In March of 2020, the Schools of St. Mary successfully launched their Distance Learning Program within three days in response to COVID-19. Faculty members seamlessly transitioned to their adjusted teaching environments, and students continued with daily instruction from their homes, including extras such as physical education. Then in September, after months of careful planning along with parent support, the reimagination of facilities, and adhering to local and state mandates, the Schools reopened safely five days a week for in-person learning with full COVID safety protocols in effect.

Students whose families opted to remain at home assimilated to the interactive classroom experience and participate in their daily education in real-time with their peers. At St. Mary’s, the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff are paramount. The administration’s ability to quickly respond to the impact of the pandemic received accolades beyond the community and surpassed what public schools in the area could offer their families.

Student Loan Forbearance Extends Through January

.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced the extension of the federal student loan administrative forbearance period, the pause in interest accrual and the suspension of collections activity through Jan. 31, 2021. Federal student loan borrowers will not be expected to make payments through the end of this month, though they will continue to be able to do so and benefit from the 0 percent interest rate as they pay down principal. Non-payments will continue to count toward the number of payments required under an income-driven repayment plan, a loan rehabilitation agreement or the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

“The coronavirus pandemic has presented challenges for many students and borrowers and this temporary pause in payments will help those who have been impacted,” DeVos said. “The added time also allows Congress to do its job and determine what measures it believes are necessary and appropriate. The Congress, not the Executive Branch, is in charge of student loan policy.”

In March 2020, Secretary DeVos instructed employers to halt wage garnishments for borrowers with defaulted federal student loans. That instruction remains in place, and any defaulted borrowers who continue to have their wages garnished will receive refunds.

Upon President Trump’s March 13, 2020, declaration of a national emergency resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, DeVos immediately used her authority under the HEROES Act of 2003 to set all federal student loan interest rates to zero and automatically enter borrowers into administrative forbearance, allowing them to defer payments without financial penalty. On Aug. 21, Secretary DeVos fulfilled the president’s Aug. 8 memorandum on emergency federals student loan relief by extending the CARES Act borrower benefits until Dec. 31, 2020.

Mount St. Mary Introduces New Humanities Program Students will soon be able to get a $6,500 per year humanities-based education at Mount Saint Mary College. Beginning in the fall 2021 semester, the college will offer Humanities@Work, a new Interdisciplinary bachelor’s program that fuses coursework with hands-on service and internship experience.

Humanities@Work will also offer a four-year tuition lock and a four-year graduation guarantee.

From English to History to Philosophy and everything in between, this robust program mixes a variety of courses across disciplinary areas, co-curricular seminars, research projects and internships for a dynamic student experience with real results. It offers students a high degree of flexibility and customization of their degree, handing them the keys to their own academic destiny. Students can add minors, select areas of emphasis, take concentrations and more as they navigate their education over four years.

In order to keep their class sizes intimate, a limited number of students will be accepted into this program each year. For maximum immersion, these students will live on campus.

“We are extremely excited to be offering Humanities@Work,” Jason N. Adsit, president of the Mount, said. “This is more than just another way to get a degree. Humanities@Work is a deeply immersive, service-oriented program that will aid our community and help deserving students—some who might not otherwise been able to afford college—to change their lives. Humanities@Work students will study the humanities in the Mount’s signature seminar-style classes, allowing a personalized education from the college’s dedicated faculty. The program’s integrated service and volunteer elements will allow for practical applications in Newburgh and the surrounding communities. Humanities@Work will also infuse coursework with mentoring, internships and other practical experience for all four years of the program: Students will work with hand-selected companies, nonprofits, and social services organizations to take their education to the next level.

Despite the stereotypes, humanities students go on to contribute and assume leadership roles within the non-profit and private sectors: 93 percent of Mount 2019 graduates were employed or in graduate school six months after graduation. Students who complete the program will be prepared for leadership roles across a broad range of current and emerging fields of industry. Potential career paths include human resources, social work, advertising, journalism and more.

ount Saint Mary College is offering a virtual Open House for all interested students on Sunday, Jan. 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The event promises to be more than just a boring Zoom experience.

