THE BADGER
The Badger is a fierce animal, very much respected and honored both in Northern American Native traditions and in European Celtic ones.
A badger will not let go and will continue tenaciously to look for another way to tackle his/her goal, just like a good healer will not let go of his/her search until the best solution is found for the person in need. Badgers have their homes underground, so that they can go to the roots of things, the good healer does the same and keeps looking until she/he can find the most profound reason for a dis-ease or a psychological issue.
We use the term healer in the very broad sense of somebody who takes care of another person, be it a MD, a nurse, a psychotherapist, a physiotherapist, a masseuse, a spiritual healer. Whenever there is a person in need and somebody who takes care of her/him, that is a healer.
Sometimes the need is subtler and more profound than a simple medical intervention, the human touch is needed and it really is the Panacea that cures all diseases.
We believe all artistic expressions in their beauty, science for everyday life, spirituality, philosophy, food and the healing arts are beneficial to restoring that balance, health and sense of worth that each and every human being deserves.
We offer you THE BADGER, the persistent healer, all the articles come from experts in different fields, each person has his/her own idea of what a balanced life is, they are here to pass on information, give inspiration, receive your comments, suggestions, contributions.
Each human being holds in his/her hands at least one of the keys, let's continue our quest!

THE CALL OF THE SIRENS
Antonella Vicini
Is the call of the Sirens still audible?
What were they singing about?
What was their poetry about?
Right now, all around our beloved Earth, we hear many sirens pushing us to war!
I believe the ancient message was not about war, but about the long lost and forgotten knowledge we all shared.
As sentient beings we have been here for a very short time, and we have behaved atrociously towards each other. It is time to re-direct our energies as wise (?), enlightened (?)and loving beings to rebuild, re-store, and re-connect beyond boundaries and artificial borders.
If we still believe in our humanity, this is the time to re- affirm and choose the best in our human nature by embracing what is different from us and creating bridges of light instead of concrete walls.
The ancient stories are ambiguous and unclear about the messages carried by the sirens, mostly because they were identified as female beings, so that (for the ancient patriarchal mind) they were not to be trusted to begin with. Or perhaps the ambiguity could lead us to reflect more about their primeval songs and point the way for non-univocal interpretations.
The world we experience now is so charged with messages, meanings, demands, requests and obligations that taking time to listen to an ancient sound and its possible multiple meanings seem absurd and counter intuitive, yet it is time to do so, if we want to remain present to our selves and in touch with the deepest in us.
That’s why THE BADGER keeps opening its doors to more people and views of life.

TRANSFORMATION
Lida Lodi Perry
In the autumn of my life, I am more aware of who I have become, and lately I have reflected on how I have changed.
The choices I have made in my life and the way I have met change, almost always involved major turning points.
All my life experiences have transformed, through the years, the way I think, and of how the values I once held as fundamental have gradually moved within my hierarchy of priorities. Those beliefs had offered stability, a measure of control, and had served as the foundation for some of my choices.
But in the past decade everything seems to have been shifting within.
Recently I read the following piece, that reflected my experience and powerfully showed how life can lead us through deep transformation, quietly bringing us to a clearer understanding of our needs or rather, the needs of our soul.
“I’ve counted my years and realized that I have less time left to live from here on out than I’ve lived so far. I feel like that child that has been given a bag of sweets, the first ones he eats very quickly, but when realizes there are only a few left, then he begins to savor them intensely. I no longer have time I don’t have time to put up with absurd people who, despite their age, haven’t grown up. I can no longer tolerate manipulators and opportunists. I’m annoyed by envious people who try to discredit those who are more capable I want what’s essential, because my soul is in a hurry now. I don’t have many pages left in the book. I want to live alongside people who are human very human……….
……. I want to surround myself with people who know how to touch the heart, with people whose hard knocks have taught me to grow through gentle touches of the soul. Yes, I’m in a hurry… to live with the intensity that only maturity can provide. I don’t intend to waste any of the sweets that remain. I’m sure they’ll be exquisite, even more so than the ones I’ve eaten so far. My goal is to reach the end in peace and satisfied with my loved ones and with my conscience. I hope yours is too, because one way or another, you’ll get there.”
Mario de Andrade
From “The Precious Time of Mature People”(FB Il Segnalibro)
I think of my community, and generally I see an emotional and cultural desert. There are few people around me that are willing to share their thoughts, their beliefs, to have a meaningful conversation, to dare to disagree and to really listen. I hold on to the few that understand and the few that have different points of view and still hold our friendship as precious.
Much as I try, I cannot avoid being exposed to local and world news. What I see and hear is the decline, unraveling, and disruption of many structures that once supported modern life. Every day, someone in power crosses the lines meant to protect our values and rights, and I find myself wondering how this can be happening.
Lately I have been reading “The History of the Roman Empire” by an Italian writer that loved History. It was at times interesting and at times difficult to navigate through the many dynasties, wars and conspiracies. Yet across the many chapters and events, one theme became clear: as the Romans grew prosperous, they turned toward gold and material wealth and away from the worship of the gods. In doing so, they lost their connection to the transcendent.
Then began the process of decay and disruption that brought the glorious legacy of the Roman Empire to an end with the invasion of barbarian tribes from the north and east.
I can’t help but wonder if the America’s legacy in the modern world is being disrupted, a Deja Vue of the early history of civilization and it’s decline.
I imagine, if I step back and look at the bigger picture, I might perceive a deeper plan. Perhaps the fall of the old system is necessary to create a new order that is more humane. How can we support this transformation?
My response and commitment are to renew and deepen my spiritual life, to choose kindness, to listen generously, and to be grateful for our differences, which enrich my life and give it greater meaning.

