WELCOME TO OUR SUMMER ISSUE I hope you are feeling rested after the holidays. My family and I stayed in Jakarta for the summer, exploring more of the city while it was relatively quiet. We had a lot of fun mini-adventures, including a trip to the new aquarium (p32).

The last few months have been packed with public holidays and many of our members have taken some exciting adventures around Indonesia and abroad.

In between long weekends and the Idul Fitri break, ANZA has hosted a number of exciting events, including our first Twilight Market (p 10) and a ripper Bogan Bingo Night (p14). The remainder of the year will be a particularly busy period at ANZA, with most of our major events taking place.

First on the calendar is the Annual Charity Ball on Saturday 30 September. The Ball Committee have been hard at work with event planning but found some time to pull together a helpful costume shopping guide for this year's theme, check it out on pages 16 and 17.

ANZA Ball is not only a great night out, but an important part of fundraising efforts for our Social Welfare Program. This issue, we have some stellar examples of how funds are put to use in the community. From large-scale projects like construction at At Taqwa School (p18 ) to regular contributions made at smaller projects like the Pusakas (p24). Every rupiah counts and can make a difference to many, many lives. So grab some friends and get your ball tickets at ANZA House.

Finally, I would love to hear from members about their recent adventures. Whether it was an exciting trip overseas or a local restaurant you want to recommend, I am always looking for new contributors. If you're not confident about writing, not to worry, I am here to help. You'll find me at Friday Coffee Morning, so let's have a chat.

Hello members, patrons, sponsors and friends of ANZA Wow! 2017 is slipping away fast and we are now getting to the pointy end of the year. The first half of the year was filled with fun, exciting and revamped events.

Message from the President Tania Goodacre

We held a very successful Sponsors' Evening at the New Zealand Embassy, hosted by our New Zealand Ambassador, Dr Trevor Matheson and his lovely wife, Nuannit. Thank you for your support and gracious hospitality.

Our Mothers' Day Brunch at Salt Grill was a lot of fun, our Twilight Market was exciting and had a real community feel about it and who could forget our Bogan Bingo Night filled with mullets, activewear and flannel. A huge thank you to our event coordinators and volunteers for putting on some truly amazing events.

Our Annual Charity Ball is just around the corner and with the theme of 'Prohibition Ends Here' it will be a glittery event and a roaring good time. Tickets are on sale now and tables are selling fast.

Also coming up in November, we will be holding our Christmas Bazaar and of course the Melbourne Cup Charity Brunch, so start getting your fascinators ready, as the fashions on the field will be a competitive one this year.

We still have a number of vacant volunteer roles to fill. Our most urgent need is for a Graphic Designer, if any of you out there want to help out with this please come and see me. It's a great way to get involved but still have your own time.

We are also in need of people who can share the roles of Event Management, Accounting, Sponsorship and Front Desk. If you have any of these skills and can spare 2-4 hours a week, please contact any of the committee members, it is a great way to meet new people.

My husband, two daughters and I arrived in Jakarta in January this year.

What were your first impressions of Jakarta? Jakarta is a very busy, bustling but friendly place.

Any advice for a new arrival? Be ready to adapt and embrace the different way of life here.

Can you recommend a must do activity in Indonesia? Visit Komodo National Park. I recently took a trip there with friends and had an amazing time. I'll be sharing my experience in the next issue of ANZA Berita, so keep an eye out for that.

How did you find out about ANZA? Colliers brought me to ANZA House for a "look-see"

I have tried most activities, but the golf group has been a great way to get around and out of the city and keep active. Friday coffee mornings have proved invaluable for getting tips from other members.

What is your most memorable event you have attended and why? My entire family attended the opening of At Taqwa new school buildings with Social Welfare. It was a fantastic day and really eye-opening as to the impact we can have during our tenure here in Indonesia.

In one word describe living in Jakarta. Colourful Do you have a favourite restaurant or cafe yetl? Brunch at Il Mare at the Mulia Hotel. Scrumptious!

