ALPACINO Making Magic On Broadway And his love affair with the theater

One of the greatest American actors, Al Pacino’s greatest love has always been live theater, a place where he found a home early on. A method actor who learned his craft as a student at the feet of coaches Charles Laughton and Lee Strasberg, the East Harlem native honed his chops at the HB Studio and The Actors Studio (of which he is currently a co-president along with Ellen Burstyn and Harvey Keitel). Before making his Broadway debut in 1969’s Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie? (for which he won a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Play), Pacino won an Obie Award for Best Actor for his role in Israel Horovitz’s The Indian Wants the Bronx the prior year. In subsequent decades, he’s returned to the stage while compiling quite the impressive filmography.

And while his stage roles have ranged from his involvement as part of Joseph Papp’s Shakespeare in the Park (Julius Caesar, The Merchant of Venice) to more personal projects (a 1985 revival of Heathcoate Williams’ 1969 Off-Broadway play The Local Stigmatic), the terse and often profane dialogue of renowned playwright David Mamet has made him the perfect foil for Pacino’s streetwise sensibilities and made the Chicago-born author a favorite creative partner for his New York City counterpart. The latest Mamet/Pacino project is the two-character Broadway play China Doll, which finds Pacino playing billionaire Mickey Ross alongside the lead’s assistant Carson, played

by Christopher Denham. It’s a role that Pacino told Playbill magazine he was very excited about.

“We’ve done four projects together and the opportunity to create a new character in the David Mamet canon was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. Dave gave me China Doll, a new play he had written for me, and it blew me away.” Here are five notable roles the former Bronx resident has excelled in whenever he’s returned to the Great White Way. 1. Does a Tiger Wear a Necktie?

In this three-act Don Petersen 1969 play, Pacino played a teen addict named Bickham, for which he won his first Tony. His portrayal of a junkie not only had Newsweek’s Jack Kroll describe Pacino as possessing “the choreography of a hood, with a poetic soul,” but prepped him to

play the lead heroin addict in the 1971 drama The Panic in Needle Park, which caught the attention of director Francis Ford Coppola. We all know what happened after that.

2. The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel Here, Pacino took on the lead role in this 1977 Broadway production of David Rabe’s Vietnam drama that landed him a second Tony Award and first for Best Leading Actor in a Play. Opening in a Saigon brothel, this production’s cast included ubiquitous movie character actor Lance Henriksen.

3. American Buffalo The first time Pacino and Mamet joined forces was in 1983 at the Booth Theatre when the former took on the lead role of Walter “Teach” Cole , which was originally played by Robert Duvall when the play made its Broadway debut in 1977.

4. The Merchant of Venice Having starred as Shylock in a 2004 film version of this Shakespeare classic alongside Jeremy Irons, Joseph Fiennes and Lynn Collins, Pacino reprised his role in a 2010 Shakespeare in the Park production that moved to Broadway the following year. Rounding out the cast was Lily Rabe (Steel Magnolias), Jesse L. Martin (Rent) and Ruben Santiago-Hudson (Jelly’s Last Jam). Pacino’s Shylock landed him a Tony nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Play.

5. Glengarry Glen Ross Even though this Mamet gem had its 1984 Broadway debut with Joe Mantegna playing hot-shot salesman Ricky Roma, the playwright’s highest profile drama is best known to the most casual Pacino fan from the 1992 film adaptation, where he took on the Roma role.

Pacino was a part of the 30th anniversary revival as part of a cast that included John C. McGinley, Richard Schiff and Bobby Cannavale. Pacino wound up taking on the role of sad-sack Shelly Levene, which had been played by Jack Lemmon in the film.

Dining out around Main Street in Flushing can be an intense experience. The eater is pushed to the brink of madness amid the chaotic clinking and clanging of plates and utensils in a number of busy, cash-only Asian restaurants. There’s a measure of adventure when experiencing these authentic spots, but there are times when a quiet escape from street-level discord is the preferred menu item.

Brasserie du Dragon, located inside the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel at 135-20 39th Ave., provides such an escape. Downtown Flushing is as close as it gets to stepping into China. Pork buns and soup dumplings are available at nearly every corner in loud, hawker-style settings. BrasserieT:4.24” counters that experience with a far more elegant ambiance. An

upscale restaurant serving new Hong Kong cuisine in a style reminiscent of a French restaurant, Brasserie combines innovative preparations with traditional recipes, ingredients and flavors.

Modern met innovative in Brasserie’s foie gras shrimp toast appetizer. Soft and crunchy, the shrimp toast boasted a good balance of texture and the foie gras contributed a creamy richness of roast duck flavor with a warm and melty, Brie cheese-like mouth feel. As the menu turns to entrées, the sweet and sour pork tenderloin with pomegranate was a crowd pleaser, featuring bite-sized morsels of wok-fried pork

and peppers. The pomegranate seeds dotted throughout the dish added sweetness to this textural experience. From the fish menu, Brasserie offers two Chilean sea STEVE MOSCO bass dishes, including one served with a sanpei sauce, a fragrant mix of sesame oil, soy sauce and rice wine. The sea bass flesh was light, flaky and delicious, but the star of this dish was that delectable fish skin.

Vegetarians have plenty of options as well, with choices that extend well beyond steamed broccoli.

Standouts include mixed supreme vegetable with bamboo pith and wild mushroom with snow peas and water chestnuts. Brasserie also has all-day dim sum, featuring chicken feet in black bean sauce, roast pork buns and an array of dumplings.

Brasserie’s most graceful offering has to be its array of fine Chinese teas. Delicately prepared tableside by the helpful staff, the teas are brewed to order and include green tea, lychee, peach and rose. The teas pair perfectly with Brasserie’s luxurious atmosphere—an inviting respite from the turbulent Flushing streets.