XII BOOK OF THE ODYSSEY BY HOMER
“Come here, renowned Odysseus, great pride of the Achaeans, stop your ship and listen to our voice. No one has ever passed this way in his black ship until he has heard the sweet sound that comes from our lips; then he departs, rejoicing and knowing more."

SIRENE Giuseppe Ungaretti (1928)
Funesto spirito
Che accendi e turbi amore,
Affine io torni senza requie all’alto
Con impazienza le apparenze muti,
E già, prima ch’io giunga a qualche meta,
Non ancora deluso
M’avvinci ad altro sogno.
Uguale a un mare che irrequieto e blando
Da lungi porga e celi
Un’isola fatale,
Con varietà d’inganni
Accompagni chi non dispera, a morte.
SIRENS
O fatal spirit
That kindles and disturbs love,
So that I may return restlessly to the heights
With impatience you change appearances, And already, before I reach any goal,
Not yet disappointed
I cling to another dream.
Like a sea that, restless and gentle
From afar, offers and conceals
A fatal island,
With a variety of deceptions
You accompany those who do not despair to death.

SIREN SONG Margaret Atwood
This is the one song everyone would like to learn: the song that is irresistible: the song that forces men to leap overboard in squadrons even though they see the beached skulls the song nobody knows because anyone who has heard it is dead, and the others can't remember. Shall I tell you the secret and if I do, will you get me out of this bird suit? I don't enjoy it here squatting on this island looking picturesque and mythical with these two feathery maniacs, I don't enjoy singing this trio, fatal and valuable. I will tell the secret to you, to you, only to you.
Come closer. This song is a cry for help: Help me!
Only you, only you can, you are unique at last. Alas it is a boring song but it works every time.

VOICES FROM THE STARS Cleansing Inner Space
Laura Bottagisio
Voluntarily giving ourselves the Order to cleanse inner space, now filled to the brim with useless junk devoid of any vital movement and unable to provide essential nourishment for the Soul, this is now the supreme and fundamental desire of the Heart.
This passage from death to life is colored by fiery thoughts bearing new and fertile ideas that reflect etheric sparks, charged with innovative and creative potential for the new Aquarian era.
Uranus, that has just entered Gemini, delivers this precious message to convince us to activate the use of our 'inner technology' that can transcend three-dimensional space-time in a nanosecond. With our “inner technology” we can reach more rarefied and subtle dimensional platforms, where new ideas are waiting to be grasped by enlightened minds.
The twins Castor and Pollux, thanks to the presence of Uranus, align to activate the connection between heaven and earth. In the myth, upon Castor's death, Pollux shared his immortality with him, allowing them to live alternating between Olympus and the Underworld.
There are two versions of the same reality: the formal version and the so-called 'esoteric' version:
The first is based solely on visible form, therefore it fragments and lacks an origin. The second is rooted in perfect connection with the flowing Wave of life. It imparts to reality itself the depth needed to comprehend the entire design of the eternal law of cause and effect, which acts coherently to balance what is no longer in balance.
Therefore, by clearing our inner space, we begin to perceive how the quality of our mental-emotional strength can create formal reality and lead us either towards the limiting constraint of matter alone, or towards a life of events rich in beauty and love.
By reuniting our two halves, mortal and immortal, we collaborate with those working to restore harmony from the now rampant and unstoppable chaos we are experiencing now.
Let’s enjoy our lives!

