CREATING COMMUNITY Welcome to the first issue of 2018, which covers all the action at ANZA from the first half of the year and shows the various ways we can come together as a community. One of ANZA's key objectives is to provide our members with opportunities to forge friendships, learn more about life in Jakarta and enjoy all that the city has to offer. We have weekly activities to cater for a range of interests and our Friday Coffee Mornings are an excellent way to meet people in a low-key environment. Our new series of creative workshops have been a great vehicle for learning new skills, having a few laughs and meeting with local artists (p. 16). We particularly also appreciate the wider community support for events like the Spring Market (p. 18)., Easter Egg Hunt (p. 20). and Mothers' Day Brunch (p. 21). These events have helped introduce many new people to ANZA and helped raise funds for ANZA Social Welfare Program. Supporting underpriviledged communities via our Social Welfare Program, is ANZA's other raison d'ĂŞtre. If you are not familiar with the Program we have an over on page 25. We also have updates from a few of our social welfare volunteers. We are currently preparing for our biggest fundraiser of the year, our annual charity ball, which will take place on Friday 21 September. This year's theme ANZA's Night in Wonderland provides plenty of scope for some very unique outfits and we can't wait to see the dancefloor filled with colour. Get your tickets now to be part of the fun! The Ball will be closely followed by the Melbourne Cup Brunch and our Christmas events. Members benefit from discounted tickets to these events and we currently have a special Membership Offer for new joiners. As a volunteer-led organisation, we survive on 'people power' and are always seeking enthusiastic members to help in a number of areas including Front Desk, Social Welfare and Events. Please feel free to speak to myself or any other ANZA volunteers for more details. Jakarta isn't always the easiest city to live in, but I think the trick to thriving here is 'finding your people'. We have an incredible mix of people at ANZA and it is a great starting point for making friends. Join us for coffee on Fridays. Hope to see you there! Emmaleen ANZA President and ANZA Berita Editor

ambassador's message

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Gary Quinlan Hello my name is Gary Quinlan and I am Australia’s new Ambassador to Indonesia. It’s a privilege to lead the Australian Government effort here in Indonesia, which is undoubtedly one of our most important international relationships. As neighbours and two of the largest economies in our region, the Indonesia-Australia relationship has the potential to bring enormous benefits to our people. As a newcomer here, I have been immediately struck by the diversity and dynamism in the Indonesian community. I am keen to explore the country and I hope to soon meet the many Australian and New Zealanders that call this archipelago home, including ANZA members themselves. ANZA has a strong reputation for the quality of its charitable and community projects which continue to transform lives. Unfortunately, my arrival has coincided with a number of terrorist attacks in Surabaya and Pekanbaru, Sumatra. It is vital that Australians in Indonesia remain aware of safety risks and subscribe to Smartraveller.gov.au travel advice to assist them to make informed decisions. I strongly encourage all Australians to subscribe to receive the latest travel advice and security updates and register to make it easier to contact you in an emergency. Over the coming years, there is much potential to deepen the Australia and Indonesia relationship further. The two governments are working hard to conclude a comprehensive economic partnership, called IA-CEPA, which could create jobs for both countries and open up more two-way trade and investment opportunities. Our security and strategic ties remain close and our development partnership ensures Australia contributes to Indonesia’s ambitious agenda to promote growth and reduce poverty. As always though, our partnership will be strengthened the most by Australians and Indonesians getting to know each other better – through business, study and travel and closer people-to-people links. ANZA serves on the frontline in this regard. ANZA members help every day to build closer and deeper relationships with Indonesians across a number of activities and areas. I thank all members for their continued commitment and for helping to forge closer IndonesiaAustralia ties. And I look forward to supporting ANZA's efforts in the years ahead.¿

New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia Dr Trevor Matheson Greetings to all New Zealanders and Australians living in Indonesia. The past couple of weeks have served to remind us that, for all the many delights life in Indonesia offers, there are occasional moments of difficulty that can impact anyone here. With the recent terror attacks in mind, but noting also the bubbling crater of Mount Merapi, I am keen to remind all New Zealanders living in, or travelling to, Indonesia to register on the New Zealand Safetravel website at www.safetravel.govt.nz. Keeping the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade aware of your location in Indonesia can be of enormous assistance to the Embassy if we need to contact you in a consular emergency. 2018 is a particularly important year in the New Zealand-Indonesia relationship, marking 60 years since the formal diplomatic relationship was established. Some of you might have seen our commemorative logo, or participated in one of the events we have held or contributed to in honour of the 60th year (such as • the media logo launch • a New Zealand promotional weekend in Surabaya, or • the Bali cultural event “Indigenous Celebrations” Other events are planned for the remainder of the year. Details, as well as general updates on the New Zealand presence in Indonesia, can be found on the New Zealand Embassy’s Instagram, Twitter and Facebook accounts. We hope to see you during the course of this anniversary year and wish you all health and happiness in the coming months. ¿

