President's Message Believe! Achieve! Receive!

First of all my sincere gratitude to all the family members of Anuradhapura Toastmasters for electing this executive committee including my self to serve the TM year 2018/19 and to help us tremendously to organize the Installation ceremony in such a grand style. I should thank all the past and present district officers, friends from other Toastmasters clubs and the well-wishers who grace the occasion and who gave the blessings through many ways.

As the executive committee, the theme we selected for this TM year is “Believe! Achieve!

Receive!” “Believe”. Yes, I strongly believe the members of this wonderful family of Anuradhapura Toastmasters. Each and every member will be made sure to get the output from their activities. “Achieve”, the second word I want to emphasize. I am certain, we can do better because I have faith in this team we have. The achievements of members plus quality of the club will “Receive” the recognition. The 3rd word I want to tell you all.

First of all we need to believe ourselves strongly. The belief doesn’t worth alone if the action is missing. We need to transform the belief into action. We cannot make alone, but it is through your support, critics and encouragements that we shall have something to do together.

Wish you all a fruitful TM year 2018/19.

Editor's Note Opportunities Knock When an opportunity knocks your door, you can do three things. First thing, you can open the door which means taking the opportunity. Second thing is, you can leave it without taking the opportunity. You can keep the opportunity for a certain time period with you as the 3rd option. So, when I was offered the role of the editor of the club newsletter, I decided to take it by following the quote by Sir Richard Branson. “ If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity, but you are not sure you can do it, say yes.

Then learn how to do it later. “ – Richard Branson I also didn’t know what to do with club newsletter editors’ role until I was offered that. But I felt like it’ll be an amazing opportunity to serve the club. When I was appointed, I didn’t think that it’ll be a new exposure in my journey as a Toastmaster.

The interview I had with a world class speaker, Sherrie Su was a great opportunity. As it was just few days after the Toastmasters International convention, I highly appreciate her time as she gave when conducting this interview. Also, I should thank all the club members of my Anuradhapura Toastmasters family for the given support in different ways. I hope this newsletter is consisted with valuable articles to improve your personal and professional lives!

In your life also, opportunities will knock your door. Make sure you are taking the right opportunity. It will take you to beautiful destinations! All the best!

Area Director Writes...

Are you a Real Toastmaster?

Each and every human has different physical and emotional built. It includes various ways of thinking, opinions and views. You are unique. You are a unique fingerprint with a special DNA. So, do you really do unique for the world which they can feel that you are unique? If you want to become a real toastmaster; be unique, be different and be special. It is not about others feel that you are special. You have to feel that you are not normal.

Let me discuss with you three main points to be a real, special toastmaster.

1. Have faith in their beliefs It's a mix of a lot of things, but first and foremost it's about having faith in your beliefs. You can't expect others to consider you, as a leader unless you have solid faith in your ideas. And once it's there, you build on it by being a good communicator, listening to others, setting examples and by putting your best foot forward and not giving up. Leadership is all about being passionate about what you do, and having confidence in yourself and your followers whom you have to motivate and inspire.

2. Make the hard choice Great leaders make hard choices and self-sacrifice in order to enhance the lives of others around them. Each of us have a family. Sometimes we miss them when we execute the work we are assigned. That is the hard choice. Being a real toastmaster take that challenge but think what are we working for? Always remember hard choices may not be popular at all. And it doesn’t matter as long as you do the correct thing.

3. Know that the people are the key to success A great Toastmaster understands that it is the people they lead that ultimately determine the success or failure of any venture. They surround themselves with great people that they can cultivate into a team of competent, confident individuals who can work well as a team. Then they have the ability to guide this team towards a well-defined vision by clearly communicating short and long terms goals, inspiring confidence, trust among colleagues, and influencing common efforts through character rather than by a position of authority. Ultimately, a great leader creates and nurtures other leaders.

4. Push people to be their best Great Toastmasters have clarity of purpose and are great at articulating their beliefs. I aspire to be the kind of leader that pushes people to be the very best they can be but still make people feel safe because it starts with the heart.

5. Do not lead by force A great toastmasters do not lead by forcing people to follow. Instead, a great leader motivates people. They encourage others to follow them. They also lead by example, which few leaders do today.