ANZA TWILIGHT MARKET

May 2017 saw the very first ANZA Twilight Market and it was a huge hit with punters and vendors alike. This year our committee wanted to shake things up a little and change up our regular bazaar. We all love the open-air markets seen so often in Australia and New Zealand and we wanted to recreate them, right here in Jakarta!

ANZA House was open to all, with our front garden providing a laidback setting for a delicious meal from Salt Grill, Pie Haus, or Tasty Homemade to name a few. It was a great place to relax with a bevy and boogie on down with our great live music provided by The Rembrants.

Across the road, Alexandra’s was the perfect venue to showcase our vendors with its beautiful architecture and Balinese style gardens.

We had over 50 vendors selling beautiful handmade crafts, jewellery, home wares, paintings, and even rugs.

As always, we were overwhelmed by the generosity of our patrons, sponsors, and vendors for their donations to both our regular raffle and our new kiddies raffle!

We received so much positive feedback that we hope to recreate this relaxed style market again soon and make the most of ANZA House.

Mother's Day picnic brunch

by Emmaleen Murray Since my kids are still very young, they don't understand the significance of Mother's Day yet.

Making cards (under my husband's direction) was the extent of their involvement this year.

Not that I mind, because it means I have free range on how I celebrate (credit card limit allowing).

One of my gifts this year was attending the ANZA Mother's Day Picnic Brunch at Salt Grill

by Luke Mangan. Being able to visit one of my favourite restaurants, with friends on a "work

day" was such a treat.

The food was delectable and paired well with a few celebratory glasses of bubbles.

The brunch is not exclusive to mums. Daughters, sisters, aunts, all attended to honour the mothers in their lives.

Thank you to our main event sponsors, Salt Grill and International SOS for their support. It was a fabulous morning and I look forward to next year's edition.

Friday 16 June was an absolute beaut of a night for our latest edition of Bogan Bingo.

Our caller "Kaylene" was the perfect sheila for keeping all the players in order with some saucy one liners There were a couple of hotly contested rounds, which required tie-breakers. As a result, punters were treated to some bonza entertainment including a lively Limbo Contest and an epic Air Guitar Battle.

Top tip: If you see something you like, that fits, buy it! It may not be there the next day.

Sizing differs from site-to-site and store-to-store and pictures don't always reflect a garment's true fit. If you lean towards a large size then you have the possibility of getting an item adjusted.

AT TAQWA BUILDING PROJECT OFFICIAL OPENING CELEBRATION

At Taqwa elementary school is located in Cakung, East Jakarta. There are about 320 students in this school ranging from Year 1 to Year 6 and three classes of pre-school.

ANZA Social Welfare, through our Student Sponsorship Program (SSP) supports 120 students with their school fees with help from various corporate and individual sponsors.

These students are from needy families and are at risk of not attending school due to financial pressure at home. ANZA also supports the school with a monthly contribution for teachers’ salaries.

Given our active involvement with the school, we were very concerned when we discovered the school’s original wooden structure built in the mid 1970’s was very unsafe for students and teachers. We recruited architecture and engineering technical expertise from volunteer ANZA members to assess the building and support with the design and construction of a new building. This initiative consisted

of the demolition of the previous unsafe classroom building, construction of a new 2-storey building with 6 classrooms and the renovation and repair of an existing building with 8 classrooms.

The project cost IDR1.1billion and was ANZA’s largest project to date. After a year of planning and fund-raising, we secured generous commitments from the Australian Embassy Direct Aid Program, New Zealand Head of Embassy Fund, Ricardo and Amelia Handoko, Telkomtelstra, Priscilla Hall Memorial Foundation and Semen Merah Putih.

Construction was completed on schedule and both buildings were handed over to the school in January 2017.

The school organised a great opening ceremony on March 4 2017 to meet and thank ANZA and sponsors of the project.

Our thanks once more to everyone involved in this very successful building project. ¿

STUDENT SPONSORSHIP END OF YEAR BONUSES with Louise Kennedy, ANZA Student Sponsorship Coordinator

As part of the ANZA Student Sponsorship Program (SSP), we aim to provide our SSP students with a year-end/Lebaran gift. This is the second year we have been able to extend gifts to ALL students at our partner schools. Each student received a gift pack of stationery items and treats.

