It’s All About The Music A retrospective look at The Grammys

or decades, music aficionados have looked forward to the one night that celebrates all different types of artists and genres in the cutthroat music industry.

The Grammys is the award show that brings together artists from all over the world on one stage to honor their accomplishments. It’s an award show where really anything can happen.

Does anyone remember the time in 2017 when Adele stopped her performance not even halfway through her George Michael tribute to start over after she messed up?

So how did The Grammys come into existence? Well, it all started during the Hollywood Walk of Fame project in the 1950s. As various recording executives were chosen to create a list of prominent recording industry people who would qualify for those coveted Walk of Fame stars on Hollywood Boulevard, they soon came to the revelation that many people who were revolutionary leaders in their business would never earn a star. So those recording executives decided to take action and do something about it. Soon, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) was created.

But what would an award of that caliber be called? A working title was the Eddie, which was to honor Thomas Edison, the inventor of the phonograph. But let’s face it, The Eddies just doesn’t sound right. After racking their brains on what to call this newfound award, the NARAS settled on using the name of the invention of Emile Berliner, the gramophone, for the awards.

The Grammys was now officially born.

The first annual Grammy Awards was held on May 4, 1959 in two different locations. One of them was at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA, while the second location was at the Park Sheraton Hotel in New York City. Twentyeight Grammys were awarded that night (there

are a lot more awards given out currently), which saw Ella Fitzgerald and Ross Bagdasarian winning the most awards, with three Grammys each. Count Basie, Domenico Modugno and Henry Mancini also won two awards each that night. The second annual Grammys, which was the first to actually be televised, was held in the same year on Nov. 29, 1959. Crooner Frank Sinatra and composer Duke Ellington each won three awards that night.

From Best Pop Solo Performance to Best Spoken Word Album to Best Americana Album and more, The Grammys is known for its overwhelming amount of genre categories in which artists can win. But like everything else, there are always exceptions to the rules.

Record of the Year, which is awarded to the performer and the production team of a single song; Album of the Year, which is awarded to the performer and the production team of a full album; Song of the Year, which is awarded to the writers/composers of a single song; and Best New Artist, which is awarded to a promising breakthrough performer who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording that establishes the public identity of that artist, are a part of the Grammys General Field, which aren’t restricted by genre. The only two artists to win all four of these awards were singer-songwriter Christopher Cross, who won all four awards in 1980, and Adele, who won the Best New Artist award in 2009 and the remaining awards in 2012 and in 2017.

Winning a Grammy has been described by many artists as life-changing and with the 62nd annual Grammys right around the corner, it’s anyone’s guess whose life will be changed next.

MOST GRAMMYS WON The record for the most Grammy awards won is held by Hungarian-British conductor Georg Solti, who was music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He won 31 competitive Grammy Awards out of 74 nominations and was also awarded the first Grammy Trustees Award in 1967 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996.

The Ever Talented Brandi Carlile

U

sing the term multi-talented to describe Brandi Carlile is a little like calling Dolly Parton a mere country singer. Carlile has garnered 11 Grammy nominations (four alone in 2020, as well as a trio of trophies already on her shelf), landed on then-President Barack Obama’s Spotify playlist and most recently joined forces with fellow Nashville superstars Maren Morris, Amanda Shire and Natalie Hemby to form the supergroup The Highwomen. And most of this happened in the past two years.

This latest project was helmed by Music Row superstar producer Dave Cobb, who had co-produced Carlile’s sixth effort, By the Way I Forgive You, with mutual friend Shooter Jennings.

For Carlile, who had worked with notable producers like Rick Rubin and T-Bone Burnett on some of her earlier efforts, getting in the studio with Cobb revealed him to be a next-level talent despite his not having the same kind of name recognition the older duo might have.

“Working with [Rick and T-Bone] is very, very different because the presence that they both have is not unlike what a big rock star would have.

Mind you, this is all observational.

It’s like if you were hanging around and Keith Richards walked into the room. You would know that a rock star is in the room. Working with T-Bone Burnett and Rick Rubin felt that way

because they’d been around a long time, they’re rock stars and they know they’re rock stars. A lot of it has to do with how old I was when we started working together, because I was super-young and they were like massive rock stars to me,” she said.

“Dave is actually slightly more dominant than either Rick Rubin or T-Bone Burnett. But he does it from within the artistry and on the level with the band. He’s got this way of infiltrating and with it, he grows the vision. Everyone will be throwing out ideas but it just so happens that Dave Cobb’s ideas are the best ones,” she said with a laugh.

As for working with Jennings, the Seattle native admits the duo struck up an instant connection with him when the two crossed paths nearly a decade ago.

“I met Shooter Jennings at Johnny Cash’s 80th birthday in Austin while recording Austin City Limits. He noticed my tattoos of The Neverending Story and we kind of started talking and shooting the [bull] about 1980s movies and 1980s kids. And how somehow the 1980s kids have grown

up to embrace this kind of throwback anti-generation of writing songs about things they never experienced, when we know we’re all 1980s kids and play the same video games,” she explained. “And meanwhile, some of us are talking about hopping trains and plowing the fields. We were joking about that and we made kind of a fast friendship.”

Jennings is equally effusive when talking about his admiration for Carlile as a friend and artist.

“I met her in 2011 I think. It was right by the Willie Nelson statue out in front of the W Hotel in Austin on this day. I was doing a Johnny Cash tribute show and I met her backstage in passing. I liked her music and we had an instant kinship,” he recalled. “Over the years, we just kind of fell in and out of each other’s lives. I was just a fan of her music and when I was doing my Countach (For Giorgio) record—it was a tribute to Giorgio Moroder and he did the music to The Neverending Story. Anyway, I decided that if she would sing it, I would put it on this record. She did it and that is kind of what started our working relationship.

Suffice it to say, Carlile has come quite a long way from being the Elton John-obsessed teen who actually met Reg Dwight’s late arranger Paul Buckmaster around the same time, only to work with him early in her career.

“I became obsessed with Elton John starting with a fifth-grade book report. It was the kind of obsession that you can only have when you’re in fifth grade and it never went away.

