Fred Rogers’ Life Lessons

T

his year marks the 50th anniversary of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, when its first national episode aired on Feb. 19, 1968, on what was then National Education Television. Through the 912 episodes that were shot and the 31 seasons that it was on (the last episode was taped on Dec. 1, 2000), Fred Rogers left an indelible mark on pop culture, while more importantly, influencing generations of children to always do the right thing.

It’s an impact that not only led to the announcement that Tom Hanks was cast to play Rogers in the forthcoming biopic You Are My Friend, but also to the release of the documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor. Directed by Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom; Best of Enemies: Buckley vs. Vidal), this 93-minute film uses archival footage (Rogers died from stomach cancer on Feb. 27, 2003) of the show’s namesake along with interviews with a number of people including widow Joanne Rogers, sons James and John, along with cast members Francois Scarborough Clemmons (Officer Clemmons), Joe Negri (Handyman Negri) and David Newell (Mr. McFeely) to capture the appeal and essence of the late children’s television host. Neville produced this project along with Caryn Capotosto and Nicholas Ma, whose father Yo-Yo was a longtime friend of Rogers. The younger Ma appeared on the show along with his father and didn’t hesitate when asked if he wanted to be a part of Won’t You Be My Neighbor. Interestingly, the seeds for this documentary were planted during an interview Neville was doing with Ma’s father for another project he was working on. “[Director] Morgan [Neville] called me up two and a half years ago and asked me if I thought this would be a good idea. Before he’d even gotten the question out of his mouth, I said, ‘Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.’ The genesis for that was an interview he’d done about seven years ago with my father. [Neville] was doing a documentary called The Music of Strangers: Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble and he asked my dad how he learned how to be a public figure and my dad said Mr. Rogers taught him,” Ma explained.

“And that was a surprising enough answer that it was the first bread crumb on this trail of bread crumbs that led to the two of us joining forces with [producer] Caryn [Capotosto] and make this film. What I think is sweet is that when I told my mother that story, she laughed and said, ‘The only reason your father knew about Mr. Rogers is that he watched you and your sister watching it when you were children.

It was a safe place to leave the two of you when I was making dinner.’”

Born and raised in Latrobe, PA, Fred McFeely Rogers was an ordained Presbyterian minister who admitted in a later interview that he got into television after college “...because I hated it so, and I thought there’s some way of using this fabulous instrument to nurture those who would watch and listen.” After stints working on television in New York City and Toronto, Rogers returned to local station WQED in Pittsburgh in 1966 working on a version of the program that eventually evolved into Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. As someone whose gentle

and earnest persona was later satirized by the likes of Johnny Carson and Eddie Murphy, the Pennsylvania native’s progressive spirituality came across in a steely resolve to address issues like segregation at a time when the United States was in the throes of the Civil Rights Movement. One scene found Rogers responding to these issues in a 1969 episode where he invited African-American cast member Clemmons to join him in dipping their feet together in a wading pool. It was these subtle mores that Ma

feels viewers responded to and continues to resonate when viewers go back to the old episodes and this documentary in particular.

“I feel like he left an Easter egg in all of us who grew up with him and I think we’re finding that Easter egg now. Making this film and what I hope watching this film has done for viewers is to reignite that piece of you that knew that being kind and being good was the right thing to do. And no matter how hard it was to do this, there was strength in that versus weakness,” he said. “I think that’s something that is easy to lose sight of as we get older and the demands on our time and compromises in life come to the fore. [It] reminds us that even if doing the right thing is hard, the answer is easy.”

As to what Fred Rogers may have made of these divisive and confusing times, Ma is certain that Rogers would have appealed to the good in anyone to weather the storm. “[Fred] was not someone who was given to despair. But I think he would see these times as being very challenging. I think after 9/11, he strung together these ideas and was thanked for bringing [a message of] joy, life, hope, faith, pardon and love,” Ma said. “I think he would say that even in the most difficult of times, finding a way to bring those six things to the world is our obligation and our opportunity. Because, it’s with those six things that we have the courage to make change and the confidence to do that.”

Top Three Moments In The Neighborhood

A

s an ordained Presbyterian minister, Fred Rogers practiced a progressive style of spiritualism that found him at odds with conservative corners of his viewing audience. During his career, Rogers taped public-service announcements that helped children deal with processing news of war and tragedies. He also spoke in defense of the poor by portraying parents who couldn’t afford all that their children wanted or needed as hard-working people doing the best they could. He even advocated for legislation that would allow at least one parent in a military family to remain with his or her children rather than be deployed.

Along the way, his actions occasionally made a seismic impact.

RFK Episode (June 7, 1968) This aired two days after Robert F. Kennedy was murdered by Sirhan Sirhan, and coming on the heels of Martin Luther King, Jr. being gunned down a couple of months prior, Rogers

was concerned about the impact all the graphic news coverage might have on children. While the host was understandably uncomfortable and fidgety in addressing such a severe topic, he didn’t shy away from how children might react to this news by play-acting what they heard adults discussing or what they may have seen on television or newspapers. One of the most moving segments was when

the puppet Daniel Tiger asked Lady Aberlin, “What does assassination mean?,” and she responds that he must be hearing that word a lot lately.

