TABLE OF CONTENTS

The 2021-2022 school year was intentionally grounded in the spirit of community.

After a long period of global uncertainty, the AOS community committed to a year of reconnection and a return to the traditions that define our family. With incredible enthusiasm, all of our major events took place in person. The Back to School Bash welcomed our families back to campus, Mrs. Nikkie cooked hundreds of pounds of delicious spaghetti for our annual Spaghetti Dinner, our Christmas programs returned to the Cathedral, we finally celebrated our 50th anniversary with friends and family, our gala surpassed all expectations, Grandparents & Special Friends Day saw over 1000 attendees, and we concluded the year with a memorable Olympics.

While these traditional events undoubtedly brought a sense of togetherness back to AOS, it was all of the smaller moments that reminded us to cherish connection. Students and teachers returned to full classrooms, Chapel Buddies entered the Cathedral hand-in-hand once again, high-fives and hugs lit up our hallways, and most importantly, parents were invited back for breakfast, lunch, sporting events, plays and musicals, and all of the wonderful student learning showcases in between.

The vibrancy of our community is unmatched, and I am proud to say that this year’s record-breaking Annual Fund campaign raised over $1 million for our school. Your generosity ensures that AOS will continue to foster a community filled with agape and academic excellence.

SCHOOL FINANCE CHARTS

WORD FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Dear AOS family,

I recently made a new friend named George, a Greek archaeologist and author who will be moving to Houston this fall. During a visit to the U.S earlier this year, George had the opportunity to tour AOS and told me how impressed he was that our school had achieved the ancient Greek ideal here on the corner of Yoakum Boulevard. George explained that almost every ancient site in Greece has three components: a theater, a stadium and a temple, demonstrating the importance of mind, body, and spirit existing in harmony. George saw that harmony in AOS through the obvious commitment to excellence in academics, the emphasis on athletics, the infusion of the arts into our environment and curriculum, and the importance of the spiritual development of our AOS students through our connection and proximity to the Cathedral. George’s observation reiterated how beautifully AOS is fulfilling its mission in the everyday life of the school.

It is the AOS community that makes the realization of the AOS mission possible. I want to start by thanking Dr. Fragomeni and our extraordinary faculty, staff, and administration who work tirelessly with love for each student that is entrusted to them. I also want to express my sincere gratitude to the many donors and volunteers whose support and engagement makes it possible to provide so many exciting opportunities for our students. From the record-breaking Annual Fund and Gala fundraising to the amazing participation of our families in all of these events and many others, parental and community involvement teaches our students the importance of every kind of stewardship.

All of you have made a profound difference in educating children at AOS and helping the school fulfill its mission.

I also want to extend a special thank you to the Board of Trustees for their unwavering dedication to the AOS mission and the many ways they have shown their love for, and commitment to AOS through the last few challenging years. I want to recognize our

outgoing trustees who have served the school in so many capacities through the years: Tammy Ahlgren, Demetrios Anaipakos, Eyvette Lopez Hetherington, Mike Koinis, Sean Maher, Michael Scheurich and Tiffany Utterson. Their leadership in committee work, fundraising, and strategic planning will impact AOS for many years to come and for that we are so appreciative. As I complete my term, I want to also express my confidence in the exceptional trustees who will continue to serve our school, led by Bob Collins as Chair.

With respect to the financial condition of our school, I am pleased to report that AOS has paid off all indebtedness incurred in connection with the implementation of Phase 1 of the Master Plan (the fundraising and design for the Katherine Veletsos Lower School, Moss/Andrews Dining Hall, Foshee Family Pavilion and the Pefanis Family Courtyard) four years early. The Board has now turned its attention to preparing for the fundraising and design for Phase 2, which will create a new arts, athletics, and enrichment complex for AOS. Various Board committees have already been working the past few years to queue up the project so that we will be ready to start when the time is right.

At the start of this year, middle school students were surprised and excited when they returned from the summer to find a space that has been updated and improved.This upgrade has been planned and budgeted for many years and is the result of the efforts of Dr. Fragomeni, Bryant Richardson, and the Finance and Facilities Committees of the Board. It will definitely enhance the experience of our middle school students.

It has been my honor to serve as Board Chair for the last four years and a blessing to be involved in the AOS community for over 20 years. I have never been more confident about the future of AOS. Under Dr. Fragomeni’s visionary leadership, with the support of his outstanding team, and the continued blessing, support, and prayers of Fr. Michael and the AGOC clergy, AOS will continue to be the school that fully prepares our students for any present or future challenges.

The AOS Annual Fund is vital to the daily operations at AOS.

It provides essential, unrestricted income to support the school’s current-year operating budget for items not covered by tuition. Your monetary gift is an investment in your child’s future because those funds directly benefit their academic and extracurricular experience today. The Annual Fund provides support for a wide range of expenses including professional development for our faculty and staff, technology at all grade levels, support for the fine arts programs and athletic programs, and much more.

