"PATTANI"
Pattani is an east coast province in the South, adjacent to the Gulf of Thailand, with an area of approximately 1,940.356 square kilometres. There are two major rivers: Tani and Sai Buri. A civilised town in the past, Pattani was the capital state of the Langkasuka Empire, an independent state of Thai Buddhists in the 2nd century, which covered the area of the provinces of Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat in Thailand, as well as, the states of Kelantan and Terengganu of Malaysia. Today, Pattani still maintains

some ruins of the ancient town in Amphoe Yarang. Due to its mountainous area and long seashore of about 170 kilometres, Pattani has been an important port and centre of administration, trading, and culture. There are several tourism resources of nature, historical ancient places, and traditional culture. Pattani is administratively divided into 12 districts: Mueang Pattani, Yarang, Nong Chik Khok Pho, Yaring, Panare, Mayo, Sai Buri, Kapho, Mai Kaen, Thung Yang Daeng, and Mae Lan.

This historically flourishing port town was a melting pot of diverse cultures handed down by passers-by of diverse races, including the Indian, Arabian, Persian and Chinese. Brahmins and Mahayana Buddhism imparted onto this land strong Indian influence, until the time when Pattani became the center of Islamic culture in this lower southern region of Thailand.
About 80 percent of the present-day Pattani people are descendants of the Muslim from the Malay Peninsula. The close connection with their relatives across the border is reflected in their dialect, which resembles the one spoken in Kelantan state of Malaysia, and in their writing called Yawi, which was developed from Arabic alphabets. Other notable cultural heritages are Chuan Tani weaving style, kris or Malay daggers with scalloped edges, pigeon raising, brassware and local performances.
Muslim Thai from Arab and India Chinese Thai
The dispatch of China's Ming Dynasty (contemporary of King Naresuan the Great of the Ayutthaya Kingdom), provides the first record of the migration of the Chinese to Pattani. According to the dispatch, a Hokkian named Lim To Khiam came to reside in Pattani, and later founded canons for Raya Biru, the Governess of Pattani. He was thus promoted to be a tax collector in Pattani Bay.
Their ancestors were the Arabian and Persian traders who settled down in Pattani in about 1457. At present this group is scattered in various districts, their center being the Kabo Mosque in Amphoe Muang.