From Bulbs To Blossoms

Gone are the days of planting red tulips and yellow daffodils. A huge selection of colors, shapes and sizes await, so try something different.

Anemones are a very small bulb, which produce a daisy-like flower in a myriad of colors that look great in a bouquet.

Allium are giant balls of purple flowers that bloom atop tall green stalks. Not only do they make a great cut flower, they also give a whimsical feel to the garden.

Crocuses are a great option for a more natural look, since they tend to multiply rapidly and grow in almost any garden condition.

Hyacinths are known for their rich fragrance, making them a fantastic option along a walkway or near an entryway.

Tulips and daffodils are also more popular than ever. In addition to the traditional colors and varieties, beautiful double-flowering hybrids are available as are a multitude of colors from bright whites to pink and reds to black.

Plant now to tiptoe through the tulips this spring Fall’s not only a great time to plant trees and shrubs, it’s also the best time to start bulbs like tulips, daffodils, hyacinths and crocuses, which require several weeks of cold temperatures in order to produce flowers. So bury these bulbs before winter sets in and the ground freezes to ensure beautiful blooms in springtime.

Where to Plant?

Plant bulbs where you’ll enjoy seeing them in the spring—think garden beds in front of your house or outside the kitchen window. Most families use their homes differently in March and April than they do in July and August, so put some real thought into where to plant.

Another option to consider is creating a cutting garden out of sight that you can use to grow your own bouquets for inside your home.

Think about which rooms you’ll place the bouquets in and choose your bulb colors to complement those rooms.

How Deep?

The depth at which you plant your bulb depends on the bulb. Read each package carefully and use a bulb planter or measuring tape to plant to the proper depth. A good rule of thumb is to plant bulbs twice as deep as their size.

New York Mets third base coach Tim Teufel was as disappointed as anyone when the team made the final out against the Kansas City Royals in game five of the World Series, breaking fans’ hearts throughout Long Island and the greater Metropolitan area.

But Teufel, who experienced championship triumph with the team in 1986, believes the 2015 team has a lot to be proud of—and the fans have a lot to be thrilled about in terms of this team’s future.

“We didn’t play as well as we needed to [in the World Series] and that was disappointing,” he said.

“But from the fans’ standpoint, you have to realize that there is a lot to look forward to with this team.

The starting pitching is so strong that we expect to be in the mix again next season. This wasn’t a team that was just built to win now, it’s a team that was built to compete and be strong for multiple seasons. Our goal is to come back on top in the East next season and take it from there.”

Climbing to the top of the National League East in 2015 was no easy task, according to Teufel.

In fact, the Mets had to fight just to get into the projections of baseball professionals.

“No one predicted this at the beginning of the season,” said Teufel, who joined the Mets’ coaching staff in 2012. “Washington was projected to finish first with Miami second, then Atlanta, then us.”

According to Teufel, it was a September sweep against the Nationals in Washington that truly solidified this team’s tenacity.

“That really propelled us into the playoff mindset,” he said. “And [in the playoffs], we fought hard against the best pitchers in the National League

in [Clayton] Kershaw and [Zack] Greinke on the Dodgers. Then the Cubs with their elite hitting, they were supposed to absolutely whoop us, but we swept them and made it to the World Series.”

Once in the series, Teufel said the Royals’ experience the year prior was the real difference maker.

“They took advantage of every single mistake we made. Every fastball over the plate, every walk, every error; every possible scenario where we gave them an extra out, they capitalized and you have to respect that,” he said. “They didn’t seem like they were all that concerned losing an early lead or even a late-inning lead.”

With the 2015 season behind him, Teufel can begin to pick out a few of his more memorable moments. Topping the list was watching Mets skipper Terry Collins reach the playoffs for the first time after a long, distinguished career as a Major League manager.

“He deserved a shot,” said Teufel. “He provides a great working environment and players really respond to his style.”

Another top moment for Teufel was the return of Mets captain David Wright in Philadelphia on Aug. 24. The Mets third baseman socked an upper-deck home run on the first pitch he saw.

“The way he came back was so special,” he said. “We had been waiting three or four months for him to show up and when he did, he produced right away.

It’s great having him in the lineup, not only for his bat, but his heart.”

Teufel looks forward to a healthy Wright next season and coupled with the experience of losing the World Series, Teufel believes the team will be in an even better position to win next season.

“Having experience slows the heart rate down and puts you in a position to succeed,” he said. “It slows the game down.”

Fans will be able to slow the game down and return to the feeling of 1986 when the New York Mets hold a special reunion and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Mets’ “amazin” 1986 season.

Whenever Teufel gets back together with the ‘86 squad, he is brought back to those days—though to be sure, there are a few more gray hairs in the room.

“It’s a time warp,” he said. “We look at each and we’re all getting a bit older, but we can all still appreciate what we accomplished.”

As a second baseman with the Mets during those glory days, Teufel marvels that people who were young children watching him play at Shea Stadium are now adult season ticket holders watching him coach at Citi Field.

“It’s a generational thing,” he said. “1986 was a special year at the ballpark and to be able to bridge that generational gap is incredible.”

Teufel is optimistic about the 2016 season—and he assures fans that the team is highly motivated to bring that euphoric feeling of winning it all back to this franchise and its fans.

“To be on top, to be the best in the league, there is nothing like that,” he said. “That’s one regret I have. I think about getting together with the ‘86 team and talking about what we accomplished; I really would have loved for the 2015 team to get to do that. To bring the championship back for a new generation of Mets fans. Hopefully next year is our year.”