State Summer School Of The Arts Accepting Applications Applications are currently being accepted for the 2021 New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSSA), Interim Commissioner Betty A. Rosa recently announced.

The four-week summer program will be held fully online to ensure safety during the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis. Tuition will be free for all students who qualify, fostering equity by allowing students who may not have been able to participate otherwise.

Students will be able to experience intensive work and interaction with internationally acclaimed artists and performing arts companies. Students in grades 8-12 throughout New York State are encouraged to apply on the NYSSSA website. Auditions and portfolio reviews will take place online in January and February.

“The New York State Summer School of the Arts is a remarkable program and we are so proud to continue to offer students incredible

experiences this year, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic,” Board of Regents Vice Chancellor T. Andrew Brown said. “I am especially gratified that we are able to open NYSSSA to even more students by increasing access through our virtual platform and I urge parents and students to take advantage of this phenomenal opportunity to connect with and learn from accomplished artists.”

The New York State Summer School of the Arts provides more 400 of New York’s most talented students the opportunity for advanced study in the visual and performing arts fields. NYSSSA is comprised of

seven component schools: Theater, Ballet, Modern Dance, Orchestral Studies, Choral and Vocal Studies, Visual Arts and Media Arts. The summer arts program offers highly competitive pre-professional training to promising artists from a variety of disciplines.

Students are accepted into the schools through a competitive audition and review process conducted by the artistic staff. Due to the nature of the 2021 program, tuition will be free for all students, enabling every student who qualifies the opportunity to participate in the program. Audition information and application materials are available on the NYSSSA website.

Though usually experienced as a four-week residential arts program, NYSSSA staff have adapted the curriculum due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Students will be able to experience intensive work

and interaction with internationally acclaimed artists and performing arts companies. The modified NYSSSA program will continue to give students a unique opportunity to experience the rigors of their chosen arts field.

NYSSSA is a program of the State Education Department and Office of Cultural Education. NYSSSA serves an important need to foster and enhance the artistic abilities of the state’s most gifted young artists regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender expression or economic status. Follow-up studies on the program have identified former students who now hold positions within top professional companies around the world.

Meet The Coach: Keith Osik

F

armingdale State College’s recent “Meet the Coach” feature is on Head Baseball Coach Keith Osik.

Coach Osik was named Farmingdale State’s Head Baseball Coach on July 6, 2005 and holds a career coaching record of 355-219 over his first 15 seasons. At the helm, he has led the Rams to one Regional Championship (2009), eight Skyline Conference Championships (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2019), eight NCAA Tournament appearances (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2019) and one Division III College World Series appearance (2009).

Osik finished his major league career in 2004 with the Baltimore Orioles.

He spent his first seven years with the Pittsburgh Pirates and one season with the Milwaukee Brewers. Primarily a catcher, he also played seven other positions while in the majors.

Osik, who made his major league debut with Pittsburgh in 1996, was drafted by the Texas Rangers out of high school and selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 24th round after his junior year of College at LSU.

You know I think it was just the natural progression to get into coaching. I received a call from Tom Azzara, who I went to high school with, asking if I would be interested in coaching at Farmingdale State College and it sort of naturally happened.

My favorite coaching moment besides just the every day

What makes Farmingdale State such a great place to work?

For me what makes Farmingdale State College such a great place to coach is the administration, the kids that show up every day looking to get better and the facilities. They are first class in every way.

How would you best describe your coaching style?

I would say my coaching style is focused on being disciplined and fundamentally sound on the field and always, no matter what, playing hard for your family, teammates and your school.

accomplishment as a coach?

I think my greatest accomplishment as a coach at Farmingdale would be taking over a program that was 7-27 and building it up to a top regionally ranked team year in and year out. FSC is now a destination that student-athletes look to come to.

What are the values of your program?

