As we look back on 2025 and ahead to an exciting year “In Full Bloom,” ALCA continues to flourish because of the dedication, heart, and passion of our incredible members. This year was filled with meaningful wins, inspiring achievements, and powerful moments that reflect the strength of Arizona’s landscape industry. The 2025 Awards Gala showcased the very best of our community. From innovative landscape projects to dedicated professionals earning well-deserved recognition, the evening celebrated excellence at every turn. We were especially proud to honor this year’s Scholarship Recipients, whose commitment to the green industry represents a bright future ahead. Thanks to member generosity, these students will receive support through the Green Industry Scholarship Fund (in memory of Sky Blu Underwood), the Linda Turnage ALCA General Scholarship Fund, and the Jim Executive Director Trog Water Management Memorial Fund, helping them pursue education, certifications, and career-advancing opportunities. We’re also thrilled to share the outstanding success of our 2025 Silent and Live Auction, held during the Awards Gala. This theme reflects more than the natural beauty we cultivate; it represents the growth of our members, the advancement of our industry, and the collective momentum that continues to define ALCA. Our industry thrives when knowledge, collaboration, and commitment come together, and ALCA remains the foundation for that success. Through education, certification, and shared best practices, we help ensure that every landscape professional in Arizona is equipped to flourish. At Scapes, the company I am proud to Warren Runcorn lead, I see every day how valuable ALCA’s 2026 ALCA President resources are in shaping exceptional work. CONVERSION OF TURF AREAS IN ARIZONA By Ursula K. Schuch
Converting turf areas to low water use landscapes is encouraged in arid climates to save water and lower maintenance costs. The process begins with designing the new landscape, removing existing turf and irrigation, installing alternative ground covers, and adding an appropriate irrigation system if needed. Vegetation or inert materials can replace turf, each with benefits and drawbacks. Maintaining functional irrigation and protecting the root zone of existing trees are essential during construction and after construction. The following summarizes the process and provides implementation guidance. Replacing turf with low water use landscapes reduces potable water use, lowers maintenance, and can improve water quality by eliminating recurring fertilizer and pesticide applications. Turf to xeriscape conversions can cut outdoor water use by up to 50%. A Bermuda or Bermuda hybrid lawn with winter overseed in Arizona’s low desert needs more than 55 inches of irrigation annually while xeriscapes typically require less than 18 inches. Incentive programs in several Arizona cities including the greater Phoenix area, Prescott, Flagstaff, and Tucson offer rebates for residential, commercial, and HOA properties that remove healthy turf and install xeriscapes with at least 50% plant cover at maturity. Some programs offer rebates for installing passive or active rainwater harvesting systems. Many municipalities specify low water use plants and prohibit the installation of artificial turf as a replacement in non-residential landscapes. Nutrient losses can continue for years. Lawns also cool surfaces significantly, often 10°F to 14°F more than hardscapes, so removal may increase temperatures depending on replacement materials. Key steps for converting traditional turfgrass lawns to alternative landscapes include planning, protecting existing trees and shrubs, turf removal, installing new ground covers and irrigation, and aftercare. Once the type of conversion has been decided, a budget drafted, contracts for turf removal, irrigation, and plants have been awarded, plans for tree preservation are finalized, and installation of new irrigation and plants are completed, the work can begin. Some tasks are season-sensitive, especially herbicide applications and transplanting. Living turf needs to be removed and the most effective way to kill a Bermuda grass lawn is to apply the herbicide glyphosate while turf is actively growing during the summer months from June to September; multiple applications may be needed. Glyphosate is now available in many formulations, some of them containing other active ingredients that can cause permanent damage or death to plants; therefore, product selection is critical. After turf death, sod and roots are removed, the site is graded, and irrigation is installed. Sod cutters can damage shallow tree roots, adding stress to these plants. Once turf irrigation is unnecessary, the system can be removed or converted to drip irrigation to irrigate the remaining trees and shrubs and new vegetation. The best planting time is from late fall to early spring to minimize heat stress. Follow-up tasks include mulch8

