Apatow’s Fave Garry Shandling Projects

ith the release of the HBO documentary The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, producer/director Judd Apatow was able to create an in-depth and incredibly moving portrait of this late comedic legend in this two-part, four-and-half-hour project. Granted permission by the Shandling estate to use material drawn from the comic’s journals that he’d been keeping since 1977, along with conversations with more than 40 friends including Jim Carrey, Sara Silverman and Jerry Seinfeld, Apatow and editor Joe Beshenkovsky (Montage of Hate; Jane) wove together a film that captures the spiritual and self-aware side of Shandling that few people knew.

Apatow’s relationship with the Chicago native goes back to the early 1990s, when the young 20-something Syosset native was hired to write jokes for Shandling’s inaugural stint hosting the 1991 Grammys. Over time, Apatow admits a deep bond developed between the two (“All along the way, he was a real older brother/fatherly figure to me. He was just there for me for every important moment in my life.”). These were three of Apatow’s favorite projects he worked on with Shandling.

And Garry pulled off a fantastic ending— one of the best in comedy history. He wrote the episode with Peter Tolan. It was a remarkable accomplishment.”

hile the trendy thing to do is take restaurant-quality food and place it on a truck, halal carts are going in the opposite direction.

The venerable New York City street grub that’s kept quick-lunch seekers fed for decades is beginning to land in storefronts, with hawkers of that glorious combination of meat, rice, salad, pita, white sauce and hot sauce in a foil container opening brick-and-mortar eateries. And they are spreading fast— with chains becoming regular sights in strip malls throughout the island.

One of the most recognizable halal cart names to recently open an actual quick-serve establishment is The Halal Guys. Founded in 1990 as a hot dog cart on the southeast corner of 53rd Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, the menu expanded quickly to include chicken, gyro meat, rice and pita once

the owner realized the classic dirty water dog was not a satisfying meal.

The Halal Guys now have carts and stores all over the world, with one of the newest locations opening in Farmingdale.

Sandwiched between a Panera and a Chipotle, the Farmingdale Halal Guys (911 Broadhollow Rd.) sits on Route 110 near Republic Airport slinging the same simple favorites that have made it a household name in the halal world—sandwiches and platters with basically the same ingredients, along with hummus, baba ganouj and falafel.

The most popular order—and rightly so—is the combo platter. It consists of chicken, beef gyro, rice, a simple salad, pillowy pita triangles and a generous dousing of white sauce with a streak or two of fiery hot sauce. Serving The Masters Of The Universe Jean Kelly gives hope to Long Island’s homeless

Jean Kelly could have never imagined that a meeting in a home in Uniondale would change the course of her life. While the Glen Cove native joined that initial meeting of the Interfaith Nutrition Network (INN) as a concerned volunteer, in 1993 she left her career in advertising and marketing to take over as the nonprofit organization’s executive director. It’s a title she’s now held for 25 years.

“We’re helping communities treat people with dignity and respect, and provide for whatever they need without asking any questions,” said Kelly. “It’s tremendously rewarding. It’s such an incredible privilege.”

What began as a single soup kitchen operating out of a church in Hempstead in 1983 has grown into a network of 10 independently run soup kitchens in 14 locations across Long Island. Their flagship location in Hempstead is their largest, serving

300 to 400 guests every day. The INN also operates three emergency shelters—two for families and one for single men—and 20 long-term housing apartments.

Everything the INN does, whether it’s opening a soup kitchen, offering shower facilities, a free clothing boutique, or long-term housing, is in response to the needs they see. Women have played an important role in the INN’s mission; many of the volunteers and staff members are female.

“Women seem to have a natural caregiving tendency,” Kelly said.

up and they have finished whatever career they’re in, so many are incredibly skilled and competent and need to feel a sense of fulfillment and purpose like everyone does.”

It takes more than 1,500 volunteers to keep the INN’s operations running and Kelly said that many—whether they have been superintendents, businessowners, etc.—have said volunteering has been the most fulfilling work they’ve done.

“I find that hard to believe at first, but I believe it’s because we’re all here to be of service,” Kelly said. “This type of service is providing basic needs and it’s the Mount Everest of service.