When she explains that it means “somebody got killed in a surprising way,” Daniel expresses his displeasure that people are talking about it too much. Aberlin then responds that people talk about things that make them feel sad or scared. This episode is right up there with the time Big Bird found out that Mr. Hooper died.

Saving PBS (May 1, 1969) Rogers appeared before the United States Senate Subcommittee on Communications to support funding for PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The chairman of the subcommittee, Rhode Island Senator John. O. Pastore, was keen on slashing the PBS budget and had been impatiently dismissing a number of speakers who came to plead a case on behalf of the beleaguered channel. For six minutes, Rogers spoke of the need for social and emotional education

that public television provided and how alternative television programming like his Neighborhood helped encourage children to become happy and productive citizens, sometimes opposing less positive messages in the media and in popular culture. He even recited the lyrics to one of his songs to Pastore. The chairman admitted that the testimony had given him goosebumps and stated, “I think it’s wonderful. Looks like you just earned the $20 million.” The subsequent congressional appropriation, for 1971, increased PBS funding from $9 million to $22 million.

9/11 Episode (September 11, 2002) On the first anniversary of 9/11 in 2002, Rogers recorded a message for parents and those who care for young children. In the documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor, it was revealed that he had a difficult time finding a way to address this horrific event. Yet, he soldiered on and touched on the importance of finding healthy ways to help children deal with their feelings in ways that don’t hurt them or anyone else while helping to make the world a safer and better place. And also that given how confusing images from events like this can confuse young children, it’s important to keep in mind that these images might be too graphic and that parents, family members and people they don’t even know are working hard to keep them safe. Turning off the television, being open and honest and listening as well as talking are the best ways to weather something like 9/11. And lastly, it’s okay for children to feel sad, scared and angry, as long as they don’t hurt themselves or others.

In this way, they’re being given useful tools that will serve and help them to become the world’s future helpers.

4. Once cake is cooled, frost and arrange berries in a flag pattern, using raspberries (or strawberries) for stripes and blueberries in the top left corner for stars.

1. In a large bowl, beat cake mix, water, oil and eggs on medium speed for two minutes.

2. Heat oven to 350 degrees F for metal or glass pan or 325 degrees F for a dark or nonstick pan. Grease bottom of a 13” x 9” pan.

1 box yellow cake mix 1 container of vanilla frosting (or homemade whipped cream for a lighter option) 1 cup water ½ cup vegetable oil 3 eggs 2 cups ½ pint of fresh blueberries, washed and dried 2½ pints of fresh raspberries, washed and drained (If you prefer strawberries: 2½ pints of fresh strawberries, washed, hulled, halved, and patted dry)

1. Red layer: In a medium bowl, add 1 cup of boiling water to strawberry Jell-O mix, whisking until powder is completely dissolved.

cup choice of liquor to mixture and stir. Organized on a baking sheet for easy assembly, fill each of the plastic cups ⅓ full with Jell-O and refrigerate for 1 hour or until set.

2. White layer: In a medium bowl, add ½ cup of cold water to gelatin and stir. Add ½ cup of boiling water and whisk to combine. Add condensed milk (or coconut milk) and ½ cup of liquor and stir to combine.

Fill each of the plastic cups ⅓ full and refrigerate for 1 hour or until set.

3. Blue layer: Repeat same as red layer 4. Refrigerate Jell-O for 2-3 hours or until completely set. Serve as is or topped with whipped cream and sprinkles.

Fruity Firecracker Ice Pops Yields 12 pops 1¾ cups (about 14 ounces) Greek yogurt, divided 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 tablespoons honey 1¼ cups sliced fresh strawberries, divided 1¼ cups fresh or frozen blueberries, thawed, divided 12 freezer pop molds or 12 paper cups (3 ounces each) and wooden pop sticks 1. In a blender, add 1 cup of strawberries and 2 tablespoons of water; cover and process until blended. Remove to a small bowl. Chop remaining strawberries and add to strawberry mixture.

2. Add 1 cup of blueberries, 2 tablespoons of water and process until blended. Remove to another bowl and stir in remaining blueberries.

3. In a small bowl, mix together Greek yogurt, vanilla extract and honey. Set aside.

4. Assemble the molds by layering 1 tablespoon of the strawberry mixture, 2 tablespoons of yogurt and 1 tablespoon of the blueberry mixture. Top with popsicle sticks and freeze until firm.

ong Island Comic Con happened to be the final frontier last week at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. There, Trekkies of all ages lined up to meet the one and only William Shatner who is best known for playing James T. Kirk, captain of the USS Enterprise ship in the 1960s cult classic Star Trek.

The NBC science fiction television series, which took place in the Milky Way galaxy during the futuristic 2260s, has managed to turn itself into an unstoppable media franchise spawning television spinoffs, comic

books, action figures and countless theatrical films—something that Shatner is still amazed at till this very day.

“It’s absolutely miraculous,” said Shatner. “I don’t understand it but I’m going along with it. The reasons why Star Trek is 55 years old, I have no idea. It’s grand to be a part of such a unique event since it’s something that has never happened before in the world of show business.”