ing, weed control, proper irrigation and monitoring plant health. Stress in remaining trees may appear years after the work has been completed. Protecting existing trees is essential as damage to trees can be delayed and irreversible. Trees and shrubs previously irrigated with turf systems depend on frequent watering and fertilization. Abrupt removal of the lawn causes severe stress, especially to large trees and shrubs. Mature trees are valuable assets, especially if they have a long lifespan; they impart many benefits that may take decades to achieve after young trees are planted. For the management of trees during construction, a tree protection zone outlines the root area to prevent damage to the trunk, branches, and roots, and the area that requires regular irrigation during and after the conversion. Drip irrigation is the most efficient method of watering trees. Irrigation should cover 75% or more of the root zone under and beyond the canopy. Applying a 3 - 4-inch-thick layer of organic mulch over the root zone conserves soil moisture and protects tree roots. Alternatives to replacing ornamental turf include xeriscapes with low water use plants or groundcovers, artificial turf, gravel, organic mulch, or bare soil, each with its own trade-offs. Xeriscape landscapes with native, or desert adapted plants require less water than turfgrass but cover less surface area and provide considerably less evaporative cooling. Water efficient groundcovers offer green space with greater water efficiency and less maintenance than traditional turfgrass. Depending on plant type and density, they will provide cooling, the appeal of a lawn, and may support limited foot traffic. Artificial turf is an option for those preferring the appearance of green grass. While artificial turf requires some maintenance, heat retention is a major concern as surface temperatures can reach 120°F to 180°F on a hot day. The process of converting existing turfgrass to artificial turf requires removal of the grass root system which will also strip off the upper root systems of mature trees and shrubs and compaction of the gravel base under artificial turf makes the area unsuitable for the root systems of live plants. Rock gravel, commonly used in Southwest landscapes, conserves water and prevents erosion. Soil surface temperatures and soil temperatures were similar to bare soil, but rock gravel does not provide any cooling effects compared to plants. Organic mulch is commonly used to cover the soil under trees and shrubs to conserve soil moisture, prevent erosion, and reduce soil temperature below ground compared to bare soil or rock mulch. Organic mulch has higher soil surface temperatures during the day and lower ones at night compared to bare soil or rock mulch. Bare soil may appeal as a low-maintenance option, but it has significant downsides such as erosion, higher surface temperatures compared to vegetated areas and weed growth.

Held in celebration of the outstanding projects and people who elevate the standards of craftsmanship and environmental stewardship, the gala brought together contractors, designers, students, sponsors, and partners from across Arizona. Each year, the Excellence in Landscaping Awards program recognizes projects that demonstrate superior skill in design, installation, and maintenance, while reflecting ALCA’s values of professionalism and Sustainable Landscape Management. INTRODUCING RYAN KIBNER Co-founder of Adaptive Plant Health & Weed Solutions, and ALCA’s Education Committee Member By: Frances Craik
With more than 25 years of experience in plant health care, arboriculture, and sustainable pest management, Ryan Kibner has become a respected leader in creating sciencedriven, environmentally responsible solutions for Arizona landscapes. After decades working in his family’s company—where most of the business centered on weed control—he chose to branch off and build something broader. Today, as coRyan Kibner founder of Adaptive Adaptive Plant Health and Weed Solutions Plant Health & Weed Solutions, Ryan is pursuing his passion for saving trees, restoring turf, and delivering science-backed solutions that conserve water and strengthen urban landscapes.
ALCA: Ryan, can you share a little about your background and how you first got started in the industry?
Ryan: I grew up working in the family business, which was heavily focused on weed care. It gave me a strong foundation in the field, but over time I wanted to expand beyond just controlling weeds. I saw a bigger opportunity in saving trees and fixing turf, and that became the driving force behind my career.
ALCA: What inspired you to launch Adaptive Plant Health & Weed Solutions?
Ryan: I wanted to create a company rooted in science-based practices, not just short-term fixes. Adaptive was built around the idea of saving as many trees as possible, conserving water, and creating landscapes that help cool our communities.
ALCA: You’ve worked in Arizona, Oklahoma, and even Costa Rica. How has that shaped your perspective?
Ryan: Each region brings its own challenges—Arizona’s heat and salinity, Oklahoma’s heavy soils, Costa Rica’s biodiversity. What I learned is that soil health is always the foundation, but the strategies have to adapt. That adaptability is what defines our company.
ALCA: What challenges do you see as most pressing in Arizona landscapes today?
Ryan: Tree loss from heat stress is the biggest one. Add high pH, salt buildup, and diseases like Sooty Canker or Texas Root Rot, and contractors

are constantly fighting uphill battles. The good news is many of these problems are preventable with the right science.
ALCA: What solutions are you offering contractors to address these problems?
Ryan: We’re using growth regulators like Cambistat and TrimTec to extend tree life and reduce drought stress. We also lean on biologicals like Trichoderma, mycorrhizae, and compost teas to strengthen root systems. Soil amendments rebuild microbial life and improve water efficiency. It’s all about building resilience from the ground up.
ALCA: How do you see Adaptive working with contractors rather than competing against them?
Ryan: We’re here to support, not compete. Contractors already handle maintenance; we bring specialized plant health expertise that helps them keep landscapes thriving long term. Together, we can deliver more value to their clients.
ALCA: And finally, what’s your longterm vision?
Ryan: I want to see healthier urban forests across Arizona. If we can save trees, restore turf, conserve water, and design landscapes that actually help reduce heat in our communities, then we’ll have made a real impact. That’s the mission behind Adaptive.