Being an effective leader requires constant focus, perseverance and building a team that is accountable and designed to get results. Without the team there can be no real leadership.

These five unique perspectives provide great insight while also validating certain commonalities to make you a real toastmaster.

Many of us in leadership or management positions know what we need to do to be better leaders but sometimes we fail to act. A great leader requires constant personal and professional development, regular transparent feedback from the team, self-reflection and taking action on feedback received. Great leaders are rarely satisfied with their performance.

Simply real toastmasters don’t bother about the quantity. They believe the quality.

INSTALLATION 2018 Believe | Achieve | Receive On 6th of July 2018 Anuradhapura Toastmasters Club welcome new TM year with elegant Installation ceremony which had stolen everyone's heart. It was 7th Installation of the club. The specialty of the event is the theme we used.

"Lotus" which symbolize the purity and theme color was lotus pink. Our slogan was "Believe, Achieve Receive" It wasn't an ordinary Installation Ceremony but it provided the platform to set side by side with other club members from lot of clubs across the country.The new executive committee for TM year 2018/19 was installed on that day and it was our pleasure to share our happiness with people who helped us to become Bronze Club of District 82.

From this issue you are going to meet such a wonderful soul. She is an English speaking Trainer & Public Speaking Coach. She joined Tianjin No.1 Toastmasters Club in 2011. She was the President of Tianjin No.1 Toastmasters Club from July 2015 to June 2016. She was the district 85 champion of 2015 & 2016 & placed second at the semifinals of International speech contest at the international conventions held in Las Vegas, USA and Washington D.C, USA respectively. She’s the champion of Mandarin Humorous speech contest District 88 in October,2017. In August 25th, 2018 she became the first runner up of World Championship of Public Speaking at the

How do you feel about the achievement and the Toastmasters journey, you came so far?

I just feel so blessed and loved. I worked hard but right before I got on the stage. I didn’t think about the result. I just want to talk to people and help them. I didn’t expect to win, so I am very excited and very grateful now.

As I got to know that you didn't know English before 8 years back & as you aren't a native speaker, what was the secret behind you to be a champion speaker apart from the toastmasters?

Just keep practicing. I spent lot of time working on my English.

What motivates you to learn English & join toastmasters?

Ten years ago, when I was a college student, I went to the Great Wall of China. One day I saw a foreigner there. I wanted to say "Hi" but I struggled for several minutes and couldn’t say a single English word. So I turned around and escaped. I made up my mind to practice spoken English and to visit different places and communicate with different people all over the world. After I graduated from the college, I didn’t have many friends and I didn’t want to give up learning. So, I came and joined Toastmasters.

As you believe, how to be a champion in public speaking?

I don’t think the purpose of public speaking should be “becoming a champion”. When we help others, touch hearts, and make them change, we become a champion, with a trophy or not. I also believe if you want to achieve a goal, there are three easy but extremely difficult things you need to do.

I. Believe you can do it.

II. Do it.

III. Keep doing it

What are your future plans? Will you compete again?

My next goal is to deliver a successful keynote speech in another country. I hope to become an inspirational speaker and a professional coach. I will keep challenging myself to become a better speaker, to help and encourage more people in the world to follow their dreams. I know I still have so many things to learn. I will not compete next year, but I think I will compete again when I am ready.

Joint Meeting

Jaffna + Anuradhapura

Members of Anuradhapura Toastmasters Club (ATMC) visited Jaffna on 05th August and had a Joint meeting with Jaffna Toastmasters (JTMC) at Euroville Guest House, Point Pedro Road. The meeting started at 3.00 pm. Members from both clubs played club roles and did speeches.

President of JTMC started the meeting by welcoming members of ATMC and JTMC. TM Ruban and TM Duglas from JTMC delivered their projects in Pathways and TM Nishamani and TM Rifnaz from ATMC did Pathways project 2 and ACB 7 speeches respectively. Theses speeches were evaluated by TM Lalani, TM Sanjeewani, TM Jiyanthiran and TM Paul.