Star Trek ran on NBC for three seasons, which was comprised of only 79 episodes, from Sept. 1966 to June 1969. The series was canceled due to

• Advertisements encourage children to ask their parents to buy the products they see in commercials, regardless of whether they need them or not.

• Children are likely to focus on the negatives rather than the positive side of the messages.

• Flashy ads on TV, the Internet, magazines, etc. create a tendency for impulse shopping.

• Many advertisements involve dangerous stunts, which children imitate as they do not understand the warnings that come with the ads.

• With so many attractive commercials marketing junk foods and sugary beverages, these ads encourage unhealthy eating, which in turn has led to an increase in obesity, diabetes, heart problems and other conditions in young children.

• Child advertising may impact self-esteem, making kids feel inferior to their peers if they do not have the latest products seen in commercials.

• Sexually suggestive ads make children objectify women and allow them to think that looking or acting a certain way is the only way to make friends or be popular.

Although parents and other who care about kids can always organize and protest against deleterious commercials, I think that the advertising of everyday life might be even more effective.

The advertising of everyday life is comprised of those homespun

messages that parents, grandparents and other caregivers pass along to their children. Almost everyone can think of one or two from our growing up years. I believe that parents and other caring adults can be just as clever as Madison Avenue.

My mom, an antiques dealer known in the business as Antique Evelyn, was a businesswoman and collector of old advertising signs and tins. When I was about 12, Antique Evelyn brought home an old sign that read: “None of us in our business or social life can coast along on a reputation of past performances. It’s the good job we do today that counts.”

She framed the sign and placed it in a strategic place in the bathroom —just behind the toilet. This way my younger brother and I (and our dad) would come eye-to-eye with the sign several times a day, every day, year in and year out. According to my own calculations I read her “advertisement” at least 5,000 times during my teenage years.

Coaches have motivational slogans, preachers have spiritual sermons, teachers have instructional lessons and my mom had not-so-subliminal signs. These are the advertisements of everyday life. Some people might refer to this as imparting values.

Oh, and about mom’s sign; it hangs in my office, right next to my desk where I see it every day.

Life coach writes first book, empowering women of all ages

Pourmoradi’s book, XOXO, From a Girl Who Gets It

Now more than ever, young girls are growing up in a world where they are finally being encouraged to be both seen and heard. It is a vital move for the female gender, who have walked a long jouney from petticoats and parasols to getting down and dirty with the boys or going head-to-head with a fellow CEO. Melody Pourmoradi has made championing the female race a passion of hers for as long as she could remember. A life and wellness coach for the past 10 years, Pourmoradi’s first book, titled XOXO, From A Girl Who Gets It is an extension of the Girl Life Empowerment series, a curriculum for women who want to incorporate empowerment workshops into their own communities. Pourmoradi says she feels deeply connected to the core principle of the workshops that a book was a natural next step.

“Young girls will understand this language and it’s really for women as a whole. The messages are messages I wish I had access to growing up—a lot of empowering messages that teach us to love ourselves, be kind to ourselves and to go after our passion,” she said of her book, which is laid out in the form of a beautifully illustrated diary. “Each message comes in the form of a note, like ‘dear brilliant girl,’ and talks about superpowers. Each note is signed ‘xoxo, from a girl who gets it.’”

The author created the book in a way where it is not read cover to cover.

Instead, Pourmoradi encourages people to take their time, turn to a page and let the message on the page sink in. When it comes to drawing inspiration from everyday life, Pourmoradi will never find herself without a core group of women. She is surrounded by two sisters, two 12-year-old daughters and six nieces, a strong group of females that help spread her message.

“I get it because I had my own struggles as a child with anxiety and not fitting in,” said Pourmoradi, who moved to Canada from Iran when she was 3 years old. “I was visibly different and I had to find my own way of navigating that for myself. I want this book to allow girls to be able to step into their own power, be their own form of beautiful and not allow others to define

what that is for her.”

Pourmoradi considers XOXO, From A Girl Who Gets It a gift for herself because she gets to share it with other young girls, especially during an era where women as a whole are “on the cusp of something amazing in the world of female empowerment.”

“We’ve come so far, but there’s so much I see that is disheartening.

There’s so much focus on outer beauty and I want to do my part to assure young girls that there is no definition of beauty, you get to define it on your own terms,” she said. “You’re not alone in your struggles and you’ve got a team of sisters behind you who have been through these challenges and can seek some form of support.”

friends, family members, mentors and older, more experienced women (like a coach or therapist) is key in helping to release any stigmas associated with asking for support. Pourmoradi encourages reaching out and notes that in her personal experience, it is unbelievable the amount of people who reach back, wanting to help. She also sees the future in her twin daughters, saying that they are everything she wishes she could have been at their age.

“My girls really allow their hearts to lead them in everything they do,” said Pourmoradi. “I was taught to be a good girl and I hate that phrase today because what is a ‘good girl?’ I want to debunk a lot of myths and my girls are helping me further this movement of empowerment.”

Pourmoradi hopes that whoever picks up her book does so with the desire to flex her intuitive muscle.

