ACADEMY OF ARCHITECTURE & CONFLUENCE 22: Academy Of Architecture (AOA), Mumbai is an institution dedicated to providing quality education and experience to its students. Whether the goal is to learn new skills, launch an independent business, or work within the industry.

Confluence, the pinnacle of the annual week of AOA, provides the students of the Academy an opportunity to come together and show their best projects and ideas at the exhibition.

DESIGN ARCHITECTURE COMMITTEE (DAC): Design Architecture Committee (DAC) is a committee of architecture students interested and passionate about design, architecture, and competition. It is an initiative by the students of the Academy of Architecture to provide support to those who want to participate in various projects, competitions, and workshops and explore the field of architecture. Our main objective is to encourage more participation and support the students taking part in various competitions.

INTRODUCTION “What would you do with an old and empty airplane? Would you tear it down, leave it abandoned, or could you transform it into something new?”

For ages, infrastructure has been an integral part of humanity's development. Every component has a valuable life, which must be repurposed to continue a cycle.

The air transportation industry heavily relies on a large chunk of this infrastructure. Airplanes have proved to humanity how a sector can achieve the unimaginable with remarkable progress.

However, when these airplanes turn non-functional, they become redundant and a piece of junk. Most of these airplanes are not scrapped off appropriately and thus abandoned. Nevertheless, they hold the potential to be turned into meaningful spaces.

OPPORTUNITY For many years there has been a discarded airplane parked in the fields of Khopoli. The Boeing 737 (Flight S2-226) of Air Sahara, which took off from the Mumbai airport runway on October 9, 2005, is now parked in Nishiland Water Park in Khopoli as a tourist attraction. The owners of the Water Park bought the plane for a stunning one crore rupees. After a few minor repairs, the airplane featured air conditioning and a stairwell that climbs up to the upper deck. Following the water park’s bankruptcy, the plane today sits empty with bird nests in its turbine.

CHALLENGE We welcome all to partake in the revitalization of an airplane. The challenge here is to ideate a strategic function that best utilizes the abandoned airplane and justify it in its context. The site is in Khopoli, Maharashtra, a small industrial town near Mumbai. This town also exhibits many tourist spots and resorts for weekend getaways for people living in and near Mumbai.

Participants can choose to deconstruct the physical form of the plan but are expected to stay true to the core idea of the brief. Participants are free to allocate any function/s of their choice to the plane and/or alter its structure with proper justification and intent. The participants are also free to change the site and reimagine the context according to their choice. This change, if done, must be a relevant part in the narrative with proper justification. However, the same model of the aeroplane (Boeing 737-800) must be used as given in the 3D model.

The program can follow a dynamic context that differs between participants however the actual site is strictly restricted to the plane itself and areas specified in the given drawing.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: The entrants must complete the online registrations and the submission must include (but are not limited to) the following required drawings.

Airplane / Site sections illustrating key aspects and major spatial or programmatic elements.

Floor plans to show the interior spatial arrangements and program.

3.

Large-scale drawings showing innovative details or integrated aspects of design.

4.

Elevations demonstrating quality such as material, texture, and color.

5.

All drawings should be presented at a scale appropriate for the design solution and include a graphic scale for reference.

6.

A narrative (MAX 300 words) explaining the intent of the Project, Concept, and Program with a justification of the Function selected.

A single A1 sheet (landscape oriented) must be submitted in .JPEG format (150 DP Resolution), file size not exceeding 20 MB. The sheet must bear your Unique Identification Code, presented clearly in the top right corner on the A1 sheet.

All text must be in English, with a MAXIMUM of 300 WORDS for project explanation with a readable font size (to be provided on the A1 sheet) The narrative must be in a word document and submitted in .DOCX format The sheet must not include ANY INFORMATION (Name, Organization, School, etc.) that may give away your identity.

All dimensions should be in the metric units.

Any other submission other than the format aforementioned would not be accepted.

The submission should be emailed to competitions@aoamumbai.in before 11.59 pm IST, 13 th March 2022.

The subject of the Email should be your UIC. The Email should contain two attachments : (a) JPEG file of the A1 Sheet. (b) Word Document containing the 300 word writeup in .docx format.

(A confirmation email will be sent you after the submission.)

AWARDS & PRIZES: Total 15 Certifications will be given out: Top 3 + 12 Honorable Mentions Cash Prizes worth 50,000 Rs 1 st Prize - 25,000 Rs 2 nd Prize - 15,000 Rs 3 rd Prize - 10,000 Rs Winning entries will be published in AOA’s Annual Yearbook.

All entries will be published in the DAC’S Yearbook.

The entries will also be featured on AOA Mumbai’s website, and on the Instagram platforms of AOA (@aoamumbai) and AOA DAC (@aoa_dac).

All participants will receive team codes from the competition email ID. The code must be mentioned on the right top corner of the submission sheet.

You can participate individually or in a group of a maximum of 3 participants.

All the participants need to email their entries to the Competition email ID (competitions@aoamumbai.in) English is to be used as the language of communication for all drawings.

The deadline for submissions is 11:59 PM IST 13 th March 2022.

Submissions after this deadline will not be considered.

The identity of the participants needs to be anonymous. The registration number is the only form of identification for the entries.

There is no registration fee required for participating in this competition.

The participants should not contact the jury under any circumstances.

All participants must accept the rules and regulations of the competition.

The participants may face disqualification if any of the rules are not abided by.

This competition is open only to citizens of India.
