Providing monthly support to projects across the Greater Jakarta Region. Projects generally fall within the following categories:

ORPHANAGES

donations given to help cover some running costs of the orphanages.

CHILD HEALTH & DISABILITY SUPPORT funds help local charities who are providing care in a number of health areas.

ELDERLY SUPPORT PROJECTS ANZA primarily provides monthly funds to four Pusaka (elderly kitchens) which help cover some running costs.

EDUCATION SUPPORT PROJECTS ANZA's support ranges from contributions for administrative costs to recruiting volunteer Englishspeaking teachers.

ONE-OFF PROJECTS ANZA regularly receives requests to support various projects. Our Social Welfare Committee assesses where we are able to help.

These are either passed on to communities in need or sold in our quarterly garage sales.

HAVING A BALL AT ANZA Dear Readers, Welcome! There has been a lot going on since our last issue.

The most significant event, being our annual charity ball ANZA's Night In Wonderland.

The Ball was a year of planning and I am very proud of the Ball team for putting on a wonderful event and raising substantial funds for ANZA Social Welfare Program. Readers will get a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes action and the colourful guests, who made it a night to remember (p.14) The tail end of the year can get a bit crazy with festive celebrations and holiday planning, especially when you are far from loved ones. We have a few tips on implementing self-care (p.26) that may come in handy.

I am happy to have welcomed many newcomers in the past few months and pleased that we have added to our pool of volunteers. I am grateful to all our members, who offer their time, enthusiasm and talents to run our events, activities and social welfare work. It takes many hands to make ANZA the fun, lively and supportive community that it is, so thank you.

I would also like to thank our partners and sponsors, who continue to support our events and house.

We have plenty more planned in the coming months, so keep an eye on our social media and e-news for updates.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I'm Kerryn Filmer from Sydney, Australia. I moved to Jakarta in August 2017 wth my husband, Mark, who works for Coca-Cola Amatil. This is our first overseas posting.

What have been your initial impressions of Jakarta?

Big, busy, bustling and a city of huge contrasts. The chasm between the ‘have and the have nots’ seemed enormous and extremely confronting. I have since discovered beauty and happiness amongst it all.

What is one thing you have been surprised by since arriving in Jakarta?

The absolutely genuine friendliness of Indonesians, and the warmth of other expats.

Have you had a chance to explore any areas of Jakarta or Indonesia?

We have done the car free Sunday walk from Hotel Mulia to Monas...Sepa Pulau for an overnight stay...Kota Tua...Rangunan Zoo...Bogor Zoo...Ancol Marina and Eco Park… Bali… a few restaurants, cafes and bars What is one place you are excited to explore in Indonesia?

The train trip to Yogyakarta.

What is one thing you wished you packed?

My adult children: Ashlea and Briana and my rag doll cat: Frankie... Oh and top sheets for our bed.

How did you learn about ANZA? Heard about it through Coca Cola Amatil in Australia before moving to Jakarta.

What are you first impressions of ANZA community?

WOW, I have been so impressed by the level of professionalism and the dedication of so many interested and caring women, who are working hard to make a difference in so many lives.

I have also enjoyed meeting delightful women who truly understand what it is like to be an expat in Indonesia. The sense of community is encouraging.

What would you like to get involved with at ANZA? I am interested in helping wherever I can and just connecting with others.¿

ENCOURAGING INDEPENDENT READING Today’s Readers, Tomorrow’s Leaders arly literacy skills are the roots of reading success and it is never too early to plant the seed. Reading for, and reading together with your child, even from birth - is highly recommended for the mastery of literacy skills.

E

By the time your child is at the basic reading level, it is crucial to foster their interest in Independent Reading. As the National Reading Panel, the group of reading experts assembled by the US Department of Education by the request of the Congress, has stated in their report,

“There is no better way to increase your child’s chances of success in becoming a proficient reader, and becoming someone who enjoys reading, than by reading independently.”

At AIS, Independent Reading skills are something that we consistently hone in all our students by using effective Independent Reading programs. In addition to the strong curriculum that prioritizes multi-language learning, AIS students are well equipped with access to an extensive library and electronic reading facilities offering different genres suited to their reading interests and ability.

However, the key to Independent Reading that we most pride ourselves on is our dedicated teachers and specialists who are constantly assisting and encouraging students to enjoy independent reading.

While the word “independent” is

the core aspect of the activity, it is only through the right guidance and motivation that our students will further excel in their reading skills.

Book and text discussions greatly enhance achievement, as do strategic interventions and monitoring by experienced, well qualified teachers.

