Return To Hogwarts Harry Potter and the Cursed Child casts a spell over Broadway

8 movies. 7 books. 1 story. 1 more story. The eponymous Harry Potter has taught millions of children, teens and adults about love, bravery, loyalty, acceptance and above all, the power of friendship.

The series recently celebrated its 20th anniversary since it made landfall in the U.S., and Pottermania isn’t going away anytime soon. When a two-part stage play titled Harry Potter and the Cursed Child that was written by Jack Thorne (based on an original story by Thorne, J. K. Rowling and John Tiffany) premiered at the Palace Theatre in London in 2016, fans all

over the world would come to know a continuation of the story about The Boy Who Lived. Poppy Miller, who plays Ginny Weasley Potter, shared her thoughts on what she calls, “a phenomenon.”

“It’s been a very enjoyable process for all of us who have taken on these characters. It’s an amazing backstory and J.K. Rowling writes with such affection and humor for her characters and their relationships to each other,” said Miller, who originated the role of Ginny in London and followed the play to New York. “Then we have this gap of many years before we pick up with them again and Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny and Draco have returned to Platform 9 ¾ but this time, they are sending their own children off to Hogwarts to begin their

adventures.”

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child takes place 19 years after the last book. While Harry has never had an easy life, he is now an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and the father of three school-age children. As Harry grapples with his past, his youngest son, Albus, must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted.

When Albus and Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius befriend each other while at Hogwarts, it turns into quite the adventure that carries on throughout the course of the play.

HOGWARTS from page 3A human side of this epic story,” said Miller, who has wanted to be an actress since she was 5. “We opened in London and didn’t know if it would work, what the fans would think, but my experience in meeting people and getting letters from them is that they have really embraced our extension of their beloved characters.”

Growing up, Miller said that acting wasn’t a profession that people wanted to do. Her school didn’t have drama classes to tell her otherwise, so whenever Miller did any acting she felt very confident and relaxed.

“I was a bit of a shy kid so I felt happy pretending to be somewhere else,” she said. “My dad was an amateur actor and had served in World War II before going to university to become a teacher. He was a beautiful actor and watching him was inspiring to me.”

Of her character, Miller didn’t have to look very far to prepare for the iconic role. A mother herself to her 6-year-old daughter—they have been exploring New York along with Miller’s husband during her time here—she drew from her own personal experiences as a parent

itself. I see my relationship with my own mother through my daughter’s eyes and there is just something particular about what we want a mother to be. I think Ginny does it very well,” she said of her character, who also happens to be a working mother as the sports editor for The Daily Prophet. “She is unconditional, very aware of what her kids need and who they are. She’s got quite firm boundaries—further than mine, that’s for sure—and she doubts her parenting at times.”

While rereading the entire Harry Potter series cover to cover to focus on Ginny, Miller revealed that her favorite book is The Order of the Phoenix. She loves the last books and thinks they are “remarkable and quite profound.” She also loves the sense of the whole group of characters and how Ginny is involved.

“Harry calls Ginny bold, fierce and funny, but I would add two more and say that she is loving and loyal,” she said, adding that she feels many people, including those who see the show, can relate to Ginny and Harry’s relationship. “Harry reaches a point in his life where a lot of what he went through as a baby and a child and young man, his trials and tribulations of this epic story, the darker side is taking effect on his own inner life.

Harry is struggling and Ginny can see that, but she has to hold things together. And in the middle of all that, they have three children to raise.”

Magic and wizardry aside, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child sends a message of relatability to parents and

children. The play acts as a mirror, a metaphor that Miller says travels across all different perspectives from the child’s point of view to the parent’s.

“People feel the play reflects their own experiences. Relationships are hard for their own reasons, but the human side of life, whether witch, wizard or muggle, is something we all carry with us,” she said. “Jack Thorne and J.K. Rowling have written with a sensitivity and insight because they’re great writers in terms of messages of learning and enlightenment.”

On stage, characters will deal with blame and forgiveness as well as redemption. Above all, the play emphasizes what it is to love and feel loved, and the effects of not feeling that emotion.

“Harry grew up without love until he found Hogwarts and his friends,” said Miller. “The play is about the essential components of family love.

Two adolescents relating to each other at the heart of the story; many people fell in love with that in the books and you get that again in the play.”

There is a reason why everything related to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been kept under lock and key in terms of press and publicity, which is where #KeepTheSecrets comes from. Even though the script is published and the play has been out for more than a year and a half, the cast and crew still tries to avoid spoiling the major plotlines of the show. There are a lot of Harry Potter fans (myself included) that have elected not to read the script so they can see the show visually to see what happens.