The values that we try to instill in our student athletes would be that they are a family. The closeness and trust with one another translates to how they play and how they are. For us, it really is that simple and a lot of things take care of themselves.

“I’m just really proud of this program and how we have built a great culture,” Osik said. “It has taken every player to ever wear a Farmingdale State Rams uniform to contribute to over 350 wins, eight Skyline titles and one World Series appearance. That is something we will never be ashamed of.”

Model UN Team Wins At Conference Students from Syosset High School’s Model UN won several individual awards and a collective team award at the Philips Exeter Academy Model UN Conference (PEAMUN). The Syosset team of Aarushi Basmatkar, Matthew Pfeffer, Nandini Singh and Dylan Wechsler received the Best Small Delegation Award for a delegation of under 15 students.

The PEAMUN conference, which was held virtually earlier this fall, is a one day Model UN Conference that drew more than 300 student participants from 16 schools worldwide. Basmatkar won first place as Best Delegate in her Crisis Committee. Singh won second place as outstanding delegate in her Economic and Social Council

(ECOSOC) Committee. Pfeffer and Wechsler tied for third place with Honorable Delegate awards in their ECOSOC Committee.

This is the 11th year Philips Exeter Academy has hosted its Model UN Conference for novice and

experienced student delegates. Model UN is a simulation of United Nations organizations where its participants take roles of ambassadors and delegates from various countries and debate current issues.

SUNY Old Westbury Appoints New President

D

r. Timothy E. Sams, a veteran administrator with a track record of student-focused leadership and success, has been named president at SUNY Old Westbury by the State University of New York Board of Trustees.

The appointment is effective on or about Jan.11. He succeeds Dr. Calvin O. Butts, III, who retired at the end of Aug. after nearly 21 years leading the college.

“Assuming the presidency of SUNY Old Westbury is an honor and the highlight of my career and I am proud to follow President Emeritus Butts in this capacity,” Sams said. “I have spent three decades seeking to transform student’s lives through access, excellence, success and impact.

Old Westbury’s mission to cultivate critical thinking, empathy, creativity and intercultural understanding, to endeavor to stimulate a passion for learning and commitment to building a more just and sustainable world, is perfectly aligned with my worldview. I can imagine no better place for me to be a president.”

Sams brings 29 years of higher education experience to SUNY Old Westbury, with demonstrated leadership in improving student success, particularly for students from disadvantaged and marginalized communities. He brings to the college an emphasis on institutional excellence, inclusive innovation and strategic change management.

“Dr. Sams has dedicated his adult life to creating dynamic academic and social communities that support the development of college students,” Mili Makhijani, chair of the SUNY Old Westbury College Council, said.

“His career-long commitment to student engagement and advocacy matches strikingly well with Old Westbury’s ongoing emphasis on student equity and success, as well as its historic commitment to empowering students, especially those from underserved backgrounds, to excel as leaders both in their careers and in the communities in which they live and work.”

He currently is vice president of student affairs for Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas. At Prairie View, he has showcased his deep commitment to excellence, student support, and inclusivity through the creation of the university’s

This recent work builds on past experiences at respected institutions across the country. As the senior vice president for student development at Morehouse College, he held a portfolio that included Student Services, Enrollment Management, Campus Safety and Athletics, among other units. As vice president for student life at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, he led such services as

Residential Life, Health and Mental Health Services, the Campus Center and Career Services. He is also credited as inaugurating the Student Life Office at New York UniversityAbu Dhabi and, for 13 years, led the Black Cultural Center at Swarthmore College.

Sams’ career accomplishments include reaccreditation and two strategic plans, student success, efforts to increase student and staff diversity, and elevating residential college models at three institutions. He helped create the nation’s first ROTC Center of Excellence, a campus-based PrEP program, a J-Mester program, a bridge program, an undergraduate completion program, an experiential learning and cultural immersion program in Ghana, West Africa, two major LGBTQ support initiatives, a student emergency resource center, and a $1.5 million federal community intervention grant.

