“One of the most vital arts organisations in southern England” The Times

We are a charity

The Anvil Trust is the charity behind Anvil Arts, the largest performing arts organisation in Hampshire that operates three fantastic cultural venues.

We bring many big names to Basingstoke and attract 200,000 people into the town centre each year, who visit shops, bars, restaurants and hotels, as well as The Anvil , The Haymarket and The Forge.

Trust members are local people with specific skills to ensure we meet our charitable objectives. For further details, please contact the Chief Executive.

As an independent charity we can:

• Make sure that we present a variety of performances for a wide range of audiences, both popular and specialist

• Help Basingstoke gain a reputation as a town with a strong cultural offer, punching above its weight on the national stage

• Give opportunities to local children, schools and colleges, young musicians and performers

• Work to benefit people on the autistic spectrum and people with dementia, their carers and families, with specially designed projects

• Partner with other charities, both local and national, to make our resources go further

• Apply for investment from Arts Council England and other support organisations

• Make sure that any surplus is reinvested in our work to benefit people in Basingstoke and Hampshire, making the Borough a better place to live and work

Foyer opening hours and pre-show service

We will send you a text message 24–48 hours before the performance, with a link to your e-tickets and other information about your visit. There’s also a quick and easy way to pre-order your drinks. Foyers open from 6pm for evening performances.

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

Beethoven Symphony no. 6 (Pastoral )

Shostakovich Concerto for piano and trumpet Stravinsky The Firebird (1919)

Martin James Bartlett piano

Paul Bosworth trumpet

Elena Schwarz

The impulse behind the Pastoral symphony was Beethoven ’s own love of the Austrian countryside. The five movements include a solitary walk by a brook, a peasants’ dance, a spectacular summer thunderstorm, and a final, tranquil hymn of thanksgiving.

Shostakovich ’s early concerto is an exuberant and high-spirited piece which combines both instruments in ingenious and witty dialogue with the orchestra and each other.

The Firebird was Stravinsky ’s first big success, a richly coloured ballet score based on a Russian folk tale in which the young prince overcomes a demon with the protection of a feather from the fabled firebird. It is glittering, imaginatively orchestrated music, with a rhythmic impetus all Stravinsky’s own.

Beethoven Violin Concerto Tchaikovsky Symphony no. 4

Sebastian Weigle

We’re delighted to welcome this distinguished orchestra to The Anvil for the first time, with one of the world’s great violinists. They begin with an enticing rarity from one of Japan’s most popular composers of the last century, who was as much at home in the film studio as the concert hall.

Beethoven ’s Violin Concerto begins with five strokes of the timpani and unfolds from this simple beginning into the most noble and lyrical of all concertos for the instrument.

Tchaikovsky ’s powerful Fourth Symphony begins with an arresting fanfare, said to represent the power of fate. A lyrical slow movement and pizzicato scherzo follow. In the finale, the fanfare returns to striking effect as the work drives to its headlong conclusion.

Blackeyed Theatre in association with Harrogate Theatre and South Hill Park Arts Centre presents Dracula

The year is 1897. Mankind is on the cusp of vast technological change, scientific mastery and media innovation. But poised between traditional beliefs, the threat of the unknown and the shock of the new world, an altogether darker fear is emerging. As a new shadow looms large over England, a small group of young men and women, led by Professor Van Helsing, are plunged into an epic struggle for survival.

Stretching from London, through provincial England, to the mountainous wastes of Transylvania, Bram Stoker ’s gothic thriller embodies the struggle to break taboos, resist temptation, and stop the unknown outside becoming the enemy within.

Adapted by Nick Lane , this brilliant, theatrical treatment of Dracula blends Victorian gothic with the contemporary, showcasing Blackeyed Theatre ’s trademark style, and featuring a haunting soundscape, powerful performances and innovative design for an exhilarating theatrical experience.

And when the real Fiona turns up, not to mention Vyvian (a member of the local Sons of Satan Association, who wants to use Jo for his first human sacrifice) and Beverley and Vyvian’s identical triplet policeman brother, the stage is well and truly set for a fast-moving madcap comedy of multiple mistaken identity.

Beethoven Overture: Egmont

Grieg Piano Concerto Brahms Symphony no. 4

Federico Colli piano

Jonathan Darlington

Beethoven ’s stirring and dynamic overture brilliantly sets the scene for Goethe’s play about a noble opponent of tyranny in the sixteenth century.

Grieg ’s piano concerto is the perfect balance of drama and lyricism, from its famous opening flourish to the vigorous ‘peasant dance’ finale.

Brahms ’ fourth was his final symphony, and its four movements balance the dramatic and thoughtful sides of the composer’s character. The finale is a masterly set of variations on a theme by Bach.