THE LIE ABOUT FINDING YOURSELF
Annarita Levanti
There is a lie we have been told so many times that now we believe it is the truth.
This lie is that somewhere inside us, covered by layers of habits, roles and noise, there is an authentic self, waiting to be discovered, like a treasure hidden in a safe place, asking us to be brave enough to find it. It isn't true.
The “self” – let’s call it “identity” – is not something we reach once and then magically live with it forever.
Identity is a practice we choose consciously, every day.
But let’s go one step at a time.
Society constantly repeats to us phrases like: “find yourself”, “find your voice”, “find who you truly are”, “come back home to yourself”. This language presupposes that the true self already exists, somewhere in a safe place and that our task is simply to go and collect it.
And we all go on this quest, convinced that this is the reason why we are on this planet.
But what happens every time you finally think you are getting close to the person you are supposed to be? Life moves the goalpost and throws a new challenge at you that suddenly asks for an upgraded version of you. Oh c’mon!
This happened to me more than once.
I thought I was about to find my real self, and life moved the goalpost. Again and again!
And I did what most of us do in similar circumstances: I went looking for the next version of myself. More grounded, more confident, more “me”, the one who would finally be enough. I went on and on, thinking –wrongly – that the next one would be the final one.
The infinite chase.
And you? Is there a definitive version of yourself you are still chasing, thinking it will be the final one?
One day, too exhausted from collecting failures, I decided to stop looking for my hidden identity.
Yes, I gave up.
And in that surrender, I finally saw something. For years, I had not been able to recognise the person I saw reflected in the mirror; she didn’t match any version of me I recognised. It was as if my identity had kept evolving, growing and changing.
Like a magnificent garden that grows without a gardener.
So, I asked myself why. And I finally understood: my own choices, made out of habit, were choosing for me, without asking for my opinion or permission.
In that moment, I changed my question: no longer "who am I supposed to be", but "who am I already, that I'm not allowing to flourish?"
That question is what showed me the truth I had been missing. Our identity is not hidden inside us; it is shaped moment by moment by our daily choices. And most of the time, we are not even aware of those choices, because people, circumstances, our own rules, stories, fears, and expectations pressurise us.
In fact, if we look closely, every day we go through a series of choices so habitual they feel like our personality, so repeated they feel like our destiny.
The real change happens when we shape our identity through gestures we can choose to repeat differently, instead of chasing an ideal self, hidden somewhere.
This conscious choice requires awareness. For example, awareness of how we react when we are under pressure. What we choose to say, or not to say. How we treat our body on ordinary days.
Identity is built in the everyday because the everyday is where we actually exist.
Since I stopped searching and started consciously choosing the identity I want to live each day, I am freer from the habit of choosing without noticing.
I am not free from mistakes yet (and I will never be!).

I choose.
Sometimes I make the right decision. Sometimes I choose the wrong one. And I totally take responsibility for it in both cases. The choice is mine; it is no longer just the result of external pressures.
Maybe there is an even better question: “What are the choices I am making today and who am I becoming through them?”
This is not a question you answer only once. It’s a question that we all need to repeat every morning, even if in the past you have made a wrong choice.
Identity is not a treasure to be discovered. It’s a daily practice of consciously choosing, done by someone who gives herself permission to get things wrong, learn and make a new, different decision the day after.
So, now it’s your turn: are you ready to become the gardener of your own identity?
If yes, what is one different choice you are going to make today?

AGEING IS AN ADVENTURE
Laura Cuttica Talice
Anyone who says getting old is bad has lived a bad life! Getting old is an adventure, just like all of life is an adventure.
To truly understand life, you need an adventurous spirit:
• sometimes as a pioneer,
• sometimes as a player,
• sometimes as a playboy or playgirl,
• sometimes as an actor,
• sometimes as a comedian,
• sometimes as a sage,
• sometimes as a madman…
• and many other times in a thousand other ways.
Life shouldn't be boring; life flows like a river:
• At its source, it is roaring, like a stream that becomes a torrent,
• then it encounters rapids and whirlpools,
• it swells because it encounters tributaries,
• then it flows calmly, but sometimes it overflows,
• until it reaches the sea, advancing in different ways:
through swampy pitfalls, or with a broad, liberating, contented approach.
In short, life flows around us in a thousand ways, and they are all metaphors that concern us.
We must accept them, understand them, and use them to change.
Always change. And that's beautiful!
After all, isn't the nature around us constantly changing?

The Secret of Long Life
The photo I posted above really struck me: it's beautiful. This handsome, wrinkle-free old man, toasting life on his 105th birthday, isn't he a sweetheart? Yet, his life hasn't been easy.
• He was born poor, with little education, but with great intelligence.
• He never gave up, he worked tirelessly.
• He travelled the world to work, even very hard, because in his youth there was nothing comfortable.
• Then he returned to his village, to end his very intense life.
But what secret has he discovered? We read it in his smile, in the story of his life.
His secret was:
• courage,
• the desire to make his dreams come true,
• the determination to succeed,
• a love of work.
He lived in hard times with few comforts and a lot of hard work, but this didn’t break him. Therefore his secret was to love what he was doing and having the courage to face the unknown. He is an example of strength and courage.