Her book encourages both girls and women to listen to their inner voice.

More than anything, Pourmoradi wants every young girl to be able to know the magnitude and power of her own personal wisdom.

“I want to get them in touch with the voice in their own head and get them to know themselves on a whole new level,” she said.

Grenville Baker Club Celebrates June Gala

Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club held a Blue & White Gala for its 68th annual June Dance at The Creek Beach Club on June 2. More than 350 people were in attendance to applaud this year’s Hall of Fame inductees and the club’s New York State Youth of the Year, Larissa Izaguirre.

The induction marked the 10th anniversary of the club’s Hall of Fame. The list of inductees included Eileen Duffy, Elizabeth and Frank Ingrassia, and Jean and Scott Simensky. The Dance Committee, chaired by Andrea Cilmi, Libby Imperio, Dawn Kallman and Melissa Meister, worked hard to develop the gala’s theme for this fun event using a color scheme of blue and white mixed with accents of pink and orange throughout.

Cocktails were served against the backdrop of the Long Island Sound. During the cocktail hour, Judge Colin O’Donnell, a club alumnus, past president, and current board member, introduced each inductee and presented them with an award and a community brick to be placed at the club’s entrance. The honorees and our Youth of the Year also received a citation from Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Legislator Josh Lafazan and Senator Carl Marcellino.

After cocktails, dinner was served and the evening’s ceremonies began in the enormous tent decorated by Scarsella’s Florist of Syosset. Executive director Ramon Reyes spoke and thanked the community for supporting the club to make Locust Valley a wonderful place for children to grow up.

As the club’s last Youth of the Year, Colin O’Donnell introduced this year’s winner Larissa Izaguirre, who spoke about how much the club has meant to her and announced that she will be attending Gaucher College in Maryland this fall.

Two raffles were drawn: one for a Hermes Birkin Bag and one puzzle raffle for a $500 gift certificate to Americana Manhasset. The live auction items included: the Esperanza Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, the Twin Farms Resort in the Green Mountains of Vermont, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, a private dinner party at Maroni Cuisine, a cocktail party at La Joaillier Fine Jewelers, front row seats to a Dennis Basso Fashion Show and an elegant dinner and wine tasting at a private Feeks Lane address. Sponsorships were secured for the club’s college prep, basketball program, membership and programs, and the Thanksgiving dinner and holiday party. The silent auction included: signed NBA jerseys, golf foursomes at all the local clubs, tickets to sporting events, a U2 concert and Broadway’s Hello Dolly, Book of Mormon, A Bronx Tale, and Come From Away among other fun items.

Each year since the first June dance in 1950, this gala event has been Grenville Baker’s single largest fundraising event, making it possible for the club to fulfill its mission to inspire and enable all young people to reach their potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens and community leaders of tomorrow. After the live auction, an enthusiastic group of party goers danced the night away and this annual event was once again an enormous success.

Long Islanders fight for families separated at the border

President Donald Trump may have signed an executive order on June 20 stopping the separation of parents and children illegally entering at the Mexico-U.S. border, but that doesn’t mean that people have forgotten about the more than 2,300 youths placed into detention centers and foster care facilities across the country since the administration’s zero-tolerance policy took effect in April.

Among those facilities is MercyFirst in Syosset, a nonprofit organization, where eight children—ranging in age from 6 to 12—were taken last week.

The Syosset location was also the backdrop of a press conference organized by Congressional candidate Liuba Grechen Shirley, who criticized the president for allowing families to be separated.

“What has our country become when we tear babies away from their mothers? As a mom, my heart breaks for these families. There is no justification for the horror being inflicted on these young children by President Trump and his Republican Party,” said Shirley.

“This is state-sanctioned child abuse.”

Julia Fenster, board member of the National Organization for Women and founder of Action Together Long Island, added that the executive order was insufficient.

“We have to look at the details. How are we going to help these kids? We’re outraged when we hear of one child gone missing in this country. Now we’ve got kids scattered all over the country. We don’t know if they’ll ever find their parents,” Fenster said. “The executive order has to have a firm, concise and direct plan in place for what we’re going to do with the innocent kids who have been left victims of this crisis.”

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) representative told Anton Media Group that the agency will make “every effort to reunite the child with the parent once the parent’s immigration case has been adjudicated by U.S. Citizenship and

Immigration Services (USCIS) and/or the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR). ICE is committed to connecting family members as quickly as possible after separation so that parents know the location of their children and have regular communication with them in line with ICE policies and detention standards.”

According to a DHS fact sheet, children who are separated from their parents are transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Refugee Resettlement (HHS ORR), which works to locate a sponsor, such as a relative, guardian or close family friend. If none is found, the child is placed into temporary foster care or facilities, including the MercyFirst

Separated parents have been advised to call a 24/7 hotline to locate or communicate with a child in the custody of ORR. They can also call the ICE Detention Reporting and Information Line.

“ICE and ORR will work together to locate separated children, verify the parent/child relationship, and set up regular communication and removal coordination, if necessary,” said an ICE representative.

