I

h ope all of you have had the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of our state this past winter and spring. Our state is alive with an abundance of rain which has filled our lakes and reservoirs; mountains capped white with snow, Saguaros swelling with joy, and desert floors sharing their beautiful spring flowers. As we approach summer and all these memories fade, take the time to appreciate how beautiful the place we call home.

As I write this, Health Care Reform is trying to make its way into our lives. From a business standpoint most of us feel that this will

have an impact on the high cost we already spend to make our businesses successful. As we complete our census, Immigration Reform is trying to find its way back to the forefront.

Strong opposition to any type of reform is being proposed by Senate Member Russell Pierce and his Senate Bill 1070. The provisions of this act are to “allow local and state authorities to work together to discourage unlawful entry and presences of illegal aliens in the United States. The intent is to allow cooperation and assistance in enforcement of immigration laws”. Please take the time to read this bill, we as an association feel there are many good points to this bill, but at the same time feel that parts of the bill are not in the best interest of our members. As Senate Bill 1070 evolves, our Government Affairs and Public Relations committee will keep you apprised with important updates and changes.

As I engage in conversations with many types of business owners, it seems that spending is on the rise. On a recent visit to the popular arts and crafts fair in Tempe, some of the artisans I spoke with felt that they were having some of their best sales success in years. As I sat at my Easter Sunrise Services conversations with fellow church members revealed the same sentiments. I don’t know if it’s stimulus money or tax returns or consumer confidence or a combination of all of them, but it appears some of the cobwebs are starting to shake loose. Obviously our state and nation have a long way to go, but let’s hope we are heading in the right direction.

Your board members continue to strive to improve the quality of your association.

Currently we are involved with a review and revision of a proposed Sustainable Maintenance Guide for landscape care for the desert southwest. We hope to make these the standards in which all landscape maintenance companies will strive for. It will improve the quality of the landscapes we install and maintain, and improve the quality of those doing the maintaining and installations. We look forward to sharing the progress as this guide becomes a viable tool.

I look forward to seeing and talking with all of you at future ALCA events.

s I was driving to work one fine April morning, I admired the beautifully landscaped and maintained property all along the road. Not only were there no weeds in sight in spite of the bountiful spring rain, but the properly designed plant material was mature and displayed their best blooming potential.

I wondered who had designed, who had installed and who was maintaining this roadside property because it would surely be a formidable contender in ALCA’s “Excellence In Landscaping” awards competition.

At ALCA’s last Board of Director’s meeting, I had asked which board members were submitting projects and participating in the awards competition. All hands were raised except for one lonely contractor, whose name shall remain anonymous. He

asked, “What benefit do I and my company receive from participating?” The responses quickly followed.

First, award winning recipients have an excellent opportunity to market their company to existing and potential clients. One Board member told the story of how he went into a bidding process where his competitor neatly displayed their award plaques of the property that went out to bid. Guess what happened?

The competitor retained their contract with the property owner. Contractors have invited the property owners and managers as their guests to the banquet so that they can witness their beautifully landscaped properties being honored. One ALCA member sent out a newsletter to his clients that read, “How did your landscaper do in 2009?” In it, he listed all of the awards received on various projects that were entered into the competition.

In addition, all award recipients and their properties are featured in one of the 6 issues of the ALCA Influence magazine. This publication is distributed to all ALCA members, your legislators, affiliates of the green industry and all licensed landscape contractors in the state….nearly 2,600 copies.

Employee recognition is key for employee morale. This is a great opportunity to recognize and honor supervisors and foremen for their hard work, dedication and pride for the projects they have been responsible for. One company ordered extra plaques to give to their supervisors and foremen at their Christmas party. Many companies allow their supervisors and foremen to accept awards on stage during the awards program.

Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) Arizona Chapter

T

he Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute (ICPI) Arizona Chapter is a local organization made up of over forty-five (45) industry leaders including manufacturers, distributors, contractors and ancillary producers. The purpose of the Chapter of ICPI is to market and promote the use of concrete pavers and segmental retaining walls in the state of Arizona.

In 2006, the ICPI Arizona Chapter was officially chartered as a Chapter.