Working together with parents, reading homework is assigned as a way for child-parent bonding while also increasing collective literacy skills and reading habits that greatly develop reading skills and confidence. AIS has fully invested, not only in terms of resources, but also with teacher training and the employment of teachers who understand the process of reading skill development and who have a passion for teaching.

Our Goal : To develop a genuine love of reading that lasts a lifetime.

A collaborative event with Local Businesses

On September 8th, ANZA held an adults-only BBQ night to welcome everyone back from the summer holiday. This house event was the first to be organized by volunteers from our sponsorship team as a collaborative event with local businesses.

I think everyone who attended can attest to its success!

Thank you to the many volunteers on the night, and especially to our bar men and women who kept the liquids flowing.¿

We would like to say a massive THANK YOU to our event sponsors – British School International, D’Biff, MammaRosy, Two Island Wines, Levant, Sayurbox, Rosalie Cheese, First Love Patisserie, Chocolate Monggo and Honey Lane for the wonderful food and drink served on the night.

Our prize raffle was also generously supported by prizes donated by Asian Tigers, SOS Medika, Chope, Mulia Hotel and Society Wines. Society Wines also hosted a wine sale with a portion of the proceeds from their wines sales going to ANZA Social Welfare.

Oh what a night! A few footsteps from our taxi through the calm and quiet lobby of the Fairmont Hotel and down the rabbit hole we went. Upon landing at the ball entrance, it was teeming with characters both in costume and spirit.

Playing cards and Queens of Hearts swirled through the anteroom. White Rabbits and Mad Hatters of all styles abounded, chatting over their mysterious purple cocktails.

And of course, there was Alice! Dressed as the Cheshire Cat, myself, I was happily popping in and out from table to lobby grinning from ear to ear. How fun to see all of our friends from across our ANZA community and have a good laugh over everyone’s get ups! The anteroom was lined with silent auction items and raffle ticket stations. A tea party display was available for friends to capture zany group photos.

The tables were topped with gorgeous stacked dishes decorated with butterflies, flowers, and berries painstakingly glue-gunned by so many ANZA members and volunteers who happened to have a few spare hours during the week leading up. ANZA Gold Sponsors, Asian Tigers, worked to provide both the giant entry keyhole welcoming us into the dining room and the massive 'Big Alice' legs planted in the corner for kneeside photo ops.

Our volunteers carried in and set up these items in the wee hours of the morning following the Australian Independent School’s presentation of the Alice in Wonderland play the evening before the Ball. For those of us who are parents of kids at AIS, the coincidental alignment of the school play and the ANZA Ball theme and timing made for an exciting and whimsical end of term 3 and an exciting send off on the upcoming 2-week school break. The ANZA Ball stage blossomed with borrowed giant mushrooms and flowers created at AIS.

After the tables were open for seating, ANZA board members gave thanks to all contributors—attendees at the charity ball and our sponsors. We sang both the Australian and New Zealand anthems and quickly sat for the business of finishing our fabulous Fairmont fares. The meal was superb and the champagne flowed freely as if each glass were labeled “Drink me.”

A local Jakarta band—Centerstage— started playing classic tunes that pulled most of us on the floor. Giant hats, furry ears, and blond Alice wigs bobbed to the music. The drink had imparted its effect. Much like Big Alice, our courage grew sky high, as did our mad skill on the dance floor.

This part of the party becomes a little more muddled than the rest. Sadly, this Cheshire Cat was not well-trained in Gonzo journalism. To my knowledge, no one was beheaded, and everyone was restored more-or-less to their original size.

We were all left with great memories of a grand adventure ... waking from our dream of strange characters and wondrous happenings of ANZA in Wonderland.¿

Photos and reports have been sent to all the sponsors, and we are asking for sponsorship payments for 2018/19.

We have taken on lots of new students and we will be launching our annual Christmas Appeal at the ANZA Social Welfare ExtravagANZA on Friday, 30 November.

2018/19 is a milestone year as the program is celebrating its 30th anniversary. We have a series of trips and activities planned for the students over the next six months, and ANZA sponsors and members are welcome to join us.

Social Welfare Tour: Nurani Insani

by Erica Miller, ANZA Member and Social Welfare Volunteer ANZA Social Welfare Team is organising regular group visits to its projects around Jakarta. This is an opportunity for members to see firsthand the work we do and meet the people who are impacted. Our most recent tour was to Yayasan Nurani Insani.

On October 4, a small group of ANZA members set off from ANZA house to visit Yayasan Nurani Insani, a school for street children in Slipi - not that far from Semanggi junction. ANZA has been involved with Nurani Insani for more than 25 years.