And though legislation has stopped any further families from being separated, the fate of the 2,300—including those at MercyFirst—is still up in the air. However, physicians and mental health professionals say that the trauma of separation will surely cause long-lasting emotional effects for these children.

“As a pediatrician, I can tell you that separating children from their parents goes against everything that we stand for,” said Dr. Eve Krief, local pediatrician and founder of Long Island Inclusive Communities Against Hate.

“Highly stressful situations like family separation can cause irreparable harm to a child, affecting long- and shortterm health, and carrying lifelong consequence. They will never trust anyone again. This should be a nonpartisan issue—everyone should be advocating for immediate reunification.”

Krief added that separating children

from their parents causes “toxic stress,” where affects brain development and can have lifelong health effects.

“The children are terrified. They don’t speak the language, they don’t know anybody…they’re exhibiting behavior you’d see in a child with PTSD or who has been abused,” Krief said.

Regina Barros, associate executive director at the North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, noted that while children may look fine on the outside, the trauma will be imprinted in their minds. The longer the child is away from their parent, the worse it will become.

“The longer it is, the worse it could be for them. You could end up with a person with anxiety or depression,” said Barros. She added that while parents and children wait to be reunited, mental health agencies and community groups should step in and help provide a sense of normalcy.

“These children, if they’re in a detention center, let them have natural, normal days,” she said. “We talk about trauma and disasters, you want to eat, sleep, and take good care of your health.”

On Sunday, June 24, Sen. Chuck Schumer called for the Trump administration to appoint a “czar” tasked with creating policies that would reunite children with their parents.

While the restaurant will not go live until July 12 at the latest, the supper club will begin serving food and drinks to patrons as soon as the initial act hits that first chord.

“Some of the most fun is during the creation of the menu,” said the chef. “It’s all about food and ambition. What can I create that people will love to eat, but also excite them enough to come back again and again?”

While the final menu is still coming together, a few of the dishes club-goers can expect include Tiger Shrimp served with quinoa pilaf, roasted cherry tomatoes and petite peas touched with a herb-butter emulsion.

Chef Tomo’s Tiger Shrimp dish is distinctively bold and sweet, with a firm texture—it adds up to a taste that some have dubbed “poor man’s lobster.”

With much more flavor than a red bell pepper but without any harsh heat, the piquillo pepper is sweet and slightly tart, making it a perfect match for the rich combination of braised short rib and the amazing celery root purée that boasts all the comfort of mashed potatoes. The dish is finished with the chef’s very own stock—a heady, hearty concoction made from chicken stock, sweet soy and lemongrass.

Meanwhile, served alongside pomme frites is Chef Tomo’s classic cheeseburger. Fully dressed, the burger is served on an artisan bun with special sauce. Eaters can also expect salads, along with snacks and shareable plates. And for dessert, the chef indulges visitors with many, including warm, airy and delectably enticing French donuts—mini beignets served with white chocolate and Nutella dips.

The growing menu’s influences borrow from Chef Tomo’s long and accomplished history in the kitchen, where he first cut his teeth with world-renowned Chef Christian Delouvrier at Lespinasse in New York City before landing in spots such as Alain Ducasse at the Essex House and Asiate in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, also in the city. Soon after that, Chef Tomo joined the Poll Restaurant Group, becoming the corporate executive chef. This foray made him intimately familiar with the Gold Coast area, as did his time as executive chef at Louie’s Grill and Liquors.

But it’s Chef Tomo’s emergence at My Father’s Place that could prove to be his most ambitious culinary rock opera to date.

“There is so much joy for me in cooking and eating,” he said.

“I want to bring that to people and I feel like this is the perfect place for people to get to know me and my food.”

Magazine Magnates Once upon a time, William Randolph Hearst Sr. and Condé Montrose Nast were the kings of Sands Point estates

T

he beautiful waterfront town of Port Washington is populated with sailboats, fresh seafood, luxurious shopping and grand estates. It is also saturated in literary history. Famed American publishers William Randolph Hearst and Condé Montrose Nast both have ties to one of Long Island’s wealthiest areas. Today, their publishing companies, Hearst Communications and Condé Nast, respectively, are the biggest mass media companies in the industry.

William Randolph Hearst Sr. was born on April 29, 1863. The businessman, politician and newspaper publisher became one of the greatest names of his time and left an indelible mark on media as we know it today. Hearst entered the publishing business in 1887 when his father gave him The San Francisco Journal. Upon a move to New York City, he acquired The New York Journal. A pioneer of yellow journalism, Hearst, who was now in command of at least 30 newspaper chains, influenced the popularity of human interest stories. The brand expanded to magazines, with leading titles such as Cosmopolitan and Good Housekeeping at the helm.

When The Great Gatsby was published in 1925, many believed that a certain Sands Point waterfront estate served as the inspiration for Jay Gatsby’s mansion in the book.

Hearst purchased said grand estate of Beacon Towers two years later, a buy that included the mansion, adjacent lighthouse and keeper’s house.

When Hearst purchased the estate—which he referred to as Joan’s Castle—for his wife Millicent, the residence underwent a transformation. Hearst introduced his renowned collection of global art, American furniture and French paintings into the home. But while he was filling his mansion on Long Island, Hearst was also busy

constructing one of the grandest palatial estates to date. His most famous is Hearst Castle, a Californian compound on oceanfront ranch land near the city of San Simeon.

