LEADING THE WAY IN ARIZONA’S WATER FUTURE Water has always shaped Arizona—our communities, our economy and the landscapes that make our state a vibrant place to live and work. Today, the future of the Colorado River requires all of us to think differently about how this limited resource is managed. In August, the U.S. Department of the Interior finalized new operating guidelines for Lake Powell Linda Turnage and Lake Mead for Executive Director 2027 and 2028. These guidelines include significant reductions in Colorado River water deliver ies to the Lower Basin states, including Arizona. While the immediate guidelines cover the next two years, the decisions being Warren Runcorn made today wil l President influence how the river is managed for many years to come. For Arizona’s landscape industry, this is not a conversation we can afford to watch from the sidelines. Our industry understands that conservation is necessary. In fact, landscape and irrigation professionals are already helping property owners, businesses and communities reduce water use through efficient irrigation systems, smart controllers, improved maintenance practices, thoughtful plant selection and emerging technologies. We have the knowledge and real-world experience to be part of the solution. ALCA’s goal is to engage early and constructively so that future water policies are practical, effective and grounded in science. We want to help develop responsible conservation strategies before restrictions are imposed without a complete understanding of their long-term consequences. Reducing water use should not mean eliminating the landscapes that provide shade, reduce temperatures, improve air quality, control dust, support tree canopies and contribute to healthier communities. Poorly designed restrictions can create unintended consequences. Science-based water management, however, can protect our water supplies while preserving the environmental, economic and quality-oflife benefits that professionally maintained landscapes provide. 6

This is why ALCA is developing a Water Task Force that will bring together industry professionals, water experts and key stakeholders. The Task Force will help ALCA monitor proposed policies, identify practical conservation solutions, educate our members and ensure that the landscape industry has a credible voice in municipal, state and federal water discussions. We have an opportunity—and a responsibility—to show policymakers that Arizona’s landscape industry is not simply a water user.
We are water-management professionals, conservation partners and an essential resource in building a more resilient Arizona. The path forward will require collaboration, innovation and a willingness to act. By bringing our expertise to the table now, we can help shape solutions that conserve water, protect our communities and support a sustainable future for Arizona. Together, we can lead the way. Cooling Phoenix Through Trees We all know Arizona is hot. With climate change apparent throughout the world, we can certainly feel the effects here, in our own backyard. Daytime temperatures become more extreme, and the nights don’t cool off the way they used to; a recipe that affects your health, plant vitality and certainly your air conditioner. Compounding the broader shifts in climate, rapid urban expansion promotes greater heat retention across our valley. Extensive asphalt, concrete infrastructure, and dense building materials throughout communities absorb radiant energy throughout the day and refuse to let it go at night; a phenomenon called the Urban Heat Island Effect (UHI). As a result of this built environment, both air and soil temperatures in developed Arizona are significantly higher than those measured in the state’s surrounding natural deserts, forests, and agricultural farmlands. One of the most effective tools we have to combat this localized environmental heat is vegetation, which functions as nature’s original air conditioning network. Trees naturally convert carbon dioxide into pure oxygen, helping to put a meaningful dent into atmospheric pollution. A cooling function that is often taken for granted, such as shade produced from trees directly cools ambient air temperatures and significantly reduces evapotranspiration (ET). The overstory in neighborhoods and yards often establish microclimates but serve other natural ecological functions. Beyond direct ambient cooling, shade-producing trees serve vital ecological functions by absorbing radiant heat, stabilizing soil, providing urban wildlife habitat, storing carbon, and vastly improving the natural aesthetic of our communities. As our communities are seeing more extreme temperatures, utilizing botanical resources creates real environmental change.
Planting the Right Tree
Utilizing trees as an urban cooling mechanism is a strategic double-edged sword. Many urban planners, developers, and wellintentioned residents advocate getting tall, wide, fast-growing trees established in urban environments as quickly as possible. However, rapid growth is rarely the complete answer. Effective urban forestry boils down to the fundamentals of site design, right tree, right place. Far too often, municipalities, communities and homeowners rush through the long-term planning decisions and neglect the considerations of mature size, growth characteristics or maintenance demands. When tree selection is rushed or mismanaged, the effects can be apparent after events. Often after an intense monsoon, a client will call with an uprooted tree or broken limbs. Native desert trees, such as mesquite and palo verde, naturally form into a large, multi-stem shrub. These trees that inhabit the urban environment are often manipulated into a single-stem form by poor practices. Previously protected bark and acute branch attachments that were resistant to sun and wind are now exposed, where environmental conditions can leverage this bareness. Branch failure, sunburn, and root plate failure are often signs of over-pruning by creating a single-stem formation. Similarly, fast-growing species such as eucalyptus grow too rapidly to develop dense, strong response wood to environmental strains, leading them to outgrow their allotted spaces and experience structural failure.
At the same time, many of the mature trees across Arizona are currently failing or entering what we arborists call the mortality spiral. As much as we want, no tree lives forever. Many of these mature trees are failing due to changing regional conditions. Urban trees that were abruptly planted in the mid-twentieth century are now struggling from shifted environmental conditions that are far too extreme for their natural thresholds. A balanced, informed selection process can help mitigate these challenges so future generations can enjoy our trees. Although the introduction of non-native species carries a negative stigma, these non-native trees are crucial to enhancing and diversifying the landscape. Trees that are native to the Sonoran Desert have adapted to survive the harsh conditions. With thorns and wide, lowspreading branching habits, these native trees are not always ideal for congested urban areas, as they could pose a significant safety risk. Alternatively, non-native species adapted to our climate can offer crucial support in cooling neighborhoods. While certain introduced species have struggled, others thrive alongside native varieties to build a more resilient overhead canopy across our communities.
Maintaining your Investment
Trees certainly test your patience. When you have the right tree, it may take decades for it to mature into the ideal tree. Nevertheless, planting a tree is an important investment; an investment in your property and environment, but most importantly, an investment for future generations. To ensure that this investment pays off, proper, ongoing stewardship is essential. The most important factor to minimize extreme maintenance is right tree, right place. To cool our environment successfully, we must understand the species’ requirements: growing space above and below ground, nutritional and water needs, and biological provisions. Additional factors of tree care, which are often overlooked, is long-term maintenance. Like any asset, trees require consistent care. Proper pruning, in conjunction with proper planting, can mitigate several costly solutions such as support systems, chemical remediations, and removal. When trees receive proper care and ongoing maintenance, their environmental, monetary and aesthetic value is appreciated over time. By pairing the right species with the right conditions and providing dedicated maintenance, our trees will be around Arizona for generations, keeping our urban areas significantly cooler, our surrounding vegetation healthy, and our communities comfortable. The most crucial phase of tree care, which is also the most frequently forgotten, is long-term maintenance. Like any high-value asset, trees require consistent care, including proper structural pruning to foster strong architecture, timely removal of nursery support stakes before they girdle the expanding trunk, and thoughtful irrigation adjustments as the root system matures. When trees receive proper structural care, their environmental and aesthetic value continuously appreciates over time. By pairing the right species with sufficient physical space to grow and providing dedicated maintenance, our trees will endure in Arizona for generations, keeping our urban areas significantly cooler, our surrounding vegetation healthy, and our communities comfortable.