TM Sanjeevraj conducted the Table Topic session. It was very exciting and enjoyable. Table topic speeches were evaluated

by TM Tharaka and TM Rifnaz . TM Thinusha was the Grammarian. TM Tharaka played the role of General Evaluator. At the end President of ATMC TM Rifnaz thanked all members of JTMC.

OFFICER TRAINING OTP PROGRAM Training of newly appointed Club Officers and their shadows is a critical factor for the success of any Toastmasters club. When the club officers are well-trained the club members are better served, leads to a quality club experience and increases member retention.

The club officer training program of the Division H of District 82, Toastmasters International for the first half of the Toastmasters year 2018/2019, was held on 23rd August 2018 at Kurunegala with the participation of District trio of District 82, Division Director and all Area Directors of Division H. The program was conducted as two sessions which was started at 9.30 AM. District Director of Division H welcome all the participants to the program and then the Area Directors were installed by the District Director of District 82. Then education sessions were conducted by Zainudeen ,DTM, TM Sarmaa Mahalingam, Suganthi Periasamy ,DTM, TM Gamini Senanayake & Munawwara ,DTM. In the afternoon session, relevant club officers were divided into groups and a detailed training sessions were conducted by explaining their roles and responsibilities in the club and the way to success the club meetings serving optimally in their appointed roles.

The training session was conducted successfully.

In overall this club officer training program was an excellent opportunity to get the club officers aware and trained on their specific club roles.

NEXT TO HEAVEN

Indeed a Heavenly Experience June 3rd of 2018, was a red letter day in my Toastmasters journey.

Next to heaven was indeed a heavenly journey filled with the excitement and joy. Division A of District 82 outdoor get together took place on that day and it was a happy union. For me, it was a novel experience. A nice get away from our busy schedules and finding the time to surround ourselves with fun and friends.

The event was held at the Club Palm Bay hotel in Marawila. The location was exquisite with a breathtaking view of the sea. But it was the crowd, which made the whole experience more memorable.

Initially, we started our day with fun activities. We were grouped into 4 teams and challenges were given to be completed within a time limit. All the challenges were fun and lovely and it really helped us to get to know members from other clubs. And Those challenges helped relax and rejoice in our minds. Being a novice member to

Toastmasters, it helped me to get to know many other distinguished members of the fraternity. After the challenging sessions, a delicious meal had been served to us.

We enjoyed our meal in the cool breeze coming from the sea. After the lunch, we engaged ourselves in playing snooker, badminton and water polo in the pool. Relaxing in the pool surrounded by beautiful sceneries was really something you could not have in your day to day life. Therefore we were lucky enough to experience it. We were thriving upon all the offering the heaven could offer.

The whole day was a journey to remember, another red letter day in my life with everlasting lovely memories.

It was a definite journey, next to heaven. Even the flashbacks of the events bring back fun memories and looking forward to another trip to heaven.

TLI has reached our door steps There were days which outstation clubs like us had to pack up things early in the morning and travel to colombo for the participation of TLI events. That practice totally changes with the new attempt taken by the District trio. Now TLI is reaching our door steps not with empty hands but with some super duper specialists.

On 4th August 2018, the TLI event for two clubs, Anuradhapura TMC and Kekirawa TMC in area H3 was conducted at LG Maha Gedara Reception Hall, Kekirawa. The event was comprised with 5 sessions. TLI has selected well experienced and well trained resource persons to give the best for participants. This became a fantastic learning spring to existing members as well as prospective members.

Contest Management, JTP and CJTP session was conducted by DTM Piyakara Jayarathna and audience were actively participated by asking lot of questions. The second session was emergence humorous and it was conducted by TM Sudath Fernando. As usually he did not forget to entertain the audience while sharing his experiences by being a humorous contestant several times.

Emergence – Evaluation session was conducted by TM Padmajith Jinadasa. He trained audience not only to evaluate speakers but to evaluate evaluators by giving chances to audience. 4th session was New Member Orientation and it was conducted by TM Tharaka Amarasena. It was valuable not only for new members but for existing members to rediscover and redefine their selves. The last but not the least session was Effective Club Meetings which was conducted by TM Hingston Lovell. He suggested many more creative ways to organize the club environment friendly for members and guests.