We also had a few SSP students graduating from their respective school levels and they received a cash bonus.

Recognising these milestones is an important part of ANZA SSP. Many poor families in Indonesia stop sending their children to school because they cannot afford to pay for

books, school uniform and stationery but for a surprisingly small sum per child we can help families keep their children at school for longer.

We also try to arrange much needed supplies and equipment for the schools themselves. This is possible due to the generosity of our corporate and individual donors.

Preparing gift packs for students across 22 schools requires a fair bit of team work. Thank you to all the volunteers who pitched-in at various stages of the process - sorting, packing and presenting the bonuses to the students. Âż

Earlier this year ANZA was introduced to the House of Grace Foundation and have been following their work on establishing a safe house here in Jakarta for survivors of sexual exploitation.

Lima Hansen from the House of Grace explains more about the foundation's work.

It is estimated that 100,000 children and women are trafficked in Indonesia each year with the majority ending up in sexual exploitation and forced prostitution.1 Yayasan Rumah Kasih Karunia - The House of Grace Foundation was established in 2015 with a vision “To transform the lives of sexually exploited woman through restoration and reintegration�.

The Foundation takes in survivors of sexual exploitation and provides them with counselling and lifeskills training within the nurturing and protected environment of their safe house, the House of Grace 1

Reintegration The House of Grace is a place of restoration where we provide counseling and basic life skills done in a nurturing environment. Our team works with the survivors by instilling worth back into them and teaching them what their true value is.

Through a holistic approach, the House of Grace will serve our residents through a 12 month programme. While girls as young as 5 years of age are sold by their family members, the average age is 12-14 years old. To ensure our Yayasan has residents that can give their own legal authority to join us, our target age is 17 to 25 years of age.

Business Think Tank To enable our Yayasan to be self-funded in the future, support the residents of the House of Grace to gain employment skills and develop new career opportunities, we held a ‘Think-Tank’ with supportive local business owners. We generated a number of ideas for enterprises we could operate. After lots of discussion, research and offers of support, we decided on launching a quality secondhand items thrift store under the name ‘re.store’, which is now operating in BSD City and selling online through various platforms. re.store launch Generous individuals, families and businesses have donated office supplies, kitchen equipment, bedroom and lounge furniture, as well as a range of quality clothing and sporting items. This supports our vision in two ways: 1. enabling the survivors of sexual exploitation to earn money in a supportive environment while living in our safe house and 2. providing a fast-moving environment within which the women can learn skills ranging from freight, to retail & marketing, inventory to packaging and dispatch.

Did you know that the victims of sexual exploitation view themselves as being of no value, having no worth, no hope, no future and no way out? Sexually exploited women on average, are bought for US$27 and put to work in the sex industry and may serve 60 or more men a day. Often they receive no money, health care or safety. The House of Grace residents receive counselling, health care and fullypaid vocational training & employment in a way that will empower them to live outside their previous expectations, limitations that were forced upon them by others.

Gala Night In October 2016 we officially launched our Yayasan and its mission to the wider community in our very first gala dinner. With over 150 people in attendance, including members of the Governor’s office, businesses, community organisations, fellow Yayasans and NGOs. It was a highclass night with delicious food from restaurant Seribu Rasa in Gandaria Mall and entertainment by Lala Karmela, Calvin Jeremy, Asti Asha, Rick Karnadi and Maruli Tampubolon.

With the financial support of the attendees, family and friends, we began renovations on the House of Grace venue in preparation for our residents arrival in March 2017.

Renovating and opening the House of Grace It has been quite a journey as we have renovated the safe house. We have accommodation for 8 residents and capacity for 12. On March 2017 our first girls joined us. Each resident has their own bed, clothes drawers and lockable cupboard. With a comfortable lounge, secure backyard and CCTV, the House is a welcoming and nurturing environment with a dedicated House Mum that manages the day-to-day routines and encourages the sense of family.

