The country’s Northern provinces are the jewel of Laos. From the former royal capital and UNESCO World Heritage Site to remote hill tribes and sweeping vistas, the north of Laos is steeped in history and beauty.
The ancient city of Luang Prabang, former capital of the Lan Xang Empire is renowned for its quiet charm and elegant mix of traditional Lao and French colonial architecture, where cobbled streets and narrow alleys lead to hidden cafes, nestled alongside ancient temples.
Surrounding Laung Prabang are a cornucopia of waterfalls, jungles, artisan villages, rivers, and caves, all waiting to explored to showcase their unique wonders. Explore the surrounding area by electric bike as you silently cruise between attractions, or take a guided tour in our vintage electric cars to accentuate the historical experience.
In Oudomxay you can walk with elephants in the riverside town of Pakbeng, before relaxing in the town’s luxurious resorts. Further north, discover a land of adventure in Nam Kat Yorla Pa, Lao’s premier ecotourism resort. Unwind in the elegant resort or feel the thrill of adrenaline as you traverse the adventure park’s ziplines, canopy walks, and hiking trails.
Trek into the jungle to visit the spectacular Nam Kat Waterfall and wander amongst the giant trees, or head underground and explore the province’s largest cave, the 13 kilometre long Chom Ong Cave.
The country’s northern most province, Phongsaly, is home to remote villages and ancient tea trees. Trek through the mountainous wilderness, or take a boat trip deep into the heart of the jungle. Remote and isolated by towering limestone mountains, Phongsaly is an enigma waiting to be unraveld by intrepid adventurers.
In Luang Namtha, travellers are treated to a host of ecotourism activities. Trekking, kayaking, or mountain biking trips lead to remote villages of small ethnic groups, often living traditional lives, mostly untouched by the modern era.
Spend the night in a village homestay, camp in the forest or stay in the small provincial capital and uncover an authentic part of Laos in a rich cultural melting pot of different ethnicities and beliefs.
In the far west of the north, Bokeo Province is home to the Golden Triangle where the borders of Laos, Thailand and Myanmar meet. Once infamous for opium production and smuggling, this is now a unique tourism destination and the starting point for a two day Mekong cruise to Pakbeng and on to Luang Prabang. The province is also home to the Gibbon Experience, home to soaring ziplines, linking some of the world’s tallest treehouses.
Further south from Bokeo travellers can discover Sayabouly Province, home to the Elephant Conservation Centre. Immerse yourself in the world of wildlife conservation, spending time observing and walking with these gentle giants as domesticated elephants relearn how to be wild in preparation for eventual release into the wild.
To the east of Luang Prabang visitors can explore the province of Xieng Khoung. Spend time on the mysterious, UNESCO listed, Plain of Jars, visit the Provincial Museum, explore ancient forgotten temples, and learn about the ongoing and devastating impacts UXOs. At the right time you can even take part in Hmong New Year, a colourful celebration of a distinct and unique culture.
In the north east of the country lies Huouaphan Province, the birthplace of modern Laos. Visit the Cave City in Viengxay, where communist leaders plotted their revolution while sheltering from near constant bombardment from American planes. Further west you can search for wildlife on the Nam Et Phou Louey Night Safari, a unique boat trip into the heart of the national park.
