A highly anticipated event is the demonstration of the Port Washington Fire Department’s new Fire Boat at the Town Dock. The demonstrations are sure to be exciting for all the festival-goers. Many lucky visitors can catch a free ride on the picturesque North Fork Trolley, sponsored by the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (The BID). The trolley will make a continuous loop from the train station to the festival. The HarborFest Model Boat Regatta program has Chamber of Commerce volunteers teaching third-graders from all Port elementary schools how to make catamaran-style boats from recycled materials. Registration for participants takes place at Baxter’s Pond at 9:15 a.m. for Sousa and Daly, at 10 a.m. for Guggenheim and Salem, and at 10:30 a.m. for Manorhaven and St. Peter’s. As part of the environmental awareness mission of HarborFest, the Town of North Hempstead Office of Sustainability will have a prominent booth near the dock entrance to give out important information. They will bring bottle recycling bins to the dock for disposal of plastic water bottles. Grassroots Environmental Education has organized a timely environmental education project that will tackle the issue of keeping our world free from plastics. The project is called Our Plastic World: Recycling is Not the Answer. It will involve the fifth-graders from all of Port’s elementary schools. Arts Centre. One of the most exciting things for kids of all ages will be the demonstration of the Port Washington Fire Department’s new Fire Boat. The demonstrations will be in Manhasset Bay at the Town Dock ramp. If you want a taste of nostalgia, the whole family can catch a free ride on the North Fork Trolley, sponsored by the Greater Port Washington BID. The trolley will serve as one of the shuttles to take people between the train station and the Town Dock. For budding artists, Art in the Park will have a special free workshop for children called Fun With Clay beginning at noon. They will also have button making all day. Art in the Park is organized and sponsored by The Art Guild with additional sponsorship from the Knickerbocker Bay Club. Kids and their families can take a cruise aboard the beautiful Charles II. This boat serves as Port Washington’s own Water Taxi and is offering special cruises around Manhasset Bay throughout HarborFest. Children ages five and older and their families can board the schooner SoundWaters for a sail around the Bay and back. Sails leave at 12, 2 and 4 p.m. This year’s environmental education project will tackle the issue of plastics in our environment and will involve the fifth graders from all of Port Washington’s elementary schools. Students will learn that recycling alone is not the answer. Grassroots Environmental Education, a Port Washington-based nonprofit, has designed the project and worked with the children. It is sponsored by Newsday Media Group. Families can browse the craft and merchant booths and satisfy their hunger at the Fabulous Food Court. HarborFest offers tons of fun for everyone, so come to the Town Dock on Sunday, June 5, and plan to spend the whole day. For more information about HarborFest, call the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce at 516-883-6566, email office@ pwcoc.org or visit www.pwcoc.org/ harborfest.shtml.

HarborFest Model Boat Regatta

Don’t miss this year’s 20th annual HarborFest Model Sailboat Regatta for third-graders on Sunday, June 5, at Baxter’s Pond in Port Washington. The Regatta is an exciting part of the HarborFest 2016 celebration, where third graders make and sail their own pontoon-style boats made with recycled materials. All third graders who register on race day morning will have a chance to win. Race day registration times at Baxter’s Pond are staggered for participants, as follows: • Sousa and Daly: 9:15 a.m. • Guggenheim and Salem: 10 a.m. • Manorhaven and St. Peter’s: 10:30 a.m. The first elimination heat will take place at 10 a.m. with the final heat slated for 11 a.m. The awards ceremony immediately follows. The children will compete against other “skippers” from their schools, with the winners of these rounds racing against other schools. During the awards ceremony, awards will go to individual school champions, the first, second and third place overall finishers and the prestigious team spirit award to the school with the highest percent of participation in the Regatta. The Regatta school instruction

chairperson is Marian Weissman. She and many capable volunteer instructors will have met with more than 400 third-graders in all of Port’s elementary schools to show them how to make their boats. Empty milk or juice cartons are transformed into pontoons. Paper and plastic bags are turned into sails. Wooden dowels serve as masts and booms, and slats of wood act as keels to keep the boats sailing upright and straight. Bill Palafox is the Principal Race

Officer (PRO) for the actual race day and responsible for the day’s operation, and is ably supported in many ways by Greg Hovsepian and Mary Lu Dempsey-Palafox. The first 200 children to register for the event will receive T-shirts, compliments of the Tepper Intergenerational Program of the Port Washington Public Library Foundation. Benefactors for the event are the Baxter’s Pond Foundation and the Nautical

Advisory Council of the Port Washington Public Library. The Regatta was created to fire kids’ imaginations and give them the challenge of creating something themselves, seeing their creation in action, all while learning the principles of buoyancy and sailing. The Regatta is also a great way for them to begin to develop a lifelong appreciation for the water as well as helping them develop team spirit. Best of luck to all of the racers.

Anyone who knows Tab Hauser also knows his outstanding photographs. What had been exclusively a hobby for decades has evolved into a handsome business over the past several years. He has an incredible eye for capturing special moments, finding the unique in the everyday and melding photography with his other passion, traveling. This year’s exhibit, The Water’s Edge, A Collection of Photos By Tab Hauser (www.tabhauserphoto.com), encapsulates much of what Manhasset Bay and Hempstead Harbor offer through the seasons. Many of Hauser’s photo collections, which feature a dizzying range of images of people and animals,

landscapes and events, and myriad other subjects, can be viewed on www.tabhauserphoto.com. The Pride of Cow Bay Nautical Museum, which looks like a bright red tugboat located at the Town Dock, will present this selection of Tab Hauser’s photographs in an exhibit that celebrates the year-round beauty of Port Washington’s waters and shoreline activities. Sponsored by Inform Fitness and Strong’s Marine, the exhibit will be unveiled on June 5 as part of the 26th Annual HarborFest celebration. Be sure to visit the exhibit while at HarborFest or afterwards. The exhibit will be on display until next year’s celebration and is always open since the photos are viewed through the museum’s portholes and rear windows.

HarborFest 2016 T-Shirts

Buy your T-Shirt Before HarborFest BY BOBBIE POLAY

portwashington@antonmediagroup.com

To celebrate the 26th annual HarborFest on Sunday, June 5, the HarborFest Committee of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce has created commemorative T-shirts. The design was created by Richie Garofalo (Anthony’s World of Floors), who has designed every HarborFest shirt since the event began. The adult-sized shirts are garment-dyed sage green and the children’s sizes are garment-dyed denim blue. The design itself is one that everyone in Port will appreciate–a lighthouse with beacons proclaiming “Protecting the Bay since 1991” (the year HarborFest began). The shirts are sure to be popular for all who live here or need a special “hometown” gift, so the Chamber of Commerce has started to sell them before HarborFest. They are available

at the Chamber of Commerce office, 329 Main St. Of course, they will be on sale all day at HarborFest as well. They are just $12 each or two for $20– all sizes. The shirts are high-quality, all cotton and preshrunk. For more information about the T-shirts or HarborFest, call the Chamber of Commerce at 516-8836566 or email office@pwcoc.org.