Rachel Bayley New ANZA member

Please tell us a little about yourself. I'm Rachel Bayley from Sydney, Australia. I moved to Jakarta in September (2017) wth my husband, Roger. We've got four kids who are still living in Australia. This is our second posting in Asia, we spent three years in Bangkok. How long are you likely to stay in Indonesia? Probably three years. What have been your initial impressions of Jakarta?

Unfortunately, a few of our members will be departing over the summer break, leaving vacancies in the following areas: • Vice President • Event Team: Melbourne Cup Committee, Bazaar Committee If you are interested in joining the team, please talk to one of our friendly Committee Members.¿

It's great. The people are really friendly, there is plenty to do. Although, the traffic takes some getting used to it. What have you enjoyed so far about living in Indonesia? Everyone I have met have been lovely. There have been quite a few public holidays so we have managed a few trips including Bali, Lombok and Gili T. Have you found any favourite places to eat yet? Definitely! We've tried a lot of great places and heard about more but White Elephant at Lippo Mall Kemang is a favourite with delicious, autentic Thai food. We also enjoy Vietnamese from Saigon Delight. What are you first impressions of ANZA community? Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly. There is plenty to do. What would you like to get involved with at ANZA? I've started helping out on the Front Desk and that has been great for meeting people. I'm looking forward to the ANZA Ball and Melbourne Cup, they look like really fun events. ¿

Terima Kasih Banyak Marilyn

In May, we bid a fond farewell to Life Member and one of our longest serving volunteers, Marilyn Ardipradja, as she returns to Australia after almost three decades in Indonesia. There are not enough pages in this magazine to show how much Marilyn has contributed to ANZA and in particular, our Social Welfare Program. Marilyn was part of the team that established the Student Sponsorship Program and in recent years, she has been ANZA project coordinator for Yayasn Goodwill International, helping to provide multi-year scholarships to underprivileged students of high academic standing. She was a familiar face at our pasar murah and helped train a new batch of volunteers in the art of the bargain garage sale. She was also a friendly face welcoming new arrrivals to Jakarta and conducting orientation tours. Marilyn, we are eternally grateful for your dedication, hard work and generosity to ANZA. We wish you all the best for your new phase in life and hope to see you again soon. Âż

ANZA Sponsors' Networking Evening By Hilda Johannsen, ANZA Sponsorship Team

Photos by Rinaldy Chiago

At the beginning of May, the ANZA Mains Committee organised a networking function for our sponsors, volunteers and partners. The evening was an opportunity to thank existing sponsors for their continued support and welcome new partners to the ANZA community. We were very grateful that so many were able to join us. Emmaleen, ANZA President emphasised how important collaboration with our corporate partners is to the ongoing success of ANZA. While Ardva, ANZA Social Welfare Director highlighted some of the social

welfare projects that were helped in the past year and how our joint efforts as a community can have a widespread impact. Many thanks to event sponsors, VIN+ Kemang, who closed their doors for two hours, exclusively for us to mingle and provided some delectable nibbles and wine. They also donated some lovely raffle prizes, which three lucky guests took home. The sign of a good gathering is when guests don't want to leave and many stayed to enjoy a meal and live music. Âż

ANZA Photography Club Outing: Duta Fine Arts Foundation By Emmaleen Murray, ANZA President In March, a small group from the ANZA Photography Club had an outing to local art gallery, the Duta Fine Arts Foundation. It was a gem discovery. From the lush gardens, to the unique art pieces and the beautifully detailed buildings, there was no shortage of inspiration. We took the opportunity to practice our compositional skills. Whether you are a fellow photography buff or an art aficionado, Duta is well worth the visit. It is free to enter and the gardens offer a quiet respite from the busyness of Kemang. We'll visit again soon. ANZA Photography Club is a group of photography enthusiasts of varying skill levels. It is free for ANZA Members to join. We have a private Facebook Group where we can share resources, inspiration and schedule meet-ups and outings.Âż Duta Fine Arts Foundation Jl Kemang Utara, No. 55A www.dutafinearts.com

Early childhood learning experiences set the foundation for lifelong intellectual and emotional development. Given the privilege to be part of this journey, Mighty Minds strives to develop in each child a spirit of discovery, excitement in learning and the ability to express one’s own ideas. Above all else, parental involvement plays a significant and irreplaceable role in our children’s early childhood development. Let us work together side by side as partners to nurture and build within them a strong sense of self, so that they become self-confident and inquisitive learner.