In 2013, we helped to pay for a permanent school building.

We currently provide monthly contributions to cover some of the school’s operational costs.

We met Pak Dedi, the Headmaster and Ibu Een, his wife and the school administrator. Ibu Een is also called Mami as she is everyone’s mother.

We were shown the clinic where a free doctor is available for people to see two days a week. We were also shown a room

which has been outfitted as a hairdressing studio to teach practical skills to the school pupils.

Afterwards, we visited two classes of secondary school pupils who were very friendly and keen to practice their English skills.

The school operates as a secondary school three days a week and a primary school on the remaining three days.

Finally, we visited the very busy and popular kindergarten where the pupils were given a snack pack in honour of our visit. We were very happy to see them playing with the toys that were donated by ANZA.¿

ANZA supports Nurani Insani with monthly contributions used to cover some operational costs. ANZA volunteers also go to the school every week to provide lessons in English, arts and crafts and music.

Have you ever dreamt about a paradise within a stone’s throw of Jakarta? Caroline shares her visit to Pulau Macan, a.k.a Tiger Island, part of the Thousand Islands.

How To Take Care Of Yourself As An Expat

The expat lifestyle brings with it many privileges, but also some unique challenges. Silke Irmscher is an Empowerment Coach for International People. Originally from Germany she has lived in Indonesia for more than 15 years and has some great tips for managing your self-care as an expat.

Living an expat life is special. It is especially exciting, but sometimes also especially exhausting. When living in another country you face different, more and heavier challenges than back home. May it be the foreign culture, the different climate or the unusual immediate environment – there are a few "energy thieves" (as I call them) that drain a lot of your physical, emotional, and mental strength.

But abroad you need your energy more than ever. Only if you look after yourself well, you can be there for others. That's why, it is so important to take care of yourself. And to do this consciously!

Creating your Expat Self-Care Program The problem that many expats face is that the conditions they need for their self-care at home are not available in the foreign country. This is not a big deal. You can find new ways of self-care abroad. With them, you might even get to know closer your guest country. And who knows, maybe you will

find a new hobby that you will not want to miss once you´ve returned home?

By creating your personal Expat Self-Care Program, you can follow a strategy. It’s nothing complex, but simple: Pay attention to keeping the balance – balance between activities or techniques that support physical, emotional and mental self-care.

Physical self-care When dealing with stress – and every expat does this – your body is the first one that shows signs of energy blockades: tense muscles, increasing number of sicknesses, digestion problems – just to mention a few.

Workout Give your body the chance to get rid of the tension and workout! Go for regular runs or a bike rides. Join a sports

team, no matter if they play your favorite sport or not. Do yoga or tai chi or any other relaxation exercises.

Your stress is mostly made by your mind. By doing physical activities you can leave your thinking and be more 'in your body'. This reduces tension and has an energizing effect on your immune system.

Relaxation & sleep The more stress you face, the more your body needs time to regenerate. Relax consciously. Spend time in nature – if possible. Catch enough sleep. And if you are among those who live in a country with a wonderful spa culture, have regular massages or other treatments. By the way, these do not only give your body a treat, but also your soul.

Food Eat healthy and follow a balanced diet.

Drink enough clear water. Water does not only wash out poisonous substances, but ensures also that your brain works well.

And no matter if it is healthy or not: Eat your favorite food if you can get it, because it also feeds your soul.

Emotional self-care If our emotions are in balance, we feel grounded, strong and able to deal with whatever challenges that come across our expat path. We can control our anger and overcome our fear or sadness. We are able to feel joy and happiness.

positive mind – not only abroad but in life in general. The best way to start thinking positively is to get rid of negative thinking (something that most of the people do 85% !!! of their time). Instead of complaining, regretting, grumbling about circumstances that are not ok, point out things that ARE ok.

Start watching your thoughts. Once you catch yourself thinking negative stuff, try to find positive aspects of the same situation. Do that often. Do that at least once at the end of every day! With every thought, your body releases chemical substances that either poison or strengthen your energy system. Imagine, how wonderful you would feel, if the majority of those would carry positive messages!

Give your mind a break. In a time when zillions of thoughts flood your mind, it is essential to get rid of all that mumbling in your head at least for a while. Meditation is a great way to calm down all that. Meditate, practice stillness regularly.

Last but not least, I need to say: Self-care needs time. And since you need to care extra for yourself abroad, you will need more time than usual to give yourself a treat. Don´t have this time? Take it! There is nothing more important than your physical and mental health. Many expats only realize this at a time when it is already too late; they feel exhausted, burned out, or sick.