With music from Imogen Heap, fantastical movements on stage and theatrical elements you won’t find in any other show, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a brilliant show right down to its core. Although it is a long show, with each part totaling two and a half hours including two intermissions, Miller and the cast have found that the audience always wants more.

“That’s a sign that something is going right. You see these people relating to each other in a very accessible and logical way,” she said.

“The audience is transported to this world and it’s just really beautiful and magical.”

ith 500 million titles sold around the world, a movie franchise and Broadway play, it seems almost an understatement to say that the Harry Potter series has changed the world. But what is now one of the most famous franchises in the world might have been overlooked if it were not for an 8-year-old girl.

After being turned down by eight other publishing houses, a sample of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone found its way to Bloomsbury agent Nigel Newton. He took it home and handed it off to his daughter, who read a chapter. She fell in love instantly and penned a note to her father, saying she wanted more. Lucky for her, and the rest of the world, he listened.

That note, scrawled in children’s handwriting on a piece of paper no bigger than an index card, is just one of the many treasures in the New York Historical Society’s Harry Potter: A History Of Magic Exhibit. Rather than offering a tribute to pop culture, the exhibit gives visitors a glimpse inside the mind of Rowling and the creation of one of the most magical worlds in literary history.

The exhibit, which first found a home in the British Library, is organized around the subjects studied at Hogwarts and the history and folklore that has influenced our modern idea of magic. The potions and alchemy room features the tombstone of Nicholas Flamel—a medieval Parisian rumored to be an alchemist who gets a nod in the first Harry Potter book as the keeper of the Sorcerer’s Stone— while the charms room includes the

first written record of the incantation “abracadbra.”

Among the noteworthy pieces in the exhibit are items from Rowling’s personal collection. Handwritten first drafts and sketches of the characters and Hogwarts offer visitors a delightful, behind the scenes look into Rowling’s writing process as well as the world she brought to life.

Also on display are stunning works of art; several of Jim Kay’s pieces done for an illustrated edition of the Philosopher’s Stone for Bloomsbury take a well-deserved place of prominence, as does original cover art done for Scholastic’s version of the books.

The exhibit, which marks the 20th anniversary of the U.S. release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer Stone’s

Revisiting A Byrds Classic

n the annals of music history, Sweetheart of the Rodeo was a major game-changer. Released on Aug. 30, 1968, The Byrds’ sixth studio effort started out with founding members Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman working on a musical history of 20th century American popular music, while splitting time between studios in Nashville and Los Angeles. With the addition of Gram Parsons, who shared a love of country music with Hillman, the outing wound up morphing into the first fulllength country-rock album. With this year marking its 50th anniversary, McGuinn reached out to old friend Hillman with the idea of hitting the road with Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives to pay homage to this landmark recording that opened the floodgates for the likes of Poco, The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Eagles and much of the Southern California soft rock scene that came out of Laurel Canyon in the early 1970s. While the anniversary wasn’t really on Hillman’s radar, he’s been thoroughly enjoying the chance to not only reunite with his old band mate, but share the stage with Stuart and his crew.

“We’ve got a great band first of all—Marty and His Superlatives. And working with Roger is wonderful.

Roger and I get along great. We haven’t worked together for 25 years and it’s like no time has passed.

He’s a joy to work with. I’m having more fun than I’ve had in years, and I mean that,” Hillman said. “I’m having a blast out there every night. It’s great music.

I don’t know—Marty’s band is pretty great and pretty hard to beat. It’s a perfect fit. He gets the music, he’s a great guy and all the guys in the band are wonderful.

It’s truly a lot of fun.”

Recorded at a time when McGuinn and Hillman were trying to rebuild The Byrds after

showing David Crosby and Michael Clarke the door, Sweetheart was not the band’s first foray into country music. Given the fact that Hillman’s roots lay in bluegrass dating back to his teen years and how the other Byrds members came out of the folk scene, country music wasn’t much of a leap.

he North Shore Land Alliance held its 15th anniversary Wine Auction & Dinner on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Planting Fields Arboretum. More than 350 guests attended the event, most of whom came decked out in cowboy hats and boots and other Western attire as a nod to Theodore Roosevelt, whom many believe is the country’s president of land conservation.

The North Shore Land Alliance would like to thank Wine Auction co-chairs Botsy Jones, Nazee Klotz, Valerie Ohrstrom and Andrew Roosevelt and Junior co-chairs Maggie Towers and Emily Turilli for their commitment in helping create such a successful benefit.

In addition, the Land Alliance would like to thank the members of our wonderful community for coming out to support our conservation efforts.

The first-ever Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Award was given to the Cushman Family for their family’s commitment to conservation and invaluable support in helping the Land Alliance preserve, in perpetuity, Cushman Woods, a 28-acre public preserve in Matinecock. A touched Verena and Rod Cushman accepted the award on behalf of the family and thanked the Land Alliance for helping preserve our vulnerable North Shore communities. Former chairman Carter Bales was honored with the Chairman Award for his outstanding service to the organization he shepherded and grew over its first 15 years.

Guests boogied the night away to the tunes of MISS BABS & the Kickin’ Boogie Band and enjoyed bidding on a robust selection of wines and live and silent auction items. Details like the red-checkered table clothes, delicious barbecue fare provided by Sterling Affair and large vintage photos of Teddy Roosevelt that hung behind the stage helped bring the theme of the party full circle.

Toward the end of the evening, the Land Alliance made a special appeal for support of the Tavern House Emergency Stabilization Fund. The Tavern House, a 1700s structure located on the Humes Property in Mill Neck, was severely damaged during many recent storms. The Land Alliance hopes to

In 2018, an estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 63,960 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer.

Proven to find cancers earlier, the 3D mammogram oftentimes cuts the number of call backs for the patients because it is more efficient at the way its imaging program works.

“Until there is a cure, the best weapon is still regular screening, early detection and timely treatment,” said Curran.

Long Island University Announces New Sports Program LIU unites Brooklyn and Post Campuses into Division 1

ong Island University recently announced its athletic programs will be unified into a single NCAA Division I program.

The move, beginning in Fall 2019, is the next step in the university’s vision to elevate its brand nationally.

By uniting its athletic programs into a single NCAA Division I program, LIU’s Post and Brooklyn campuses will be unified into “One LIU.” “Long Island University is a nationally recognized teaching and research institution,” said LIU president Kimberly R. Cline. “We understand the importance of athletics in enhancing our brand nationwide by unifying our university community and our 200,000 alumni around the world. Our student-athletes competing at the highest-level plays a major role in this. We are extremely pleased that the NCAA has embraced this vision for our university’s future.”

The university made the announcement at the historic New York Athletic Club in front of an enthusiastic audience that included LIU student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty, alumni, and long-standing supporters of the university.

“This is an exciting step forward for Long Island University,” LIU Board of Trustees Chairman Eric Krasnoff added. “Athletics plays such an important role in bringing people together and promoting educational values. As we elevate the LIU brand nationally through academic excellence and worldclass research, our athletics program will unite our entire community and compete at the highest levels.”

This effort elevates LIU’s program and builds on its proud tradition of athletic excellence. In the university’s history, the program has combined for 23 national championships, 215 conference titles, and 362 All-Americans.

This initiative will put students first by providing additional opportunities and the university will honor current scholarships to student-athletes. LIU is committed, first and foremost, to all of its

student-athletes graduating on time, with a LIU diploma.

Pretty In Pink Long Island breast cancer charity helps women with everyday expenses

When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, there are the obvious issues such as medical expenses and treatment, but there are also more subtle difficulties such as being able to support a family, get food on the table, and pay bills while not being able to work.

Pink Aid is an organization that works to help women that are diagnosed with breast cancer in these overlooked areas. The Mitchell family founded the Connecticut chapter of Pink Aid eight years ago and the Long Island chapter five years ago.

“We were hearing stories of women who were already in treatment and had their finances completely depleted, unable to pay bills, having to decide between a ride to treatment and keeping food on the table,” said Ali Mitchell, the co-president of the Long Island chapter. “We knew we wanted to do something to help.”

Pink Aid’s mission is to empower women with breast cancer and support them through treatment with dignity. The charity is a grant-based organization, which means once a year they go through the applications that have been submitted by other charities around Long Island, decide which ones best align with their mission, and fund those charities the following year. These charities then help

women with breast cancer with their non-medical expenses like grocery bills and wigs.

“Through an unbelievable groundswell of support, we now have put one million dollars back into the community through our efforts across Long Island, east end to west end, to help women in critical need,” Mitchell said.

Pink Aid has recently added the Pink Purse fund to their organization. Pink Aid’s Pink Purse is a branch of the organization that provides direct emergency assistance to women who need help with non-medical expenses. Awards go out once a month and women can directly apply for assistance and be granted money to help cover household expenses on short notice. “We’ve been wanting to be able to help women directly for a long time, we’re very excited about this,” Mitchell said.

The requirements for women to be provided with assistance from Pink Aid or the organizations that they fund are that they are uninsured or underinsured, in financial need and currently in treatment for breast cancer.

A smaller, but still important part of Pink Aid is that they also help women who don’t have insurance coverage for routine mammograms by funding

programs in hospitals that provide free screenings.

Pink Aid has an annual fashion show and luncheon every year to raise money to supply the funds for the grants and the Pink Purse. A top designer donates pieces to show at Mitchells of Huntington. This year’s event will be held Oct. 17.

The luncheon consists of multiple events, including a fashion show with professional models, auctions and speakers. Everyone’s favorite part of the event is the Celebration of Life Fashion Show. Twelve breast cancer survivors get styled by Mitchells and the Anthony DeFranco Salon, and walk the runway with someone who was important to them during their treatment.

“When that runway starts and everyone gets out of their seats, the feeling of love and support never loses its special spark,” Mitchell said.

Pink Aid is a volunteer-based organization, with only one paid employee between the Connecticut and Long Island chapters. “We are able to deliver so much funding into the community and yet we are still a grassroots, mostly volunteer organization five years in, I am really proud of that,” Mitchell said.

Annual Breast Cancer Celebration Of Survivorship

ward winning journalist Geralyn Lucas, author of Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy, will speak at the annual Celebration of Survivorship evening of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program.

Joining her are three other breast cancer survivors: Jeff Flynn of East Meadow, who is a former support group member and currently a hotline volunteer responding to calls from men concerned about breast cancer; Jamaican-born Sonia Avery-Williams of Rockville Center, who is a nurse; and Susan Leach, also of Rockville Center, a former support group member and manager at a health care agency.

The event, which is free, will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18, at Adelphi University’s University Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. and speakers begin at 7 p.,. Light supper will be served and there will be raffles.

In addition, the breast cancer organization Kat’s Ribbon of Hope will be honored. Kat’s Ribbon of Hope’s partnership with the Adelphi program supports their mutual goal to provide assistance to women who would otherwise not have access to quality breast cancer treatment. Katerina Dinas Raptis, a breast cancer survivor who is the co-founder of KROH, was diagnosed when she was 32. She says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed with the support of her family and excellent medical care. She and her husband George and sister Despina Yarian established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013.

Geralyn Lucas, a 23-year breast cancer survivor from Manhattan, is an award-winning journalist, author and women’s health advocate. Her memoirs, Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy and Then Came Life, were translated around the world and received starred reviews in Library Journal. The television film production of Lipstick garnered an Emmynomination and was an Entertainment Weekly “Must Watch of the Week.”

Her YouTube short “Ouch,” imploring women to get mammograms, was a Webby Honoree, and the inspiration for ABC News Goes Pink, for which Lucas served as coordinating producer. The campaign resulted in the diagnosis of correspondent Amy Robach after an on-air mammogram, and made headlines around the world.

Lucas is the mother of a daughter, who is a sophomore in college, and a 12 year-old-son. She recently became an athlete, completing her 500th

SoulCycle class.

Sonia Avery-Williams, originally from the island of Jamaica, came to New York in 1990. She has been a registered nurse for more than 22 years. As a teenager, she saw her father experience multiple visits to the emergency room for uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension and was inspired by the role that nurses played in getting him back to optimal health.

After a routine mammogram/sonogram in February of 2015, she received a call from her doctor that changed

her world. She went from being a wife, mother and nurse to being a patient.

She had to fit visits to the oncologist between PTA meetings, trips to dances and tennis lessons for the kids, all the while working as an ICU nurse.

Avery-Williams joined an Adelphi breast cancer support group that she credits for playing a pivotal role in her recovery and easing into her new roles.

Jeff Flynn, a five-year breast cancer survivor, is an Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline volunteer.

Since his diagnosis with late stage breast cancer, he has been committed to getting the word out to other men to check themselves periodically and have their physicians check their breasts for lumps or cysts during physicals, knowing that men are not immune to breast cancer. Three male breast cancer survivors and Flynn joined with the Adelphi breast cancer support team to create a brochure for doctors’ offices and mass mailings where men could read about their experiences. Flynn found that helping others and providing support has helped in his journey to recovery, saying it is truly fulfilling to reach out and support someone during their worst of times, as it has helped him during his journey to recovery. Flynn is a husband, a dad and a grandfather.

Susan Leach, a three-time breast cancer survivor, is a financial account manager for Better Home Health Care in Rockville Centre. She volunteers as a care counselor for the Rockville Centre Breast Cancer Coalition, helping others going through similar diagnoses. Leach has been cancer free for 1½ years and is a member of the Adelphi support group for women with metastatic breast cancer. She is a wife and the mother of two boys, age 24 and 18, who likes to spend time with her family, sitting on the beach and enjoying every moment of her life.

The Challenge Of Metastatic Breast Cancer BY erin nAU

n a Thursday night at the Adelphi Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, you will often hear peals of laughter coming from the support group room. The laughter in this room is surprising given that the room is filled with women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer; it even surprises the women when they first join. Metastatic breast cancer is breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, typically the bones, liver and lungs. Women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer will live with it for the rest of their lives.

“Metastatic breast cancer is usually fatal, but not hopeless,” said Madeline Ciancuilli, a metastatic breast cancer warrior of 10 years.

The women in the metastatic group are part of a sisterhood they did not apply to join. There are between eight to12 women in the group sharing stories with each other and the social worker facilitator. The women are

sharing stories about their ongoing fight with the disease and certainly there is more than laughter happening during a group meeting. There are sad moments and triumphant moments, too. The sadness comes from learning that a member’s course of treatment is no longer working, and the triumph comes from finding out one of the women received clean scans from treatment that does work. A woman

will be on a treatment until scans show that her cancer is growing and the treatment has stopped working.

In the support group, the women share their stories about how they have continued to be strong when their treatment stopped working.

They comfort each other in a way that no other person can. They remind each other when one treatment stops working that there are still more

treatments. The women work with their doctors to find the next treatment that might work. This specific type of bond creates opportunities to celebrate all of life’s other victories.

“Support groups are great, however a metastatic breast cancer group is a whole new world,” said Ciancuilli, who is a three-time group member.

Women who are diagnosed with breast cancer are told to arm themselves with the most knowledge they can, to be their own best advocates.

Metastatic breast cancer challenges women to learn so much more.

Women are attempting to live their lives to the fullest with metastatic breast cancer, and they are relying on other women who share in their experiences. They are not alone.

The Many Forms Of Hepatitis One of the common misconceptions regarding liver disease and hepatitis is that it is highly contagious. This is not correct and I wanted to take some time to clarify this issue.

Definitions are a wonderful place to start. Hepatitis simply means that there is inflammation in the liver.

It is derived from the Latin word “hep” meaning liver and “itis” meaning inflammation.

The word hepatitis does not connote etiology of disease.

For this we use a modifier such as the word autoimmune or the letters A, B or C, D or E. Hepatitis A is a virus that affects the liver and is generally acquired through the ingestion of contaminated food. This virus causes acute disease but never causes chronic disease.

It can be passed from person to person as its transmission is of the fecal-oral route.

Therefore, any person who has been exposed to someone with acute hepatitis A should

see their physician to obtain immunoglobulin injections to prevent disease acquisition.

In addition, there is a vaccine available for hepatitis A. Two doses of vaccine are given over a six-month period and this will prevent the development of hepatitis A in the future.

Once someone has been exposed,they can’t get it again.

Hepatitis B is a virus that affects the liver. It is commonly acquired from either sexual contact or through exposure to contaminated body fluids such as blood, saliva, semen, etc. Casual contact does not lead to the spread of hepatitis B. However, close intimate contact with someone infected with hepatitis B can lead to disease acquisition.

Continuing To Make Strides The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks will occur on Sunday, Oct. 21, at Jones Beach and Sunday, Oct. 28, at Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus, uniting communities, honoring those touched by the disease and raising awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer.

The event at Jones Beach is the most attended event in the U.S., with more than 65,000 volunteer participants, helping to raise nearly $3 million.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation. The inspirational event raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer, providing hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone.

Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most. In 2017, ACS staff helped guide more than 40,000 cancer patients through every step of their journey as they moved through the health

care system, including helping with insurance problems, referring them to ACS and other local services, assisting caregivers and addressing obstacles.

However, some foods and lifestyle habits can make your body the healthiest it can be and keep your risk for breast cancer as low as possible.

Get screened regularly While mammograms may not help prevent breast cancer, it can help find cancer when it is early and most treatable. For most women, regular mammograms can begin at age 40.

ongressman Tom Suozzi recently hosted a Biotechnology and Life Sciences Conference at Long Island University’s Tilles Center to promote, grow and brand the region as the “495 Research Corridor on Hi-Tech Island.”

The conference brought together more than 70 experts in the fields of biotechnology and life sciences from Long Island and the greater New York region, as well as business leaders and entrepreneurs from already established startups and tech incubators on Long Island. The speakers and panelists discussed ways to work together to promote and grow biotechnology and life science businesses, creating a high-tech hub on Long Island.

“Our area is known for its world-class research facilities such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Stony Brook, Hofstra and Long Island Universities, Cold Spring Harbor Labs, Feinstein Institute and Northwell,” said Suozzi. “We need to take our obvious brain power to the next level, encourage entrepreneurship, and get private investment capital right here to our ‘495 Research Corridor on Hi-Tech Island.’ It is one of the keys to good paying jobs and long-term sustainability in

our region.”

The featured speaker of the conference was John Preston, founder, MIT Technology Licensing Office. Preston is a founder of TEM Capital as well as CEO of Continuum Energy Technologies LLC (CET) with expertise in energy, environment, technology, and entrepreneurship.

1 cup cornmeal 8 oz block of sharp cheddar cheese, grated ½ tsp kosher salt 2 Tbsp chopped thyme leaves 1- lb ground spicy sausage (or mild if you prefer) 3 oz cream cheese

Cabernet Honey Mustard

⅔ cup brown sugar ½ cup whole grain Dijon mustard 1 cup of Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon 2 fresh thyme sprigs 1. Preheat oven to 350º Fahrenheit.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, then spray parchment paper with cooking spray.

2. In a large bowl, stir cornmeal, cheddar cheese, salt and thyme together.

3. In a separate bowl, combine sausage and cream cheese with your hands.

4. Add sausage mixture to cornmeal mixture and combine the two. Your dough will be dry and crumbly, and somewhat difficult to combine.

Form 1-ounce balls and place on baking sheet one inch apart. Bake at 350º for 20 minutes.

5. While the sausage balls are baking, make your Cabernet Honey Mustard. Add all ingredients to a medium saucepan, bring to medium heat. Stirring often, cook for 20-25 minutes or until sauce has reduced by about half. Remove thyme sprigs, and serve in a bowl alongside sausage balls.

6. Enjoy sausage balls hot or at room temperature, serving with Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon.

Comptroller Audit Finds Lost Funds

n audit by the Nassau County Comptroller uncovered more than $6 million in lost revenues owed to Nassau County because of expired or terminated Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) agreement properties that weren’t restored back to the tax roll.

“Our team found massive deficiencies in how the county recorded, tracked, and collected PILOT payments,” Schnirman said. “Nassau County cannot afford to just write off $6 million in revenue, but in this case that is exactly what happened.”

The audit was started under the previous administration in 2016 to examine PILOT agreements to determine if all revenues were collected, if revenues were correctly calculated, and if allocations to municipalities were accurate

and timely.

While the missing $6 million in PILOT revenues identified prior to 2017 are lost forever, the audit did result in the Town of Hempstead sending Nassau County more than $7 million for missing PILOT payments from 2017 and the first half of 2018.

“This is a great example of an audit getting real results for Nassau County,” said Schnirman. “Our investigation is shining a light on these wasteful practices, providing corrective actions and resulting in money being returned to county taxpayers.”

The more than $6 million in PILOT revenues that were permanently lost were the result of the County not being notified of the early termination of Town of Hempstead PILOT agreements and the failure to ensure that expired PILOTs were billed at the full assessed value until the

In addition, the audit found that the Department of Assessment did not invoice the Nassau County IDA for more than $500,000 in reimbursements to the county general fund for contractual services; late fees were waived in several circumstances; and the Nassau County IDA did not provide evidence regarding the monitoring and compliance of PILOT employment benefits.

Specifically, in nearly half of the sampled Nassau County PILOT agreements, employment goals were not met.

“It’s no secret that these problems persist throughout Nassau. That’s why our team launched audits of the Nassau County IDA and Assessment Review Commission,” he said. “We will push forward with our audits currently in process to find answers and hold these departments

accountable.”

In response to this audit, the Department of Assessment agreed to undertake corrective actions, including taking steps to ensure PILOT revenues are properly recorded and collected and working with the IDAs across the County to prevent these issues from happening again by improving communication and establishing formal procedures.

The comptroller’s audit team will follow-up in six months to check on the progress of the recommendations. As with all audits, the findings will be forwarded to the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.

SWEETHEART from page 8A prod McGuinn and Hillman towards recording in Nashville, Hillman is adamant about reinforcing the fact that The Byrds had already dabbled in the genre. “[The common misconception is that] all of sudden Gram came along and off we went to Nashville.

In some ways, that’s true. Gram loved country music and I had an immediate ally, having come from straight bluegrass myself. Roger and I were looking to do something different at the time. And rebuilding the band. So it was a natural progression to go out to Nashville. But my point is that we were already exploring those avenues two or three albums before Sweetheart,” he explained.

“I’m going to say something you might think is crazy. I think ‘Time Between’ ranks as one of the first country-rock songs, in that it was backbeat with electric, it was country, it had a bluegrass groove and Clarence [White] was on it. Poco came along right when The Flying Burrito Brothers came along as well as Dillard and Clark. That all came after Sweetheart, which opened the floodgates for West Coast, country-type sounds. When we do, ‘Wasn’t Born to Follow,’ which was a Gerry Goffin-Carole King song, they had all of a sudden written it like it was a West Coast country song.

Peter Fonda liked the song and wanted The Byrds to record that for Easy Rider. So that’s when things were happening, way before Poco,” he added. “All of a sudden, there was this big wave of country-type songs coming out of the Sweetheart project that opened the gates. So it wasn’t a stretch, and it never

had been. Really, everyone in The Byrds came out of folk music. We were never a garage rock band.

We learned how to do that. End of story.”

For Hillman, Sweetheart of the Rodeo was a complete labor of love. The recording sessions went well, between working with ace sidemen like standup bass player Junior Huskey, pedal steel player Lloyd Green and guitarist John Hartford on Music Row, and then returning to California to wrap things up with pedal steel player JayDee Maness and future Byrd Clarence White. And while anecdotes abound of there being a negative reaction to The Byrds’ foray into country music by Music Row industry types, for Hillman, part of the reaction was self-inflicted, particularly after The Byrds appeared on the Grand Ole Opry at the Ryman Auditorium.

“We had a good time doing this [record], but we didn’t think it was going to be a monster [album].

We didn’t think anything. You just go do a record and put it out. The record gained all the accolades a couple of years later,” he said. “The Grand Ole Opry was fine and they were very polite to us. In hindsight, when Gram opted to do another song, knowing they wanted ‘Sing Me Back Home,’ we thought we were being hip and cool at the time. But we weren’t. We were being rude and disrespectful to the Opry. And I say it loud and clear. I wished that had never happened. We do ‘Sing Me Back Home’ during the show and I tell the story. Like I say, in hindsight, that was totally disrespectful. The Opry [folks] were very friendly and when we pulled that stunt, they weren’t so friendly. And I don’t blame them. But it’s all history.”

Fans coming out to see Sweetheart of the Rodeo at 50 will get to hear two sets, one setting the table for the country-rock direction The Byrds were going in, and the second presenting the album in its entirety.

Throughout it all, Hillman and McGuinn pay homage to their old friend Parsons and bask in the camraderie they share with Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives.

“Folks are going to like it. I could sell you all day long, But everyone will see this show and like it and you know why? Because we like it,” Hillman said with a laugh. “We’re having so much fun and it’s infectious. If we’re having a good time up there, the audience is going to have a good time. And they always do.”

ockville Centre tends to take on a carnival vibe when the sun goes down, so it is fitting that an eatery with a decidedly festival-like atmosphere has pitched its tent on the bar and restaurant strewn stretch.

With a black and white outdoor awning that belies an interior that is colorful in both its décor and menu, The Bowery Bar & Fare opened this past summer on Sunrise Highway. Taking over the spot of a well-worn Irish pub that sat in the location for close to 30 years, Bowery infuses new life into the space with a fresh concept—complete with food and drink options that make the brain buzz.

Repurposed carnival tents hang over about 40 tables in the front dining area, with more seats both in the bar area and at the actual bar, with yet more spots to be had in the back patio. Before looking at the menu, the eyes drift to a wall lined with stuffed animal prizes, parlor games, a DJ booth with vintage boomboxes and even more games outside, including giant versions of Jenga and Connect Four.

Save the games for later—first, it’s time to eat.

The menu consists of street food and extreme eats from across the flavor spectrum. Aside from the

ubiquitous buffalo wings, the Snacks and Apps menu delivers mini corn dogs, Bao street tacos, suppli (fried rice balls) and an absolutely raunchy beer-battered giant pretzel served with cinnamon sugar cream dip and a cheddar bacon ale dip. Deep fried and a great way to make friends, the pretzel is at its best dipped into that decadent cinnamon cream. The apple fennel soup, a starter found on the restaurant’s special fall menu, is especially noteworthy, as the concoction, served with a charred brie crostini, is

all the evidence one needs to realize the food at Bowery is more than merely neon flair—there is a seasoned chef with serious culinary chops creating magic in the kitchen.

The fun continues as you slink down the menu, with kebabs and sliders. Along with chicken and lamb kebabs, Bowery also breaks the mold with Impossible Burger Kebabs, with cherry tomatoes, red onion and tzatziki.

A meat alternative for those who crave more than mere falafel, the Impossible Burger has made its way onto various restaurant menus recently, with a flavor close enough to meat to utterly confuse the eater. As for sliders, along with sausage and pepper, Philly cheesesteak and chili dog sliders, Bowery also boasts gyro sliders with housemade gyro meat, onions, lettuce, tomato and tzatziki. That house-made gyro meat makes all the difference.

Bowery also offers burgers and dogs. Three styles of franks are listed, all served with curly fries, including Chicago style (“dragged through the garden”), Dirty Water (NYC’s take with onion sauce) and Chili Cheese. The Chicago style is brightly flavored and even includes the bright green relish rarely found on the East Coast. As for burgers, sure, there’s a cheeseburger—but then there’s the Donut Burger and Grilled Cheese Burger. As if you need to be told, the Donut Burger is served on a glazed donut, but also includes cheddar, applewood smoked bacon and Bowery sauce. It’s a high caloric investment, but worth the risk for a night out.

However, even the Donut Burger stands in awe of the Grilled Cheese burger, which swaps out the standard bun for two grilled cheese sandwiches.

More fun between bread is the Jaffle, an

Australian street food that exists somewhere between a waffle and a panini. Jaffles available include prosciutto and mozzarella, chicken, falafel, pulled pork and Reuben. But the best Jaffle is perhaps the simplest: ham and Swiss served with fig jam. It is sweet and salty, buttery and crispy. Finally, main dishes at Bowery include Tacos Al Pastor, skirt steak, chicken paella, fish and chips, and a mammoth pulled pork poutine with cheddar and country gravy served over curly fries.

Of course, the signature cocktail menu shines with over-the-top liquid courage, like the Strongman, Fire Eater, Human Cannonball and Fun House. There’s also alcohol-infused snow-cones and more than 20 beers on tap—including a custom fall brew by Barrage Brewing Company, the Bowery Brunette, a cinnamon apple pie beer. And at the end of the meal, be sure to get the butter cake—topped with ice cream, it lovingly takes the edge off.

Children ages 12 and younger are encouraged to come in costume for free treat bags and candy at each stop throughout this whimsical Halloween village. And letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not forget the food. Festive fall-themed food and beverages, such as pumpkin funnel cakes, pumpkin roll ice cream sandwiches, hot apple cider, sâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;mores and Pumpkin King Size Shakes will also be available.

New this season is Spooky Candy Bark, a class where participants create chocolate bark using milk chocolate and Halloween candy. Class will be held on Saturdays, Oct. 13, 20 and 27, only.

You can also have fun at the Chocolate Monster Mischief class, held on Saturdays (Oct. 13, 20 and 27). ockey has always been a longtime love and obsession of media stalwart and MSG Networks analyst Stan Fischler. While the Brooklyn native has cut back his time broadcasting in order to spend more time with his family, his love of the world’s fastest sport hasn’t dulled his passion for it. The author of more than 100 books, including Metro Ice: A Century of Hockey in Greater New York, the Brooklyn native Stan has a soft spot for Fischler hockey folks from (Photo the Rangers (“Mike courtesy Richter and Mike of MSG Networks) Keenan behind the bench), the Islanders (“Trottier, Bossy, Gillies—they had a ton”) and the Devils (“Marty Brodeur and Scott Stevens”). With the 2018-19 NHL season kicked off, the man known as The Maven not only shared which players resonated the most with him, but also slipped in quite an unconventional take on one Robert Gordon Orr.

“Orr was, in some ways, overrated, although that will sound strange. Orr came up a year before expansion and they didn’t make the playoffs. The next 10 years he played, he won Cups. The first one was over St. Louis, which doesn’t even count because they were an expansion team. The second was against the Rangers, which was legit. But Orr starred when the level of hockey was at its very lowest, so I take that away from him.”