The sustainability provided by a robust general endowment ensures that AOS will continue to embrace innovation and maintain academic excellence for our students today and for years to come.

AOS ENDOWMENT FUND

Endowment funds are similar to savings accounts which generate income through wise investments of principal. A percentage of the endowment’s income provides cash toward annual operating expenses. A common way for a school to grow an endowment is through a planned gift such as a bequest or a charitable remainder trust.

THE PARENT TEACHER CLUB PRESIDENT

Years ago, our eldest daughter moved to AOS for middle school. My husband wanted to make sure she had a strong education, and the bonus of honoring his Greek heritage didn’t hurt either! Little did he know that choice would lead to five Georgiou children graduating from our beloved AOS.

Strong academics may have drawn us in, but once we were on campus, we knew we had found our “village.”

The love (agape) we ALL felt from administrators, staff, children, and parents is what kept us here for 21 years! This amazing village is what continues to make AOS the special place it is, and our parent volunteers of the PTC are its cornerstone.

Even before school began, our E Phili Mas, Used Uniform, and Back to School Bash Chairs were hard at work making sure everyone started the year exhilarated and prepared. October brought joy when we were able to have our Book Fair on campus and enjoy an al fresco Spaghetti Dinner and Bake Sale. To round out fall, our Service Learning Chairs organized and executed an amazing schoolwide Booksgiving celebration that warmed our hearts while helping others.

As the holidays approached, we were thrilled to see our children sing again in the various Christmas programs! Our Christmas Program/Robes Chair and Lower School/Middle School Art Angels busily worked behind the scenes to make everything a success.

February was a whirlwind. Our Faculty & Staff Appreciation Chairs helped shower our teachers and staff with love, while our Gala Chairs busily made final arrangements for the Gala. March arrived, and like magic, the parents of AOS arrived at a recordbreaking, fundraising Gala. As the end of the year approached, the festivities continued. We were able to gather to see the incredible art displays at the Eikon Art Show and experience the thrill of a sweet Olympics… TOGETHER!

We are so fortunate the PTC has volunteers to chair, not only our treasured large events, but numerous committees who work all year long, often behind the scenes. The Chairs of our Classical and Musical Countdown, Care Committee, Helping Hands, Spirit Sales, Visual Art Displays, Art Angels, PTC Closet Organizer, Team Sports, and Room Parents spend the year making sure that our campus, parents, and students continue to have what they need to feel loved and stay informed.

A few weeks before school ended, I found myself overwhelmed with emotion while on campus. Yes, my last child was graduating from AOS, but more than that I could feel the buzz and hum of the village again. Our community, our “village,” is what sets AOS apart, and I was so grateful to be able to feel it all around me once again, after the strain of Covid.

The successful year we had is owed to the time, creativity, and love you continually give back to our school, for which I am forever thankful. You, our volunteers, do everything with meraki (in Greek it means the soul, creativity, or love put into something).

I have been honored to serve as your PTC President this past year and am proud of the phenomenal volunteers that keep our community together, thriving, and strong.

The Sporting Clays tournament was a ton of fun as always and raised $17,000 this year. It was co-chaired by Forrest Andrews and Bill Prout at the Greater Houston Sports Club. Congratulations to Martial Burguieres for taking home the Highest Overall trophy. Again!

The Dads Club also hosted a Father-Daughter outdoor movie night, Father-Son night at a ninja warrior gym, a handful of Dads Night Out happy hours, and revived our breakfast speaker series.

Our fun-filled calendar wouldn’t be possible without the Advancement Office. Thank you very much for handling many of the details behind the scenes and always doing so with a smile.

The AOS Dads Club had an absolute blast this year!

By hosting all of our events again, it’s safe to say the Dads Club is back in full force and is packed with enthusiasm.

This year The Panos Georgiou Memorial Golf Tournament was co-chaired by Robert Charles and Griffin Haby . Despite a rained out first attempt, our rescheduled date brought 21 teams to the links and raised over $37,000. Mark your calendars for December 5, 2022 and start recruiting your foursome. This year’s tournament will be hosted at Braeburn Country Club.

Our BBQ Cookoff this year was co-chaired by Adam Beebe and Jason Orsak . It coincided with the school’s 50th Anniversary Celebration weekend and was a huge success. As usual, the night before brought comradery amongst the cookers and other Dads that turned out for beverages and fellowship. This year our judges panel included local celebrity chefs: Trevor Cook of R-C Ranch, Chef Luis Roger of BCN and MAD, and Chef Patrick Feges and Chef Erin Smith of Feges BBQ. They were most impressed with all the contestants, but I’m proud to say my cook team took home Grand Champion.