I am delightful to announce that we have gained maximum benefit from time and money we had committed. I believe this valuable education program has probably inspired and encouraged our club members to reach their greater heights.

PRESIDENT'S DISTINGUISHED CLUB First time in our club history, we were able to achieve all 10 DCP points within 8 months. It's a great achievement by our Anuradhapura Toastmasters Club family with dedication, team work and commitment. We were able to become 7th club to achieve president's Distinguished status among 244 active TM clubs in District 82. GOLDEN GAVEL AWARD

We were able to win the Bronze Club award (fourth best club) among 238 clubs in District 82. It was really a proud moment for us because being a community club bit far away from Colombo managed to place within top 5 clubs of D82.

We are proud that we were able to achieve the Golden Gavel award for the first time in our six years club history. We achieved 96 points in Club Quality Avenue (CQA) & 89 points in Club Engagement Avenue (CEA)

Art of Presentation OTP Can you remember the last memorable presentation you witnessed? Unfortunately many presentations are forgettable. We come across to do presentations frequently. Are we delivering them effectively? Are we delivering them purposefully? Are our audience enjoying? Most of the time, answer for the questions are NO. Let’s talk about some insights about how to deliver an effective presentation. Giving a presentation has two parts; preparation & delivery.

Preparation 1. Research the topic Because a presenter is coming in front of the audience as he/she is going to tell something that most of the audience don’t know. So the presenter should sound be like an expert in that particular area.

2. Understanding the audience.

Usually people do a mistake. People think that they can’t deliver a presentation about nuclear science to the students of grade five. No it is not. Still we can present, but we should know how we are going to present.

3. Plan your time limit.

It doesn’t matter whether it is half an hour or ten minutes presentation. The closer your presentation is to meeting that time limit, you'll be more relaxed about presenting your material, and the better your presentation skills will be.

4. Proper use of technology.

This is not only about presentation software like power point. It can be a projector, a video, music or any other machines. So, if you decide to use technology, make sure that it helps you engage your audience.

5. Structure of the presentation.

Though you can have room for creativity when creating a presentation, most presentations, just like most essays, typically follow a similar structure; an attractive opening, informative body and a thundering conclusion.

6. Practice, practice and practice.

If you want to improve your presentation skills, then one of the best things you can do is to practice your presentation.

You can practice it in front of the mirror, practice it in the shower, and practice it in front of your close friends or family members

Delivery 1. Relax yourself.

You can have a deep breath, and can walk around or even you can drink some water then the vocal chords can be lubricated. If you want to relax, then you have to prepare well in advance.

2. Fake confidence.

It's totally fine to feel nervous, but you don't have to act that way. The more confident you act, the more confident you will feel. This doesn't mean that you need to act arrogant.

Try to calm yourself and remind yourself that what you're doing is usual.

3. Engage with your audience.

Don't act like there's a wall between you and your audience. Talk directly to them, not at them or at the back wall, but to your audience.

4. Mind the body language.

Stand up straight and face the audience completely. Move your hands as you speak. For an example try calmly gesturing with your palm out when you make a point. If you describe a shape, draw it in the air with your hands.

5. Treat your presentation as a story.

To get your audience's interest you'll need to connect them with the material on an emotional level and the best way to do that is to think of your presentation like a story you're telling.

New Member Experience Busy life with lots of challenges If you miss something you won’t have time to correct it because time runs faster, it is faster than you think.

I am A.M.C.T.K Attanayake, Structural Engineer who works in Road Development Authority. One day I had to do a speech in front of professionals. I prepared well for the speech and wrote everything in several papers with big letters. At my turn, I began to read what I wrote in the paper.

All of a sudden I missed something I have mistakenly placed page no 3 at page no 2 position. I was nervous for sometimes, I had to find the relevant page in front of the audience with shivering hands.

Fortunately, I could manage that situation without much trouble.

Eng. Sujith and Eng. Lalani suggested me to join Toastmasters. By attending to several educational meetings I realized that we can improve not only English, but especially the ability to talk in front of audience.

We can present fantastic ideas and enjoy laughing with others without any restriction. If a presenter makes a mistake, other Toastmasters correct it in a friendly manner.