There’s nothing better that you can do than to keep someone alive.”

Kelly has countless stories of how INN volunteers have made a difference in someone’s life. She noted one example of how a man in Suffolk County had been planning to take his own life and that day he stepped into the INN for dinner.

“He had been on the street for 15 or 16 years and had planned everything out. He came to our soup kitchen the day he was going to kill himself, and somebody gave him a piece of chocolate cake and remembered his name. He was so shocked, he couldn’t believe anyone remembered who he was. He got into rehab and turned his life around,” said Kelly. “Each day we’re interacting with somebody and one little look or smile can be life-changing.

We see that every day.”

Having worked with the hungry and homeless population for more than 30 years, Kelly said that it’s a group that is often underestimated.

“I feel that this population are the masters of the universe. They have such knowledge and strength. They may not have their basic needs but they’re surviving,” said Kelly. “Their resiliency is inspiring to me. They still have an incredible sense of humor and it’s been such a privilege to know so many of the masters of the universe walking in our midst.”

Jean Kelly Not only has the INN shaped Kelly’s professional life, but her personal one as well. It was in her early days as a volunteer coordinator that she met her husband Rob Kammerer, a fellow volunteer at the INN. The two are a perfect complement to each other, with Kammerer, a physics professor at Vaughn College, serving on the board of directors as chair of the development committee and chairing the organization’s largest fundraiser, the INNkeeper’s Ball.

“We both wanted to be our own person and we allow each other to be their own person,” Kelly said. “We’ve been truly honored and blessed to be of service to people who have shown up, and to be able to do this together is an additional blessing.”

While Kelly’s leadership—demonstrated first and foremost by her own willingness to serve—has played a key role in the INN’s ability to help the masses, she’s quick to point out it’s the volunteers that have made the difference.

“Without the thoughtfulness of Long Islanders of all faiths and backgrounds, The INN would never have started nor would it be able to be present each day to greet everyone who shows up in need with dignity, respect and unconditional love,” said Kelly. “Despite all the divisions that exist within society today there is still an innate goodness in all of our neighbors here on Long Island which continues to inspire and motivate all of us to be there when anyone is suffering from lack of their basic necessities. Together we can continue to make miracles happen and offer each other hope and inspiration.”

Chilean Theater Debuts At Children’s Museum

Long Island audiences are about to witness the inventive theater that has entertained audiences across Europe, Asia and South America, when the Chilean company Teatro de Ocasión brings “One Morning I Left...” to the Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) Theater on its debut U.S. tour. The company, recognized for its dynamic early childhood productions, will be in residence for four performances on April 6 and 7, coinciding with the spring break school holiday.

Todd Frazier: “You have a guy in Todd Frazier who is a very good third baseman; he’s not just an average or below-average third baseman, he’s not a guy who hasn’t played a lot of third base. The Zen Diaries Of Garry Shandling Judd Apatow’s cinematic eulogy to his mentor

There’s no question that Judd Apatow occupies quite the creative catbird seat in Hollywood. He’s not only directed (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Trainwreck) and produced (Superbad, Bridesmaids, The Big Sick) his fair share of blockbuster films, but he’s made his mark on network (Freaks and Geeks, The Ben Stiller Show) and pay cable (Girls, Crashing). That said, nothing strikes as close to home as his forthcoming documentary The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, a four-and-ahalf-hour, two-part documentary set to air on HBO. This project goes beyond being a mere film about the late comedic genius. Its subject was also Apatow’s close friend and a longtime mentor who not only gave him his first major break writing and directing on Shandling’s storied series The Larry Sanders Show, but continues to influence the Syosset native to this day. Having shot conversations with more than 40 of the comic’s friends and family, Apatow fleshed out the story with intimate footage (much of which came from the director’s own archives) and excerpts from Shandling’s personal journals dating back to the late 1970s.

The seeds for this project were planted during the memorial service, (parts of which are in the film), which Apatow was asked to help out with.