It sprung to life in me and lasted all through my elementary school years and high school even up to now,” she said. “I was 16 years old and a producer friend of mine that was working in Seattle was going to record a Paul Buckmaster-conducted string session in the city and he knew about my obsession. So he invited me and said that I couldn’t come into the control room, but I could sit in the office and look through the glass.

So I took down my Paul Buckmaster picture from Tumbleweed Connection from the wall and went to the session.

He came into the office and he was screaming, crying, yelling, having fits and throwing people out of the studio.

He was being just as dramatic as you hoped that a string arranger that eccentric would be. At one point he

came into the office in a rage and said, (in an exaggerated British accent), ‘Who are you then?’ I told him who I was, showed him my picture and played him a little bit of ’60 Years On’ and he cried—because that’s what Paul did, was cry like 15 times a day.

He signed my little picture and said he was going to make my records when I grew up. Over the years, I have 10 Paul Buckmaster arrangements and he was a real important influence on my life and a good friend. It was unbelievable when he died because it didn’t seem at all like he was running out of time when we were working on [By the Way, I Forgive You].”

Altruism is close to Carlile’s heart, dating back to the 2008 creation of the Looking Out Foundation, a nonprofit organization she co-founded with friends/creative partners Tim and Phil Hanseroth that gives financial support to causes in which they believe. Grants have been given to myriad organizations including Reverb, Honor the Earth, The Bridge School, UNICEF, The Women’s Funding Alliance, Doctors Without Borders and the Human Rights Campaign. It cleaves to one of the singer-songwriter’s most important beliefs.

Putting Pen To Paper

Songwriters and producers who have won Grammys

et’s face it. No matter who you are or what genre of music you like, you have a favorite song or album. But have you ever thought about the people who are behind it?

The producers, the musicians, the songwriters or the engineers? Many of those people’s names and job titles listed inside those folded and squished album booklets have gone on to win those shiny gold Grammys for their work and contributions.

Ryan Tedder The OneRepublic frontman, who has penned hit songs for, and with, The Jonas Brothers (“Sucker”), Leona Lewis (“Bleeding Love”), Beyoncé (“Halo” and “XO”), Ellie Goulding (“Burn”), Ed Sheeran (“Happier”) and more, has won three Grammys for his producing work. Tedder won Album of the Year due to his production credits on Adele’s albums 21 (2011) and 25 (2016), and Taylor Swift’s 1989

(2016). Tedder also has nine Grammy nominations under his belt, some of which include “Bleeding Love” in the Record of the Year category and OneRepublic’s “Apologize” in the Best Pop Performance By A Duo or Group With Vocals category in 2008.

Paul McCartney Famed Paul McCartney from the legendary band The Beatles is definitely no stranger to winning Grammy awards. He’s won 18 of them and has 78 nominations. In 1967, McCartney won a Grammy for The Beatles song

“Michelle” from their album Rubber Soul, which was composed mainly by McCartney. The song is a love ballad with part of its lyrics sung in French.

A Guide To Streaming Services

n 2020, it is almost surreal to think about Netflix’s humble origins. Launched in 1998, the world’s first online DVD rental store relied on snail mail to deliver movies to the masses. Today, the innovative entertainment company is known for putting subscription-based video streaming services on the map, changing the way society consumes media forever. In addition to Netflix and other established streaming services, such as Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, there is a whole new crop of options to consider.

Apple TV+, Disney+, Sling TV, HBO Max and YouTube TV are all vying for eyeballs.

Our editors cut through the noise to give you a no-nonsense guide to each.

Netflix

The OG remains a strong contender despite the new wave of streaming services. It offers a wide variety of award-winning TV shows, movies, anime, documentaries and more on thousands of Internet-connected devices. Plus, its commitment to producing original, award-winning content, such as Stranger Things, ensures you’ll always have access to the shows people are talking about.

It’s also starting to stream big box movies like The Irishman while it’s still in theaters. Plans start from $8.99 per month.

Hulu

Hulu offers live and on-demand TV and movies that gives viewers instant access to current shows from every major U.S. broadcast network in addition to the libraries of hit TV series and films and acclaimed Hulu Originals like Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning series The Handmaid’s Tale. The service also streams live news, entertainment and sports from 21st Century Fox, the Walt Disney Company, NBCUniversal, CBS Corporation, The CW, Turner Networks, A+E Networks and Discovery Networks.

Upcoming originals to keep an eye out for include Little Fires Everywhere from Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. The basic plan starts at $5.99 per month and includes commercials.

Amazon Prime Video Continuing to grow its scope, Amazon Prime Video, which

launched as a streaming platform to purchase and watch shows and movies, is now a powerhouse of original content. Subscribers can not only stream popular shows and movies for a flat monthly fee, they also have access to the service’s original shows, such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Patriot. It also lets you purchase or rent movies. The service comes with an Amazon Prime membership, or nonPrime members can subscribe for $8.99 per month.

Apple TV+

Not to be outdone, Apple made a splash with its new all-original streaming service Apple TV+ when it debuted in November.

Straight out the gate it offered heavy hitters, most notably the superstar-packed series The Morning Show, starring Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell.

Other originals include The Servant, produced by M. Night Shyamalan, and See, starring Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa. Plans are $4.99 per month.

Disney+

Less than two weeks after the public was introduced to Apple TV+, streaming service Disney+

debuted, breaking open the vault on all of Disney’s classics and more. The service primarily distributes films and television series produced by The Walt Disney Studios and Walt Disney Television, with content from Disney’s Marvel, National Geographic, Pixar and Star Wars.

Subscribers can also expect new original content. All of the films and series are described as “family-oriented entertainment.” There are no R-rated films or TV-MA-rated programming.

HBO Max

HBO already offers two different ways (HBO Go and HBO Now) to stream its original series (every season, every episode), plus hit movies, documentaries, sports and exclusive comedy specials. HBO NOW is an à la carte streaming option, and HBO GO is an on-the-go feature that comes with a cable subscription or Amazon Prime. But in May 2020, viewers will be introduced to HBO Max, a new streaming service that promises to “bring you closer to the entertainment you love.” Though it hasn’t debuted yet, there is good reason to

keep an eye out for the platform. It will not only offer HBO content, but other iconic TV shows from different networks, such as Fresh Prince as well as new titles premiering weekly throughout 2020. Rumor has it, that a Friends reunion is in the works at HBO Max, though it hasn’t been confirmed.