Architect Julia Morgan was tasked to design the 90,000-square-foot behemoth home that included

56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 entertaining rooms, a private movie theater, tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, 127 acres of gardens, an airfield and the world’s largest zoo. Today, the sprawling palace is now a museum.

The publisher died on August 14, 1951, but 20 years earlier, had financial problems so great that he was forced to liquidate most of his assets. Dedicated to his love of the written word, Hearst kept all of his newspapers and magazines.

Born on March 26, 1873, 10 years after the birth of his future

competitor, Condé Montrose Nast was also an American publisher, businessman and entrepreneur.

Known for founding his own media company in Condé Nast, which includes Vogue, Vanity Fair and The New Yorker among other titles, publishing was a second career.

Nast attended Georgetown University before earning a law degree from Washington University in St. Louis in 1897. Years of law school had not lit enough of a fire in Nast, who then embarked on his magazine career by working at Collier’s Weekly with his former classmate Robert Collier.

Condé Nast was founded in 1909, four years after the publisher purchased Vogue, transforming it from a weekly newspaper publication into a monthly fashion and lifestyle magazine highlighting women. In 1916, the launch of British Vogue saw Nast become the first American publisher of an international publication, surpassing Hearst.

Around the same time Hearst purchased his Sands Point estate, Nast designed one of his own.

Known as Sandy Cay, Nast’s estate was designed in 1930 by Ferruccio Vitale. The vast landscaping and swimming pool highlight the mansion, which Nast was able to enjoy until his death on September 19, 1942. Unfortunately in 1954, the house burned to the ground, leaving only the garage.

Two magazine magnates. Two media companies. Readers are loyal to Elle or Vogue; Harper’s Bazaar or Vanity Fair. While the two publishing houses create content around the world, let us not forget their founders’ quiet little spots on Long Island where it all began to blossom.

“I would describe my style as modern, but with a definite influence of traditional and country. I have antiques and 18th-century Chippendale pieces mixed, but it’s mostly modern,” said Gold of his home. “It’s a definite desire to be comfortable. While Gold oversees marketing, sales and production, his partner, Williams, directs the design execution. Of his personal style, Williams says he accumulates quite an eclectic mix of décor in his home.

I’m a huge flea market and antiques person; I love things that have history that are not quite perfect,” he said, adding that it’s important to get a feel for a person when you enter their home. “I enjoy doing rooms where there’s lots of things on the book cases or coffee table; it’s interesting to see collections from childhood or travels and let people discover something about you that they may not have known before.”

“You don’t have to have a ton of color; some of the prettiest rooms are monochromatic, but there’s a lot of different ways to incorporate colors: pillows, artwork, fabrics, etc.” said Gold.

Referred to as the “masters of modern home furnishings,” both Gold and Williams believe the key to decorating a home in the modern contemporary style is simpler than one may think.

“It’s all about clean looking silhouettes and offering a variety of pieces that look very comfortable and at ease,” said Gold.

“We also know that people’s homes are very personal and not something we get a chance to redo constantly, so we try and make sure our pieces have a lifetime of looking good,” added Williams. “We want people to enjoy our pieces for a long time and not regret buying it.”

Just as the fashion industry is ever-changing, so is the design business, and both Gold and Williams recommend staying

away from trends when decorating a home. Instead, look for pieces that will become stylish and classic, as you never know what could inspire the lines of a table or curve of a chair.

“I find it exciting when something goes out of style and then 25 years later, it gets rediscovered and a whole new generation that didn’t grow up with it finds out about it,” said Williams. “I enjoy looking at that time period when pieces get to be in that period of their life and then make them feel fresh for today with new fabrics.”

“Being with others, you get inspired by talking with each other and looking at design through each other’s eyes,” said Gold.

It is easy to ascribe certain changes in behavior, nutrition or general health to “old age.” Old age is not a disease, however. Just because our pets are older, we shouldn’t assume they’ll be infirm. A senior dog or cat (starting at approximately age 7 years, 6 years in very large/giant breeds) should have a physical examination by a veterinarian at least twice a year, and blood work at least annually (more often if there are any health problems). Here are some signs your pet may not be feeling well.

Refusing walks/ difficulty moving

Moving slowly is often an indication of pain, particularly arthritis. Arthritis is very common in older dogs and cats.

We have many good treatments for arthritis that can help your companion lead a more comfortable life. Not all of them are drugs, and some of them are not very expensive. A dog who is refusing walks is most likely not feeling well, and there’s no reason his/her age should prevent us from trying to help.

Changes in appetite

Significant changes in appetite are also a potential indicator of

illness. Everything from hormonal imbalances (thyroid, adrenal gland dysfunction), to kidney disease, to inflammatory bowel disease, to cancer, can be associated with changes in food intake. Most of these are easily treated, some less so. However, if the effort is made to identify the cause of the problem, we can at least get a sense of how to make the patient happier and more comfortable, and avoid treating problems that aren’t there.