A VOLUNTEER'S PERSPECTIVE VISITING PUSAKAS

by Joscelyn McBain, ANZA Member ANZA supports four Pusakas in Jakarta, a place where cooked meals are provided to elderly people in need. When the opportunity arose to take ANZA’s monthly contribution to each location, my hand shot up. I was interested in seeing life from the inside of a kampung and meeting some of the oldies.

To soothe my anxiety about communication with my limited Bahasa Indonesia, the lovely (and fluent) Sylvia offered to accompany me.

So off we went!

The benefits of supporting the Pusaka were immediately obvious.

Sylvia and I were greeted by lots of (mainly) elderly ladies wanting to shake our hands and say hello, as they waited in orderly lines to fill their “tiffin” tins. We met with the heads of each Pusaka, who would shoot the breeze and tell us about their communities’ needs - food, sheets, mattresses, umbrellas, computers, wheelchairs and walking sticks - only some of which ANZA is able to provide.

Naturally, our chats were in Bahasa - leaving me catching every tenth word. Any request to slow down had the effect of one or two sentences delivered at a marginally slower rate, followed by the speaker ramping up to seemingly worse-than-before velocity.

However, smiling and nodding on my part, seemed to keep

everyone happy enough. Sylvia helped fill in the blanks when we were back in the car.

We met an 80-something house-bound lady enjoying a new mattress provided by ANZA in her home. We saw a fasting 78-year old Pusaka Coordinator delightfully accept a walking stick, which seemed to help her avoid fainting clear away while we were there.

We said “Halo” to hundreds of kids and adults alike, lining the tiny streets of the kampung enjoying daily life as we passed by.

It is heartening to know the elderly in these communities are being cared for by the Pusakas and that ANZA is able to help. To connect more closely to the people in the kampungs and gain insight into their community was such a humbling experience. ¿

Yogyakarta with Catherine Anderson, ANZA Membership Co-ordinator With a long run of public holidays in recent months, quite a few members have spent long weekends in Yogyakarta (aka Jogja). Catherine Anderson, ANZA Membership Co-ordinator, shared some highlights from her first visit to this cultural hub.

When did you go and for how long?

I have been to Jogja twice in the last few months. My first (ever) trip was with friends and we took the train from Jakarta's Gambir Station. It's a very scenic eight-hour journey. We booked seats in an Executive cabin which was comfortable and clean.

Alternatively, a number of airlines fly direct and it only takes about 1hour 10minutes, perfect for a short getaway.

Where did you stay?

My first stay was at Joglo House Syariah - an authentic Javanese house with modern amenities. The second time, I had a terrible experience with an AirBnB property. Luckily, it was a very brief stay. There are plenty of accommodation options available in Jogja, with most of the hotel chains located near Jalan Prawirotaman or Jalan Malioboro.

What was one of your favourite experiences during your trip?

Definitely, visiting Borobudur at sunrise. A majestic temple with amazing statues, panels and stunning vistas.

Jogja's climate is a lot fresher than Jakarta but an early start means scaling the many stairs before it gets too hot. It doesn't guarantee a prime position for photographing the sunrise, as it is a very popular tourist attraction.

I recommend hiring a guide because it is such a historically interesting site. There are guides available at the ticket office, but make sure you chat to them first so you find one that you can understand.

What was something that surprised you about Jogja?

I didn't expect to see so many horse and carts around town.

Can you recommend a dish or restaurant to try while there?

ViaVia was a top find. The food was amazing and they also offer tours and accommodation. I think next time I would stay there as they have everything you need and are conveniently located on Jalan Prawirotaman, with lots of other great restaurants close by.

Jejamuran has an interesting concept, getting creative with their core ingredient - mushrooms.

For dessert, if you don't mind waiting in a long line, then Tempo Gelato was serving up some delicious ice cream flavours.

Do you have any tips for others planning a visit to Jogja?