YouTube TV

Another cable-free TV alternative, YouTube TV lets viewers watch live TV from major broadcast and popular cable networks. The service provides access to live sports, breaking news and primetime shows as they air. It features 70-plus channels including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, HGTV and TNT, as well as movies and shows on-demand. It also comes with unlimited cloud DVR storage space, which allows subscribers to record and stream their favorite shows on the go. Ideal for large families (or multiple roommates), YouTube TV gives you six account per household. Plans start at $49 per month.

Sling TV

Sling TV bills itself as the ultimate, economical alternative to cable.

Viewers can watch live TV and sports, as well as a variety of on-demand movies and popular TV series. Sling TV comes with channels like CNN, TBS, Food Network and BBC America.

More channels, such as Disney and ESPN can be added, depending on the package you choose. Viewers will need a smart TV or devices, such as the Amazon Firestick, to use the service. Plans start at $25 per month.

Expanding Penn Station Requires More Than New Platforms And Tracks

overnor Andrew Cuomo’s proposal to increase Penn Station’s capacity by 40 percent with construction of the new Penn Station South Station, including four new platforms and eight new tracks requires far more to be successful.

There is no room to run additional trains into or out of Penn Station during rush hours via the East River tunnels. Three of four tunnels running inbound mornings and evening rush hours have tight spacing between trains. One tunnel is shared by the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), NJ Transit and Amtrak for reverse train movements with equally tight spacing.

There is no platform capacity at Penn Station to accommodate additional trains during rush hour. Penn Station is currently operating at 100 percent capacity. If one of the four tunnels is temporarily out of service, the result is numerous delays and cancellation of trains.

Metro North also has future plans ($400 million) to run additional service from Poughkeepsie and other stations via Amtrak Empire Corridor Hudson line using tracks on Manhattan’s West Side. The LIRR has invested $450 million to complete double tracking on the Ronkonkoma branch.

Once the main line third track is completed at a cost of $2.6 billion, the LIRR has plans to expand Ronkonkoma branch rush hour Penn Station service. This compliments an overall 45 percent promised increase in service that would include significant reverse commute options.

Cuomo wants to provide new frequent direct LIRR service on the Port Washington branch between Penn Station and Mets Willets Point station.

Additional service from Grand Central Terminal to Mets-Willets Point station may also begin once LIRR East Side Access to Grand Central Terminal is completed. $1 billion for new connections to the Eighth Avenue/34th Street, Seventh Avenue/34th Street and Seventh Avenue/28th Street stations.

Penn Station South could grow up to $18 billion when you include two new East River tunnels, mid-day storage capacity and other key project components not acknowledged by Cuomo.

Penn Station South is just another attempt by Cuomo to portray himself as the second coming of President Franklin Roosevelt and master builder Robert Moses. He is not an engineer, business person, transportation expert or daily commuter. He has never built a business from scratch or created a significant number of new good paying jobs on his own.

Cuomo continues to remind me of J. Wellington Wimpy, who famously said, “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.”

Tuesday may never come for taxpayers. We will have to pay for all the transportation goodies promised

by Cuomo within our lifetime.

Crime Takes A Dive In County

he dramatic decline in Nassau County’s crime rate was appropriately unveiled on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Both Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder credited the favorable crime statistics to law enforcement on a day meant to be thankful to those who keep their communities safe.

At a press conference on Jan. 9, at police headquarters, the two leaders were flanked by posters announcing some startling statistics.

“We are absolutely going in the right direction,” said Curran, standing with the police leadership team arrayed behind her. “Using the latest techniques and technology, data-driven problem-solving law enforcement is happening here, in all our communities, every single day.”

Adding, “this sort of thing does not happen by accident,” she went on to praise Ryder and his team and the men and women of the county’s police department.

Curran went on to note the “seamless” cooperation with federal, state and village law enforcement, the reopening of the Sixth and Eighth district headquarters, the erection of the new police academy adjacent to Nassau Community College and “the always improving relations between our communities and our police officers. It’s a big reason why we

continue to see these crime [drops].”

“Crime is down in Nassau County,” Ryder said simply. “We are the safest county for its size in the country.”

Anyone not interested in auto-tune-drenched pablum and chart-friendly fodder not much more substantial than the streaming technology that it’s being delivered on can be assured that there’s still plenty of solid music being recorded.

The following are some of the more next-level releases you may have missed in 2019.

Jesse Malin: Sunset Kids (Wicked Cool Records) Not unlike Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, the combination of former D Generation front man Jesse Malin and Americana goddess-turned-producer Lucinda Williams are two great tastes that go great together. Malin’s latest is a reflection of how his being in his early ‘50s has him at a crossroads in life where introspection and personal losses like the passing of his father impacts him heavily. There’s plenty to love about this outing, from the way “Promises” carries a “Wild Horses” vibe and how “Chemical Heart” is a pop earworm punctuated by perky Farfisa organ, to the nods

to Ike and Tina Turner, Bernie Taupin and Jake LaMotta that are liberally sprinkled throughout.

Allison Moorer: Blood (Autotelic Records) Sparse and rife with vulnerability, Moorer joined forces with Kenny Greenberg (who produced her first two records) for this collection of songs that is a companion piece to her equally moving memoir of the same name. Highlights include the slinky swamp rocker “The Rock and the Hill,” the powerful “All I Wanted (Thanks Anyway)” and “Heal,” a prayer of self-affirmation co-written with Mary Gauthier. Sister Shelby Lynne shows up to finish off “I’m the One to Blame,” an unfinished song by the duo’s late, abusive father.

The Highwomen: The Highwomen (Low Country Sound/Elektra) Spearheaded by founding member Amanda Shires, this supergroup, inspired by the Highwaymen of Cash, Nelson, Kristofferson and Jennings fame, was rounded out by Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris and Natalie Hemby. Teamed up with American

Homicides, the commissioner related, are “at record lows [compared to their peak]. In ’17, we had 15. In ’18, it went up to 17. This year [2019], we went down to 16.”

The only category that did not see a decline, according to Ryder, was grand larcenies.