Therefore, with this friendly environment if anyone participates in this club for the first time he will continue his career with the club and gain success in his professional life.

Learning meeting procedures is the next important part of this club.

It improves the ability to manage meeting

procedures by taking responsibility as General Evaluator, Ah Counter, Timer, Grammarian & etc.

Prepared speeches standardize Toastmasters by completing several projects to complete a path. Therefore, I propose the Toastmasters club is the best way to improve talents and become successful professionals in their discipline.

Further, we can have more friends in different disciplines that also help us to build up our personality as well as the interrelation with different disciplines.

I wish all the best to the Anuradhapura Toastmasters Club and wish to have a bright future with Toastmasters.

New Member Experience

Family with same flesh & blood During my undergraduate period, one day I heard the word call ‘Toastmasters’.

Though it was the final year in my university life I felt like, I wanted to join this club and be a part of it. So I started to search, what this Toastmasters is? Why it matters to me? How to be a part of it? Where can I find it?

I had a keen demand to join a club and gain new experience as I was a person who always willing to have novel experience. Suddenly, one day, I had seen Anuradhapura Toastmasters club on social media for my luck by chance. I felt like, this club is a blue moon for me.

As I can remember the very first day of my visit to the club, it was an experience which made a footprint in my life pathway. All the members had warmly welcomed me.

I felt like, they’ve put a red carpet for me. They encouraged me to perform though I was new and tempered with nervousness. They talked with me in a very friendly manner where I felt like they are not new to me anymore. All those members showed me how little things matters to a person in their own life. I assume English is just not a language, it as a chain of nodules where we all get connected. Anuradhapura toastmasters club has proven it for me at many times.

Now I think I am a force to be reckoned with anyone. Today I can proudly say, we are just like a family with the same flesh and blood.

Journey to Vadamarachchi

Vadamarachchi is one of the three historic regions of Jaffna peninsula in northern Sri Lanka. It was a nice experience, visiting Vadamarachchi Toastmasters Club educational meeting during last month. The educational meeting was in a high standard in terms of quality.

There were three members participated from our club including myself, TM Tharaka & TM Rifnaz for the meeting.

The first impression was superb, because though we were guests, we didn’t feel so. Also, I’ve noticed certain things that we can learn from them.

One learning is, they print the ‘word of the day’ on the other side of the meeting agenda. The importance of that is, collection of ‘word of the day’ documents will enhance the vocabulary of each member. Another thing that I’ve observed was they offer a certificate for the ‘Best Speaker’ and for the ‘Best Table Topics Speaker’ of the meeting with their written names. It’s a good motivational factor because that’ll automatically increase the quality of speeches.

With those learnings, wishing them all the best & thanking them for the wonderful hospitality we came back. As a toastmaster, it was another unforgettable educational meeting & a journey in my life.

Pathways Learning Experience

In 2010 Toastmasters Pathways education program was official launched without deteriorating to the quality of current educational Program. Since then many more chapters were added to the Pathways legend. Pathways learning experience is an exciting, flexible and interactive way to develop personal skills of the members. However Pathways Education Program (PEP) was introduced to the Sri Lanka recently as more advance and improved version of existing education program.

As it is a novel concept, its adoption rate by the members specially who already involved with conventional education program is very law. Comments received through the discussions held with several toastmasters ranging from very experienced to new members revealed that their awareness on this new education program was not at satisfactory level. Therefore as Anuradhapura Toastmasters Club invited to TM Chandana Kumara to conduct an education program on Pathways education program at Kakirawa and Anuradhapura Toastmasters joint meeting held on 19th August 2018.

During his session he explained about the reason and story behind the emergence of PEP, specific objectives of PEP, how to enroll for the PEP through base camp, potential role of base camp, continuing the pathway journey with different projects, receiving maximum benefits from online teaching materials, requirements need to complete different levels in PEP and rewarding procedure of PEP. Finally, TM Chandana conducted an interactive discussion with the members of both Toastmasters clubs in order to clarify all the doubts regarding the new education program. TM Chandana was successfully aligned his educations session with the expected objectives of the Anuradhapura Toastmasters club.
