We are a charity

The Anvil Trust is the charity behind Anvil Arts, the largest performing arts organisation in Hampshire that operates three fantastic cultural venues. We bring many big names to Basingstoke and attract 200,000 people into the town centre each year, who visit shops, bars, restaurants and hotels, as well as The Anvil , The Haymarket and The Forge.

Trust members are local people with specific skills to ensure we meet our charitable objectives. For further details, please contact the Chief Executive.

As an independent charity we can:

• Make sure that we present a variety of performances for a wide range of audiences, both popular and specialist

• Help Basingstoke gain a reputation as a town with a strong cultural offer, punching above its weight on the national stage

• Give opportunities to local children, schools and colleges, young musicians and performers

• Work to benefit people on the autistic spectrum and people with dementia, their carers and families, with specially designed projects

• Partner with other charities, both local and national, to make our resources go further

• Apply for investment from Arts Council England and other support organisations

• Make sure that any surplus is reinvested in our work to benefit people in Basingstoke and Hampshire, making the Borough a better place to live and work

New foyer opening hours and pre-show service

We will send you a text message 48 hours before the performance, with a link to your tickets and other information about your visit. There’s also a quick and easy way to pre-order your drinks.

With the foyers now open from 6pm, you can arrive earlier and relax before the show.

SWEDISH PHILHARMONIA

Bo Linde A Merry Overture

Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto

Sibelius Symphony no. 2

Nemanja Radulović violin

Jaime Martin

The opening piece is by one of Sweden’s most renowned composers and lives up to its name. Tchaikovsky ’s Violin Concerto begins in heroic vein, followed by a tender and beautiful slow movement. The spectacular finale takes the form of a whirling Russian dance.

Sibelius ’ second symphony was written largely in Italy and inhabits a very different musical world from the northern darkness of his first. The sense of renewal and exploration continues through its four movements before building inexorably to the final thrilling brass theme.

Thorvaldsdóttir Metacosmos

Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no. 2

Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 5

Sir Stephen Hough piano

Eva Ollikainen

Anna Thorvaldsdóttir ’s richly detailed and rewarding music always makes a strong impression and her piece Metacosmos is “a gorgeous and engrossing tone poem” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Rachmaninov ’s Second Piano Concerto was a breakthrough piece after years of creative block. Its passionate and lyrical character has deservedly made it a favourite amongst his works.

Tchaikovsky ’s Fifth Symphony was composed on his return to Russia in 1888 after a successful European concert tour. The waltz feel of much of the first movement foreshadows the waltz which takes the place of the usual scherzo. The slow movement is pure melody, while the finale is a burst of power and orchestral colour.

Bernstein Overture: Candide

Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto in D major Arnold Little Suite No. 2

Elgar Enigma Variations

Stephen Scotchmer

Bernstein’s lively, effervescent Overture: Candide has been described as “a shower of musical sparks” and provides a sparkling opening to any concert.

Tchaikovsky’s glorious Violin Concerto is one of the most famous in the repertoire. Malcolm Arnold’s Little Suite No.2 was written when the composer was at his peak. The third movement is a dance, notable for its jazzy rhythms featuring the percussion section, especially a prominent part for bongos! The concert closes with Elgar’s magnificent Enigma Variations –a brilliant musical characterisations of his friends, including the famous Nimrod.