He attributed this to the opioid crisis and the need for quick cash by users, who burgle unlocked cars.

Ryder pleaded with residents to lock up their vehicles at night and take their key fobs. The vast majority of stolen cars result from people leaving the fobs within them. And 90 percent of the cars that are broken into are unlocked.

County police use a technology called “shot spotter,” deployed in high-crime areas to detect and report gunfire.

“In 2010, we had 377 shot spotter detections,” Ryder said. “Last year [2018], we had 15. [In 2019], we had six.”

The commissioner outlined a series of new initiatives to combat crime, such as a gun suppression unit and a tactical vigilance team to patrol houses of worship, malls and other places that Ryder called “soft targets.”

Both Curran and Ryder emphasized that the criminal justice reforms enacted by the state last year, which removed cash bail for a long list of offenses, needed to be reformed. Ryder detailed cases of people going free after committing crimes and doing the same ones.

Of 2019 super-producer Dave Cobb, the quartet conjured up a delightful batch of songs that include the rollicking honky-tonky that is “My Name Can’t Be Mama,” the harmony-soaked anthem “Redesigning Women” and the soulful same-sex weeper “If She Ever Leaves Me.” The Specials: Encore (Island) While Jerry Dammers and Neville Staple remain in absentia from this reunion, the founding member triumvirate of Terry Hall, Lynval Golding and Horace Panter hasn’t lost its knack for composing catchy social commentary. Longtime fans will tuck into the infectious groove of “B.L.M.” that follows Golding’s familial trip through Jamaica to England and then the United States framed by a steady diet of racist experiences.

Other highlights include a nod to gun-crazy culture via a cover of the rock-steady 1960s Valentines earworm “Blam Blam Fever,” the snappy indictment of conservative politics that is the “Ghost Town”-flavored “Vote For Me” and the infectious reggae “Embarrassed By You,” which

takes to task younger thugs and xenophobes.

Yola: Walk Through Fire (Easy Eye Sound) Credit Dan Auerbach for spotting the talent of this former Massive Attack/ Chemical Brothers back-up singer.

And while he produced and co-wrote a number of songs on her full-length debut that Auerbach released on his own label, Yola’s singular voice and approach lies at the crossroads of soul and country. From the epic baroque pop trappings framing the sweeping opener “Faraway Look,” the UK native makes it clear that this project is driven by her substantial talents. She more than holds her own in a duet with Vince Gill on the ballad “Keep Me Here,” exudes subtle mastery of the rich country-pop on“It Ain’t Easier” and lives within the heartfelt gospel-flavored grooves of “Love All Night (Work All Day).” If there’s any kind of musical justice, Yola should be the one walking away with the Best New Artist award at this year’s Grammys.

Electric car manufacturers seek expansion in the new decade

Get ready to cruise in the HOV lane. Believe it or not, you don’t even need to have passengers during rush hour to pass the insane traffic that everyday New Yorkers are accustomed to.

Meet the electric car, which is seeking a major expansion as the new decade just kicked off.

The electric cars, comprised of revolutionary technology, can last anywhere from 100 to almost 400 miles on the road.

While the electric car is nowhere close to overtaking the traditional gas-powered machines, there are plenty of benefits for those who want to feel environmentally-friendly. But at

the same time, consumers need to understand that these vehicles are far from perfect.

“The market share of electric vehicles on Long Island is .068 is the latest number I looked at in the beginning of December,” Rosemary Mascali, chair of Drive Electric Long Island’s education and outreach subcommittee, told Anton Media Group. “It’s still not a large adoption, but there’s reasons for it. For years, there weren’t a lot of models, there was a big price differential and there weren’t a lot of incentives.”

Electric cars are complex, and organizations like Drive Electric Long Island, which is run by the

United States Green Building Council, aim to have consumers understand how they work.

Unlike plug-in hybrids, which have a split electric motor and a regular gasoline-based one, electric cars run solely on a battery. The lithium-ion batteries are expensive, which drives the overall cost up.

The cars, though, can now be charged at home. It will take several hours, preferably overnight, to fully charge and it add to your electric bill. There is no need to purchase a high-voltage charger.

“Owners can use a standard outlet, which takes a

“All electric vehicles come with a 110-volt-compatible, or Level 1, home connector kit. It’s essentially a fancy extension cord that allows your car to be plugged into a standard outlet on one end and into the car on the other end.”

But these cars are not meant for long trips. This is for the daily commuter, going to and from work, plus maybe a little extra driving.

The battery life of these cars means that they’re perfect for those who drive about 100 miles per day, with some leeway depending on the car’s capability. A Tesla Model S can last for 373 miles without having to be recharged, while the Ford Focus Electric will need some extra juice after 115 miles. Audi’s first electric SUV, called the e-tron, lasts about 250 miles and can be recharged in an astonishing time of just a half-hour.

“Every electric car that goes on the road today is going to get greener over time,” Mascali said. “Ford seems to be picking up the pace.”

Within the next decade, manufacturers, led by Tesla’s innovation, will not only last longer, but they’ll be the optimal choice for consumers.

“If you’re one that drives 20 to 30 miles a day, the plug-in cars are pretty attractive,” she explained.

“The hybrids can kick into gas if you need it.”

A study conducted by Bloomberg New Energy Finance states that by 2040, electric cars might be out-selling the traditional internal combustion vehicles, with sales nearing 50 million cars. However, this is a major challenge that is befalling this industry.

“There are already 630,000 public charging points installed globally, and utilities, oil and gas companies, automakers and pure-play operators are currently all active in this area,” the Bloomberg New Energy Finance report states. “But much more will be needed to serve the growing EV fleet.”

Some companies, as Mascali pointed out, are even adding electric vehicle charging stations for their employees. Among them are local companies on Long Island, as well as universities in the area, making it easier and cheaper for people to charge their cars.

That’s not all, either. New York’s Clean Pass program actually enables drivers of electric vehicles to hop onto the HOV lane and avoid traffic.

The inconvenience of charging your car each night might be bothersome at first, too.

However, you will save a significant amount of money by using electricity in your home, rather than frequenting a gas station each week to fill up your tank.

“The government policy will make a difference,” Mascali said.