Sams is from Syracuse. He earned a bachelor’s degree in History and Sociology from Union College in Schenectady, a Masters in Africana Studies from the University at Albany and a Ph.D. in African American Studies from Temple University. He is an MSI Aspiring Leaders Fellow and recipient of the 2020 Champions for Student Success Award from American Campus Communities.

The appointment concludes a

10-month search process that included an 18-member search committee representing a wide range of campus and state constituencies. RPA Inc., an executive search firm with an expertise in higher education, assisted in the process.

Hofstra University Appoints Its Ninth President

H

ofstra University Board of Trustees Chair Donald M. Schaeffer announced that the university’s board of trustees unanimously appointed Dr. Susan Poser as the next president of Hofstra University.

“I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Susan Poser as the next president of this great university,” Schaeffer, who also served as the chair of the search committee, said. “In Dr. Poser, we have found a higher education leader of exceptional experience, a collaborative and visionary person and a scholar of great depth and intellect. Dr. Poser’s leadership skills make her well prepared to succeed President Stuart Rabinowitz, whose extraordinary service has led to years of growth and development for Hofstra University.”

Poser has, for the past five years, served as the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), a Carnegie Research One university with 16 colleges, including seven health sciences colleges, and more than 35,000 students. Ten college deans and the university librarian report directly to her. Her office oversees enrollment management, diversity, faculty affairs, global engagement, undergraduate affairs and academic programs assessment for all 16 colleges.

“It is a great honor to be named the ninth president of Hofstra University,” Dr. Pose said. “Over the past two decades, Hofstra has benefited from outstanding presidential, board, faculty and alumni leadership, creating an excellent platform to meet the challenges of higher education in the post-pandemic world. I am looking forward to joining the Hofstra community and building on this legacy for years to come.”

At UIC, Poser’s major accomplishments include the 2019 acquisition of the John

Dr. Susan Poser Marshall Law School, creating the first and only public law school in Chicago. Another major focus was the creation of several initiatives to support faculty and enhance diversity, including establishing pipelines for underrepresented faculty; running a bridge program to move underrepresented postdoctoral fellows to faculty positions; creating the Faculty Administrator Leadership Program to mentor faculty; and recently starting up a new Center for Teaching Excellence with a special focus on supporting inclusive classrooms. She also played a key role in creating two new cultural centers on campus—one focused on Arab American students and another focused on students with disabilities. An advocate of interdisciplinary work, Poser has created regular forums for faculty from across the disciplines to meet and share research in order to generate interdisciplinary research and scholarship.

“I am extraordinarily pleased to welcome Dr. Susan Poser to Hofstra University,” Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz said. “Her experience and ability will serve Hofstra University exceptionally well. I have had the privilege to work with the Hofstra University community – students, faculty, administration and staff, families, alumni and community for many years, and know that

Prior to her position at UIC, Poser was a professor of law at the University of Nebraska College of Law, where she served as the dean (201016) and as the associate to the University’s Chancellor (2007-10).

Poser grew up in New York City and majored in classics at Swarthmore College, graduating with honors. She earned a JD and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Before beginning her academic career, Poser clerked for the Honorable Dolores K. Sloviter, the Chief Judge of the U.S. Court Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia and served as the Zicklin Fellow in Ethics at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Poser’s scholarly work is primarily in the areas of legal ethics and tort law and she has published widely, including in the Michigan Law Review and Georgetown Journal of Legal Ethics.

Poser has a history of institutional service and regional leadership, including an appointment to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s delegation to Israel. A member of the Economic Club of Chicago, her board service includes the International Women’s Forum (Chicago chapter), the Nebraska Humanities Foundation, the Strategic Air & Space Museum (Omaha) and the ACLU (national board and Nebraska chapter). In Nebraska, she served as the reporter for adoption of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct by the Nebraska Supreme Court and received

the Shining Light Award from the Nebraska Bar Foundation for this work. She is a member of several bar associations and has served in leadership positions for the Association of Public & Land Grant Universities and the Association of American Law Schools.