Another shining example: this smiling 105-year-old lady is beautiful! She also hasn't had an easy life:
• She faced a lot of hardship in difficult times,
• She lived through two wars,
• She overcame many hardships,
• She experienced the great pain of outliving several children who passed away before her. And yet, she had the courage to move forward, to live her life to the fullest.
At 105, she still embroiders without glasses and with a smile, because she loves to embroider. For her, embroidery has always been a pastime, an art that fulfilled her, compared to the other jobs she had always done, like many women of her time.
She too has found in the work and delicacy of embroidery a fulfillment of her abilities.
The Secret of a Long and Peaceful Life
For her too, the secret is:
• Loving work to love life,
• Accepting what happens,
• Moving forward with courage, without complaining.

This ninety-year-old is beautiful and very elegant, wearing trendy fashion, and above all, she's smiling!
These three people, who don't know each other at all, belong to the same race; they share wisdom!
The Secret of Aging
One can only hope to live like this, without aging. No matter how many years you live, you're alive.
I have deeply understood that you don't age when you have many interests that entertain you, but they are nothing compared to having plans. Planning is youth, because the plan, whatever it may be, contains feelings, sensations, values, enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the true anti-aging strategy. It's not the wrinkles that age or the body that transforms, because the external body is the shell of the soul that is ageless and nourished by light. We must understand this, ascend to this level to enjoy the passing of time, the lessons it brings us, the events it teaches us. If this harmony is achieved, then old age, pain, suffering, and hopelessness do not exist. Our food is curiosity; we want it to push us further, always beyond what seems difficult, ugly, or impossible. Any project is worth pursuing if it respects our dreams, values, and feelings.
An Inspired Journey
“My perspective now, as I enter the autumn of my life and have seen and understood so many things while living in the midst of the world, is that life is an inspired journey toward a goal. The goal is our destiny, but it is also the moment of farewell to enter the world of the spirit. Many encounters occur along the journey.
I am certain that life offers each person extraordinary moments to experience and remember. However, it is up to each individual to decide whether to accept them or not for a variety of reasons.
My view, based on the experiences I have lived over a long life and those I have heard in my chosen profession, is that we must always accept what life offers, even if it is absurd. Living life means gathering the flowers of experiences that are scattered throughout it; they become important memories and sources of inspiration.
I believe there is nothing sadder than regrets for not having memories, instead of unseen ones. If we simply meditate on the pleasant past, one memory brings with it another, so many extraordinary memories, even made up of small things, but which can be experienced in an extraordinary way. Living life and remembering it becomes a very personal reaction.
This is how a coach's creativity can delve into his client's memories for two valid reasons: one to help him build his life's purpose and the other to find his talents, those pearls forgotten in the depths of the memory bank.
People have a rich database and are not used to considering it or thinking of it. The coach becomes first the discoverer of talents and then the secretary to remind his client of them. It is a great satisfaction to make these discoveries and see and listen to the client in his in its joy of rediscovery, of the revelation it brings.
How can a true journey inspire new perspectives? Who has an image of how the world of their thoughts might be represented, especially if they are not positive?
I found inspiration for this concept on my trip to the Grand Canyon, a majestic spectacle of nature with its mysteries hidden in its bowels, little known and difficult to navigate.
I was inspired by observing its images, which change with the light filtering from above at different times of the day.
Thus I "saw" what exists in the human mind when thoughts are negative: dark, disturbing images, which overwhelm and instill worry, anxiety, fear.
However, the image and sensations change completely when thoughts are positive, when energy flows within the person and there is life and hope in their mind, like when sunlight filters into the Canyon, but at different times of the day, and the spectacle that appears is this:
The two photos below don’t need words and clearly show how it's possible to change one's point of view, perspective, and enthusiasm.
The coach can use images to make the words of the questions he asks more effective. He can use the evocative power of words that create emotions and expectations in describing the journey of life.
Life is beautifully represented with many metaphors related to travel, and I choose one, because it's beautiful to live like traveling if you have eyes to see, ears to listen, and perceptions to enjoy the present and all the daily presents that build the future and become a source of inspiration in immediately transforming themselves into the past.

Come with me, I'll take you to see incredible scenery unfolding along the road the car travels, a very long road without curves, two ribbons of perfect asphalt disappearing into the blue sky, because it's so long that its end can't be seen on the horizon, a journey that powerfully recalls the life of a person represented metaphorically in its events, encounters, facts with what I see on this journey toward a great goal, the silence of the Grand Canyon, the silence of our great goal. I see green prairies with solitary ranches lost in the greenery and herds of horses or cattle grazing lazily, active oil wells that look like living trees moving through the greenery, boundless spaces and gray mountains that can be glimpsed for miles and miles away.
Then the landscape changes, the state changes, and I encounter the desert where the land is uncultivated and the rains are scarce. Wild sage sprouts from the parched earth in endless expanses, red rocks in the distance, the encounter with the Navajo reservation that owns an immense territory, their humble homes, the peace chambers in every small hamlet where they go to sing and meditate, their jewelry that they sell along the road displayed in small huts, their horses and black cows with calves that graze freely in the desert among the low green bushes and small cacti.
Finally, the Grand Canyon appears to be changing in color, light, and shadow at different times of day.