Spring Market 2018 By Emmaleen Murray, ANZA President For many years, ANZA has organised a mid-year bazaar usually in a convention centre or hotel. Last year, due to a busy events calendar, the Committee changed up the format, successfully hosting a smaller market at ANZA House. For 2018 we stayed with the market format, erecting marquees in the front and backyards and inviting a selection of vendors, yayasans and sponsors to participate. This made for an intimate but vibrant event and the house was buzzing with activity. It was great to see so many members and friends dropping in for some shopping and staying for a catch-up. Shoppers were well-fueled thanks to ANZA

Social Welfare Bake Sale, Usni's Cafe and the free coffees from our sponsors Coca-Cola Amatil. It was a great day and we are very grateful for the community support. Special thanks to our event sponsors: Asian Tigers, Colliers, Coca-Cola Amatil, Vie for Living, International SOS, Australian Independent School, and Singapore Intercultural School Bona VistaÂż End of Year Bazaar We will be holding our larger end of bazaar in November. ANZA House was filled with the squeals of excited children for this year's Easter Egg Hunt. Parents and caregivers were able to enjoy some morning tea, including hot cross buns, while the kids were kept occupied with crafts by Mighty Minds Preschool. Unfortunately, the weather turned just before the hunt was due to kick off so it had to be brought indoors. We had an Easter scramble for the Under-4's and a hunt in the library for the older children. Each child received a goody bag of chocolatey treats. Some were extra lucky winning spot and raffle prizes. Thank you to our event sponsors - BEAU JKT by Talita, Ensiklomusika, GummyBox, Strawberry Patch and Mia ChiaÂż

By Lauren Adams, ANZA Marketing & Communications Being a mum in a foreign country can be incredibly overwhelming. We are fortunate at ANZA to have such a supportive community of women, some with older children, some with a handful of little ones, and some first time mothers. In recognition of Australian and New Zealand Mother’s Day, about 50 of us came together on Tuesday 8 May to celebrate this solidarity and honour the special women in our lives. Warung Turki by Turkuaz pulled out all the stops to provide us with a scrumptious Turkish feast. All washed down with tonnes of laughter and maybe a bottle or two of bubbly. An ANZA event wouldn’t be complete without a bunch of amazing raffle prizes. We were definitely spoilt this time around with prizes contributed by Lurik Akik, Spalosophy, Puri Santi Spa in Cipete and Segara Naturals. The day would not have been possible without the ongoing support of our event sponsors, Colliers International, the Australian Independent School and Warung Turki. It was a delightful event and I look forward to our next gathering.¿

At the end of May, we hosted a special Margarita Night at ANZA House to bring our members and friends together before the summer break. With 'moving season' on the horizon, it was also an opportunity to farewell those who will be leaving Jakarta permanently. In particular, we wanted to recognise the contributions of our committee volunteers Kitty Johnston, Vikki Allan, Bonnie Kelly, Reschelle Sullivan and Ann-Maree Thompson and wish them well on their next adventures. The volunteers behind the bar did a great job whipping up frosty concoctions. The crowd were well fed courtesy of D'Biff, who served up their delicious matambre, smoked beef sandwiches and empanadas from their food truck. Another relaxed evening at ANZA House and a great way to step into the mid-year break. Âż

Wrapping Up Another School Year By Louise Kennedy, ANZA Student Sponsorship Co-ordinator

The end of the school year is another busy time for the Student Sponsorship Team, and ANZA volunteers were out and about during May delivering bonuses to graduating students and distributing special stationery gift packs to continuing students. As usual, it has been quite an involved operation, starting with budgeting and buying all the stationery and other items, making up the bonus envelopes, preparing the books, pencils and pens for the students by class and school, loading up cars and journeying out North, South, East and West. As you can see, the children were very excited when we visited and handed out all the goodies! We would like to thank all the kind volunteers

for their help which has made the whole process so smooth and easy this year - we couldn't have managed without all the extra hands. This year, we have been able to help 515 students stay in school by supporting them with their school fees, as well as continuing to help with the nutrition program at Esti Bakti which ensures the neediest students receive at least one good, hot meal a day. We will be taking on new students when the new school year starts in July so if you are interested in becoming a sponsor and would like to find out more about the program, please email us on studentsponsorship@anzajakarta.comÂż

