Nominateanoutstandinghistoricpreservationist,organization, community,programorpreservationachievementthathasmade asignificantimpactinpreservingFlorida’shistoryandheritage!

Awardswillbepresentedduringthe Preservation on Main Street Conference in Tallahassee, July 10-13, 2024.

GUIDELINES

There is no fee. TheFloridaTruststrivestoreducebarriers inhistoricpreservation.Thisyear,nominationsare completelyfreeofcharge.

Deadline: Pleasesubmitallnominationsandsupporting material by April 1, 2024.

Theprogramisopentoanyindividual,organizationor businessinvolvedinhistoricpreservationinFlorida. Individualsmaybenominatedwithouttheirknowledge.

Self-nominationswillbeaccepted.

Ifyoudon'townthepropertyyouarenominating,the ownermustprovidealetterofconsent.

Allprojects,activitiesorindividualservicemusthavebeen completedbetweenJanuary1,2021,andDecember31, 2023,inthestateofFlorida.

Previousnominationsthatdidnotreceiveanawardmaybe revisedandresubmitted.Besuretoincludeallattachments witheachapplication.

Thereisnolimittothenumberofnominationssubmitted byanindividualororganization.

Eachaward-winningnominationwillreceiveanaward trophy.Additionaltrophiesmaybepurchasedforafee.

Sallye Jude Award for Resilient Preservation

NamedinmemoryofSallyeJude,achampionofhistoricpreservationinMiami,Florida, thisawardrecognizesthecreativeintegrationofresilientandsustainabledesignpractices inpreservationprojectsthatrespondtoenvironmentalthreats.

Projectsinthiscategorymayinclude:

restoration,rehabilitation,preservationoradaptiveuseprojects

resilientdesignsolutionsthatrespondtothreatsfromclimatechangeand environmentalhazards,suchasincreasedrisksoffloodingorsealevelrise useofextensivegreenpracticesormaterials

eco-friendlypracticesforcommunityplanning,suchasamendingpreservation regulationsordesignguidelinestoincluderesilientandsustainabledesignmeasures orcreatingsmartgrowthprograms

Materialsandconstructiontechniquesmustcomplywith:

Greenbuildingstandardstoalevelofachievingcertification(evenifcertification wasnotsought)and/orachievealevelofgreencertification(LEED,GreenGlobes, etc.)

Restoration, Rehabilitation or Adaptive Use

Thisawardrecognizesbestpracticesfortherestoration,rehabilitationoradaptiveuseof abuilding,complexofbuildingsoradistrict.Thiscategorymayincluderesidential, commercial,governmental,educationalandinstitutionalprojects,bothforindividual buildingsorhistoricdistricts.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

Projectsmustrelatetoabuildingordistrictthatisregisteredashistoricatthelocal, stateornationallevel.

Workmusthavebeencompletedwithinthelastthreeyears.

Projectsmustfullydemonstrateadherencetothe Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. AdaptiveuseprojectsinparticularmustfullyadheretoStandard#1:“Aproperty shallbeusedforitshistoricpurposeorbeplacedinanewusethatrequiresminimal changetothedefiningcharacteristicsofthebuildinganditssiteandenvironment.” Thelevelofcreativityoftheadaptiveusewillalsobeconsidered.

Archaeology

Thisawardrecognizesasignificantarchaeologicalproject,suchasaphysicalsite investigation,excavationandresultingreport,theinterpretationofasiteorthecreation ofeducationalopportunitiesandaccesstothearchaeologicalsite.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

Projectsshouldbecompletedinaccordancewithprofessionalandarchaeological ethicsasrecognizedbytheSocietyforHistoricalArchaeologyandthe ArchaeologicalInstituteofAmerica.

Historic Landscape

Thisawardrecognizestherestoration,preservationandinterpretationofasiteorthe creationofeducationalopportunitiesandaccesstothehistoriclandscape.

Thisawardrecognizesindividuals,organizationsorprojectsinFloridathathaveexcelled inplacemaking*andplacekeeping*,contributingtotheenhancementandrevitalization ofcommunitieswhilerespectingtheiruniqueculturalheritage.Examplesinclude:

Adaptive reuse projects: Repurposinghistoricbuildingsorstructuresfornewuses, suchasconvertingoldwarehousesintomixed-usedevelopmentswithretailspaces, officesandresidentialunits.

Heritage trails and interpretive signage: Creatingheritagetrailsorwalkingtours thathighlightsignificanthistoricsites,landmarksandotherculturalheritage resourceswithinacommunity.