The benefits are certainly visible for the electric cars, but it costs a lofty price. In the future, the price will likely decrease significantly, a great sign for the industry and one step closer to making the world we live on a safer and healthier place to life.

Mineola Supe Nominated For Superintendent Of The Year M ichael P. Nagler, who is the superintendent of the Mineola Union Free School District, has been named as a finalist

by The School Superintendents Association for the 2020 National Superintendent of the Year. The profound distinction honors school system leaders throughout the United States, who are making a positive difference in the lives of the students they serve. Nagler was in the running for this honor after being named New York State Superintendent of the Year in October.

In its 33rd year, the National Superintendent of the Year program is open to all U.S. superintendents who plan to continue in the profession. In order to be nominated, each candidate must meet the following criteria: leadership for learning—creativity in successfully meeting the needs of students in the school system, communication—strength in both personal and organizational communication, professionalism—constant improvement of administrative knowledge and skills, while providing professional development opportunities and motivation to others on the education team and community involvement—active participation in local community activities and an understanding of regional, national and international issues.

Nagler, who earned his doctorate in education from Columbia University, has been in education for 33 years. He began his career in the New York City school system and advanced to an assistant principal position. In 1999, he joined Mineola as assistant principal of its middle school and later served as its high school principal and deputy superintendent before becoming superintendent in 2009.

In his first years, Nagler was responsible for convincing the community of the need to consolidate and reorganize its school structure to remain fiscally responsible. With that change and savings, the district was able to begin funding transformational technology advancements for all of its students, including being among the first to adopt a one:one, take-home, iPad initiative that eventually rolled out to all students in grades K-12. Since then, the district has continued to thrive and advance, not just with technology, but with its curriculum offerings, initiatives, professional development and facilities, all while remaining at or below the tax cap for its residents.

Under Nagler’s leadership, the Mineola School District has continued to soar: • Mineola is one of the only districts to have all five of its schools earn the distinction of an Apple Distinguished School.

• All five schools have been recognized

its division at the New York State Field Band Conference competition.

• Mineola is the first and only district on Long Island to offer full-day pre-K to all of its residents.

• All curriculum has been rewritten for K-7 in the last few years to take a more integrative approach.

• Integration of Application of Knowledge Assessments that require students to illustrate their understanding of a concept in different ways.

• Established a culture of growth mindset districtwide, and of cultivating the 4Cs of creativity, communication, critical thinking and collaboration into all of its innovative learning environments.

• Capital work continues each year to advance the schools for its students and protect taxpayers’ investment in buildings, all without the need to bond any work. To date, more than $45 million in capital improvement work has been done at no additional expense to the taxpayers.

Dr. Michael P. Get With The Program A guide to adjusting to life in college

ongratulations. You’ve made it into the college of your choice, and hopefully it won’t merely be an extension of your high school experience (hence the 13th grade). Challenge yourself, for this is an opportunity for personal growth and enrichment.

I “walked in your shoes” many years ago when I graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn and was accepted to the Bernard M. Baruch College of the City University of New York. I remember only a handful of professors who had their “game-on.” Even today, many professors seem clueless about their students other than what goes on in their classroom. If you do have an opportunity to meet a passionate, motivational educator, cherish the learning opportunity.

A lot can be learned from reading student comments on “Rate My Professor.”

In many colleges, large lecture halls are taught by technical assistants and not the professor. It seems the focus is minimal interaction between teacher and student, not exactly like how I envision the higher education process. Wouldn’t you agree?

That’s why I will use this forum to address several important concepts for your consideration:

Stop whining about how tough college is

So what if gas is approaching $4 a gallon and textbooks cost more than $100 each? Some of you spend quite a bit of money at concerts, restaurants and bars. And when I see students in my classes with an iPad, I know they are fortunate. Many of you have your own car too. Think about your peers who don’t. Heck when I was your age, I couldn’t afford a car and had to rely on public transportation or date a girl who had her own set of wheels.

Don’t bring your “helicopter” parents along for the ride

Recognize that expression? If not, let me explain. It refers to a parent who “hovers” around your every move; a parent who makes it difficult for

you to mature and make your own decisions. Of course, parental input is important but you are at an age to take responsibility for your actions (or inactions).

Begin to think about your major

At age 18 or 19, you should have some idea of your future goals, but declaring a major can be a difficult decision.

Many of you cannot determine what your plans are for a Friday or Saturday night date. Therefore, take classes that you find interesting. Think of this as a different type of dating—an intellectual one. Focus on those classes each semester. Your picture will become clearer as you progress.

Never fall asleep in class

I know many of you have evening jobs, others like to party with friends and some even study. But if you stay up until 3 or 4 in the morning, how can you expect to be attentive for an 8 a.m. class? Some professors may ignore a

student who quietly dozes off—but I won’t. It’s embarrassing for you, the professor and your fellow classmates.

Scout’s honor: Professors are not out to fail anyone

You have a simple job to do: study, come to class on time with your required assignments and complete your projects and/or exams with a serious effort. There’s no “magic” to grading. Most professors have a grading criteria to follow so let’s KISS (Keep it simple, student).

Cut your professors some slack

Believe it or not, we do have lives outside of the classroom. Some of

us are married, others are divorced, some have children and others do not, just like in “real life.” I always try to bring a smile to class and personalize the setting; perhaps share a story or two with students.

Some enjoy listening and some do not. I have learned that patience and tolerance is a virtue for both student and teacher.

olloy College is welcoming a new president this year who is hitting all the right notes in his commitment to furthering higher education at the independent Catholic college based in Rockville Centre.

In December, John P. McEntee, chair of the Molloy College Board of Trustees, announced that Dr. James Lentini will become the seventh president of the college on July 1. Dr. Lentini was unanimously approved by the board.

Dr. Lentini, who is currently serving as senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, brings more than 30 years of higher education experience to the college. Prior to his being named, Molloy’s 13-member search committee—comprised trustees, faculty members, administrators and a student representative—reviewed the profiles of more than 80 potential candidates during an eight-month search process.

“Dr. Lentini is a passionate and thoughtful leader with a proven track record of success in academic program development,” McEntee said of the college’s incoming president. “His experience in inspiring, leading and sustaining transformational change will allow Molloy to build on the distinguished service and visionary leadership of Dr. Drew Bogner, Molloy’s current president.”