“It will be a privilege to work with the Hofstra faculty, who provide an outstanding liberal arts education and a wide array of graduate and professional degrees that lead to satisfying and successful careers for Hofstra graduates,” Poser said. “I’m looking forward to working on the Hofstra campus, with its state-of-the-art facilities and arboretum, and as a native New Yorker, this will be a very happy homecoming.”

Can Schools Finish The Year How to keep them open and safer

OVID-19 cases are surging across the U.S., a harsh reality that students, parents, teachers and staff feared would happen when many schools opened for fall sessions. As a result, schools throughout the nation have closed and shifted to remote learning in recent weeks.

“The problem that schools are facing is there is still a significant prevalence of COVID in many communities,” said Dr. Jonathan Spero (www.inhousephysicians. com), an expert on pandemic preparedness whose company is delivering COVID-19 testing to K-12 schools in New York City. “Schools need to do everything they can to prevent student outbreaks; otherwise it’s going to continue shutting down schools.

What will it take to return kids to the classroom and keep schools open? Though vaccines have been approved, it may be months before children, their families and school

personnel are vaccinated. Until then, implementing a plan that includes processes for virus detection and response is paramount, Spero said.

“But on top of that you have to deal with a tremendous amount of anxiety.

The students, parents, faculty and staff are all on pins and needles because they are feeling insecure about their health,” he added. “The only way to address all of this is through a comprehensive health security strategy that can work when so many variables are in play.”

Spero offers these suggestions to safely open schools while navigating the continuing COVID-19 crisis:

Daily Temperature Checks

“They’re not a fool-proof way to see if someone has COVID,” Spero said.

“A significant number are asymptomatic, but fever is a common symptom, and because it is, temperature checks should be a fundamental daily procedure.”

Spero suggests two ways to organize the temperature-checking process at schools: designate some

staff members, who can each scan 200 to 300 students an hour and use thermal scanners, a device that can scan 400 to 600 per hour.

Screening for Symptoms and Close Contacts

This starts at home, where parents can help prevent the spread at

schools by keeping children home who are showing COVID-like symptoms or have been in close contact with someone with COVID. At schools, everyone returning should be screened on a range of symptoms. Those with symptoms should be sent home and referred for testing.

“Positivity rates in the community need to be held to a reasonable level for schools in an area to be open,” Spero said. “And when they are open, there are a lot of moving parts for school officials to deal with in order to avoid an outbreak. But if they’re not dealt with, ultimately your school could be closing again.”

Nicole Wadsworth Named Dean Of NYITCOM

N

icole Wadsworth, D.O. has been appointed dean of New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM).

Wadsworth, who is board-certified in emergency medicine, most recently served as site dean for the NYITCOM-Long Island campus and senior associate dean at NYITCOM prior to that.

In her new role, Wadsworth will be responsible for the overall academic and strategic direction of NYITCOM’s Long Island and Jonesboro, Arkansas, locations. She will also continue to oversee day-today operations on the Long Island campus.

Before arriving at NYITCOM in 2018, Wadsworth served as associate dean of academic affairs at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. While there for 17 years, she served in various faculty and administrative roles, including associate dean of academic

Suffolk Students Excel In Internships Despite Challenges

he global spread of COVID-19 has disrupted life as we know it, including the traditional college internship model. Yet, opportunities for work experience are still abundant.

With safety top of mind for both employers and students during COVID-19, several Suffolk County Community College students from Assistant Professor Kristin Conway’s Cooperative Education in Business course landed remote internships during the fall 2020 semester. Staying home allowed interns to learn and work safely while staying active in the job market.

“Since transitioning the asynchronous online course to virtual internship sites, we’ve successfully placed our business, accounting and computer science students in business organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada,” Conway said. “The students worked diligently to accomplish the objectives presented by the organizations.” And, Conway said the fall success is carrying over, explaining that nearly 60 students are registered

How Lifelong Learning Is Becoming A New Version Of The MBA

W

hen higher education looks back on 2020 in decades to come, the year of the pandemic could be viewed as a turning point for MBAs and other advanced degrees.