Change in water intake

Related to food intake is the issue of water intake. Older dogs and cats don’t change their water intake just because they’re old—or bored. There is usually some physical component underlying this change. Kidney disease can be associated with increased water intake at the beginning, and decreased water intake later on. Increased water intake is associated with diabetes, hormone gland dysfunction and infections.

Decreased water intake can be associated with heart disease, cancer and pain.

Changes in vision/ hearing

Eyesight and hearing can decline as cats and dogs age, just as they can in people. If you suspect visual problems, visit your veterinarian and have them take a look at the area on and around the retina. Retinal hemorrhage is associated with high blood pressure, as well as certain viral diseases. If an animal has trouble seeing, it is important to keep everything in the house in the same place (furniture, food bowls).

Regarding hearing in the older dog or cat, the cause is indeed most likely age-related. There are physical causes of hearing loss other than age, but they are more common in younger animals.

Unusual new behaviors

One thing that is specifically related to age is the incidence of new behaviors suggesting confusion, or unfamiliarity with everyday places or activities.

Many of these animals will vocalize, often in the middle of the night and for no apparent reason, and then stop as

soon as they see their person or feel their touch. This is referred to as cognitive dysfunction. It is as if the pet suddenly does not remember where he or she is, or what he or she should do next. Some things that can be helpful: leaving on a nightlight, particularly in the room or hallway where the problem usually occurs; use of a spray or diffuser that releases dog or cat pheromone (an essential odor that only members of the same species can smell, and that can be very calming); having a strict routine at night; and leaving open access for the dog or cat to their persons.

Give your pet all the TLC you can, and they’ll return the favor.

Increased sleeping

It is not “normal” for animals to start sleeping more than they usually do. Increased sleeping is often a clue that the dog or cat is not feeling well.

Hiding, particularly in cats, is almost always an indication of illness (unless they’re avoiding a toddler or a new dog). Metabolic diseases are often the cause of increased sleeping, as is cardiac disease.

Middle school and high school students are invited to explore their passion for the arts with fun and focus this summer at Long Island High School for the Art’s Summer Arts Academy. Students select their area of focus in Music, Dance, Theater,

The Summer Arts Academy is a four-week program that runs from Monday, July 2, through Friday, July 27, and new for this year, families can choose to send their students for one, two, three or four weeks. Camp hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and

also new for this year: extended care in both the morning (7 to 9 a.m.) and afternoon (3 to 5 p.m.).

eep within the consciousness of every single person, no matter the ethnicity, there lies the memory of meals prepared by someone from a long-outgrown past. Food is a common thread across borders, and it is that spirit of shared eating experiences that drives Athenian Greek Taverna in Commack.

Opened in 1995 and run by co-owner brothers John and chef Alex Homenides, the Athenian specializes in authentic Greek cuisine prepared in a way that pays homage to the past while evolving with the tastes of today’s restaurant-going public. Chef Alex learned his old-world style of cooking from the generation before him, who brought to this country a way of food preparation that emphasizes simple techniques married with fresh ingredients.

“In Greek cuisine, less is more.

Simple preparations is key,” said Alex, adding that Greek cuisine is built on a foundation of four simple ingredients: olive oil, lemon, salt/ pepper and oregano. “It’s straight forward and it’s healthy. This is why people in Greece are so healthy and happy and live such long lives.”

The menu at the Athenian takes that philosophy and runs with it. It’s dotted with carefully curated Greek classics like meats and seafood, veggies and grains, along with dips, spreads and imported cheese—all prepared by the Athenian kitchen crew with Alex’s standard for homemade authenticity leading the way.

Perhaps the most genuine dishes at the Athenian are the simplest.

Yiayia’s Eggplant, for example, is merely fresh eggplant baked and topped with tomato sauce and three cheeses. But the simplicity belies deep and complex flavors, especially in the sauce—you can taste the years of practice that must’ve gone into it.

Another simple dish that’s elevated in flavor at the Athenian is the gigantes, or classic Greek giant butter beans. These monsters of the bean world are robust, yet tender, as they swim in tomatoes, onions and olive oil. It’s a dish you could imagine being enjoyed just as much 100 years ago. The same can be said

for the grilled halloumi, a Cypriot cheese grilled with extra virgin olive oil. Unlike mozzarella, which falls apart at extreme heat, halloumi stays strong—it’s firm and salty, with a taste that is so incredibly unique, as the saltiness fades into a vigorously savory bite.

Then there’s the grilled octopus, a dish so singular in flavor and texture that it almost defies description and begs to be experienced. Alex nets top-of-the-line octopus flown in daily and the process begins in the morning with the octopus cooking with a mirepoix and red wine until fork tender. The chef then chills it and when it’s ordered, it hits the grill with lemon and olive oil. What results is a flavor that is almost a mix between chicken and a hint of clams—it is meaty, yet delicate, but also subtly oceanic and a texture that is incredibly tender.

Have Some Summer Common Sense

ummer is a great time to relax and enjoy the great outdoors with your family and friends. But if you lack any sort of common sense, that great time will most likely turn into a dud.

Here are some tips to stay safe this summer.