Membership in the Chapter peaked at sixty-three (63) in 2008 and there are currently forty-seven (47) members. There has been a lot of progress made over the years including but not limited to a section for pavers in the phone book and recognition for proper paver installation standards by the Arizona Registrar of Contractors in their standards book. None of the progress would have been possible without the support and contributions of their members. The Chapter is committed to supporting the efforts of members by providing a nice forum for networking, education and business solutions.

Despite the economic downturn, hardscape products are still viewed favorably and expected to provide great growth opportunities for many years to come. ICPI reports that the concrete paver industry doubled its total square feet sold every five (5) years between the organizations year of inception 1989 and 2004. The current economic trading environment has slowed that growth but research shows that the industry is still thriving despite the downturn. The trend toward outdoor living has encouraged homeowners to transcend the backyard from a dream to a reality. More homeowners are choosing to invest in their homes as they plan to be in those homes longer and are taking fewer vacations making the outdoor living environment more attractive, realistic and affordable.

Hardscape products are typically seen as an attractive system due to their aesthetic beauty. Although you can’t dispute the aesthetic beauty of hardscape products, it is the functionality of the materials that make them the best solution to any project. Concrete pavers and segmental retaining walls are incredibly flexible in design and durable in application. Simply put, you are only limited by your own imagination when it comes to a hardscape project. These products can also have a positive impact on the carbon footprint of our environment. For example, permeable pavers are a great alternative in providing for a pavement system that will also capture for reuse Mother Nature’s most precious resource, water.

L

et me start with an important question...what is your most valuable business asset?

Some would say it is their equipment. Others would argue it is their building.

But when you think about it, your most important asset is your customer base.

Without customers you don’t need equipment or buildings. So how do you protect this most valuable asset? What do you do to minimize the risk that a departed sales person will take your customer list and pilfer your customer base? The answer is to have well crafted employment covenants to minimize this risk.

The law disfavors agreements that keep someone out of their chosen profession for a significant period of time. But the law will allow for non solicitation/non service agreements that prohibit a departed employee from soliciting or servicing your customers after leaving.

In addition, you can protect your customer lists and other unique business information with “anti piracy” agreements requiring return of such data and prohibiting its use. And, you can prohibit the pirating of your employees by the departed person as well.

The law even lets you carve our certain competitors and prohibit your former employee from working for them for a period of time, within reason.

The reach of these covenants is limited however. You must have a protectable business interest in the customers you seek to protect. The length and breadth of the restrictions must be reasonable, or the agreement itself may become unenforceable. This all requires careful analysis of your business and your customers.

However doing nothing—having no covenants—is an invitation to your departed employees to take customers. Like many others risks this is one where an ounce of prevention (employment covenants) is worth a pound of cure.

Sometimes this issue confronts you in another way as a business owner when you hire someone who executed an employment covenant for their prior employer. It is important that you know about these agreements and review the terms. Soliciting the prior company’s clientele through your new employee may subject you to an interference claim. Protracted and expensive litigation is not something you want, and it is important to understand prior agreements your new employee has made.

Get your folks to sign well crafted covenants and protect your business. Also, be fully aware of any prior covenants your employees have signed.

Risk management like this helps to avoid the pain of spending your dollars and days in court.

Riverwalk Arizona – The Groundskeeper Riverwalk Arizona is set on prime land owned by the Salt River Pima Maricopa Community, home to the Pima and Maricopa Indians, descendants of the ancient Hohokam Indians.

Riverwalk consists of 3 buildings surrounded by a naturally maintained landscape that is all trimmed by hand as power trimmers are prohibited on this property. The tribe has imposed a height limitation of 40 feet so that the mountain views of McDowell, Four Peaks and Superstition’s will not be obstructed. They have banned palm trees, which are ubiquitous in Scottsdale but not native to the region, and stipulated that all pedestrian areas must be shaded. The landscape reflects the early settlement of the land by the Indians along the Salt River hence you will find a man made river flowing along the west side of the property providing a home for wild life and a relaxing atmosphere for the tenants of Riverwalk. The landscape palette consists of Palo Verde, Mesquite, Acacia, Sissoo and Ironwood trees. Beneath the trees you will find a variety of natural desert plants such as Sage, Red Yucca, Deer Grass, and Verbena just to name a few.