COVID-19 forced a nationwide experiment in online learning, and one lesson stemming from that experiment may be that furthering your education doesn’t necessarily need to mean paying high tuition to earn a formal post-graduate degree.

“We all need to be lifelong learners if we hope to achieve our goals and lead a fulfilling life,” said Kimberly Roush, founder of All-Star Executive Coaching (www.allstarexecutivecoaching.com) and co-author of Who Are You…When You Are Big? “But that can mean many things, and because of the pandemic I think it’s become even more clear that the ways we approach educating ourselves don’t need to be stuck in the notions from the past of how learning takes place.”

Harvard’s and Columbia’s business schools are already adding certificates and lifelong learning to their programs.

Instead of immersing themselves into a degree program for a compact period of time, students have the option to stretch their learning out over years, latching on to what meets their current needs.

That kind of approach fits well with the goals and lifestyles of many business leaders, said Roush. She offers a three-month group-coaching program for executives in transition called “Back In the Game,” which provides business leaders with a chance to continue learning and honing skills to help reignite careers thrown off track by the pandemic.

Roush has advice for those who want to keep adding to their knowledge base throughout their careers, whether that’s done through a certificate program, a one-time online class, coaching sessions or a more formal degree:

Think deeply about yourself and your goals.

Allow yourself the time and space to reflect and get off autopilot so you can be deliberate and intentional as you move forward, Roush said.

“We tend to be all about drive and action,” she says. “Reflecting about ourselves is something that often gets overlooked. In some cases, people don’t have the tools

to do it effectively.”

Strive to be a learner, not a knower

Some people are “knowers” and others are “learners,” Roush said.

“Knowers feel compelled to know the answer, a sign of an insecure ego,” she said. “In today’s world, of course, it’s impossible for any one person, or any one leader, to know it all. Knowers operate more out of control than out of curiosity. They do not really lead so much as they manage.” Lifelong learners, on the other hand, have a predisposition to be curious.

“They have a healthy ego,” she said. “so they have no problem saying, ‘I don’t know the answer, but let’s figure it out.’ ”

“Often, people have been deliberate about their career choice and love their field; they just have gotten caught up in a part of it that they don’t like,” she said. “Sometimes, it’s just a matter of getting back to their roots and remembering what they

“The focus is on working together,” Roush said. “It all stems from that natural curiosity. By asking ‘what’ and ‘how,’ leaders encourage more conversation—and more learning by everyone.”

Students Expand Future Of Programming

ounded on the fundamentals of expanding the programming community through an emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation, TeenHacks is a student-led organization that sets out to bring myriad opportunities to the programming landscape through hackathons.

TeenHacks’ objective is to transform the negative perception of the word “hacking,” which is usually associated with illicit behavior that allows unauthorized access to technology, and instead, endorse the various real-world implications that programming can bring to this world.

This organization teaches skills that aren’t being taught in schools, and allow the students the opportunity to explore their identity in a world of programming, allowing them to also find career paths and opportunities to network in the way that they are genuinely interested about.

Due to unprecedented circumstances, TeenHack’s hosted its first fully remote hackathon, which ran over the course of the first three Saturdays last month.

With a turnout of more than 400 participants, the triathlon was an amazing success. The triathlon featured three different aspects of the programming landscape, each giving unique opportunities and activities to our participants.

During the Learn-a-thon, TeenHacks held multiple virtual workshops in which various companies brought workshops and lessons

to share expertise to the participants, delivering useful skills to be used in building their projects. The Builda-thon was an ode to TeenHack’s original hackathon in which teams built their projects with oversight from mentors and the Share-a-thon gave a platform for the participants to share their projects.

Over the course of three weeks, TeenHack’s featured a countless number of workshops that empowered teenage hackers. Some of the many workshops featured included an intro to HTML, CSS and JavaScript Workshop through a service known as Repl.it, the TIBCO CLOUD Fast Track Workshop, which taught participants how to incentivize online sales through cloud integration and API-led processes, and other workshops that taught participants about artificial intelligence, web development, blockchain and neural coding.