Big Hugs at Yayasan Sayap Ibu by Vikki Allan, ANZA Member

Photos by Kitty Johnston

Today, was full of mixed emotions as I said farewell to the beautiful children and lovely staff at Yayasan Sayap Ibu (Cirendeu). For the last few years I have spent many Tuesday mornings with a group of children from Yayasan Sayap Ibu, as part of ANZA Orphans Playgroup. The Playgroup involves volunteers like myself collecting the children (accompanied by their carers) from the orphanage on a Tuesday and bringing them to ANZA House for a few hours of play. The kids have so much fun scooting around ANZA House on the toy cars and playing with all the colourful toys in the playroom. On occasion we have arranged special outings to places like the Playground in Kemang.

Cuddles with Mellie 2016

It's not only about bringing some joy to these little ones for a few hours each week. Over the years, our interactions have also led to volunteers identifying other areas in which ANZA can help YSI. For example, providing clothing, toys or help finding specialists for some of the children with specific medical requirements. It has been a highlight of my week to spend time with these gorgeous souls and I hope that some new volunteers will step-up to continue to support Yayasan Sayap Ibu, you won't regret it.Âż Interested in volunteering with ANZA Social Welfare? Whether on a regular or adhoc basis, we are always looking for extra helpers. Contact socialwelfare@anzajakarta.com or come to ANZA House to learn more.

Seriously, Ad LET’ S PLAY Full

It’s becoming a scene that we’re all very much familiar with. Small kids, big backpacks. Young learners, even younger readers. Rising stress level in the younger students. True, we also have young professors and child geniuses among us. But, at what cost? In making little prodigies, we have been sacrificing the most crucial element in a child’s early life : playtime.

Playtime is an essential part of a child’s growth and development. In fact, play is so important in a child development that it’s been recognized by the United Nations High Commission for Human Rights as a right of every child. As a school, Australian Independent School (AIS) firmly believes and advocates an education style that prioritizes the wellbeing of a child in every aspect, including social, emotional, and academic success. To achieve this balance, AIS implements a teaching philosophy that fosters and takes account of a child’s stage of development, starting from age 3 to Senior Secondary.

The true success of each child lies within the support system that he or she receives. AIS provides the necessary environment and tools which motivate students in their personal exploration, experiment and experience instead of constant academics drills or strict classes. We encourage creative play, social interactions, imagination, original thinking and emotional competence; All of which have proven to be an important factor in determining overall academic success. To simply put it, at AIS, we play for serious benefits. So today, for the brilliant minds of tomorrow, do a simple AIS act : LET’S PLAY.

Enjoying the views from the train

TRAIN ADVENTURE TO BANDUNG By Michelle McCarthy, ANZA Sponsorship Team Volunteer Looking for an easy weekend getaway with the family? An adventurous group of ANZA families took a train to the West Java capital, Bandung. In the five years, I have been living here this is my first trip to Bandung. It is only 150km from Jakarta, but having heard all the nightmare traffic stories, we decided to take the train. Plus, we thought the kids would enjoy the adventure! Booking train tickets is straightforward through local travel websites, where you can select your seats and pay online or at an Indomaret. You will need the passenger names and ID, which they DO check at the train station! The train leaves from Gambir Station near Monas. You can print your tickets at the self serve kiosks, grab a Starbucks and off you go. We went by Executive class (around 120K, per ticket) but heard there’s a Priority class on some trains making it uber luxurious! Those tickets are currently 250K to Bandung. The journey took about 3hours and it was a really enjoyable experience with nice views of paddy fields and lush greenery on the way. Getting around Bandung is very easy with the Bluebird and Go-Jek apps available. Or try an angkot - the local minivan - if you can find one! Traveling tip – we went during Ramadan and the traffic was pretty much non-existent! Note to self – plan more domestic trips during Ramadan! We decided to stay at the Hilton Bandung near the train station. Yes it is a walkable distance, but as with Jakarta, the sidewalks are laden with obstacles and as we learned, not so ideal for strollers or rolling baggage. Beyond being impressive looking, and good value,