Red rocks, purple rocks, yellow rocks, orange rocks, white rocks, dark green rocks, black rocks. Its immense absolute silence, the immense canyon, its water flowing downstream, the Rio Colorado, the green one, the earthy one, its tumultuous rapids, the sand of the narrow canyon, the underground one, the red ants, the sand-colored lizards, the deer, the squirrels, the immense spaces, the cliffs and the hills on the sand, endless plateaus, rocks that hide cliffs or plains where you emerge from underground caves and you expect the colorful and feathered Native Americans on horseback to appear on the tops of the plateau, the yellow and orange sand, so much, so much, the dry heat, the wind, the smell of the ancient, the fantasies of nature that shows faces sculpted in the sand petrified by time, the face of the devil, the lion, a human face, the bones, the spirals, the holes, the glimpses of light, the narrow passages, the earth that seems to swallow you, sharp rocks in the middle of the cliffs that they seem to await the eagle or the condor's rest, or ravines that perhaps hide the mountain lion, or flat, sun-drenched stones that host in their crevices the rattlesnake or the tarantula, and stillness, shadows, light, and infinity...
So much life hides in the silence and stillness. You feel at peace, but also observed by small or large eyes waiting for you to move away to remove your uncomfortable presence from that place.
Ancient spirits wandering through those spaces. Voices in the wind.
I turn to you, who are reading this, as a coach, to illuminate your inspired life, to give you meaning beyond time, where age is beyond belief and everything is possible. Be happy and filled with joy today to attract what you desire tomorrow:
"...enjoy this journey, to experience life as a place to have fun. The monsters you encounter are fake, emotions transform. Let go of anxiety and live each moment for what it wants to tell you. When you let go of anxiety and find your path, you don't age. When you return home, live what you've learned. You'll enjoy taking care of yourself, taking a little time every day to walk, meditate, treat yourself with the right food. Set yourself the goal of rebuilding yourself, of overcoming the pain you've endured. Think of an old song, sing it to yourself, it said...you'll come back to me because my only dream is you...you'll come back, you'll come back to my heart..."
This song can be the background music to your thoughts. For you, dear one, it will be an awakening, away from a boring life, towards life, the new life, as you were taught to live it. Make yourself beautiful, feel the air entering you, fresh and pure like your thoughts and emotions. They nourish you with life, newness, youth. Know how to recognize and remember them; they are beautiful, and even more so if you know how to enrich them with pleasant details.
Remove the excess that weighs you down, fill yourself with the immensity that surrounds you and lifts you up. Love is immense, you can relive it even if it's over and you can imagine it, see it in grand settings like in a movie but they are real in the way you experience them: the deserts, the plains, the oceans, the mountains, the cliffs, the blue sky, the dry air of a perpetual summer, the descent into the earth's meanders, where the play of light and the colors they generate make the descent intriguing, curious, full of expectations of further imaginative and colorful discoveries, the profiles of the rocks that look at you and escape you, everything is unreal and true, but also changeable and hidden.
This description corresponds to your encounters, to intriguing glances, to magical words heard and spoken, to experiences that have all given you something unusual and unrepeatable, colored in shades sometimes dark and painful, sometimes colorful and bright, to everyday events that have transformed into extraordinary ones thanks to your particular abilities or inspirations, to skills you've built over time, to wisdom you now recognize as having achieved by paying the right price for such an important goal.
If you have imagination, you see a thousand things; if you lack it, you're afraid. Remember to remember that you have what you need to live fulfilled: imagination, courage, youth to chase time and stop it in your mind and heart, and this will be your secret. I remind you to live a fulfilling life, no to the slavery of your phone or TV, no to negative thoughts, but breathe clean, pure air.
You too will discover, through experience, that the wonderful, yet no longer secret, secret of life is to build your happiness now with small and creative measures, because your happy vibrations will attract the goals you desire.
This thought is as wise as it is simple, yet it needs to be taught to be practiced and discovered to be truly yours.
The more you think about what you lack, the less you get it, because you are in an abundance of "scarcity." The more you think about the abundance of what you want, the more you abandon the scarcity of faith in yourself and your dreams, the more you enter into the true abundance of abundance!
In the midst of a world of madmen of which you are a part, knowing them as such is fun. Lighten your thoughts and detach yourself from what disturbs you, spend time with those who amuse you, and always start over.
There is no end or beginning, there is life that flows like a river. Find the words to "Moon River" and "Bend Down the River," they too will inspire you. That too is the story of change, of adventure, of losses, of knowing how to hold on to the essentials to start a new life. Make your life like a movie, because it is, make this motto of a brilliant director your own… “let yourself go…and above all do not think”

