SIBERIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Rachmaninov Glazunov Tchaikovsky

The Rock Violin Concerto Symphony no. 4

Alexander Sitkovetsky Dmitry Vasiliev

violin

The twenty-year-old Rachmaninov’s expressive tone poem The Rock won the enthusiastic admiration of Tchaikovsky. Glazunov’s passionately lyrical Violin Concerto shows the composer at the height of his creative powers. Tchaikovsky’s powerful Fourth Symphony is one of his most successful works. The opening fanfare, said to represent the power of fate, is followed by a lyrical slow movement and pizzicato scherzo. In the finale, the fanfare returns to striking effect as the work drives to its headlong conclusion. £42, £38, £31, £24, £16. JEEVES & WOOSTER IN PERFECT NONSENSE

a new play adapted from the works of P.G.Wodehouse, written by The Goodale Brothers Take your seats with caution! Aristocratic buffoon Bertie Wooster has hired The Haymarket to present his one-man show detailing a recent and rather spectacular series of misadventures, including the theft of a novelty cow creamer and a narrow escape from unwanted matrimony. The only trouble is Bertie hasn’t worked out who’s going to play the parts. Will the show be a disaster? Will the scenery stay upright? Or will his trusty manservant Jeeves step in and save the day? “I have to say I’m finding this acting business rather easy Jeeves! Apart from having to do a newt impression, I think that went tremendously well.” In a joyous re-imagining of P.G.Wodehouse’s characters, three actors hurl themselves from role to role as they race to tell the story of Bertie’s own farcical adventures. After hugely successful runs in the West End, it won the 2014 Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. £23, Sat matinee £21. Under 25s £12 (includes £3 booking fee)

PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA Kodàly Khachaturian Sibelius

Suite: Hàry Jànos Violin Concerto Symphony no. 5

Nemanja Radulovic violin Santtu-Matias Rouvali Kodàly’s popular suite begins with an orchestral ‘sneeze’ and goes on to recount tall tales of the hero’s exploits against Napoleon. Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto is possibly his finest work. The flavour of folk music from the composer’s native Armenia is often evident. Sibelius’ fifth and most well-known symphony grows from the seed of its tiny opening figure to the most outwardly heroic of his seven works in the form which builds to a final majestic brass theme. £42, £38, £31, £24, £16.