If you work in Arizona’s landscape industry, you can feel it. Things are changing. Water supplies are getting tighter, temperatures keep climbing, and the weather is not as predictable as it used to be. What worked five or ten years ago does not hold up the same way today. Maintaining high-quality landscapes now takes more than just doing things efficiently. It takes a smarter, more intentional approach. That is where smart irrigation is starting to make a real difference. Traditional irrigation systems were never built for the kind of conditions we deal with here in the desert. Between high evaporation, challenging soil conditions, and stricter water regulations, precision matters more than ever. Today’s smart systems step in by using soil moisture sensors, real time weather data, and advanced controller features to adjust automatically. That takes a lot of the guesswork out of how and when to water. At the same time, one thing I see get overlooked often is this. A controller is only as smart as the system it is connected to. You can have the best technology available, but if the irrigation system is not designed right or maintained properly, it will never perform the way it should. Real results come from pairing good technology with a solid and efficient foundation. One of the biggest improvements in recent years has been the combination of flow sensing with smart controllers. These systems are constantly monitoring water use and can quickly catch problems like leaks, line breaks, or unexpected flow issues. Instead of letting those problems run, the system can shut things down automatically. That saves water, prevents damage, and helps avoid unnecessary costs. In Arizona, that level of awareness and control goes a long way. Another piece that continues to stand out is the importance of training. As these systems get more advanced, it becomes even more important to understand how to set them up and use them the right way. Whether that training comes from a manufacturer or a local distributor, it makes a difference. Teams that take the time to learn technology tend to get better results, fewer issues, and more consistency in the field. The impact overall is clear. Water use goes down. Landscapes stay healthier. And there is a much better understanding of how systems are performing. Being able to adjust remotely, especially during extreme heat or during monsoon season, adds another level of control. With reporting tools built in, it is also easier to track savings and meet compliance requirements. Across Arizona, adoption is continuing to grow. HOAs, commercial properties, and municipalities are all putting more focus on improving their irrigation systems. It is not just about saving money anymore. It is about reducing risk and being more responsible with water. At this point, smart irrigation, especially when combined with flow monitoring, is quickly becoming standard. Looking ahead, the direction is clear. Irrigation systems are becoming more connected, more automated, and more responsive in real time. In a place where every drop matters, having that level of insight and control is not just helpful anymore. It is essential.