LATHE BIOSAS
ENTROPIA
This series of articles was originally about artists who chose to live in secluded places, far from the frenzy of big cities. The area where I live is ideal for that lifestyle: it is beautiful, rich in history, art, and good food, yet it has never been a major tourist destination.
That may be about to change, thanks to music!
Today, I want to write about two events that bring life to this little town each summer.
The first is called Entropia. Entropy is defined as a fundamental physical and thermodynamic property that measures the level of disorder, randomness, or unavailable energy in a closed system.
This year marks the 10th edition of Entropia, which began as a response to the grief of losing a dear friend too soon and has become a timeless tribute through art in many forms: music, painting, performance, food, and entertainment. It is both a deeply heartfelt commemoration and a lively three-night series of shows.

TUSCANIA SUMMER FESTIVAL
and more…
The second event has the potential to transform Tuscania’s cultural scene. The organization that brought us two weeks of daily concerts in 2025 will return this year for a two-month stay, from July to September.
The town will be peacefully filled with music students and their teachers. At the end of the Summer Academy, the best students from different musical disciplines will come together for a special performance.
This is only the beginning of a much larger project, which we will follow in future editions: the opening of a permanent music academy for people of all ages who want to learn an instrument or sing, either as soloists or in choirs.
I am delighted that these ancient stones will soon resonate with new people, young music lovers, and magnificent classical music from different eras.
Below are the short biographies of the creators of these events: two passionate music lovers, Chieko Hata and Stefano Palamidessi.
Chieko Hata is the President of CPD, the organization behind these events. A musician and concert guitarist, she has chosen to use her experience to support the development of new generations. Through musical education, Chieko promotes spaces for encounter, opportunity, and the future. Two years ago, she founded The Arts Crossroad APS not just an association, but an ongoing project dedicated to young people.
Stefano Palamidessi is the Eucational Director, he is an active musician, concert performer, and conservatory teacher. Stefano has spent more than forty years turning experience and vision into real opportunities for young people. The creator of numerous initiatives and former director of prestigious music academies, he considers this his most ambitious and representative project his true challenge.
They have used all their knowledge, experiences, and connections to create a magnificent set of opportunities for all the people in the area as well as further away.
This land of the Etruscans now resonate with more music and art than ever before, the ancient ones valued music and the arts, it is fitting that arts now return in great numbers.

WALKING AND LEARNING
MASTER ROADS:
A school project on the move
From Val d’Aosta to Calabria, from October to June, a full year on foot, walking also on the Franciscan path from Assisi to Rome. The school is informal in the approach, no books or written work, but they still follow the curriculum set by the schools the students will go back to, after passing an exam to test their preparation.
Besides teaching, the teachers/guides support the participants’ growth with life lessons that can be learnt along the way.
Teaching and learning while walking help the students to receive the information and make it theirs, in their bodies as well as their minds.
The students come from all over Italy, each one of them carries a backpack with their equipment to sleep, wash and live a very simple life, almost like pilgrims of knowledge and life. The interactive aspect of learning seems to be the key for their full participation in the experience.
From Strade Maestre, A School Year on the Move, by Marco Saverio Loperfido, 2026
Five boys and three girls, aged seventeen and eighteen. Four teachers and guides. Twelve Italian regions crossed and thirteen hundred kilometers traveled. A school curriculum to follow and thousands of meetings and outdoor lessons. Call it a dream or a folly, but the Strade Maestre adventure cannot leave anyone indifferent: it invites everyone not just those already involved in the world of education to a collective reflection on walking as a precious resource for learning.
"At the beginning, it was just a timid vision: a school as large as Italy, walking for an entire school year, free under the sky, immersed in the world. A class moving on foot, like the philosophers of old. The teachers as guides, educators and friends. The children as explorers of themselves. Lessons in cloisters, in shelters. Biology among the ferns, history in the squares where the events took place. We would sleep in hostels or in the homes of the villagers, where we would cook together; we would wait for those who were slower, sharing fears, kilometers, rain, silences, laughter. Through diary entries written at the end of a day's walk and the story of how it was possible to realize a project that seemed utopian. Marco Saverio Loperfido takes us inside his experience as a guide-teacher in the first year of Strade Maestre. And he shows us another possible way of teaching, where meaning, relationships, the body, slowness, wonder but above all, the children finally regain center stage.