Dr. Lentini came to Oakland University in 2013. Prior to his appointment at Oakland, he served as dean of the College of Creative Arts at Miami University (Ohio) from 2007-13. He was the founding dean of the School of Art, Media and Music at The College of New Jersey from 2003-07 and served on the faculty and administration in the Department of Music at Wayne State University (WSU) from 1988 to 2003.

A Detroit native, Dr. Lentini

received a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from the University of Southern California, a Master of Music degree from Michigan State University and a Bachelor of Music degree from Wayne State University.

He also successfully completed the Management in Leadership in Education program at Harvard University.

As senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at Oakland University, he worked closely with deans and faculty in overseeing the development of new and innovative academic programs, including a newly-formed School of Music, Theatre and Dance and the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, which graduated its charter class in 2015. He led the reorganization of the Office of Research, overseeing academic and research developments that led to the elevation of the university’s Carnegie Classification from R3 to R2 category (Doctoral University – High Research Activity).

An internationally recognized composer and classical guitarist, Dr. Lentini is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Grammy awards and is a recipient of, among other musical honors, the Andres Segovia International Composition Prize.

His compositions have been performed and recorded by national and international ensembles and Gramophone magazine called him “an American classical music success story.”

Dr. Lentin, who has two sons, Luke and Noah, and a daughter, Evalina, with his wife, Dana, said he is looking forward to joining the campus community this summer.

We spoke to him about his vision for the school and how he’s preparing for his new role as president.

provides. Catholic education also resonates strongly with me and my family. I loved higher education as I was experiencing it myself as a student, all throughout the ranks of earning a bachelor’s degree, a master’s and a doctorate. Teaching has always been something that came naturally to me so in addition to my professional work as a musician,

composing pieces and playing classical guitar, being in higher education meant something to me.

It is a continuation of something I always loved as a student.

Molloy currently serves a population of approximately 5,000 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students. These students can earn degrees in a variety of

keeping the strength of the nursing school enrollment. Other things include, programs for adult learners, perhaps more online programs, in addition to our face-to-face undergraduate programs. There are always challenges.

The challenge will be to get everyone excited about the same initiatives so we can work together. It attracted me because of its programs and Catholic education. It was a natural connection. Nursing is really big at Molloy. Rockville Centre School District Superintendent reflects on 34 years on the job

We opted for the IB because it had all of the elements that the colleges and universities were telling us that kids needed to have at their fingertips when they went off, when they left high school and went to college.”

A program once meant for international businessmen and diplomats’ children living abroad has now become the school district crown jewel, leading many other districts to adopt the program. It’s all part of Johnson’s mantra, “all means all,” something he has told to his faculty every year at the opening of school.

“Simply by doing a great job here, this becomes a lighthouse school district,” Johnson said. “This school district has developed an incredible reputation statewide. And consequently, I have been able to use that platform to help change the minds of the people at the state level.”

The school district’s reputation has also led to Johnson needing a bigger wallet, as he is the third highest paid superintendent in the state and first on Long Island, making $458,386 annually. Part of that is because Johnson has influence on the state’s educational direction and was a critical voice against the common core curriculum when it was first introduced.

“The common core really is a set of standards and that set of standards I have no problem with,” Johnson said. “It is connected to preparation for college work and it was supposed to be universally applied to everybody. What New York State did in

the beginning was to put together these things they call modules. And these modules essentially became curriculum and that you had to kind of work through these prescribed set of lessons. Standards were never designed to be that way. They walked into a world that they don’t belong and they went further than they should have.”

While New York State did make changes to the curriculum after its initial launch after starch criticisms from educational leaders like Johnson, there always ways to improve in his eyes.

“I really want to see the state move in a whole different direction and I believe they’re going to get there,” Johnson said.

For all the success Johnson has had over his 34 years in reign, the last 12 months the school district has faced many challenges outside of the classroom. In September, Joan F.

Waldman, principal of Floyd B. Watson Elementary School, was relieved of her duties. No reason was given as to why she was removed, but there has been speculation that she allegedly embezzled money that was supposed to go to needy kids.

Johnson stated that the district was currently in litigation and chose not to comment on the matter.

This past summer, the school district was under siege after a virus, known as Ruyk, encrypted files on the district’s servers. The ransomware attack led to the district paying out $88,000 to get the data back.

Insurance covered most of the cost, leading the district to only payout $10,000.

Johnson did not leave the district for 18 straight days after the

virus was found.

“This happened on a Friday,” Johnson said. “Sunday night I was sitting over eating pizza with 12 to 15 people who are helping us then recover. We had to go to every single computer and had to completely clean it out and then re-image it.”

This past fall, the school district suspended South Side varsity girls soccer Assistant Coach Chris Aloisi for four games. Aloisi, who recused himself from tryouts, allegedly used his position at East Meadow Soccer Club and as a private trainer to guarantee spots on the varsity team.

The varsity team ended up with only 20 girls on the roster, a far cry from past year, and a junior varsity team that struggled to fill its roster.

“We can’t go back and fix what happened,” Johnson said. “What I can do is to make sure that it doesn’t happen again and that what we can do is to write a policy which is clearer in the delineation of our expectations of what staff should or should not be doing.”

Above all else, Johnson wants equity to be prevalent within the school district and that started from childhood, to his time as a researcher and now as superintendent. In that equity fight, he sees his two

brothers that are disabled, one did not make it past his early 20s, but the other is still alive today.

“I’d love to be able to rewrite the history of their lives so that it would be different for them when I grew up,” Johnson said. “I can’t rewrite it for them, but I can rewrite it for the population of kids that we have in this school district..”

Johnson’s legacy as superintendent is yet to be put in stone, but he has clearly made it a lighthouse for everyone to see and follow.

“I just want it to be a meaningful place for every single kid who shows up at our front door and that whatever their color, whatever the languages that they speak, whatever their income is, they find a home in a place in Rockville Centre,” Johnson said with an Apple AirPod in his right ear.

