EDITOR’S PICKS – OUTDOOR

What To Do Outdoors

are some of Anton Media Group editors’ favorite picks Hereof things to do outdoors and close to home.

– Compiled by Christy Hinko

The Waterfront Center

The Waterfront Center is an independent, nonprofit organization working in partnership with the Town of Oyster Bay to provide access for all to educational and recreational programs that will excite students about the marine environment. The Waterfront Center provides sailing lessons, school field trips, summer programs for children, sails aboard the National Historic Landmark oyster sloop Christeen and rentals of sailboats, kayaks and

Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park

Long Island’s public arboretum and historic site is located in Oyster Bay. Coe Hall at Planting Fields (Photo by Christy Hinko) A former Gold Coast estate, the arboretum is comprised of 409 acres of greenhouses, rolling lawns, formal gardens, woodland paths and outstanding plant collections. The original historic estate buildings remain including the 65-room Tudor Revival mansion, Coe Hall, which is open for tours spring through fall. The grounds, landscaped by the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, MA, are spectacularly beautiful year round. Educational programs are offered for children and adults. Planting Fields is an ideal location for wedding photography. Visit www.plantingfields.org for more information.

Fire Island Lighthouse

The Fire Island Lighthouse is a visible landmark on the Great South Bay, on the western end of Fire Island, a barrier island off the southern coast of Long Island. The Fire Island lighthouse is located Lighthouse (Photo by within Fire Island National Seashore and Christy Hinko) just to the east of Robert Moses State Park. The lighthouse can be accessed by a short walk from parking field 5 at Robert Moses State Park. It is open to the public daily. Tower tours are available for a small fee. Visit www.fireislandlighthouse.com for more information.

bicycles. It is located on the north shore between Beekman Beach and Stand up paddleboarding Theodore at the Waterfront Center in Roosevelt Oyster Bay (Photo courtesy Park on the of the Waterfront Center) site of the former Jakobson Shipyard. Visit www.thewaterfrontcenter.org for more information.

Old Westbury Gardens

The former estate of John S. and Margarita Grace Phipps, and today site of numerous concerts, lectures, special events, and feature films, Old Westbury Gardens is perhaps the most recognizable of all Gold Coast properties. Its centerpiece is Westbury House, a Charles II-style mansion where the Phipps family lived for 50 years. The 160-acre property also features world-renowned gardens with sweeping lawns, woods, ponds and lakes, and more than 100 species of trees. Tour the palatial home, walk its grounds, and enjoy a window into

Queens County Farm Museum

The Queens County Farm Museum is a working farm, located in Floral Park, Queens. The site features restored farm buildings from three different centuries, a greenhouse, planting fields, livestock and various examples of vintage farm equipment. The museum includes the Adriance Farmhouse which is a New York City Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. Free guided tours of the farmhouse are offered to the public Saturdays and Sundays year-round. Hayrides are offered on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) from April through October. An on-site seasonal farmstand featuring Queens Farm vegetables takes place every Wednesday through Sunday from June through October. Visit queensfarm.org for more information.

Sagamore Hill National Historic Site From 1902 to 1908, when Theodore Roosevelt served as the 26th president of the United States, this was the “Summer White House.” He lived there until his death in 1919, and it remains just as it was when he was in residence—moose heads and all. The grounds include an Audubon Center and songbird

sanctuary. History buff or not, the Roosevelt home is not to be missed. And because the National Parks Service manages it, you don’t have to travel all the way to Yellowstone to see a real life ranger. Due to renovation, the site will reopen on July 12. Visit www.nps.gov/ sahi for more information.

Old Westbury Gardens

Long Island’s Gilded Age. Visit www. oldwestburygardens.org for more information.

LI Adventure Park

Within seven acres of woodland you will find an amazing “aerial forest park.” Test your bridge-crossing and ziplining skills. Course trails are marked for beginners, interme- (Photo courtesy of Long Island diate climbers and Adventure Park) challenging or most advanced. You’ll receive a safety orientation before your climb and safety harness and locks are always engaged. For ages 7 and up. Visit longislandadventurepark.org for more information.

Sands Point Park and Preserve

The Sands Point Park and Preserve features three castle-like mansions; Hempstead House, Castle Gould, and Falaise. Falaise, built by Harry S. Guggenheim, is open to the public and has many distinctive architectural features including thickly mortared walls, steeply pitched tile roofs and a round tower that echoes a medieval fortress. Furnished with antiques dating back to the 16th century, Falaise also boasts paintings from the Renaissance, and several important pieces of modern art. Visit www.thesandspointpreserve. com for more information.

