We Make Green Work

Sustainability through performance and innovation

We Make Green Work

Manufacturers in composites markets want to lower their environmental footprint without compromising performance or cost. At AOC, we help you do both.

Together, we translate your sustainability ambitions into practical solutions - reducing CO2 emissions (GWP), increasing renewable and recycled content, or improving workshop conditions with low-emission systems.

You set the ambition; together, we make green work.

rPET‑based resins from post‑consumer waste

AOC formulates UPR resins using post‑consumer recycled PET (rPET) from bottle waste. These rPET‑based products deliver on average a ~16% lower CO2 emission (GWP or Global Warming Potential) versus conventional Ortho, DCPD, Iso and Maleic systems, demonstrating the footprint benefit of using recycled feedstocks.

Our portfolio spans major composite processes and applications, including SMC/BMC (thickenable grades), Marine (Lloyd’s approved), Sanitary casting (high filler loading), Pultrusion, CIPP/Relining, Continuous Panel, and Hand lay‑up/Spray‑up. For the full rPET range and product datasheets, see AOC rPET portfolio (link).

Processing rPET into quality resins requires additional manufacturing steps. We take these measures because using recycled content is better for the environment as well as for increasing circularity.

Renewable Value

In order to produce 1 ton of rPET-based formulation we typically require the equivalent of 4,200 PET bottles. This avoids disposal of the rPET into landfill, or using it as fuel in incineration processes.

Low Eco ‑ Footprint with rPET

GWP of rPET formulations is much lower than Ortho, DCPD, Iso, and Maleic equivalents (average -16 %).

To help our customers create composite parts with less environmental impact, we have introduced the NEXT Eco label. With this label we make it easy to select sustainable products from the AOC portfolio, like our rPET-based formulations. ®

External recognition by EcoVadis

AOC is setting high standards in Environmental, Social, and Ethical performance, while actively promoting sustainable products and solutions. The introduction of a full range of rPET based products is a good example of this.

As a recognition for its performance and the company’s demonstrated commitment to Sustainability, AOC EMEA has received again a Gold Rating from EcoVadis in 2023. AOC’s rating was in the top 4 % percentile of chemical companies, which clearly

Reduced CO2 emissions through using bio ‑ circular raw materials

Resins based on bio‑circular raw materials

While availability of raw materials made through bio fermentation processes is still limited, mass‑balance feedstocks are readily available already today. AOC offers resins made with bio-circular styrene and glycols produced from used cooking oil (UCO) via certified mass balance. We receive these raw materials with ISCC+ certification and pass on the certified biogenic/ recycled content in our finished products.

Think of it like green electricity: you can’t trace each molecule, but your purchase commits certified renewable feedstock into the system - helping scale sustainable supply. This approach lets you meet targets without dedicated green‑only production lines and increases renewable content adoption across composites markets and applications.

Please contact your AOC commercial representative to discuss the opportunities for introducing these novel products in your operations.

Carbon Fiber SMC: high performance delivered at industrial scale

Combining unique AOC formulations with carbon fibers into SMC enables the reliable manufacture of components with superior mechanical strength, low density, E coat capability and low part emissions, while maintaining the design flexibility typical for composites. Available AOC products include Daron® 8151 (styrene based) and Daron® 8180 (styrene free).

Making SMC parts with Carbon Fiber

In recent years, novel SMC materials based on carbon fiber have become commercially available and are now applied at full industrial scale to produce ultra light structural parts that outperform their equivalents in aluminum and steel.

AOC has developed a unique Daron® high performance technology for use in SMC that enables chopped CF molded parts with the mechanical performance of

Epoxy Resin CF SMC to be manufactured with the ease of UPR and Vinyl Ester SMC. The combination with excellent flow behavior during molding, means that the resulting mechanical properties of the parts are truly outstanding (Tensile Modulus at 43 GPa, Tensile Strength over 300 MPa).

Scale up for manufacturing

By working closely with its customers throughout the supply chain, AOC has contributed to producing CF SMC cost-effectively on an industrial scale, to be used in the engineering and production of structural interior automotive parts. These combine benefits of great mechanical properties, processing robustness in larger series, cost efficiency, extremely low part emissions, and design freedom. New pilot plant accelerates product innovation

In 2025, AOC opened a brand-new pilot plant in Filago (Italy) to enable faster scaleup and market introduction of innovative resin formulations. This investment significantly reduces time-to-market for new product developments and offers AOC and its customers expanded opportunities for building a sustainable composites business together.

AOC has long been a leader in quality and innovation within the composites industry, with a strong track record of developing value added formulations and applications in close collaboration with customers. With the launch of the new state of the art pilot plant at its

Filago site, AOC further strengthens these capabilities. The advanced equipment and process controls allow operations under reallife manufacturing conditions, while the plant’s versatility makes it suitable for producing a wide range of resin chemistries.

Committed to supporting the European composites industry

The investment in this new pilot plant underlines AOC’s continued commitment to the European composites industry and its readiness to support customers in meeting future challenges. On February 6, 2025, the pilot plant was officially opened during a ceremony led by Stefan Osterwind, Managing Director of AOC EMEA.

As part of the ongoing renovation of the AOC Haverhill production site, AOC has installed 12 new storage tanks manufactured by Plasticon, an AOC customer, using Atlac® Vinyl Ester formulations. These tanks will store resin intermediates and raw materials processed at the Haverhill plant. AOC is proud to rely on its own high performance products and is confident that the tanks will operate reliably for many years.

Following the acquisition of the Haverhill site in 2022, AOC has been implementing major upgrades to its installations and process operations. These renovations include the installation of additional storage tanks for raw materials, intermediates, and finished products; further automation of production processes; construction of new warehouses; and improvements to overall plant infrastructure and layout.

This investment is essential to ensure optimum longterm operation of the Haverhill plant. It also enables AOC to support the anticipated growth of the UK composites market by offering customers the right products and services locally.

Performance and Reliability

Because of the chemical nature of the products manufactured at AOC, the tank materials must

withstand exposure to multiple organic solvents such as styrene. For this reason, AOC selected Atlac® Vinyl Ester formulations, which have a proven track record of more than 60 years in delivering excellent chemical and corrosion resistance. This outstanding material performance ensures longterm tank reliability, operator safety, and strong environmental protection.

To optimize dissipation of static electrical charges, the external surface of each tank is coated with an electrically conductive resin layer. This layer, made from BÜFA’s conductive coatings, also provides enhanced abrasion resistance and improved cleanability. Additionally, for maximum fire safety, the laminate structure incorporates a flameretardant layer based on Atlac® flameretardant resins. A specialized UVprotective coating has been applied on the outside surface to ensure longterm weathering resistance. These composite tanks offer cost levels comparable to stainless steel while delivering significantly better corrosion resistance. Their reduced weight also makes installation considerably easier.

Manufacturing and Installation

The 12 tanks were produced by Plasticon Poland using a combination of filament winding and hand layup processes. After manufacturing, the tanks were transported to the Haverhill site and lifted into position by crane.