“It’s up to me to create an institution that makes this a welcome place for everyone of those kids.”

by NATTS. In February 1997, the school was authorized by the New York State Board of Regents to confer the Associate in Occupational Studies degree. Under this authorization, the Institute is approved to offer degree programs in computer aided drafting and design/mechanical and computer aided drafting and design/ architectural. In December 1997, the Institute was approved to offer degree programs in electronic and computer service technology.

How To Get An Internship In NYC Right After Finishing College

s any college graduate knows, finding work after college is not easy. Not only are entry-level jobs hard to come by,depending on the profession, naturally, but even simple internships require a thorough and tough search. For people with no work experience in their fields, the quest to get an internship in New York City can seem quite arduous after college. But if you approach this task properly right after graduation, you’ll have less of a difficulty. Which is precisely what we’ll discuss here.

Look For Graduate Internships

There are many organizations and companies that come up with their own internship programs, including those whose specific aim are college graduates. For example, many professionals will tell you that certain job positions in the medical care field are woefully understaffed, which is why a lot of hospitals make their own internship programs precisely aimed at recent grads. And this market aside, there are plenty of others where job opportunities are available, if you find the right program.

Also, there are numerous nonprofit organizations that serve to bring recent graduates and different employers across the U.S. closer together, enabling both sides to make valuable contacts to mutual benefit.

Networking is Important

Speaking of contacts, one of the first things you’ll hear when you ask someone about what you need to do in order to get an internship in NYC after college is the fact that networking is absolutely crucial. And that’s something many young people do not understand, instead believing that their knowledge and education is enough to land them at least an internship.

However, keeping in touch with all sorts of people related to your profession is quite important. If you don’t know where to start, make sure you don’t become out of sync with school alumni; people from the same educational background tend to stick together, and help each other out.

Many colleges and universities even have official career network organizations for this very purpose.

Come Up With Your Own Internship

Regardless of your chosen profession, in the 21st century capitalism landscape, you need to realize one simple fact—there will be competition in the job market. Scratch that—there will be a lot of competition. And this isn’t something to shy away from, but instead something to embrace. At the end of the day, it’s important to think outside the box, and be prepared to go lengths that others aren’t willing to go.

While the example we’ll give here isn’t applicable to every kind of profession out there, it’s still a way to get an internship in NYC and elsewhere, after college. There are college grads who want to pursue a career in government, but don’t know where to start. And some of them actually wrote to Congress members that campaigned on issues they were passionate about, asking them for a position on their staff, in relation to those specific issues.

In other words, if you can’t find an internship opportunity, you may need to make one yourself. Contact high-profile professionals in your field, and see if they’d be willing to find funding for an additional position for you. If you’ve got the right communication and persuasion skills, this may very well work, though, naturally, you’ll also need the academic credentials to back this up.

Volunteering

Once you finish college, unfortunately—in most cases, you shouldn’t expect to be a big earner right away.

While there are certain jobs where that’s possible, most professions will leave you longing for even a paid internship. But if you’ve got family money, or other means to sustain yourself for a while, do consider volunteering in an unpaid position.

While this is, deep down, something people rarely wish to do on their own; the reality of the job market is such that there will always be graduates who can afford to do so until they advance to a paid position.

With that in mind; trying to be among those people will surely net you an internship some time down the line.

Expand Your View

Sure, most of us would like to get an internship in NYC, especially if you went to school there. But you probably know what a certain proverb says about the plans of mice and men.

In the end, you may simply need to widen your scope to encompass as many internship possibilities as possible. And in order to do that, you can go in two different directions, or both at once.

First of all, you could consider broadening your professional definition; in other words, looking for more varied types of internships

that could lead to steady, full-time jobs. Sure, some of these may not be precisely where you pictured your career going; but it may be necessary.

And otherwise—you could consider going somewhere else instead of the Big Apple. While there are many industries here with plenty of job opportunities, things change—and you might find yourself being offered more internship positions elsewhere.

Don’t waste your time being solely focused on where you’d live.

Have An Online Presence

he Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is a Long Island based charity that is funded

by Long Island businesses and individuals, and used exclusively to support the students and schools of the Diocese of Rockville Centre.

The mission of Tomorrow’s Hope is to ensure the excellence and continuance of Catholic schools on Long Island by increasing awareness and by providing scholarship and program funding. Every student from grades K – 8 who are attending Catholic elementary school and are in need of tuition assistance are eligible to apply for an award which is based on the families current economic circumstances and financial need.

Applications for scholarship funding are typically made in January following Catholic Schools Week when many Long Islanders visit the school they plan on sending their children to in the following school year. Applications can be processed whether you have already registered at a school, or even if you haven’t registered yet. Only one application is necessary per household and multiple children’s needs can be

When an award is issued, the money goes directly to the school and is deducted from the school tuition bill. Each award is in name to the student, so even if the student transfers to another Catholic school the award money follows the student and doesn’t stay with the school.

How To Apply For A College Scholarship If you’re interested in applying for college scholarships, here’s a short checklist to help you along the way:

Step 1: Research scholar-

documentation Gather all your basic application documentation so that it’s easily accessible and readily available for inclusion with your scholarship

applications. Failing to submit all required documentation will automatically disqualify you from being awarded a scholarship, so be sure to make sure all your ‘i’s are dotted and ‘t’s are crossed. There’s nothing worse than finding out you didn’t receive a scholarship because of a silly mistake.

Binghamton University Teams Up With Nassau Community College Programs will ease student transition into pharmacy school

T

he Binghamton University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences has entered into a 2+4 articulation agreement with Nassau Community College that will ease the transfer of students into Binghamton’s Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program.

The agreement—a 2+4 program—allows students from Nassau Community College to complete their associate degree and PharmD degrees in only six years by transferring directly into Binghamton’s PharmD program to begin their professional course work after earning their associate degree in biology.

“Finalizing this articulation agreement with Nassau Community College is exciting not just for the Nassau students who will be able to transfer smoothly to Binghamton,” said School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Founding Dean Gloria Meredith. “It is also wonderful for us here at Binghamton to establish a stronger presence in a part of New York state where many of our students come from and where many of them will complete their clinical rotations. It’s a winning relationship for everyone.”

