ring your appetite for art to Feast for the Eyes, the newest Nassau County Museum of Art exhibit, drawn from a variety of media and guest-curated by Franklin Hill Perrell. Food is a necessity of life, but also fun. Eating can be ceremonial at a wedding, gourmet in a fine restaurant, humble as necessary, food at leisure or on the fly. Feast for the Eyes features food from farm, field, and recipes and cooking. “This is a brilliant curation by Franklin Hill Perrell,” said Nassau County Museum of Art Board President Angela Anton. “It’s fun and exciting, and it made me hungry.” The challenge arose: find artists who portray foods other than pastries and ice cream, which admittedly are the prettiest subjects. The exhibition features mostly 20th-century works, but a handful are older and some are more recent; surprisingly, almost all

food paintings depict dessert. “Food has always been celebrated in art,” said Perrell, also pointing out that food has been an inspiration from man’s earliest times. “Cavemen were portraying the hunt; the Greeks and Romans portrayed food and feasting.” Stylistically, the works range from a classic 1908 still life by William Merritt Chase to a 1973 Pop Art painting by Roy Lichtenstein. The New Yorker’s
Roz Chast pens humorous cartoons, while illustrator Al Hirschfeld produces Broadway restaurant drawings filled with celebrity diners. Included are also luscious depictions of food by artists such as Wayne Thiebaud and Ben Schonzeit; Judith Leiber’s fabulous jeweled evening bags in fruit and vegetable shapes; and Berenice Abbott’s photographs of food-related sights in New York. Curator Perrell pointed out that the exhibition includes quite a number of works by women artists. “They weren’t chosen because they were women, but because they were the highest-quality works.” A food show would not be complete without Warhol’s iconic

Other major artists in the exhibition are Audrey Flack, Henri Matisse, George Grosz, Red Grooms, Claes Oldenberg and Cindy Sherman. The exhibit runs through Sunday, Nov. 6. to pea-sized bits. In a separate bowl, whisk together the water, vinegar and egg. Add the liquid mixture to your dry ingredients and mix until incorporated with a fork. It will still be clumpy and crumbly. Do not overmix. Turn the mixture out on to a clean, floured surface and work the dough together with the heel of your hand until it comes together in a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour. To prepare the filling, sauté onions in olive oil until translucent. Add salt, spices, garlic, red pepper and sausage and cook until sausage is browned. Add diced peaches and sugar, stir and heat through before removing from heat. Chill the filling before making empanadas. To assemble, roll your dough to 1/8 inch thickness and cut into circles using a small plate or bowl. Wet the edge of the dough circle with water using your fingers or a brush and place a mound of filling in the center. Fold the dough over to seal the empanada, pressing along the edges to ensure a good seal. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. If desired, brush with cream or egg wash before baking for a glossy finish on the empanadas. To bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place in center rack and bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown. T
o the world at large, Joe Satriani has made his bones as an elite instrumentalist who has a following that’s voted him to the top of various readers polls in numerous guitar magazines. His six-string acumen is represented via a canon that is 15 studio albums strong, and gotten him gigs as a Mick Jagger hired hand and to step into the guitarist role in Deep Purple after Richie Blackmore stepped out. Satriani’s latest effort was last year’s Shockwave Supernova and while much of his musical output is of a solo nature, he’s also a member of Chickenfoot alongside Sammy Hagar, Van Halen founding member/bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. It’s with this quartet that the Westbury native managed to indulge in his passion for animation when they were guests on the Adult Swim cult cartoon Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Satriani was not only stoked to be able to make that claim to fame, (“I was so happy that we got invited to fictitiously be part of that crazy show”), but he’s currently working on a project with animators Brendon Small (Home Movies, Metalocalypse)

Satriani’s zeal for this particular art form comes as no surprise given the fact that he used the image from Silver Surfer #1 for his second studio album, 1987’s Surfing With the Alien. The following are some of Satriani’s favorite cartoons and why. Aqua Teen Hunger Force (20002015)/ Metalocalypse (2006-2015) “They’re both completely absurd, which is what I love about both of them. It takes the idea of animation to a level of unbelievability, but yet you laugh at it. And that’s the beauty of it. You can always get a camera and point it at someone standing on the sidewalk, and that’s reality and you see that every day. But animation can have you get past the visual reality and say that this guy

And while most of the selections on this list are the product of being conceived in the 1970s and 1980s when fashion sense was defined by bell bottoms, wide collars and shoulder pads, two nominees were a result of a bold-faced grab for coin in the go-go 1990s. To be sure, there have been plenty of crimes against style sense to parse through. These just happen to be the five most egregious.
New York Mets/Pittsburgh Pirates (1999)
Here, you get two-for-the-price-of-one as the Mets and Bucs decided to participate in a 1999 MLB promotion dubbed Turn Ahead the Clock. A Mariners marketing director named Kevin Martinez came up with the idea in 1998. ThenMariner Ken Griffey, Jr. helped come up with the uniform design, and it was well-received by Seattle fans. The following year, MLB got Century 21 Real Estate to sponsor it league-wide. As you can tell by these sartorial atrocities, the Mets and Bucs would have been better off going back in time during this go-round.

The Padres seem to have the market cornered on consistently ugly uniforms dating back to these late 1970s/early 1980s beauties distinguished by the combination of very dated bubble lettering for the logo and quite an interesting color combination of brown and yellow that will either have you thinking about a taco dinner or the aftermath a few hours later.
C.C. Sabathia Chicago White Sox (1976)
The White Sox then-owner was baseball impresario Bill Veeck (he of the pinch-hitting midget and Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park). His 1961 memoir was called Veeck as in Wreck, which is the word you can use to describe these uniforms that somehow managed to incorporate polo-style collars and for one game of a 1976 double-header against the Kansas City Royals, shorts.

Cleveland Indians (1975)
You would think that Frank Robinson being named the first black manager in the majors this year by the Tribe would have been big enough news in Cleveland. Instead, he had to contend with these all-red monstrosities that had the cumulative effect of having a large man like Boog Powell look like a huge tomato stepping into the batter’s box or a giant stick of Big Red gum with arms and legs.
These unis that were lovingly referred to as having a tequila sunrise design are a perfect example of being so garish that they’re actually quasi-cool. There was obviously something to their appeal as the Astros took the field in them for a decade-plus. The clash of yellow and orange was perfectly complemented by the strategic positioning of players’ numbers right in the crotch area.