the most important feature for this family of 5 – they have 52sqm premium rooms that include two queen beds, and were quite happy to fit a baby cot and an additional rollaway bed (for a fee). Kids under 5 stay and breakfast for free! Not to mention, they have a nice playroom, near the pool and dining areas, so it was easy to supervise the kids. While in town, we visited Rumah Mode factory outlet (highly rated on TripAdvisor.com and we can see why). The range and quality of products was much better than any factory outlet we have found in Jakarta. The lush fitting rooms made the experience very much like visiting a US factory outlet. With restaurants all around and plenty of bargains to be had, you could conceivably do a day trip just to this outlet mall - shop, eat and get back on the train! If one outlet is not enough, walk up the road and you will find a few more outlet shops! We also visited Saung Angklung Udjo – a cultural site dedicated to the Angklung bamboo instrument and music. Unfortunately, the scheduled show was not running (note to self, always call to check), but they were nice enough to give us a short tour of the angklung workshop and even let us try our hands at playing the angklung orchestra style! Overall, it was a fantastic weekend away. I’ll be back – maybe without kids next time, so I can get more shopping done.¿

ANZAC Day 2018: Lest We Forget By Silena Griffin, ANZA Member 103 years ago, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps fought together to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula from the Turkish defenders. The campaign became a stalemate but continued for eight months with heavy casualties on both sides. ANZAC Day marks the anniversary of this first campaign and every year on April 25th, Australians and New Zealanders around the world commemorate those who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Here in Jakarta, at the half light of dawn, on the steps of the Commonwealth War Memorial the 103rd

ANZAC Dawn Service began with a As is tradition, representatives from the various Australian and New Zealand community in Jakarta, including ANZA, laid wreaths in honour of the occasion. The service was followed by a Gunfire Breakfast, which included ANZAC Biscuits and a ‘Gunfire’ drink (coffee with a dash of rum). On the evening of April 26th a reception was held and many guests enjoyed learning more about the two countries' Defence Forces and experienced the warm ANZAC spirit.¿

BABYCCINO by Lauren Adams, ANZA Marketing & Communications

We’ve all experienced that moment at some point when we vow never to take the baby out to a café again. After all, noone enjoys themselves between half eaten meals and cold coffees. Particularly for those who have recently moved to Jakarta, the thought of socialising with a baby in tow can become quite intimidating. However, times are changing and luckily here in Jakarta a wave of new kid-friendly cafes are cropping up. Here are five baby-friendly cafes that both you and your little one will love:

Buba & Bump

Jl. Ciranjang, Senopati Technically not in itself a café, but serviced by the Farmers Bowl next door, this store selling a curated selection of children’s toys, clothing and other necessities is a great spot to spend some time with your little one. With two separate play areas – a soft play area for the babies, and another area for the toddlers with slide set and climber. Nursing room Children’s development classes Pre-natal classes

Brood-en-Boter

Jl. Bangka Raya, Bangka With a focus on simple Indonesian cooking, some western favourites and baked goods, it’s a great place for a light meal or coffee with friends. The café has a small, enclosed children’s play area, best suited to younger children. Nursing and changing room Children’s development classes Brood-en-Boter

Mamain

Jl. Gunawarman, Senopati Small café, with a quaint little playground, especially tailored for younger children with super friendly and engaging staff. There is a selection of quality toys as well as a small wooden playset and slide, with plenty of little nooks and crannies for the little ones to explore. A small menu, mostly pasta and some local favourites, and good selection of drinks and coffee. The main downside is that the café is located up a flight of stairs so travel light when coming here! Nursing and changing room Children’s development classes

Creating a Greener Jakarta by Lisa Hartmann, ANZA Member

Photos by Silena Griffin, ANZA Member

Arriving in Jakarta will make you shake your head at least twice, confronted with the volume of traffic and the level of trash dumped at the streets. Whereas one will soon figure out tricks to avoid traffic, tackling he huge problem of waste disposal doesn't seem to get the awareness necessary to tackle the issue. Our May ExtravagANZA coffee morning aimed to give some practical tips by highlighting 'Jakarta Green Initiatives'. A diverse set of local organisations and vendors presented information and products for 'greener living' in Jakarta. The event kicked off with speakers from the XS Project and the online community Going Green in Jakarta. On site was a small bazaar, where the XS Project demonstrated that through upcycling waste can be developed into something truly amazing, showing off their sets of bags and totes. Online delivery service Sayurbox brought the finest fruits and vegetables to give a glimpse of their product range ready to be delivered to your home anytime. Finally, Les Bulettes displayed colourful patterned alternatives to paper towels, disposable napkins and cling film, just to mention a small sample of their wide product range. The XS Project The problem of waste in Jakarta is far more diverse than one can imagine, as the system in place is not working thoroughly. Therefore, does the Jakarta government also rely on private companies in that sector as well as scavengers in order to tackle that issue. The problem is that people like the waste pickers and their families do not have a steady income in order to cover rent or send their kids to school.