However exciting or exhausting your time abroad might be, make it a fantastic experience! Pay attention to your personal energy level and keep it in balance. Never forget: Take care of yourself.¿

How to care for your emotions?

First, keep your body healthy. Only if you feel relaxed and strong, are you able to produce positive emotions and overcome the negative ones.

Socialize – surround yourself with positive people. Spend time with your family. Find friends that have a positive energy. People that make you laugh and you feel comfortable with, that inspire you in some way and that you feel connected to.

Do things that bring you joy – may it be reading a book, cooking or doing arts. Live your passions. Learn something new! Acquire new skills, explore science or your guest culture.

For example, by immersing yourself in the place where you are, you can reduce stress twice: You get satisfaction by learning AND delete stressors that were caused by cultural confusion because you gain a deeper understanding about your environment.

Jakarta Life, Landscapes and Lithography An Interview with Ken Pattern

Canadian artist, Ken Pattern has been capturing the beauty of Indonesia for almost three decades. He has been a generous supporter of ANZA Social Welfare Program over the years, donating several of his stunning lithographs for our fundraising events. We welcomed the opportunity to learn more about his work.

How did you get started with Lithography?

What was it that attracted you to the technique?

I had had a couple public exhibitions in Vancouver in the late 1970s of drawings and paintings, all unique pieces, one of a kind. I quickly realized that this procedure would limit my exposure and pretty much tie me to one gallery.

However, if I produced prints (multiples), I could show my work simultaneously in several galleries at the same time in a variety of places.

For the next two years I studied lithography and intaglio but in the end decided lithography was best suited to my style and ability. I came from a strong background in drawing and lithography is a perfect drawing medium.

What do you enjoy most about the process?

In lithography, one is drawing not on paper but on a flat piece of limestone ground to a satisfactory surface on which to draw.

The Jakarta images are predominantly black and white because I see this city as a black and white place. Jakarta is certainly a city of contrasts, and black and white is symbolic of this contrast: new/old, rich/poor, traditional/global, planned/unplanned, a constant mishmash of so many variables jumbled together, but not necessarily blending together.

When I set out to depict or document the changes I saw in the city, especially during the period 1990 - 1996, I wanted to highlight the physical environment that Jakartans lived in, especially when so many modern glass and steel skyscrapers spread across the skyline juxtaposed against the traditional kampungs.

I often tell other foreigners that the only thing you need to bring with you when entering a kampung is a smile. It is always a delight to stop and chat with people along the way, people who may be surprised to see you practically walking through their modest homes, but friendly and welcoming and smiling.

And then later when I get it right, whether a drawing, lithograph or painting, I feel rewarded in having captured a

Most of my early Jakarta scenes were without people and the reason for this is that when a person(s) is in a scene, that person becomes the focal point. I wanted the physical locations to be the focal point. The viewer knew there are a gazillion people in these scenes and while focusing on the site the viewer could subconsciously fill in the people. And in the meantime it gave the viewer pause to reflect on a sense of place of where these people sleep and work and play and lead a normal life.

The majority of kampung buildings seen in these scenes had little historical value for they were not very old. And they had almost no architectural significance. What they did represent to me however was social bearing, in a society that was going through rapid change, physically, emotionally, economically and certainly socially. I thought at the time (and still do) that it was important to capture this transition and document what I came to call a SOCIAL HERITAGE. Later, I began to put people in my scenes, and I purposely put them there because they were the face of a traditional lifestyle that was and is disappearing. The various kaki limas (push carts) and vendors making their way through kampung alleys selling a vast array of prepared food and merchandise, the jamu ladies in their very traditional batik dress and a great variety of tukangs offering services and skills, are unique to Indonesian cities. In our modern cities we go to the supermarket and department stores to buy our goods. In an Indonesian kampung, the supermarket comes to you and by their unique calls, bells and whistles and bamboo knocking you hear, you know exactly who is coming and what they are selling. These people and their activities are what define this place. When you enter a typical modern mall, you enter a very different world - the global world - and it has little relationship to the traditional side of Jakarta, just outside and around the corner.

What is the most rewarding aspect of creating art?

The reward of creating what I make is in the research and the final product.

The research consists of my wandering through kampungs with camera in hand and capturing the various activities and sites along the way. Not many foreigners are seen walking through kampungs, but whenever I have, I always exit looking like a wet dishrag, but with a big smile, for the activity and life and sense of community that thrives there is a reward

Your work is predominantly in black and white and/or very muted colours. What urges you to utilise a more subdued palette vs a bright one?