Old Bethpage Village Restoration

Step back in time and experience life in a recreated mid-19th-century American village. The 209-acre Old Bethpage Village Restoration includes 51 historic buildings such as an inn, a store and a church. All were transported from other areas of Long Island. Treasured for its accurate depictions of pre-Civil War life, actors in period costume bring the village to life with craft demonstrations and farm work. Visit www.nassaucountyny.gov/2850/ oldbethpage-village-restoration for more information.

Eisenhower Park

A 930-acre oasis of open space and recreation in the heart of Nassau County, Eisenhower Park is one of the largest public spaces in the New York metropolitan area—larger, in fact, than Central Park. The park offers a full range of athletic and family activities, including one of the finest swimming facilities in the U.S., a major golf facility, dozens of athletic fields and courts, picnic areas, summertime entertainment, playgrounds, fitness trails, ice skating rink, dining and more. Visit www.nassaucountyny. gov/2797/ eisenhower-park for more information.

Spring Into Summer With Tropical ‘Cheesecake’

15B

ronically, I, a person whose first book was a dessert cookbook, have two sons who don’t really care much for sweets—and they especially don’t really care much for cake. In another twist of irony, I have one son who loves cheesecake and yet is vegan. It is with him in mind that I created this gluten-free vegan tropical “cheesecake”. Not only is he a vegan, he is gluten-free and off of refined sugar. This is a no-bake dessert. I was trying to come up with some search-worthy title for it but No-Bake Gluten Free Refined Sugar Free Tropical Cheesecake-like Dessert is just way too long. This dessert takes a little bit of time to prepare, but nothing is difficult and you can make it way ahead of time and just keep it in the freezer. Take it out of the freezer about 15 minutes before you want to serve it for the best flavor. Recipe note: Macadamia nuts can be pricey, so cashews are a great substitution for the filling but, in that case, I would use almonds for the crust.

Gluten-Free Vegan Tropical “Cheesecake” Serves 6-8 Ingredients ¾ c macadamia nuts 1 c medjool dates, pitted ½ c unsweetened coconut flakes ½ tsp kosher or fine sea salt Filling 1 c unsweetened coconut flakes 1½ c macadamia nuts ¾ c full-fat coconut milk – shake can well before measuring ¼ c coconut oil Zest of 1 lime, finely grated Juice of 2 limes, use divided ½ cup coconut palm syrup 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 2 c frozen mango chunks, no need to thaw Crust Cover the macadamia nuts with boiling water and let soak for one hour (or you can cover with cold water and let soak in the refrigerator overnight). Cover the dates with hot water and let soak for 10 minutes. Combine the soaked macadamia nuts, dates, coconut and salt in a food processor and process until the mixture forms a dough. Press firmly

SIMPLY GLUTEN FREE Carol Kicinski This “cheesecake” contains no cheese! It’s a vegan alternative that is so delicious, you won’t miss the cheese at all. into the bottom of a greased 9-inch spring-form pan. Put in freezer while preparing the filling. Filling Toast the coconut flakes in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently, until golden brown and fragrant, about four minutes. Let cool and set aside. Cover the macadamia nuts with

boiling water and let soak for one hour (or you can cover with cold water and let soak in the refrigerator overnight). Combine the soaked nuts with the coconut milk, coconut oil, lime zest, juice of one lime, coconut palm syrup and vanilla. Process until very smooth. Pour the mixture on top of the crust. Clean out the processor and combine the mango and juice of one

lime. Process until smooth—it will take longer if the mango is still frozen. Dollop the mango on top of the nut filling and, using a spoon or knife, swirl it into the nut filling. Sprinkle the cooled toasted coconut over the top of the cake and freeze until firm, at least four hours. Remove the cake from the freezer about 15 minutes before serving.

