We are a charity

The Anvil Trust is the charity behind Anvil Arts, the largest performing arts organisation in Hampshire that operates three fantastic cultural venues. We bring many big names to Basingstoke and attract 200,000 people into the town centre each year, who visit shops and restaurants, as well as The Anvil , The Haymarket and The Forge.

As an independent charity we can:

• Make sure that we present a variety of performances for a wide range of audiences, both popular and specialist

• Help Basingstoke gain a reputation as a town with a strong cultural offer, punching above its weight on the national stage

• Give opportunities to local children, schools and colleges, young musicians and performers

• Work to benefit people on the autistic spectrum and people with dementia, their carers and families with specially designed projects

• Partner with other charities, both local and national, to make our resources go further

• Apply for investment from Arts Council England and other support organisations

• Make sure that any surplus is always reinvested in our work to benefit people in Basingstoke and Hampshire, making the Borough a better place to live and work

New foyer opening and pre-show service

We recently launched our new e-ticketing and pre-show service and hope it has improved your experience. We will send you a text message 48 hours before the performance, with a link to your tickets and other information about your visit. There’s also a quick and easy way to pre-order your drinks. PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA

Weber Overture: Der Freischütz Weber Clarinet Concerto no. 1 Brahms Symphony no. 1 Michael Collins clarinet Nodoka Okisawa *

Weber’s magnificent overture concentrates the most important elements of the drama into a memorable tone-poem. Weber’s first clarinet concerto brilliantly exploits the qualities of the instrument, with the music ranging in character from grand to jaunty and playful, with a particularly imaginative slow movement.

The prolonged effort that Brahms ’ First Symphony cost the composer as he struggled to escape from the shadow of Beethoven is well known. Nevertheless, it resulted in one of his most satisfying works.

BOURNEMOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Debussy Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune Bartók Piano Concerto no. 2 Elgar Symphony no. 2 Sunwook Kim piano Kirill Karabits

Debussy ’s ground-breaking prélude is a delicate and subtle translation into sound of a lazy summer afternoon.

Bartók ’s thrilling and spectacular Piano Concerto no. 2 is an all-stops-out masterpiece. The mysterious slow movement is interrupted by a whirlwind scherzo, and framed by dynamic outer movements of great energy and excitement.

Elgar ’s Second Symphony was dedicated to King Edward VII, but behind the grandeur of its public face lies a more thoughtful and uncertain world. Elgar’s mastery of this wide range of emotional expression, and ability to use his large orchestra to powerful effect, is complete.

HEAVENLY SKIES

Beethoven Overture: Leonora no. 3

Vaughan Williams The Lark Ascending Mahler Symphony no. 4

Thomas Gould violin

Natalia Tanasii soprano

Alexander Soddy

Beethoven ’s dramatic overture is a perfect concentration of the themes of his opera Fidelio. In The Lark Ascending, the solo violin soars above the orchestra in increasing rapture, contrasted with a more folk-inspired second theme.

The Fourth is Mahler ’s most serene symphony, written at a time when everything in his life seemed to be going well. After three graceful and mostly good-humoured movements, it concludes with a child’s-eye view of heaven, as a place where food, games, and music overflow in abundance.

Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto Sibelius Symphony no. 2 Nemanja Radulović violin Jaime Martin

The opening piece is by one of Sweden’s most renowned composers and lives up to its name. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto begins in heroic vein, followed by a tender and beautiful slow movement. The spectacular finale takes the form of a whirling Russian dance.

Sibelius ’ second symphony was written largely in Italy and inhabits a very different musical world from the northern darkness of his first. The sense of renewal and exploration continues through its four movements before building inexorably to the final thrilling brass theme.

PETER FROSDICK and CLASSICAL EVENTS present

a new comedy by David Cantor and Michael Kingsbury

Comedy’s no laughing matter... ‘misleads’, ‘straight reverses’, ‘telegraphing’, ‘the rule of three’, ‘the law of C’, ‘jumping the shark’…. these are the rules of comedy. You can’t just learn them. You have to live them.

Five strangers gather in the conference room of a shabby hotel on the outskirts of Farnham. Despite character differences, there is one thing that links Pam, Gavin, Morgan, Dale and Amy… to realise their dreams through comedy.

Frank Donohue, the finest sitcom writer of his generation, has flown in from Los Angeles to conduct a seminar teaching his five lucky disciples the tricks of the trade, and how to write the perfect sitcom. During the class, their everyday lives are exposed revealing mix ups, farcical revelations and gut-wrenching tragedies.

From the writers of BBC hits My Family , Two Pints of Lager and A Packet of Crisps , and Green Green Grass . Inspired by comic greats John Sullivan (Only Fools and Horses ), Tom Anderson (Cheers ) and Brian Cooke (Man About The House, Round The Horne… Revisited ). £33.

PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA

GALA CONCERT

Beethoven Triple Concerto

Strauss Ein Heldenleben

Nicola Benedetti violin Sheku Kanneh-Mason cello Benjamin Grosvenor piano Santtu-Matias Rouvali

A dream team of soloists join forces in Beethoven ’s Triple Concerto , a rewarding oddity among his works, which has deservedly become more popular in recent years. The polonaise-influenced finale is a delight from start to finish. Strauss ’ opulent yet tongue in cheek portrait of himself as the hero of the title shows the composer bursting with confidence in his own powers. The music portrays his home life and his battles with critics, before he finally settles down to a life of peace and artistic productivity. Strauss ’ imagination blazes through his unrivalled knowledge of the orchestra to produce an enthralling piece.

BASINGSTOKE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Rossini Overture William Tell Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor Grieg Peer Gynt Suite no. 1 Saint Saens Danse Macabre Walton Henry V Suite (from the film)

Braimah Kanneh-Mason violin Stephen Scotchmer

Legends, mystery and magic abound. William Tell was a Swiss folk hero. The Overture to Rossini’s depicts dawn, a storm and a rollicking march made famous by its use as the theme tune to The Lone Ranger. Mendelssohn’s beautiful Violin Concerto was written for his friend David. The Orchestra is very fortunate to have as their soloist the dynamic and versatile young violinist Braimah KannehMason. Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt is loosely based on a Norwegian fairy tale. Grieg’s Suites taken from his incidental music to the play, brilliantly depict the fantasy. In Saint Saens’ Danse Macabre midnight strikes and the solo violin summons representatives from all walks of life to dance along to the grave –a tune familiar to many as the theme to Jonathan Creek. The concert ends with Walton’s dramatic music to the Olivier film version of Henry V £26.50, £21.50, £14.50. Over 65s £2 off, under 16s £3, f/t students £13.25, £10.75, £7.25 (includes £3 booking fee)