You can get a sunburn any time during the year—even during the cold winter months. However, sunburns are a lot more painful and prevalent during the summer. It’s always a good idea to apply sunscreen year round to protect your skin, which can lead to more problems like skin cancer if you don’t. With the sun’s rays being at their strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Your skin will thank you later.

It’s extremely pertinent to stay hydrated during the summer, especially since you lose a lot of your body’s water through sweat. Plus, some people are more

sensitive to the sun’s stronger rays during the summer months making heatstroke and heat exhaustion a possibility. Dehydration is just one cause of both of those serious health issues. It’s difficult to pinpoint a specific amount of water someone should drink each day during the summer because everyone is different. However, health officials recommend that a person should drink an average of eight 8-ounce glasses a day.

Remember to drink that water, folks.

Once the summer months roll in, we all know that it’s time to bust out the fireworks.

Although fireworks look pretty when they light up the night’s sky, there’s nothing pretty about blowing one of your appendages off. When it comes to fireworks, it’s always good to be on the safe side. The National Council of Firework Safety recommends that people should light one firework at a time and then quickly move away and to never relight a dud firework. It’s also a bad idea to experiment with

homemade fireworks because of their unpredictability. Lastly, never carry fireworks in your pocket or shoot them into metal or glass containers. According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, in 2016 fireworks were involved in an estimated 11,100 injuries in U.S. hospital emergency departments.

are news reports of children and adults drowning because they weren’t supervised or because they didn’t listen to beach rules. Rip currents are usually the main culprit for beach drownings. Rip currents are powerful, channeled currents of water flowing away from the shore that quickly pull swimmers out to sea. If caught in one, fighting it makes it worse.

Swim parallel to the shore and swim back to land at an angle. According to the National Oceanic and

Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), rip currents are the reason behind more than 80 percent of lifeguard rescues. Always remember to swim at beaches with lifeguard supervision. Also, know your limits. If you know you can’t swim in a certain amount of feet of water, don’t do it. Don’t put your life and the lifeguard’s life at risk.

When the weather warms up, many families head outside for hikes or for camping. Unfortunately, many different bugs such as ticks come out as well. Ticks are most active from April to September—a prime time for Lyme disease. Ticks are present throughout the majority of the eastern United States and tend to live in wooded areas along forest trails. If you don’t want Lyme disease, then make sure to cover up and

ew York sports fans have seen more change in the last nine months than they’ve seen in the last three decades. Of the eight franchises in the four major sports, six teams have fired their head coach and hired a new one since October 1.

The ultimate task hanging over the heads of these coaches is delivering a championship back to the Empire State. Here’s a look at each of these head coaches’ backgrounds and what their teams need to improve on in order to achieve that goal.

Former Manager: Joe Girardi New Manager: Aaron Boone As a former player for the Yankees, Aaron Boone moved on from his broadcasting career at ESPN to take the Yankees manager job in December and was tasked with managing one of the most hyped teams in baseball. Despite having no major coaching experience, Boone has done well out of the gate.

Despite a slow 9-9 start, the Yankees have become a contender in the AL Pennant race as they lead the league in home runs and are second in ERA. While Boone should be happy about the success, the team should continue improving on hitting and avoiding strikeouts.

New York Mets

New York Giants

Former Manager: Terry Collins New Manager: Mickey Callaway Mickey Callaway came to the New York Mets after several years in the Cleveland Indians organization, including five seasons as their pitching coach. He helped the team lead the American League in strikeouts for four straight seasons and was considered an important role in the Indians’ 2016 World Series run.

Unfortunately, that same success has yet to translate to the Mets. After a strong 11-1 start, the Mets have become one of the worst teams in the National League. What doesn’t help is, despite the big-name hitters in the club, they are last in the league in hits.

Former Coach: Ben McAdoo New Coach: Pat Shurmur Pat Shurmur earned a head coaching job after a very successful season with the Minnesota Vikings, where he helped mold Case Keenum into a star and an offense into a strong unit as the team averaged 357 yards per game all the way to the NFC Championship. His previous head coaching stint with the Cleveland Browns did not end well (9-23 in two seasons from 2011-12), but he has a second opportunity to be a leader of a team. Now with the Rangers, he’s looking to make a young team successful in his first year at the helm. Former Coach: Jeff Hornacek New Coach: David Fizdale After 18 years as an assistant, David Fizdale was hired as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies for two seasons. His first season was a decent one, as they finished 43-39 in the Southwest division and earned a playoff berth for a seventh straight year.

Unfortunately, he was fired early on in the 2017-18 season after an eight-game losing streak, but now he gets a chance to redeem himself with the Knicks.

The team hasn’t had success in a long time, but Fizdale can start by getting the team’s field goal and three-point shooting into a more reasonable range compared to last year.

New York Islanders

Former Coach: Doug Weight New Coach: Barry Trotz Barry Trotz is coming off the best year of his head coaching career, winning the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals. After a contract dispute, he left Washington to pursue a different opportunity.

Now in New York, he must make drastic changes to a defense that had the most goals scored on them and the most shot attempts against them. He may also need to deal with losing center and team captain John Tavares to free agency.