Nautical Mile Surges On BY STEVE MOSCO

sMOSCO@ANTONMEDIAGROUp.COM

Nearly five years after Superstorm Sandy changed the fortune of every seaside community on the island, the Nautical Mile in Freeport has enjoyed waves of new success stories with revitalized restaurants and an ever-popular social scene to go with its laid-back daytime setting. Besides old favorites like Otto’s Sea Grill, Bracco’s and Woodcleft Crabshack, more recent additions include Rachel’s Waterside Grill and Nawlins Seafood company, which both bring an updated flair to the mile. Rachel’s serves Nautical eaters a taste of sea-worthy new American food, with dockside seating and the best brunch on the mile. Nawlins goes for a more Cajun approach, with New Orleans’ style flair and fare. The Woodcleft Crabshack is a long-time favorite for eaters near and far. The steamers are always outstanding, as is the zupa di mare, with shrimp, scallops, calamari, clams and mussels over linguine—ask for a lobster tail on top and the Crabshack

will gladly oblige. As for snacks on the mile, Pip’s Ice Cream Parlour and the new Taco Tuesdays beam with treats great for day or night. Taco Tuesdays is a walk-up window that was once Ralph’s Italian Ices (which has moved down the road), serving an array of tacos, platters and empanadas perfect for a daytime snack or the late-night munchies. Meanwhile, Pip’s serves Hershey’s ice cream—the right way to end a hot day or night on the mile. The Nautical Mile still exists as two distinct worlds, with an older crowd biking and walking the mile during the day and a younger crowd bar-hopping and dancing through the night. The restaurants on the mile, specifically on Woodcleft Avenue, follow this duality, with some of the seaside-view eateries transforming into thumping dance parties when the sun goes down. This bestof-both worlds atmosphere is what keeps the Nautical Mile Bracco’s alive throughout changing 319 Woodcleft Ave. trends and anything else 516-378-6575 Mother Nature throws at it.

A Few Long Island Brews For You BY NICOLE LOCKWOOD nlockwood@antonmediagroup.com

Garvies Point Craft Bewery

For many, summers on Long Island are synonymous with beaches, but for others, another “b” word comes to mind—beer. From pale ales to pilsners to porters, there’s nothing quite like putting down a cold one on a hot summer night, or afternoon for that matter. Luckily, Long Island is home to some of the most wellregarded brewing companies, with their products sold locally, statewide and even nationally. Plan a trip to any of these nearby spots to get a taste of the island’s best brews.

from nearby farms, aiding the local economy and agriculture. The relatively new establishment is owned and operated by couple Bryan and Kristine Murphy, who were able to launch the business

with a little help from the online crowdsourcing site Kickstarter. Craft beers of all types are always available, with new beers featured frequently on tap. Popular brews currently available include Rocking the Oats, a wheat ale with oatmeal and cascade hops, and Propaganda Porter, with hints of vanilla bean and bourbon.

Barrier Brewing Co.

While it may be small, this brewery certainly makes up for its spatial limitations with big flavors. Craft beer is produced three barrels at a time, which makes for an ever-changing lineup of brews in rotation. Lithology, a term literally meaning the study of rocks and sediment, was chosen for the name of the establishment as a tribute to Earth’s most efficient water filtration system: its rocks. Since water is the basis of life, and of beer, the name seemed a logical fit. Beers on tap range from ales to stouts to Belgians, all available to customers in the tasting room.

The business aims to serve the highest quality of beer while staying true to its nautical North Shore roots. Ingredients are sourced locally and from around the world to produce fan favorites like the Honey Ale (made with real honey from Bee Haven in Locust Valley), Denali Day Dream, Summer White House Saison and Mithrim Double IPA. Besides the brewery itself, several supermarkets, beverage distributors and local businesses sell Oyster Bay Brewing Company products.

June Is National Fresh Fruit And V BY JESSICA DIMEO specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

June is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, when farm markets are open and filling up with fresh produce. The American Heart Association (AHA) is encouraging Americans to add color to their meals throughout the month as part of their Healthy For Good movement. The movement is designed to inspire lasting change through small, simple steps in four key areas: Eat smart. Add color. Move more. Be well. The American Heart Association recommends four servings of fruit and five servings of vegetables each day. The AHA’s goal is to inspire and teach Americans how to add color to every meal and snack, because adding even one serving of color in the form of fruits and vegetables each day can help to build a healthier lifestyle. Fruits and vegetables in all colors and forms-fresh, frozen, canned and dried—count toward the daily servings. Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables is directly linked to longer, healthier life, according to the AHA. It

can reduce the risk of premature death, heart disease, stroke, multiple forms of cancer and conditions like diabetes and hypertension which are linked to lower quality of life. This June, and all year long, the AHA encourages healthier eating and adding color to daily meals and snacks. The American Heart Association recommends four servings of fruit and five servings of vegetables each day—about 4½ cups total. The average American adult eats about 1 to 1½ cups of each daily. Increasing fruit and vegetable consumption alone can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by 20 percent. Just 2½ cups of fruits and vegetables daily could reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke. If Americans ate just one more serving of fruits or vegetables per day, this would save more than 30,000 lives and $5 billion in medical costs each year, according to the AHA.