On September 4, 2026, Earnhardt Auto Centers and the Earnhardt family will mark the 75th anniversary of the dealership group, celebrating at the location where it all began: Earnhardt Ford in Chandler. The public event thanks the community for its support over the years. “Our NoBull approach to selling cars started in 1951 when my grandfather drove a brand new Ford all the way home from Detroit,” said Dodge Earnhardt. “A young Tex Earnhardt brought it to Chandler, sold it, and proved that he had what it took to be a new car dealer by selling one truck at a time and eventually building the foundation of the enterprise we see here, today.” Earnhardt Auto Centers has grown from one Ford store in September of 1951 to 17 dealerships representing 15 different brands, today. “At nearly 21, he became the youngest man to earn the right to have a Ford franchise,” said Bull Earnhardt. “That was September 1951, and now, 75 years later, we celebrate the spirit of Tex in the straight-forward way we do business and the intentional way we share with the community.” “My grandfather Tex became a beloved public figure by riding a steer in TV commercials,” said Derby Earnhardt, “but his real fame came one car at a time, through his commitment to No Bull prices and neighborly customer service. His true heart showed in the way he gave back to the community.” “Dad taught the family that we owed our success to the community, and we should always show our gratitude by sharing with others,” said sons Hal Earnhardt III and 18

HOW TO IMPLEMENT A WIDE-AREA IRRIGATION CONTROL SYSTEM WITHOUT WIRES Installing irrigation control systems across large landscapes has traditionally required significant labor, material costs, and project complexity. Wireless irrigation control offers an increasingly popular alternative, using licensefree LoRa® radio technology to solve common installation and communication challenges. Wireless systems offer several economic advantages: • Cross streets, railroad tracks, and hardscapes without plowing control wires or disrupting established landscapes • Reduce the need for costly copper wiring (which also improves surge resistance) • Avoid interference with existing in-ground infrastructure These systems are available as optional plug-in modules for compatible controllers, or as complete wireless solutions that use strategically placed “hubs” with AC power and cloud connectivity. The hubs, positioned as centrally as possible to the valves, connect to web-based software via cellular, Ethernet, or Wi-Fi. They then communicate directly to the battery-operated transceivers at the valve boxes via LoRa radio. The transceivers are built into waterproof mini-controllers that can store downloaded programs and run by themselves without further commands from the software. Powered by alkaline batteries — or optional solar panel kits — these mini-controllers are designed to operate with tested DC-Latching Solenoids.
Simplifying Wireless Control with the SkyCommand™ System
A leading example of these systems is the next-generation SkyCommand Wireless Control System from Hunter Industries. Ideal for projects where infrastructure, terrain, or distance create installation challenges, it includes a wall-mounted Universal Communication Hub (UCH) with selected communication modules for connection to web-based Centralus™ Software, along with a LoRa module for field connections. Battery-operated controllers (BOCs), available in 1-, 2-, or 4-station sizes, are mounted in the valve boxes needing control. The wiring to DC-Latching Solenoids can be extended up to 100', allowing one device to operate four different valves independently. The BOCs are completely waterproof (IP68 rated), with only a small retaining cap extending about a ½" above the valve box lid to survive mowing and string trimmers. To extend field radio coverage, install the Hunter Antenna Extension Kit for the LoRa radio in the hub. The higher the antenna is mounted outside the hub enclosure, the farther it can communicate to the valve boxes. The standard kit comes with 9' of cable that can be extended up to 25' with lower-loss cable, allowing approximately 2,000' of coverage to be achieved in level terrain with ideal conditions. 20

For maximum coverage, add wireless solar-powered repeaters. The repeaters are capable of being mounted on walls or poles, clearing obstacles such as large buildings, and singlehandedly doubling wireless ranges, depending on terrain. In the SkyCommand System, several repeaters can be used to extend coverage in multiple directions. A maximum of two in-line repeaters can be placed in a single location to reach distant valves up to 3 miles away. The higher the repeaters are located, the farther they communicate. Together, the radio hub, repeaters, and local BOCs constitute a site. SkyCommand allows for an unlimited number of sites, making it possible to add new ones as needed to extend coverage and achieve virtually unlimited irrigation control across expansive areas. A site can host up to 100 BOCs and, if all are 4-station models, up to 400 valves — all without field wiring. All sites can be viewed in a map format with GPS positioning of each device for control and future service reference. Some BOC versions are specially designed for flow monitoring and master valve control. They can report flow throughout the day and be programmed to detect and react to high-flow conditions offline. All BOCs include an optional soil moisture sensor input, which can prevent irrigation when a predetermined soil moisture level has been reached. Individual BOCs can also be mounted above ground with wall or pole mounts to support extended range. The single greatest factor in successful wireless irrigation control planning is antenna placement — from the hub and repeaters to the individual BOC locations. With proper placement, contractors can maximize coverage, ensure reliable control, and simplify the management of the most complex sites.