Main Street programs: Establishingpreservation-basedretaildistrictsorMain Streetprogramsthatpromotelocalbusinessesandentrepreneurshipwhilepreserving thearchitecturalintegrityandhistoriccharacterofcommercialbuildings.

Historic preservation districts: establishingandmaintainingdesignatedhistoric preservationdistrictswithregulationsandguidelinestoprotectandpreservethe architecturalcharacterandculturalsignificanceofthearea.

Oral history projects: Conductingoralhistoryprojectstorecordandpreservethe personalstories,memoriesandexperiencesoflongtimeresidentsorcommunity elders.

Cultural heritage festivals: organizingandhostingannualfestivalsoreventsthat celebratetheculturalheritage,traditionsandhistoryofacommunity.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

Theprogramormediasubjectfocusesonhistoricplaces,individuals,significant eventsandtrendsorsignificantaspectsofhistoricpreservation.

Usescreativeandinnovativeapproachestocommunicatingthestory.

Organizational Excellence

Thisawardacknowledgesexcellenceinhistoricpreservationbyagroup,corporation, neighborhoodorotherorganization,suchas:

Successfulfundraisingforpreservationinitiativesorprojects.

Creatingactivitiesthatpromotehistoricpreservation.

Creatingandimplementingnewpreservationlegislation/policies.

Increasingthecommunity’sawarenessofpreservationthroughredevelopment, publications,eventsorliterature.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

Submissionsshoulddefinethescopeoftheprojectandtheorganization’slongtermroleinitsimplementationandsuccess.

Master Artisan

ThisawardrecognizesindividualsinFloridawhousetraditionaltechniquesormethods toachieveauthenticityintherestorationofhistoricalresources.Previousawardwinners haveincludedartisanswithasignificantbodyofworkintheirspecializations,suchas intricatewoodworking,wroughtironwork,historicpointingofmortarforbrickwork orhand-carvingofarchitecturalelements.

CRITERIA

Theartisan’sexpertiseshouldbeconsideredartisticandrareintoday’sgeneral constructionpracticesandvitaltobestpracticesinhistoricpreservation.

Pleaseincludesomeofthehistoricpropertiesthattheartisanhasworkedoninyour submission.

Individual Distinguished Service

ThisawardhonorsacareerdedicatedtopreservingFlorida’shistoryandheritageandis intendedforindividualswhohaveclearlymadeanimpactintheircommunitythrough theireffortsasapreservationactivist,advocateorleader.

CRITERIA

Theindividualswillberecognizedfortheirworkinhistoricpreservationover aperiodoftime,orbytheircommunityasaleaderonasignificantprojectthat furtherstheunderstandingofandappreciationforhistoricpreservation.

Roy E. Graham Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation Education

NamedinmemoryofRoyEugeneGraham,FAIA,historicpreservationarchitect, educator,Beinecke-ReevesDistinguishedProfessorandDirectoroftheHistoric PreservationProgramattheUniversityofFloridaCollegeofDesign,Constructionand Planning,thisawardrecognizesprofessionaleducatorswhohavemadealong-term contributiontothefieldofhistoricpreservationeducation,ensuringfuturegenerations willcontinuetopreserveFlorida’sextraordinaryhistoryandheritage.

CRITERIA

Alleducationallevelswelcome;theawardisnotlimitedtoinstitutionalacademic settings.

Recipientmusthavedemonstratedleadershipindevelopingcurriculaandteaching historicpreservationprincipleswithinaformalprogram.

Historic Preservation Scholar Award

ThisawardrecognizescollegestudentsinFloridawhohavedemonstratedoutstanding dedicationandachievementinthefieldofhistoricpreservation.

CRITERIA

Thenominatedstudentmustbepursuingormusthavecompletedundergraduateor graduateeducationinthelastthreeyears(2021-2023)

Studentsmustbenominatedbyanacademicsupervisor.

Evidenceofoutstandingacademicperformanceandcommitmenttothestudyof historicpreservationthroughcoursework,researchorrelatedacademicactivities.

Significantcontributionstotheadvancementofknowledgeinthefieldofhistoric preservationthroughoriginalresearch,thesisprojectsorscholarlypublications.

Activeinvolvementandengagementwiththewiderhistoricpreservation community,includingparticipationinpreservation-relatedconferences,workshops orprofessionalorganizations.

Volunteer of the Year Award

Thisawardrecognizesanindividualvolunteerwhohasmadesignificantcontributions tothepreservationandpromotionofFlorida’sculturalheritage.Volunteercontributions include,butarenotlimitedto,thefollowing:
