“Taking the sweet and tender love notes that are coming from husbands, brothers, sons and boyfriends and putting it in as something as iconic as a Vera Bradley zip ID just makes perfect sense,” said DiPuccio. “It’s something these women can treasure. It’s in their handbag so they see it all the time.

FCH was founded by Vickie Durfee, a military mom from Rochester striving to bridge the gap between America’s heroes deployed overseas and their own heroes back home through handwritten love notes and holiday gift boxes. Based out of Henrietta, NY, the organization has been recognized twice by Joining Forces, the Obama Administration’s initiative to strengthen military families nationwide.

“It’s a group that just touches your heart,” said Brady. “This one donation is just a small way that you can give back, but it’s got the biggest impact. The impact of this little note would brighten anyone’s day.”

Since 2007, the group has sent out over 20,500 notes and gift boxes from deployed service members to their loved ones all over the world.

Though the Veteran’s Day partnership will only run through the end of the holiday weekend, Brady hopes that this is not the last time Vera Bradley will celebrate FCH’s cause.

She notes that she would like the store to partner with FCH again in the spring, around Mother’s Day. “Our full intention is to grow this organization,” said Brady. “It started with just one store, and now it has spread throughout the whole district, and I hope that eventually it’ll be in all of our stores.”

era Bradley at Roosevelt Field Mall will be joining all district locations in the company’s second annual Veteran’s Day Weekend partnership with Full Circle Home (FCH), a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting deployed service members with their loved ones.

From Saturday, Nov. 10, through Monday, Nov. 12, customers will be given the opportunity to purchase and donate a zip ID case. This ID case will make its way to military bases and hospitals through FCH, where volunteers will assist soldiers in writing a heartfelt, handwritten note to a family member of their choosing. This note will be placed inside the ID case and, after being packaged alongside tissues and other donated gifts, will be mailed to loved ones across the country to be received during the holiday season or on Mother’s Day. In return for their generosity, participating customers will receive 15 percent off of their entire Vera Bradley purchase.

Roosevelt Field store manager Pat Brady said that it is FCH’s powerful intentions and universal appeal that resulted in a successful first partnership last year.

“You’d be surprised as to how

many people walk through the door that you don’t realize their connection to the cause,” said Brady. “Even with past military. It keeps that connection strong between the family and the soldier, and that’s really important.”

Pets For Vets Paws of War’s latest mission is to help veterans and first responders get the veterinary care they need for their pets that they may be having difficulty obtaining.

of the organization and were very impressed with what they do,� said Gil Blais, president of La Boit Specialty Vehicles. “Being a veteran myself, I knew I wanted to help any way I could and renovating their vehicle was right up our alley. The entire La Boit staff felt the urge to help and did so by volunteering their time. We also had vendors donate equipment so it truly was a group effort. We wish Paws of War all the best for such an innovative program.�

Some of the veterinary services that will be provided by the Vets for Vets mobile clinic include annual vaccinations, dental care, allergy care, grooming/nail trimming microchipping, wellness checks, medication that they may not otherwise be able to afford, minor surgeries and bloodwork/ testing. “We are really excited about this new program and grateful to La Boit for their generosity in restoring the vehicle,� said Misseri. “We look forward to hitting the road and helping out our nation’s heroes.�

The celebratory launch of the unit will begin Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. at the H. Lee Dennison Building located at 100 Veterans Memorial Highway, Hauppauge.

Paws of War is currently seeking sponsors for the Vets for Vets mobile clinic. Those interested in sponsoring the clinic should contact the organization for more details and information.

Anthony Garofalo was born in Corona, NY and raised in Port Washington. In 1944, Tony enlisted in the Navy and received his basic training in Sampson, NY. After a brief assignment in Florida, he was transferred to Texas where he was assigned to a large seaworthy tug christened the ATA 198.

Seaman First Class Garofalo’s duties took him to many locations in the Pacific theater including the Marshall and Philippine Islands where the ATA 198 was assigned to rescue sunken ships and transport disabled naval vessels to repair ports across the Pacific.

While on watch Seaman Garofalo spent many hours keeping the vessel safe from the threat of attack from Japanese warships, torpedos and fighter planes.

Garofalo learned of the end of the war while on the ATA 198 towing a disabled vessel across the wide Pacific. Garofalo was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 16, 1946, promptly joined the reserves and continued his naval service for an additional three years. During his time in the naval service, he received the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal and the Victory Medal.

Garofalo started his own floor covering business, Anthony’s World of Floors, with his wife Rosemarie in 1972. In 1997, the business was awarded the Small Business of the Year. Their business is now owned and operated by their 3 sons, Richard, Robert and Joseph and daughter, Anne Marie Allen, and will continue to serve the community after 46 years together.

The presence of the mobile van comes after Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, the Veterans Advisory

Committee and federal representatives Schumer, Rice and Suozzi strongly advocated for the unit to be in place, while a more permanent clinic could be established within North Hempstead’s borders.

Schumer was the first to suggest the van be placed in North Hempstead

until the town is able to get a permanent clinic. Rice met with the Veterans Advisory Committee and listened to requests for a committee for a community-based outpatient clinic.

“Having the mobile unit here with frequency will have a tremendous positive impact for our local veterans,” said Bosworth. “We are so grateful to the Northport VA’s Medical Center and federal representatives for being great teammates in making this a reality.”

“The case to establish this mobile vet center in North Hempstead was compelling given the critical mass of veterans here who served to preserve this country’s freedom,” said Schumer.

“They deserve efficient access to top-quality health care much closer to home, while we continue to make the case for a permanent Community Based Outpatient Clinic. I am encouraging local vets to pay a visit to this mobile unit for their everyday medical needs and rest a little easier in knowing that the short trip to get these kinds of services is no longer an inconvenient trek. We thank the VA for recognizing this need and heeding the call.”

The Northport VA Medical Center’s Mobile Unit offers a variety of opportunities for veterans to access quality

healthcare in their communities. Some of the services offered by the mobile unit include primary health care, podiatry care and more. The van is staffed with a doctor and nursing staff.

“No veteran should ever go without the care they need simply because of where they live,” said Rice. “But right now, veterans in North Hempstead are over an hour away from the closest VA facility. For elderly veterans, veterans with families and jobs or veterans without access to a car, this trip can be nearly impossible to make on a regular basis. This mobile unit will be a critical resource for the veterans in this community and it brings us one step closer to getting them the high-quality health care they need and deserve.”

“We are so grateful to our veterans for their service and it’s our responsibility to make sure that they have medical care as close to home as possible,” said the Bosworth. “The arrival of the mobile unit, as well as the continued push for a more permanent CBOC, are steps in the right direction. I thanks our federal representatives for their interest, advocacy and dedication to our veterans on this important issue.”

Canine Companions For Independence Honors Great Neck WWII D-Day Veteran Well-known local attorney and retired U.S. Army Cpl. Marshall Sweetbaum of Great Neck will be honored this Veterans Day

by Canine Companions for Independence, a U.S.-based 501 organization that trains and provides assistance dogs.

Sweetbaum was born in 1925 in Manhattan. He served in the United States Army from August of 1943 to Dec. 24, 1945 and was in the 29th Division, 115th Infantry, Company F. He was a part of the second wave of the D-Day invasion at Normandy Beach on June 6, 1944 and was honorably discharged on Dec. 24, 1945.

Following his service, Sweetbaum graduated from Queens College and went on to attend Fordham Law School. In 1964, he started his own law practice, and his son, Joel, joined the firm in June of 1980. The firm became known as Sweetbaum & Sweetbaum, and they have

continued to maintain the law practice in Lake Success. Sweetbaum is considered to be one of the expert appellate lawyers and he has received many honors in this regard.

PSEG Works To Support All Veterans Twenty employee volunteers from PSEG Long Island’s Power Markets group headed to the Northport VA Medical Center in Northport to do some outdoor beautification.

ocal power authority PSEG recently pulled together to show gratitude for this country’s veterans.

Three military veterans, who are also linemen for PSEG Long Island, were among eight kayakers who recently paddled 22 miles from Bridgeport, CT, to Port Jefferson to raise awareness about PTSD and suicide. The U.S. Army and Marine Corp veterans were participants in the “22 PTSD Awareness Challenge” (PAC) kayak event, a 22-mile, crosssound kayak event aimed at increasing PTSD awareness and helping mental illness-related non-profit organizations reach community members in need.

More than a dozen PSEG Long Island employees volunteered at the event, including the kayakers: Glen Brewster of Patchogue (U.S. Marine Corps), Tom Gross of Mattituck (U.S. Army) and Austin Lipari of Bay Shore (U.S. Army). The other employee volunteers were on the chase boats that rode with the paddlers to ensure

Giving Veterans A Reason To Smile Dental365 to provide free dental services to military veterans

T

here are more than 20 million veterans across the United States with less than 15 percent qualifying for dental care. To help bridge this gap, Dental365 will be hosting a day of free dental services for all military veterans on Sunday, Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at participating locations.

Currently, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) only provides dental benefits to veterans who are classified as 100 percent disabled, have a service-connected dental condition or have been a prisoner of war. With high costs prohibiting many veterans from securing additional insurance coverage, our heroes are lacking adequate dental care which can lead to serious, even life-threatening health problems.
