ACKNOWLEDGEMENT oI, Anvi Mathur of UG -PD:2015 -19 would like to thank our course leader Pranay Mangrati and module tutor Bilal Abid for guiding and supporting us through this module.
oI, would also like to acknowledge friends ,family and the labour who helped me throughout the process of the project.
oAt last I would like to acknowledge all the people who allowed me to go to their houses and observe their dressing areas and understand the problems they faced while organising their hair grooming equipments.
INTRODUCTION System design is the process of defining architecture(structure), modules, interfaces and data for a system to satisfy specified requirements. Each structure of a system is interlinked for the system to work efficiently.
System design could be seen as the application of systems theory to product development. SYSTEM THINKING Sub System Start
Outlet/Output Activity
End
Path Outlet/Output
Time Scale Process
Interface
While this process takes place, there are many sub systems that are added to the path in order to reach the end from the starting point. Some systems come in and go out of the main system. Intervention can happen on any of the interface points. Interface points are the internal/ external factors where inlet/outlet happens on the path.
PROJECT BRIEF To study different systems in the surroundings and find possible interfaces where problems exist and design products to solve the problem.
System of storage in street food vendors
Problem of open wires and unorganised cables
Problem of parking of Motor bikes on pedestrians path
Problem of make shift barricades
Problem of broken roads
Problem of gaps in stairs
Problem of storage of spices
Problem of space in a four stove gas
Problem of multi functioning in kitchen roll dispenser
Problem of storage of trays
Problem of water dripping
Problem of stacking of boxes in fridge
Problem of direction in toilet roll holder
Problem of distance between tap and child to wash hands
Problem of storage of toothbrushes
Problem of storage of toothbrushes
Problem of indication and direction of taps
Problem of getting off the bath tub
Problem of unorganised loose cables when the equipments are not in use
Problem of storage of jewellery
Problem of storage of toothbrushes
Problem of unorganised shoes
FINAL TOPIC
System of organising hair grooming equipments at Homes
PROBLEM AREA
DIFFERENT WAYS OF STORING
USAGE
THINGS TO HANG oHair dryer oHair straightener oHair rod curler oHair clippers oHair rollers oElectronic Brush
INSIGHTS oEntangled Wires oPeople use it during fast times oPeople do not have time to wrap the wires and hang back oVery untidy oUnorganised oPlug points are usually far oProblem of pugging multiple things at a time oToo many equipments oChance of buying new equipments and adding up oMultiple things hanging on one stand oIn case of multiple plug points, wires entangle oAll the mess is visible to others oSpace constraints oUsually hung or kept in drawers
REMODIFIED BRIEF To design a product/ system to solve the problem of storage of unorganised hair grooming equipments and hanging cables that get entangled at homes.
DIMENSIONS OF HAIR GROOMING EQUIPMENTS Hair Dryer
Iron Rod Curler
Hair Straightener
Straightener Brush
DIMENSIONS OF THE AREA Width: 150 mm Distance between walls: 160 mm Space taken when cupboards open: 50mm Remaining space: 170 mm
CONCEPTS
FINAL CONCEPT
CONCEPT Hooks to hang the equipment
Pivot for flap to open 180 Flab to open at 180 degrees because at 90 degrees, a lot of space would be occupies
Multiple plug point
Pivot for flap to open 180 degree Elastic with flaps in which cable of equipment would be enclosed and would open when equipment would be taken out
Iterations of Final Concept (Mock ups) Exploring ways of winding and unwinding cables through elastic:
FINAL CONCEPT(DRAWING)
FINAL CONCEPT (MOCK UP) A cabinet with a sliding shutter door and an elastic string attached to the cable of the equipment that winds and unwinds the cable and stretches out as per the user’s requirements.
ABOUT THE PRODUCT A cabinet for organising hair grooming equipments in dressing areas at homes with space constraints. The cabinet will have a sliding shutter door and an elastic string attached to the cable of the equipment that winds and unwinds the cable and stretches out as per the user’s requirements. The equipments will be hung on hooks which will be placed on the back side of the cabinet. There will be multiple point electric boards on the inner top of the cabinet for the functioning of the equipments. There will be just one main plug for the entire cabinet that will power all the equipments. The elastic tied with the cable double ups when it unwinds and shrinks when the elastic winds. This saves all the mess up and entangling of the cables when open. The shutter door, which helps in hiding all the equipments also saves space by opening sideways, instead of other directions which occupy a lot of space.
MATERIALS AND PROCESS The box would be made of minimum 8mm Plywood. The groove for the shutter would be made by a router 5mm deep and 4mm wide in a U shape. The shutter door is made of 3mm MDF board which is laser cut in 10 mm wide pieces and are chamfered from the side. For making the door, a canvas cloth is stuck behind all the 70 pieces of wooden strips. After the groove is cut of radius 30mm, it is sanded and veneer is cut in strips and stuck inside the groove for smooth moving of the shutter. Further, the plywood is filleted from the corners of radius 40mm. After all the pieces are ready, the box is fixed with fevicol and hammering nails. Veneer/Mica is then stuck on all surfaces of the box for surface finishing. The shutter door is then fixed into the grooves to slide sideways. A handle is then fixed on the a piece of wood onto the shutter door. 4 hooks are then attached inside the box on specified distances for the equipments to hang. Multiple electric boxes will be attached on the top inner part of the box to power the equipments. There will be just one main plug for the entire cabinet that will power all the equipments. Once everything is ready, the equipments will be taken and the cable will be measured, according to which half the length of bobbin elastic will be cut and fixed to the cable with cable ties on a distance of 150 mm. When the cable is ready, the equipment along with the winded cable are hung on the hooks.
DIFFERENT VENEER VARIANTS The product would be available in the following veneer finishes which are mostly used in used in houses. The product can easily match the interiors of the ladies houses.