iving on Long Island, one of the favorite pastimes for families is fishing. Surrounded by water on all sides, Long Island is a prime fishing area. Fishing has many health benefits. Being outside and active makes you feel better and encourages a healthier way of life. It allows you to de-stress. The thrill of pursuing and catching fish is an age-old need and even if you have a bad day of fishing, it still beats a day in the office. Fishing offers you the chance to improve your self-esteem through respect for the environment, mastering a skill and achieving personal goals. Obviously, the thrill is in catching a fish, but you need to practice patience, a talent that needs to be developed. It is a lifetime skill and an activity that can be enjoyed at any age. It is best when shared throughout the generations. It is something you can do alone or with friends. Quite a bit of social development occurs. There are many ways to enjoy this sport, but if you don’t know how or don’t have the right equipment, the place to start is at Atlantic Outfitters in Port Washington. The store, located at 405 Main St., has everything you need to gear up for the sport including bait,

Richard Schiff had a 10-minute battle with this beauty. He landed this 40-pound Striped Bass off Barkers Point on a bunker tail chunk. The fish was revived and released. It was caught with a G. Loomis Pro Blue rod, Avet reel.

fishing rods and boat rentals. There is a bait machine outside so you can get going on those late night and early morning excursions, which is usually when the fish are biting, without missing a beat. When fishing, fisherman should always consider sun protection and wear a hat and long sleeve shirt— and don’t forget to bring plenty of sunscreen. Don’t be fooled when it is overcast—clouds don’t guarantee that you won’t get any sun, the sun’s rays are the most potent. It is a good idea to wear clothing that incorporates SPF in the weave of the fabric. Once you are set with clothing and equipment, you are ready to catch some fish. When casting a line, fishermen typically use a technique called angling. That is why you hear the term angler in fishing. An angler is a person who fishes with a hook and a line. If you are into more ambitious fishing, you can book a charter. The Angler Fleet, located at Inspiration Wharf, 405 Main St. in Port Washington, has open boat fishing. Trips are available daily to fish for striped bass, bluefish and fluke. For more information, visit their website at www.theangler.com. So go outdoors and explore the beauty and majesty of fishing. It can lower your blood pressure and give you the thrill of the hunt.

Here are some other locations to enjoy fishing: Captree State Park 3500 Ocean Parkway, Babylon Municipal Fishing Pier 700 Magnolia Blvd., Long Beach Port Washington Town Dock & Walkway Main Street, Port Washington Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium 1660 Route 25, Cold Spring Harbor Harborfrot Park East Broadway, Port Jefferson Montauk Point State Park 2000 Montauk Highway, Montauk Lake Ronkonkoma Ronkonkoma Laurel Lake Laurel

Michael LaSalle caught this big fish out on Manhasset Bay aboard The Angler 3, a fishing boat manned by Captain Pete. The Angler Fleet is located in Port Washington. The fish weighed 6 pounds and measured 24.5 inches long. Dr. Marlene Levy, PhD, DAIPM, is a NY State Licensed professional with 25+ years experience in

Backyard Must-Haves BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jfAUCI@ANTONMEDIAGROUp.COM

You only get to utilize your backyard for a few months out of the year, so why not make it a retreat you want to spend time in? Patio sets and lawn games only go so far when furnishing your backyard. Fire pits, a backyard projection screen, unique coolers and hammocks and so many other elements are affordable purchases to help turn your yard into an outdoor oasis. Check out our list for backyard must-haves. Hammock swing bed It used to be all you needed was a sheet and two trees to sway back and forth in the summer breeze. Now, hammocks are anything but simple, like this patio swing bed with a canopy. Protected by the sun and big enough to share with a buddy, the swing bed is a twist on the traditional hammock, and is comfortable and durable to suit your summer needs. Available for $619 at Home Depot.