I have the details for a fantastic driver, who will get you around to the different cultural sights and shopping. Jalan Malioboro is great for souvenirs but beware the scams. Head to Gabusan Art Market for handicrafts but it is huge so allocate plenty of time. Âż

Bright Lights of Bangkok with Kaeli Etheridge, ANZA Vice-President The Thai capital is one of the most visited cities in the world and for her first visit, Kaeli discovered why the city is so appealing.

Tell us a little about your trip.

What was one of your favourite experiences during your trip?

The Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha temple were pretty spectacular. Thailand’s temples are so ornate and well looked after.

I also really enjoyed exploring China Town and taking in the sights and sounds there.

Darren and I spent a fun-filled four days in Bangkok at the beginning of June. We caught up with friends who live there. It's relatively close, What was something that surprised you about the city? with a three hour direct flight from Jakarta.

The public transport system! I was pleasantly surprised about how easy, fast, and inexpensive it was.

Where did you stay? Would you recommend staying there?

We stayed in an area called Silom. It was an awesome location as we were close to the MRT and Subway, which made getting around a breeze.

Can you recommend a dish or restaurant to try while there?

There were also plenty of bars and restaurants around, as well as plenty of street food! I’d definitely recommend staying there, it’s a little bit away from the backpacker area but still nice and close to plenty of temples. It’s a good mix.

Do you have any tips for others planning a visit to Bangkok?

The roast pork at any of the street food vendors in China Town was amazing! I think I ate it about four times!

Definitely head up to the Chatuchak Markets, they are huge and the quality of artwork and handicrafts is amazing! Next time I go, I’m taking an extra suitcase! ¿

JAKARTA AQUARIUM 'FINDING DORY' AND FRIENDS

by Emmaleen Murray In preparation for spending the entire school holidays in Jakarta, I made a list of little adventures in the city suitable for toddlers in tow. One place recommended by a few friends was the new Jakarta Aquarium, which opened earlier this year.

First impressions from the website were very positive and so on the Thursday following Lebaran, our family of four ventured out. Thanks to quiet Jakarta roads it only took twenty minutes from Kemang (Google estimates a 40minute journey on a 'normal morning').

We spotted a giant floating penguin from the road and correctly assumed that was the entrance to the building.

Admission rates vary between weekdays and weekends and public holidays. You can also pay extra for premium tickets which allows entry to the 5D Theater, which according to the website simulates a ride in a submarine. Children two years old and under are free.

My kids have never been to an aquarium, so were a little apprehensive about entering the dark cave-like entranceway. But their nerves were replaced with pure excitement, when they saw the first display of 'Dory' fish (scientific name Paracanthurus hepatus or Regal Blue Tang).

Exclamations of "Look there is Dory!" can be heard throughout the aqaurium as they feature in many of the tanks. In fact, I'm sure if you made a list of your favourite movie sea creatures, you will find

them either in real life or in toy form at the gift shop, which everyone has to go through to exit the aquarium. That character association definitely kept my kids entertained during our visit as they looked out for their favourites in each of the tanks. The main tank has a wide variety of species and two observation points. Firstly, you can observe the fish from above via glass floors in the upper level and subsequently the Southern Sea Gallery where a live performance involving mermaids also takes place.

There is an educational element to the aquarium and each area has digital screens, which provide information about the different species on display, both in Bahasa Indonesia and English.

It did get quite crowded around some of the displays and there was a very long wait for the live performance and 5D Theater at the very end. We stayed for three hours and saw 60% percent of the displays before exhaustion and hunger set in. But those problems are easily remedied, when the venue is located in the basement of a large mall.

Virgin Colada This super simple smoothie version of the famous Puerto Rican cocktail is a great way to make use of the Nanas muda (young pineapple), which are currently in season.

Ingredients: 2 cups of fresh pineapple (peeled and chopped) 1 ripe banana 4 to 6 ice cubes 100ml coconut cream 100ml coconut water Steps: 1. Place pineapple in a blender and blend to a smooth puree 2. Add the rest of your ingredients and blend until smooth and evenly mixed 3. Pour into glasses and serve immediately with a garnish of pineapple or mint.