“When he died, the estate asked me if I wanted to put together the memorial service,” Apatow explained. “So I lined up some speakers and a few musicians played. Then I put together a few short documentaries on Garry on a few different subjects and different eras.

As I was doing it, I realized that I could turn it into a whole documentary. So I spent about a year just looking for, and at, footage and then another almost a year, editing with our editor, Joe Beshenkovsky (Montage of Heck, Jane), who is a real genius.”

The end result is a chronological trip through Shandling’s life, starting off with his family in Chicago, before his parents Irving Shandling and Muriel Estelle (née Singer) along with older brother Barry moved to Arizona so the latter could receive treatment for cystic fibrosis.

The death of his sibling when Shandling was 10 had a devastating effect on him, but was little known to even the closest of friends.

Apatow masterfully traces his late friend’s evolution as a comedic force and mirrors how self-reflective Shandling was throughout his life, particularly once Eastern philosophy and

Buddhism became a central part of his core belief system. And while Apatow was initially uncomfortable immersing himself in the film so soon after his friend’s death, he found it helped with the grieving process.

“In the beginning, it was hard to listen to Garry speak so much and to review all the tapes. But then, I got used to it and really started to enjoy being with him, laughing with him and discovering new parts to his life that I didn’t know anything about. In a weird way, I feel like I became better friends with him by learning so much,” he explained. “The most important thing that I learned was that Garry spent a lifetime using Eastern spirituality and Buddhism to help him get through things. He used the journals as a way of talking to himself. A lot of it is him connecting to a higher voice and giving himself advice. And usually the advice was about Buddhist ideas, such as non-attachment, letting go of your ego, kindness and he used those concepts in his comedy as well. Later in his life, in his journals he wrote about being a mentor. I thought he was just a nice man who was available to people if they needed advice.

And it was a very conscious choice to be a more giving person and I found that to be very powerful.”

For the viewer, Zen Diaries offers insight into the complexity beyond Shandling’s greatness as a comic and more importantly, as a person. Apatow shares Shandling’s triumphs (going from writing for Sanford and Son to creating a pair of storied shows) to struggles both professional (suing his former manager Brad Grey) and personal (a bout with a hyper-parathyroid glandular problem later in life). It all ends up being a very immersive experience that reflects how Apatow felt about his dear friend.

Helping Your Child Face Down Bullies

Childhood bullying has become such a widespread problem that one Wisconsin community even proposed levying $1,000 fines against the parents of bullies.

In most cases, though, bullied children can’t count on help from their city councils, so it’s often up to their parents to help them find solutions.

In extreme situations, fighting back might be the answer, but that should be a last resort, says a martial arts instructor who has taught young people how to face bullies.

You can learn to bob and weave, and to deliver punishing blows, and when it comes to self defense that’s all very important, but what is perhaps even more important is the confidence that comes with martial arts training. That confidence alone is often enough to help you stand up to bullies without ever actually fighting them.

Red Cross Seeks Volunteers The American Red Cross on Long Island invites all Long Islanders to volunteer their time and help save lives at the Sound the Alarm, Save a Life home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events on Sunday, April 29, and Friday, May 11, across Nassau and Suffolk County.

“Sound the Alarm on Long Island will be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries from home fires,” said Neela Lockel, CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island. “By volunteering with the Red Cross, you can truly make a difference in someone’s life. Please join us and help Sound the Alarm to end home fires by volunteering to help your neighbors on Long Island this April 29 or May 11.”

The Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events on Long Island are made possible through the generous support of companies like Bridgehampton National Bank, Casual Home Worldwide, NationalGrid, Northwell Health, NYU Winthrop Hospital and PSEGLongIsland.

Elected officials are also supporting these efforts, serving as Sound the Alarm Champions to help make their communities safer.

Many will volunteer personally on these installation days to install smoke detectors and provide fire safety education to their neighbors.

Current champions include Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Nassau County Legislator and Minority Leader Kevin Abrahams, and Suffolk County Legislator Monica Martinez.

ith the final opportunity for preseason tune-ups now in the rearview mirror, the New York Mets will head into the 2018 MLB season with the hopes of reverting to their winning ways of not so long ago.