The guides support the inner growth at a very important age, the constant contact with nature and their presence as mediators support the participants in their development as mature human beings, aware of their choices and open to ever changing conditions.
I look forward to Alessandro Pintus’ full story in the next volume of THE BADGER in December 2026.
I love the idea of teaching in nature, the few times I had the privilege of doing it, we had amazing experiences that I keep as precious memories of my work as teacher.

WITNESSING
In these pages you will find people who have chosen unusual life paths, their stories will supply keys to new horizons and possibilities. It is important to listen to these stories, young or old, we all carry experiences that can be shared around the fires of awareness; such was the ancient tradition, such is the goal of THE BADGER offering stories for our souls.
Aaron Hollander
I am very pleased and proud to introduce in this volume of THE BADGER, Aaron Hollander.
I was very lucky to have him in my Latin class back in 2001-2002 at SYA Viterbo. It was his curiosity about my studies that made it possible for me to teach Elements of Sanskrit and Classical India spirituality, as an elective, for all the years I taught at SYA, besides my main subjects, Latin and Greek. We never lost touch and, some years later, Aaron came to Assisi to dance the Sun Moon Dance that I had the honor to organize and chief at that time.
We met again very recently in my little town and have compared notes of the many years gone by. It has been a deep moment for me to hear from him all his wonderful discoveries since 2008.
Here below you can find an excerpt of our conversation.
AV: I am curious about your decision to spend one year in Italy. And what happened as a consequence in your life?
AH: Looking back now, the pivotal moment was a few years earlier, in eighth grade, when I began studying Latin at the same time that an inspired English teacher at my school had structured our literature curriculum around a semester-long immersion in Dante’s Inferno. Although the possibility of studying abroad in Italy was not on my radar at that point, the discovery of Latin and the extraordinary gift of close, slow reading in Dante change the course of my life. I had always loved science and nature as a kid, Jane Goodall was my hero whom I wanted to emulate! But it was in eighth grade that I first came to imagine myself becoming a teacher and a humanist above all. So two years later, when representatives from SYA came to my school to present about the existing study abroad options and the new program that was to launch the following year in Italy everything just felt like it came together: the chance to prioritize my studies in Latin, which by then was my favorite class, while also living in the land of Dante and soaking up the art, history, mythology, and food of a place that had fascinated me from afar for years.
AV: What are the experiences you had in Italy that made a strong impact and moved your life in new directions?
AH: There were so many experiences in Italy that I can say, now, moved my life in new directions. It’s easy to point to the visits to places of great power and deep history places like San Marco in Venice, or Mt. Etna in Sicily but ultimately these visits were less significant than the mundane, everyday immersion in the life of my Italian family. We lived a little further from Viterbo than many other families, in a suburb of Vitorchiano, so I had to be on a local train back home no later than 6 pm or so. As a result, I helped prepare and ate dinner with my family almost every single night; this, more than school, was where I really learned Italian, and where I came to adopt the rhythm of Italian life as my own. That experience of finding myself anew, or a new version of myself, helped me find confidence and curiosity about myself as much as about the world that opened up a great deal for me later on. The disorientation and reorientation of living abroad, this practice of discovering all that isn’t essential about how we assume we need to live, became a great joy, one that I would end up repeating by pursuing my master’s degree in Ireland and a Fulbright research fellowship in Cyprus some years later.
AV: Can you describe, briefly, your studies and what lead you to them? Can you describe your actual job today and how it reflects your deepest values?
AH: A definition of “vocation” that I first heard in high school and has stuck with me since, is “where your great skill and your great love meet the world’s great need.”
I had always loved literature, mythology, and art, and had always excelled in school, but beginning in college I found myself gravitating toward religious studies as a space where all these loves and skills came together with increasingly obvious public need. I had begun with a fairly straightforward series of courses in comparative religion, covering a lot of ground both culturally and historically. But the breakthrough came with a course called “Transforming Intractable Conflict,” in the Sociology department: it focused on the decades of political violence and religious animosity in Northern Ireland, and it really tuned me into the intersection of religious studies with peace & conflict studies. I took this lens with me to Ireland, where I completed a master’s degree in Ecumenical Studies, and then to the University of Chicago for a PhD in Theology.
Today, I have the profound good fortune to have a professional role that sits at the same intersection of love, skill, and needful intervention in urgent social problems. I work with the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement, a Roman Catholic religious order based just north of New York City, as the executive director of Graymoor Ecumenical & Interreligious Institute (GEII). GEII is a center for research, education, and peacebuilding dialogue, well connected with the academy, with interchurch networks, and with other NGOs dedicated to conflict transformation.
Our mission is rooted in St. Francis’ experience of being called by Christ in the derelict church of San Damiano: “Repair my house, which has fallen into ruin.” As an ecumenical metaphor, this San Damiano call stimulates the essential question at the heart of GEII’s work: What can we do, with what tools and which partners, about the broken joints and fraying integrity of our common home? In this reparative paradigm, the intricacies of intra-Christian reconciliation and interreligious hospitality are integrated with the broader urgencies of justice, peace, and the integrity of creation.
There is a straight line of connection and nourishment to directing a Franciscan peacebuilding center from being a student in Viterbo, half a world away from family and friends (and immersed among new family and new friends), discovering for myself how ancient history, medieval art, modern literature, and above all the religious imagination that threads through them all, still speak to the greatest existential questions of how to live humanely amid difference, fear, precarity, and suffering. Assisi is one of those places of transformative power that I have returned to again and again on a school visit with SYA; over the New Year’s holiday with my family that year, watching fireworks bloom over the vast, dark valley; to dance for three days on a wild and snowing hillside under Antonella’s guidance; for a cutting-edge ecclesiological conference with an academic network of which I’m now in leadership; on my honeymoon in Italy some years later; and now almost every year for retreat and respite while teaching in Graymoor’s summer course in Rome. I have repeatedly knelt beneath the San Damiano crucifix, now installed in the Basilica di Santa Chiara in Assisi, feeling some echo of that urgency with which St. Francis saw his own vocation unfold, from the quiet church to the busy roads, from the city to the wilderness, from Italy to the Middle East, and beyond. Whatever the future brings, I am reminded every time that I am where I belong for now.
As the Irish proverb has it:
“Where you heart lies, there your feet will lead you.”