The ripe banana adds a sweetness to the drink but you could add some sugar or honey for additional sweetness.

Watermelon Mojito Mocktail Refreshing, sweet watermelon with the zestiness of lime and the zing of ginger will titillate the taste buds.

Ingredients: (makes approximately two glasses) 3 cups of fresh watermelon (cubed) Juice of 2 limes Sparkling water Ginger Ale Mint leaves Ice cubes

Steps: 1. Place watermelon and lime juice in blender and process until smooth.

2. In bottom of two glasses muddle 2 mint leaves 3. Add watermelon puree to glasses, until about half full 4. Add ice, a splash of ginger ale and top with sparkling water.

5. Stir to combine 6. Garnish with mint and watermelon if desired

UNDERSTANDING ESSENTIALS WITH EUCA L IE ORGA N IC

ANZA recently hosted an Essential Oils Workshop, led by Imelda Hartono, Co-Owner and Managing Director of Eucalie Organic. As well as making ANZA House smell amazing, the participants learnt about the many benefits of essential oils and how to effectively use them. I spoke with Imelda to get a more indepth understanding of essentail oils and Eucalie.

Tell us a little about yourself and the origins of your business.

My background is in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from UC Berkeley. After more than 10 years of researching and learning about organic ingredients and essential oil, I’ve learned about which ingredients are safe and effective and their impact to our health.

When I came back to Indonesia, I couldn’t find any natural products that were effective, safe, honest and reasonably priced. There were many natural and organic mainstream brands that contained misleading information.

At first, I decided to make my own products for personal and family use. Over time, there was growing demand from friends and family members who had experienced healing from using these products.

Eucalie was started with a mission to provide the highest quality, non-toxic organic and all natural products, because I believe that what we inhale or apply to our skin will be absorbed into our body.

Today, Eucalie has grown to a team of ten staff and offers several product lines that include pure essential oils, skin care, bath and body care, as well as natural remedies.

What is the meaning behind your brand name?

Eucalie comes from the word ‘Eucalyptus’, which is a plant with many healing benefits, such as reducing stress, improving breathing, relieving anxiety, and so on. By using our products, we hope that people will also experience many healing benefits for their body and their mind.

What exactly are essentail oils?

Essential oils represent the very essence of aroma of specific plants. Essential oil are extracted from different parts of plants, such as from the roots, stems, flowers, barks, etc, through distillation or expression processes.

At Eucalie, all of our essential oils are 100% Pure, without addition of chemical substance, fragrance or carrier oil.

Are all essentials safe?

Most essential oils are safe when used properly. For skin applications, that usually means concentrations no higher than 5%. For inhalation, use intermittent exposure (not more than 15 minutes in an hour). However, a small proportion of people may experience skin irritation, allergic reactions, or sensitivity to essential oils.

Toxicity rarely occurs with appropriate use of essential oils and is primarily attributed to misuse and accidental ingestion, especially in young children.

You should also exercise caution with essential oils if you are pregnant, since essential oils can cross the placental barrier and there is little clinical research in this area.

Someone who takes prescription medication or has allergies should do a patch test to check for skin irritation and sensitivity before using essential oil.

We recommend that you never eat or drink essential oils.

Essential Oil Safety by Robert Tisserand is a valuable reference to understanding potential toxicity and lethal dosages.

Where do you source your ingredients from?

Our essential oils are sourced from all over the world. We work with the best organic raw material producers and farmers who offer the best quality ingredients. We also support our local farmers as much as possible.

There are a lot of different brands of essential available, how do I know I am getting a quality product?

We encourage our customers to read the label carefully to understand what ingredient goes into each product.

Eucalie’s products are made with higher quality ingredients compared to many mainstream brands, and our customers can tell the difference. We are also committed to use safe ingredients, free from harsh chemicals. REIMAGINING OF A COLOURFUL LOVE LIFE EUPHORIA BY LILY KING This award winning historical fiction seems to present a new variation of that genre.

