Rehub_An e-commerce platform to buy and sell refurbished building materials

Page 1

Rehub An E-commerce portal to buy/sell refurbished material An online hub that makes reusing building materials a viable option in building projects: • Search for reusable building materials across multiple marketplaces and databases • Contact information of verified sellers • Information and inspiration for circular economy • Automated processes of logistics, technical testing, CO2 accounting and risk distribution Role: Strategy l Concept l UX Consultant l UI Designer

Background We live in a throwaway society, and it’s taking a significant toll on the environment. Builders, both public and private, established marketplaces and demolition contractors hold great value in reusable materials. Every year, many buildings are demolished without an assessment of re-use potential, and building owners choose to pay large sums to dispose of the materials as waste. Even wrong orders go straight into the trash! Widespread recycling has drastically reduced the quantity of waste that ends up in landfills. But recycling alone can’t combat the huge amount of waste created from the building industry. The throwaway model is inarguably unsustainable, the answer might well be transitioning to a circular economy! A circular economy is a sustainable model of production and consumption. It uses, reuses, repairs, refurbishes, shares, and finally, recycles. This ensures the maximum value is extracted from items with minimal impact and minimal waste.

Problem Statement How might we design a web platform that connects key players and automates today's complicated process of selling used building materials. How might we design the portal that it becomes easier to find used building materials with the search function across different marketplaces and databases.

User Interview I conducted User interviews with the potential users of the design, as part of the ideation phase and during early concept development. The interviews followed a structured methodology whereby I prepared a number of topics to cover, made a record of what was said in the interview, and systematically analyzed the conversation after the interview. The interview had a well-defined and previously agreed upon topic that I wanted to understand, explore or better specify by talking to people and listening to them.

User Journeys A user journey map was made for both types of users to visualize the process that he/she will go through in order to accomplish their goal. I started the journey mapping by compiling a series of user actions into a timeline. Next, the timeline was fleshed out with user thoughts and emotions in order to create a narrative.