CIRCLES OF DREAMERS
Antonella Vicini
To die, to sleep;
To sleep: Perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams May come.
William Shakespeare, Hamlet, Act 3, Scene1
You may wonder why there is such a lofty quote at the beginning of this article. I wanted to offer a different interpretation of these words, from a shamanist point of view.
When we talk about death we don’t point at the physical end of life, but the death of our old self, our old ways that need to be left behind when we want to dream ourselves anew.
Here below is the story of how Circles of Dreamers were created.
When you know it, you know it!
When something is right, deep down each one of us knows it and can choose what to do about it.
A few years ago, a new idea started to move around in my awareness, at first, it was just a whisper, then it became stronger, until this past cold season it blew into my life and became a reality.
I have always loved the infinite possibilities offered by dreams whether they are night or daydreams, totally asleep or superficially so; it is a gentle way for our deep inner universe to communicate with us and give us marvelous gifts of wisdom, if we have the courage and willingness to listen and observe without preconceived ideas.
The idea of Circles of Dreamers came to me from my own dreams: I have kept a dreaming journal for years and many of my projects have come through dreams. I was reflecting on the state of the world and suddenly realized that the experiences we have now are the result of some past dreams, so now it is time to dream new dreams and create a new reality.
All around us things are changing fast, sometimes we cannot comprehend or accept the changes, we can judge them and stay away from them, yet they are happening, so we can do something else: create the life we deserve and want and fill it with new dreams that will enlighten and bring new life to the world, even after we have gone.
One of the aspects that struck me the most about the Native American traditions was the attitude of speaking only for the benefit of the future 7 generations, if something was not appropriate it was shelved until it could be in line with this decision.
What can happen to our world if, on an individual scale, we start to think and act in this way?
What happens if we give ourselves the time and space to think not of our gain now, but also of the future of our descendants, without knowing them, but just because we respect their existence as much as ours?
I believe strongly that many answers can be found in dreaming new stories, projects, ideas, services, etc.
In our Circles of Dreamers, we meet once a month, we share our dreams and protect them. We reflect and never try to give an interpretation, but we add depth to each other’s dreams, so that each story is like a bead of a luminous chain that connects people. After a few months the dreams become more vivid, more in tune with the people and with each other, we are connected.

We are inspired by the great traditions of east and west, we go to the sources and allow them to fill us with new light, so that our dreams acquire more dimensions and beauty
During the first cycle of CIRCLES OF DREAMERS, we read some excerpts from the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad, 2.I Sanskrit:
“When a man is asleep his soul takes the consciousness of the several senses and goes to rest with them on the Supreme Spirit who is in the human heart. When all the senses are quiet the man is said to be asleep. Then the soul holds the powers of life: breath, voice, ear, eye and mind, and they rest in quietness.
When the soul is in the land of dreams, then all the world belongs to the soul. A human being can be a great king or priest and live in conditions high or low…. So, the human soul takes the powers of life with him/her and wanders in the land of dreams according to his/her desires.”
These and more orally transmitted texts come from ancient traditions and help us to reflect on our own land of dreams, our inner landscape. They are as contemporary as our humanity.