Riverwalk Arizona is one of the largest projects built on Indian land to date, between Via de Ventura and Indian Bend Road on the east side on Loop 101 in the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community.

Norterra Shopping Center – CareScape, Inc. We are privileged to maintain the Red Development Property, Norterra Shopping Center. We create a clean and safe environment for families with children. There are over 1.5 million feet of parking areas. Norterra is in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. We care for 231 native salvage trees. There are 7.2 acres of desert adapted plant material including 970 shrubs. Among them are valentines, red yuccas, fairy dusters, desert spoons and 3,154 gold mound lantana. We continue to install areas as the new stores are added. Initial soil tests revealed micronutrient deficiencies which were treated. An advanced 2 wire irrigation system was installed to handle the 72 valves on the property. The signature fountain is surrounded with over 1,000 plants 3 times a year. Its beauty is spectacular despite the constant vehicle and foot traffic. 110 large blooming pots line the walkways throughout the varieties of blooming flowers. It is a pleasure to watch people enjoy the wonderful atmosphere.

Thinking back to the first time I met my clients on this project; only one word came to mind: “ENTERTAINING”. They wanted a place to enjoy and invite friends and family to ENTERTAIN. The propane fire pit and water feature was the first on top of their wish list. The wall behind their water feature acts as a screen wall, where the dog kennel behind is disguised.

Second item on their list is that they wanted to incorporate their collection of antique farm equipment into their landscape design. The back wall now acts as the display of these antique treasures.

The Ramada is probably the biggest in town. Under this structure is an outdoor kitchen with a built in gas grill, bar style seating and decorative lighting to enhance the red adobe like features which makes this a perfect place to get out of the hot Arizona sun.

The grandchildren were also kept in mind. They did not want a tremendous amount of grass but wanted just enough to have a small play area for them to run around. St. Augustine Grass was used due to the shade that the trees have produced.

When the sun goes down the backyard transforms into another total perspective.

Low voltage lighting was added throughout the entire backyard to help light all the eye catching features throughout.

This project is definitely a place to ENTERTAIN with friends and family.

Tree Pruning Workshop

May 12, 2010 Instructor: Glenn Fahringer Objectives: • Understand basic tree and shrub growth structure and function i.e.

Roots, trunk, limbs, leaves, xylem and phloem.

• Pruning process i.e. purpose for pruning, time of year, understanding proper cuts and branch selection, % of tree pruning at any one time.

• Pruning safety i.e. climbing, ladders and working around power lines.

• Pruning shrubs i.e. hedging, shearing, natural pruning and rejuvenation.

• Equipment i.e. hand saws, chain saws, pruners and climbing gear.

“Why send my guys to an all day class to learn Tree and Shrub pruning?” In these hard economic times that is a very legitimate question. With confidence I can say there is never a more important time to train and teach proper pruning techniques than when clients are shopping and comparing your company to all the others.

The goal of the ACLP Tree and Shrub pruning class is to enable the student to leave the class with a basic knowledge and confidence they may use the very next day on the job.

In these classes, plant functions are covered so that students have a better understanding of how and why a plant responds to pruning. The focus is on common terms and basic functions.

The student is taught to identify the reasons for pruning, IE safety, aesthetics, bloom and fruit production.

The student also learns how to target the right branch to remove and how to correctly remove it.

The class is wrapped up with discussion of proper tools, safety techniques, and a walk around the campus for some hands on instruction and discussion. These are just a few of the topics discussed in the curriculum. The instructor, Glenn Fahringer, encourages the students to participate and ask questions that they may be embarrassed to ask an immediate supervisor or a fellow co-worker. The participation has almost always been lively and informative.

This workshop will not make an arborist out of the attendants in one day, but it will give them the skills to set them apart and elevate them above the competition!

Spiders, bees and scorpions…OH MY! Valve boxes are a great home to whatever crawls. If you run across bees in the valve box, leave them alone and do not do anything to agitate them.

If you are attacked, cover your face, run immediately into a building or vehicle and do not jump into a pool. Some varieties of bees will wait for you to come up for air. Do not swat at the bees to anger them and call 9-1-1.

