Planning, Preservation and Revitalization of Gullah Geechee Communities By Ennis Davis, AICP
My impact as a planner was forever altered during a 2017 Florida Trust for Historic Preservation board retreat. At the time, Miami-Dade County’s Adrienne Burke, AICP, Esq., had just purchased a book on tourism and segregation at Silver Springs called “Remembering Paradise Park” by Lu Vickers and Cynthia Wilson-Graham. Noticing the cover, I asked to take a quick look and realized a prominently featured name in the book was one I knew very well … my mother’s maiden name. After receiving confirmation that a cousin was the longtime operator of the park, a personal journey was launched to uncover my Gullah Geechee heritage, forever altering my continued on page 4