While I am known mostly for my black and white Jakarta scenes I have also created many colourful works (mostly paintings) of rural Indonesia and the many places I have had the opportunity to visit. I keep a permanent display of some of my lithographs in the gift shop at Galeri Hadiprana in Kemang - this is currently the only outlet in Jakarta featuring my traditional Jakarta scenes and Bali.

How has your work changed over the years?

My work over the past few years has changed course rather dramatically and features the world of trees. I have been drawing and painting Banyan trees and the bark of certain tree species, mostly Brazilian Ironwood, but also Chestnut and Arbutus.

What is next for you?

by Ana Costas-Castro, ANZA Member You ask me about sports and I will tell you, "I'm Puerto Rican.

Baseball is pretty much embedded into our DNA." Rugby? No. Nothing. Zilch. Zero. Nada. I always thought rugby was the Australian version of American Football.

So when my daughter, Sofia showed an interest in playing, my initial reaction was to be overprotective, "Seriously, woman, are you gonna allow Sofía to play?" It just seemed barbaric, manly, and above all, not a sport suitable for MY child to learn. All she would get out of it would be an injury. A serious injury!

That was my way of thinking, but that all changed when my husband was invited to play for the Odd Socks Rugby Team at the Jakarta 10s Rugby Tournament. The Odd Socks is a team composed of a bunch of sporty Odd Socks men (overweight, overstressed, overthe-hill men that truly believed, somewhere in the back of their minds, they can still play like 20 year olds). My daughter and I went to support him. We wished him luck. Waited for him to get called into the pitch and see for ourselves the massive physical trauma he was about to endure with his teammates. We had the ‘ambulance’ on standby.

While we waited for that special moment to arrive, Sofia drew her attention to the kids’ teams. She already knew some of them from her school, so the excitement to watch them play was far greater than seeing her dad get ambushed.

She focused on them getting onto the pitch, running with the ball, scoring a try, tackling the opponents. The parents supporting their kids with annoying yells of "Support!

Support!" and "Let's go, Komodos! Let's go!" the whole nine yards!

I went over to her, and before we knew it, we were doing the same thing too. We were screaming and chanting, "Run! Run! Run!" We weren't even part of this cult! Who are these people??? The tournament wasn't even over when she turned to me and said, "I'm gonna play rugby too"... and that my friends was the end of it.

A couple of months later, the 2017-2018 season started. We took her to the try-outs to see if she was really going to fully commit. Not only did she commit to practices twice a week, one of which is every Saturday at Jagorawi Golf and Country Club, (an hour away from Jakarta. Did that matter? NO!), but she made the team. That was late August 2017. A month later, we all flew to Bali to see her compete with her teammates at the Rugby Junior Bali Tournament against teams from around the Asia-Pacific Region. Well, what do you know? The Jakarta Komodos Junior Under 10s won the cup! First tournament!

First cup! First win! The look on her face!

Then...it hit me. It's true when they say some people, "can't see past the end of their nose" because it wasn't until that tournament that I truly saw what Sofía visualised about rugby the first time she got exposed to it. It wasn't only

about playing rugby, it was far more than that. It was about the fun she knew she would have, the friendships she knew she would make, the confidence it would give her, the participation she would have, her being part of a club, a community of people, the sportsmanship skills she would learn, en fin, for the thrill of it all. She saw of these things before I could even realise it for myself. Rugby has become part of our lives.

The new season will definitely bring new excitement, new challenges, more competitions and more trophies to collect. Let's go Komodos!

I am a huge fan of massages and the benefits they have for managing stress. Since treatments are much more affordable here than back home, I try to schedule some pampering on a regular basis. One particular treatment which I was introduced to here in Jakarta is the Creambath.

A Creambath is a wonderful combination of a nourishing hair treatment and massage, focused on the scalp, neck, shoulders, back and arms. I hold a lot of tension in these areas, so the treatment is one of my favourites. Some salons/ spas also target the lower back and face muscles, which is an added bonus.

The harsh water in Jakarta tends to wreak havoc on my locks so the masks used in a creambath are really beneficial for restoring some vitality to my hair (even if only for the short term).

The hair masks vary between establishments, with some using natural concoctions of fruits and oils suited to different hair conditions and others using a generic commercial product. Either way your hair will look lustrous and nourished afterwards. Add a blow dry and you will be ready for a night out.

ICEDBLUE BLUEFLOWER PEA FLOWER ICED TEA TEA We first tasted this refreshing iced tea at JAVARA's cafe. The drink changes colour with the addition of citrus juice and fit with this year's ANZA Ball theme, creating a beautiful welcome drink for our guests.