In this workshop, the instructors will cover the entire irrigation system from the water meter up through the backflow and valves on out to the sprinklers and emitters.

Since irrigators bury all of their work, it is vital to know what each product looks like and how it works.

The more a contractor understands the quicker they will be at repairing irrigation systems. It is for this reason that the instructors take the time in class to discuss the functions of each item and common problems that occur, so that troubleshooting can go faster.

The Importance Of Proper Paver Installation

A

dding paver installation to your list of offerings to your clients can be very profitable – but please consider the future of the industry in your installations. Poorly installed pavers leave a bad impression not only on the customer with an ugly driveway or patio, but on all of their neighbors, friends, relatives and anyone that passes by.

There are some simple basics to a proper installation. First, as with building anything, your finished product is only as good as the foundation on which it was built. There are very few areas of the Valley that have soils adequate to support even pedestrian pavers, and certainly not vehicular pavers. Soil testing can be done to assure the existing soils are of a grade and composition to support the loads. It is usually simpler to install compacted, graded ABC base materials.

Locally, a simple rule of thumb is; 2” for pedestrian areas and 4” for vehicular areas. These are minimum requirements. Poor soils in the area, heavier vehicles and many other factors can cause the need for thicker bases. Along with the base material is proper compaction. Plate compaction to a minimum density of 95%, with proper moisture is critical.

Next, is the bedding sand. First, it should be of the proper grade – ASTM C33 (concrete sand). The sand should always be dry. It should be screeded (not compacted) 1” thick. Proper grades should be obtained by the base installation; the sand should be a constant thickness. Bedding sand can be a maximum of 1 ½” thick (screeded) to a minimum of ¾” thick (screeded), however overlay projects can use less sand.

Pavers should then be laid tight and straight. To obtain a good blend of color, you should always pull pavers from several pallets and up and down, not by layer. Even if using a solid color paver, this is good practice.

The installation of joint sand and compaction follows the laying of the pavers. The joint sand can be the same sand as was used for the bedding sand. Many contractors find the size of the grains of the bedding sand to be too large to efficiently sweep into the joints. It is also acceptable to use ASTM C144 (mason sand) as joint sand. The sand should be spread over the pavers and vibrated into the joints with a plate compactor. You may also choose to install polymeric sand as your joint sand. Polymeric sand contains a binding agent that will effectively eliminate any sand erosion, weed growth, or ant hills.

Edge restraint in our area is typically different than in other areas of the country. The edge restraint is critical to the life of the installation. If the edge pavers become loose, the entire system begins to shift and fail.

Plastic or metal edge restraint is acceptable, but remember that the spikes used need to be driven into the compacted ABC base that must extend at least 6” beyond the spike. That will require excavating a larger area and installing more base. Typically, our area uses a concrete set border as an edge restraint. There should be sufficient concrete under the border paver for support and it should be brought up the edge of the paver approximately half way to prevent lateral movement. There are many instances that will require a substantially stronger edge restraint. For example, a curving driveway on a steep grade will probably require a fully reinforced curb on the sides to prevent lateral movement out the edges, and may even require concrete dividers down the drive to prevent shifting down the driveway. Simply put, if the edge restraint fails, it is not acceptable.

Finally, the cuts along the outside edge must be acceptable. The standard is that no joint width exceeds 3/8”. It is also best to avoid “slivers” of pavers. Always try to use a larger paver next to the border to avoid slivers.

This is a quick “short course” of proper installation. Your local Arizona chapter of the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute holds training classes on a regular basis. ALCA BULLETIN BOARD MEMBER MIXER Thank you to Lynx Professional Grills for hosting February Member Mixer at Southwest Gas Outdoor Living Patio in Tempe.

The evening air was crisp. The heat from the Lynx natural gas patio heaters created a few favorite cocoon sites and gathering points, inviting the 80 plus ALCA Members and guests to huddle, commiserate and enjoy themselves for a relaxing evening of camaraderie, good food and a bit of education.

The mixer on February 17 was held at the Southwest Gas Outdoor Living Patio in Tempe.
