by its own Board of Directors.
The purpose of the Foundation, as noted in its certificate of incorporation, is: “To provide for the encouragement of education and educational excellence through grants, scholarships and financial assistance to students, institutions and other organizations; to aid, encourage, stimulate, foster and promote artistic and cultural activities through grants, bequests, gifts or otherwise to individuals, groups, institutions, and organizations….” Since its inception, virtually all Foundation grants have been made in the form of scholarships. Our application to the IRS for tax-exempt status notes the following:
“Criteria used in selecting scholarship recipients:
• Club caddies, employees, their children, and other needy persons and other charitable organizations, such as the WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund.
• Evidence of financial need, as demonstrated by the Student Aid Report prepared by the College Scholastic Service (or other similar service).
• Acceptance by an institution of higher learning.
• Demonstrated qualities of integrity, good character and leadership, from participation in extra-curricular, religious, civic, or volunteer programs.
• In the case of Club caddies or employees (and, by extension, their families), at least one year of successful work experience.
• Verification of successful employment, by the Head Golf Professional, in the case of caddies, and by the Club Manager, in the case of employees.
• Completion of the comprehensive application, detailing scholastic achievements, extra-curricular activities and accomplishments, and demonstration of financial need.”
Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded direct scholarships to numerous sons and daughters of employees, employees themselves, and caddies. It has also provided the WGA Caddie Scholarship Fund with generous annual donations consistent with our fellow clubs in Westchester County. The importance of this financial support to our caddies and employees cannot be overstated. In many cases, the recipients of our awards are the first in their families to attend college and, for some, our financial assistance has made the difference. All of our recipients, past and present, have registered their appreciation for the generosity of our members and the unique opportunity the Foundation has afforded them.
It is our hope that the Apawamis Foundation will continue to thrive and carry out its mandate of giving for many years to come.
Apawamis and the MGA Caddie Scholarship Fund

The Apawamis Foundation makes a contribution each year to the MGA Caddie Scholarship Fund (formerly the Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund). The Fund was created in 1956 by famous Met Section golfer Willie Turnesa and his friend, Udo Reinach, a member of Quaker Ridge. They were helped by Tom Burke, a former Apawamis member, who organized the financial end of the fund. In its first year, the fund received twenty-five scholarship applications from area caddies, fifteen of which met the standards required to qualify. Unfortunately, the fund had only enough in its coffers to offer eight awards, so the names of the fifteen qualified caddies were placed into a hat, with eight very lucky recipients being selected by a blind draw. Subsequently, the names of the eight “winners,” as well as the seven less fortunate, were published in a local newspaper article and caught the attention of a concerned and generous Apawamis member, Sally Francis.
Sally, twice Apawamis Women’s Club Champion and one of the Met area’s better woman golfers, read the article and was excited about this new scholarship fund and the eight young men who would benefit. However, she was concerned about the seven whose names were left in the hat. She immediately called her good friend, Willie Turnesa, and asked how much would be needed to provide funding for all fifteen. He told her it would take an additional $12,000, to which she responded with a check for the full amount. Thanks to her generosity, all fifteen qualified candidates received scholarships and the Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund was off and running. To this date, thanks to its generous contributors, the fund has had the resources to award scholarships to each and every qualified candidate. We are pleased to note that over the years, sixty-three Apawamis caddies have benefited directly.
Sally Francis continued to contribute generously to the fund until she passed away in the early 1980s. Apawamis members also have actively supported the fund over the years and Apawamis ranks very competitively among all contributing clubs in the Westchester area.