Cooler table Don’t let bulky coolers and large patio furniture cramp your style. Summer is all about easy living and an all-in-one cooler table checks off most boxes when it comes to outdoor entertaining. Perfect for cocktail parties by the pool or backyard gatherings, this pedestal cooler table won’t take up space and eliminates high traffic areas so guests don’t have to make trips back and forth for drinks. Simply fill the bottom with ice and enjoy your beverage and snack on the table top, which can be collapsed as well. The Keter 7.5-Gal. Cool Bar Rattan Style Outdoor Patio Pool Cooler Table is available on Amazon for $693. Fire pit Gather round the campfire. Fire pits are not only the solution to chilly summer nights, they are the perfect entertainment for a social circle. Roasting marshmallows and storytelling are great for the kids, but a cold beer or glass of wine and some music is even better for adults. Fire pits range in all different sizes and styles from a simple, small model (around $200) to intense architectural creations clocking in at around $3,000 or more. Of course, if you choose to customize your backyard patio area with an in-ground or raised fire pit, there are plenty of design options as well.

Outdoor lighting A little light can go a long way when creating your slice of paradise. String lights (even Christmas lights) add an elegant ambiance and glow to your backyard. Hang strands around the perimeter of your deck, fence, line the shed or even up the umbrella to take the elements of the outdoors to another level. You can even drape a few lights over your bushes to create an enchanted evening garden. Clear and warm white lights are classy and the least expensive way to go, but a pop of color is always fun for summer.

Backyard projection screen Creating your own drive-in movies has become quite popular lately. What better way to enjoy beautiful summer nights than in your own backyard with some popcorn and a movie? You can choose any movie you want and create a truly one-of-a kind experience for your friends and family. Depending on how big of a projector screen you want (this Camp Chef O.E.G. Indoor/ Outdoor Movie Screen is available in 92” and 115” and is suitable for small groups), it is perfect for rainy nights in and cool nights out. Made of nylon reflection material for high resolution pictures, the screens are easy to assemble and easy to store. The 92” screen is available at Target for $128.99.

Wrapped around the still standing Castle Gould and Hempstead House—along with two other remaining mansions (Falaise and Mille Fleur) are six hiking trails that weave through countless natural and landscaped areas. Upon entering the estate, its immediate beauty solidifies the Sands Point Preserve as

50 Barry Dr., Glen Cove www.garviespointmuseum.com 516-571-8010 A center for Long Island geology research as well as a valued resource for Long Island’s study on Native American archeology, visitors are in for quite an experience when hiking the grounds of the Garvies Point Preserve. Consisting of 62 acres of forests, meadows and waterways, this preserve is home to more than 60 different species of trees as well as a variety of wildflowers and animals. As you navigate your way through the forest trails you’ll be greeted by high cliffs overlooking the Long Island Sound. Summer’s here and it’s time for families to turn off the television set, the computers, the iPods and any and all electronic devices and enjoy the campgrounds of Long Island. Camping is a great way for families to bond. It’s also a great way to get down to the basics: No frozen food, but dinner being cooked on an outdoor campfire, with plenty of time for hiking and swimming in between.

Campgrounds Offer Tons of Outdoor Fun

Must-Have Bug Gadgets BY JENNIFER FAUCI

jfauci@antonmediagroup.com

They’re back. While newly freed rambunctious children are the cause of annoying turmoil for many people this summer, there is one pest that takes the cake: insects. While many insects are good for the garden and keep other bugs at bay, some people, like this author, just can’t stand them. Try to release bugs back into nature, but if you can’t, these gadgets will send them packing. Cricket traps An unwanted visitor, these oversized spider crickets or Camel Crickets, came over from Asia and have been inundating the south shore of Long Island for years. Cricket season is at an

Bug zapper racket The best way to kill a bug is to fry it. Yes, fry it. Since bug zappers are kept outside, this nifty tennis rackets has an electrical force field that zaps and kills anything that comes into contact with it. It can zing you with a bit of a shock as well, so keep out of reach of children. This

all-time high and spells disaster for those living near the water or with damp, moist basements. However, these nasty buggers can’t resist the scent of bananas. Insect glue traps are best for catching and killing these beasts that are attracted to a distinct scent. Available at ACE Hardware or your local Home Depot or Lowes, simply place them around the edges of a room (basements, garages and dens are popular spots) and toss out when the trap gets full. There’s no killing them so traps are your best bet, although a visit from the exterminator can’t hurt.