Generations of waste pickers grow up on dumpsites without education and without insurance. At that point the XSProject steps in. By selling their bags and totes made of packing material of laundry detergent, shower gel and even used event banners, they collect money to support those families. They also buy these kinds of waste from the scavengers in order to give them an incentive to collect this kind of trash. In addition, explained Ibu Retno Hapsari, they are able to support 85 kids to receive a proper education, even 7 of them already made it to college, also healthcare and immunisation is provided by the XSproject, she added. In most developed countries waste management is an integral part of the peoples everyday life. People are used to separating their waste in up to 5 different trash bins and the government does not rely on an informal system to pick up that trash. Therefore, the question might arise what happens with all the trash leaving the houses in Jakarta every day? Going Green in Jakarta Community There are people in Jakarta, who definitely ask themselves that exact same question. As a result the Going Green in Jakarta Community, a Facebook group was born with more than 500 members joining in the first few months. The group is open to the public and is a platform to discuss topics such as reducing waste at home; avoiding waste while travelling and providing tips towards a zero waste

lifestyle. Victoria Forsgate, ANZA Member and one of the Going Green in Jakarta Coordinators presented some confronting statistics on waste. She emphasised that although the problem can seem overwhelming, if each person starts to make small changes, they can have a culmulative impact. Going Green in Jakarta exists for people to share information for individulals and households. The group is also encouraging members to use their power as consumers and encourage businesses to use less plastic. Living Zero Waste Our final speaker for the monring was Susan Poku, an active member of the Going Green in Jakarta Community and an advocate of the zero waste movement. Susan shared how the documentary film, 'A Plastic Ocean' opened her eyes to the 'plastic issue' and inspired her to start her zero waste journey three months ago. Some may be sceptical that achieving an zero waste lifestyle in Jakarta is an impossible challenge. However, Susan explained how it can be achieved by following the Five R’s: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle and rot. Some suggestions for living greener: • Refuse single-use plastics in the supermarket by bringing own reusable produce and shopping bags. • Shop consciously by avoiding products wrapped

37

in pointless plastic for example cherry tomatoes. Carry a small travel kit to have reusable coffee cup, water bottle, cutlery and straws. These replace unnecessary plastic when dining out. • There is even a way to make money out of your waste in Jakarta. Susan gave insights on how to recycle household trash using Bank Sampah. • Susan shared her experience with composting and it is not the epicentre of unwelcome visitors in the garden as some might argue. In conclusion, everyone is advised to reflect on their own behaviour in order to fight the negative effects of waste on the environment, on the oceans and, as a consequence, on us and our children. ¿ •

aroundthedurian - book review

FRIENDSHIP BOOK "MY WORLD" CONCEPT BY DAPHNE VERNOOIJ & INGE KLEEMANS ILLUSTRATIONS BY CAROLINE VAN PELT Reviewed by Emmaleen Murray

It is moving season within the expat community and adults and kids alike are saying farewell to friends. My children are too young to use social media to keep in touch with their friends, so when I was shown Friendship Book My World I thought it was an excellent way to preserve memories on their behalf. The journal is a collaboration between Daphne Vernooij and Inge Kleemans, two expat mums in Malaysia. They have really taken into consideration the nature of expat friendships creating profile pages that capture information of young global citizens. Each profile includes prompts lilke favourite foods and how the friends met. There are spaces for photos and for the children to share more about their families and culture. The watercolour illustrations by Dutch illustrator, Caroline van Pelt are delightful and the characters on the cover represent a different region of the world. The book would make a lovely farewell gift and in my opinion would be best suited to children over the age of 5. ¿ For more information about price and availability visit: Facebook.com/friendshipbookmyworld/

THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW ARE NOT BORN, THEY ARE MADE At TUTOR TIME, we continually review and update our curriculum that meets children aged 6 months to 6 years old’s needs, according to the latest educational research. Our teachers use it as a starting point to adapt the lessons to suit each child’s interest. By varying the lessons, children learn there are multiple ways to accomplish a goal, so when our children are stuck with something they have never encountered before, they choose to THINK instead of REMEMBER.