The three main characters in the book Nell, Fen and Adam are based on the well-known anthropologists Margaret Mead, Rio Fortune and Gregory Bateson respectively. These scholars all did field research in New Guinea in the 1930s as pioneers in the newly developing academic field of cultural anthropology. Details of the characters’ lives prior to arriving in New Guinea in the book are similar to real life events of these three people. At that time, Margaret Mead and Rio Fortune were married and Mead was already very famous; however, later Mead and Gregory Bateson married. It was a love triangle among the three anthropologists living in an extremely remote area and all these facts provided the framework of the book. However, the plot, the minor characters, details of the events and dialogue were pure, creative invention.

As the character Nell defined it, euphoria was the state of happiness and excitement achieved at “that moment when you think you’ve finally got a handle on a place, at that moment the place feels entirely yours.” This professional euphoria was equal to sexual ecstasy and held the promise of fame and even fortune. The three characters lived within a few miles of each other in New Guinea, yet worked with entirely different tribal groups and interacted with the tribes in very different ways. Ultimately, the quest for an archeological find as great as the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, drives one of the three to desperate measures.

During the research, some of the aspects of tribal life were difficult for the anthropologists to view without revulsion that came from their background as members of a supposedly advanced civilisation. The three anthropologists were able to collaborate to invent the grid, which categorised groups and civilisations according to personal characteristics. At first, this grid was viewed as a breakthrough of genius. Yet later, this grid was used by the Nazis to justify their theories of racial superiority.

The ending of the book also has a dark mystery which was foreshadowed throughout the book (and had nothing to do with the lives of the real anthropologists that served as models for the characters.) Thus, the theme of civilization versus primitive cultures and good versus evil were interwoven in the plot throughout the book.

Book group members also exchanged details of their own cross-cultural experiences of living in Jakarta and other parts of Indonesia, including attending traditional weddings, traveling in the countryside to view village life, and eating traditional food. One interesting comparison between Indonesian cultures and the tribes of New Guinea was the quote: “Alone was not something Nell saw in the tribes she studied. Alone was how your soul got stolen or your body

kidnapped…The culture even had a proverb against it….not even a monkey walks alone.” Indonesia definitely is a country of group culture as people always seek to work and live in groups, preferably of their own ethnic origins.

Although the book was not enthusiastically enjoyed by all, it did provide the basis of a very detailed, lively discussion.

COMPELLING COLLECTION OF DARK STORIES THE ASSASSINATION OF MARGARET THATCHER BY HILARY MANTEL The short story collection, written by the award winning British author Hilary Mantel is entitled The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher.

Nine of the ten stories had been previously published, but the short story of the title was newly published in this book in 2014.

There was a great deal of controversy after the author’s assertion that she had viewed Margaret Thatcher from her window and had fantasised about killing her in 1983.

The comment was then addressed in an interview in The Guardian, where someone posed that this provocative statement was offensive, but would enable more book sales.

The advantage of reading a book of short stories is that each story can be read separately and the characters do not have much development which frees the reader from the continuous attention of a long novel. The stories all seemed to have a dark element and reviewers have labeled this collection “brusque, mischievous, quirky, frightening and even ghoulish.” It was also enlightening when it was discovered that a copy of the book bought in Bandung had a different order of the ten short stories. In that version the first story “Sorry to Disturb” and the last “The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher” were swapped. Both stories begin with a woman opening her apartment door to an unknown man.

In both cases, this action initiates a series of increasingly strange events.

Several readers expressed the feeling of dismay reading that a female character would open her door to a strange man… something that every culture seems to warn against. Three of the stories are narrated by an author who is a female writer and give significant clues into the life of a writer. The most poignant of these is “Terminus” about a writer who sees her deceased father in a crowd on a big city street and tries to follow him. This led to a discussion of similar instances of mistaken identity experienced by the book club members.

The other stories are narrated in the third person with a variety of unusual topics including anorexia, adultery and rape.

The author is able to create a mood with a warning in most of the stories. Hillary Mantel once again uses her gift of description and command of language in this collection of compelling stories that examine the darker sides of life. ¿