The goal of these workshops was to introduce and teach skills in a highly accessible manner, marking TeenHacks as an excellent organization for beginner participants.

TeenHacks featured panels of speakers that empowered women, coming from different backgrounds to share experiences on entrepreneurship and ease the disparities found in STEM subjects.

Abigayle Peterson, founder of Magnify Wellness and Nia Asemota, an engineer and technical instructor at NYU, among other women speakers, shared their journeys to inspire the most marginalized populations in

STEM to open windows of opportunity in their lives.

TeenHack’s triathlon featured numerous prize tracks that tackled various problems in the status quo, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amidst the bleak scenario in the homes of billions of people, it is flabbergasting to reflect as to how something microscopic has sent ripples across the entire world, transforming the lives of everyone included in a way that none of us have ever experienced, but TeenHacks gave the opportunity for students to change that in these unprecedented times where the use of technology has skyrocketed.

The first place winner of the COVID prize track created an app that utilized four modules: a non-contact heart rate detector, a facial attribute analysis, a mental health booster and a COVID data module, all of which help COVID patients in a time where help is crucial.

Other projects, such as NRG who won the People’s Choice Award, combatted another underlying problem in society. NRG is a machine learning algorithm that predicts the health status of your brain, based on whether it’s utilizing fuel efficiently.

Their algorithm will be able to predict whether someone’s brain is operating on enough fuel, classifying whether someone is in a state that indicates diabetes, Alzheimer’s or other diseases related to inefficient energy extraction. With their solution, we can predict the onset of neurological diseases before they happen. TeenHacks has given the platform for hundreds of students, like NRG, to take steps towards changing the world in even the worst circumstances, but it is these small steps that will allow them to run in their bright futures.

Schreiber High School Adds Film Featuring Deaf-Blind Actor To Curriculum

elen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults (HKNC), a division of Helen Keller Services (HKS), announced that the award-winning film Feeling Through, the first film ever to feature a deaf-blind actor in a lead role, has been added to the schoolwide curriculum at Port Washington’s Paul D. Schreiber High School.

The film was shown as part of a “Feeling Through Experience” to 1600 students in their English classes, along with a 25-minute documentary film on how the short feature was made, followed by a Q&A discussion with a panel that included Sue Ruzenski, Helen Keller Services acting CEO and longtime HKNC executive director; Chris Woodfill, associate executive director, HKNC and deaf-blind actor Robert Tarango. Filmmaker Doug Roland moderated the panel. The “Feeling Through Experience” was also streamed as a community virtual event.

Feeling Through grew from Roland’s chance encounter in New York City with the first deaf-blind person he

accurately representing the deaf-blind community, Roland reached out to Ruzenski and a strong collaborative relationship developed between the filmmaker and HKNC. “Working with Doug on this project has been an absolute pleasure from the start.” Ruzenski said. “We are thrilled that our local high school has made this important film part of its curriculum. Helen Keller Services has many neighbors and supporters in the Port Washington area. Helen Keller National Center is one division of Helen Keller Services (HKS). Headquartered in Sands Point, HKNC provides comprehensive vocational and independent living training on a national level to youths and adults who are deaf-blind. It offers support and learning opportunities to professionals and family members and maintains a National Registry of Persons who are deaf-blind. The center partners with other agencies across the United States to build their capacity to work with individuals who are deaf-blind.

North High Teacher Achieves National Board Certification The Great Neck Public Schools recently announce that North High School science teacher Alan Schorn has achieved National Board Certification.

Schorn is one of 32 accomplished educators from New York State who achieved National Board Certification this year. There are more than 125,000 National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) nationwide who are recognized for advancing student learning through excellence and leadership.

Schorn has been a member of the North High science department for the past 32 years. He currently teaches physics and science research classes, and he is also state-certified to teach math,