University regarding the 2+4 agreement that will create a pathway for students graduating from Nassau Community College to pursue the PharmD Degree at Binghamton University’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences,” said Valerie Collins, interim vice president for academic affairs at NCC. “Our Nassau students are well prepared to pursue this exciting opportunity. Nassau Community College is located on Long Island where healthcare is one of the largest industries and this agreement with Binghamton University will enable Nassau

students to receive a degree essential to meet the healthcare needs of individuals and families in the years ahead.”

Students must have successfully completed the required prerequisite credits from Nassau Community College with a minimum cumulative and math/ science grade point average (GPA) of 3.0, and apply no later than Jan. 1 of the year they plan to enroll at Binghamton, or Sept. 1 if they are participating in the Early Decision Process through PharmCas. They must also achieve a minimum composite score of 50 on the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT).

Binghamton’s School of Pharmacy also has 2+4 agreements with SUNY Broome Community College and SUNY Onondaga Community College, as well as 3+4 agreements with Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Wells College and Ithaca College.

Future Certified Healers

A hands-on path to success in the medical field offered at Hicksille High School

F

or the past three years, Hicksville High School (HHS) has offered interested students the opportunity to graduate with not only a Regents or Advanced Regents diploma, but with state-recognized Nurse Assistant Certification after two years and a minimum of 108 hours of outside clinical rotation experience. “Our goals are for each student to qualify for recognized certification and to meet our criteria of being college and career ready,” explained teacher Marie Brown.

Brown has taught the in-district Certified Nurse Assisting program since its inception three years ago.

Students attend class each morning for three periods and then carry a regular class load for the remainder of the day.

BOCES Nurse Assistant Program is offered through Barry Tech in Westbury and held in a specially-equipped classroom at HHS. The program includes in-class preparation for a wide range of nursing skills, a clinical rotation at a nearby nursing home, and webinars and videoconferencing with doctors across the nation. The high school accepts approximately 20 students to the program each year.

“This is a great place for students to start in the fields of medicine and health care. These days, it’s so very difficult for high school graduates to get into college-level programs, this is

She also carries a heavy academic load as a HHS junior, in addition to working part-time at a local store.

“I used to be very shy,” she shared.

“Working outside of school and being in the Nursing Assistant program has helped me to be more outgoing and proactive.”

Students can learn more about HHS’s program, as well as the many career opportunities supported by Nassau and Suffolk County BOCES— from aviation to veterinary science— through their high school guidance counselor.

Hicksville Middle School students and their parents are encouraged to research programs available through BOCES Career and Technical Education programs and/or to speak with his/her guidance counselor.

Inspired by cousins who are physicians in Germany, Zahra is very interested in pursuing a career in trauma surgery. In addition to her studies in HHS’s Nassau BOCES Barry Tech In-District Certified Nurse Assisting program, she volunteers every day after school at Winthrop Hospital, and is also enrolled in an anatomy class at SUNY Farmingdale.

Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, Long Island’s premiere career and technical education high school, is opening its doors to all students with a passion for a hands-on career.

The Barry Tech Open House will be held Saturday, Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Following an introduction to the school led by administration, there will be self-guided tours of the state-of-the-art facility. Teachers Achieve Gold Standard Certification

ew York State United Teachers (NYSUT) congratulates 97 teachers from across the state who have earned national certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the “gold standard” in the education profession.

In total, New York is home to 2,115 National Board Certified Teachers, who have completed a rigorous performance-based, peer-reviewed assessment process that includes a review of teaching portfolios, student work samples, videos and analysis of a candidate’s teaching and student learning. Sixty New York educators had their certifications renewed in 2019.

“New York’s National Board Certified Teachers are shining examples of the outstanding educators across the state who work so hard to help their students achieve their full potential,” NYSUT President Andy Pallotta said. “With

inequality in education among the most pressing issues of our time, this diverse group is proof that every corner of the state has dedicated teachers who believe in education and, most importantly, in their students.”

“National Board Certified Teachers show every day how transformative a high-quality education can be for our students,” NYSUT Executive Vice President Jolene T. DiBrango said. “To become certified, these teachers have demonstrated not just that they know their subject areas, but that they know their students, the challenges they face and how to help them grow. These educators are proof that teaching makes a difference.”

Achieving national certification is extraordinarily challenging. Candidates typically spend 200–400 hours of their own time having their teaching assessed against rigorous standards through

an extensive series of performance-based assessments, including teaching portfolios, student work samples, videos of their lessons, and thorough analyses and reflection of the candidate’s teaching and student learning. The process involves written exercises that probe the depth of the candidate’s subject-area knowledge, as well as their understanding of how to teach those subjects.

NYSUT assists national board candidates by offering awareness programs and support through online discussion forums, and conferences and professional development through its Education & Learning Trust. The union also aids state teacher centers in supporting candidates through the challenging board certification process. In addition, a state grant program helps pay the candidates’ application fees and other expenses.

To-date, McKenna’s charity has helped feed over 700 families by growing and donating an estimated 18,300 pounds of fresh produce.

McKenna’s inspiring story was selected by Chopra Jonas from a pool of highly qualified nominees. Together with Pilot, she’ll award McKenna and his school a combined $15,000 grant. He plans to use his $12,500 portion for college tuition, to gain the skills needed to make an even greater impact on social issues like hunger. The remaining $2,500 will go to his school to help continue fostering overachievement among its students.

Nassau County Joins Climate Smart Communities Program

assau County Executive Laura Curran was joined by New York State Senator Todd Kaminsky to announce Nassau County’s participation in the New York’s Climate Smart Communities Program and to adopt a series of Climate Smart goals. The bill was unanimously passed by the Nassau County Legislature in late December.

“It is our responsibility to protect our environment for generations to come and Nassau County stands ready to do our part,” Curran said. “We are pledging to make significant strides towards fighting climate change by joining the climate smart communities program. We are excited about the prospects of working together to create a more sustainable, cleaner New York.”

“New York is leading the way on combating climate change and ensuring a green, sustainable future for generations to come,” Kaminsky, chair of the NYS Senate Environmental Conservation Committee, said. “I commend County Executive Laura Curran on her commitment to making Nassau a climate smart community and transitioning away from inefficient and cost-prohibitive energy sources.”

By participating in the program Nassau County vows to: • Inventory greenhouse gas emissions to establish a baseline and reduction goals for county government operations • Decrease energy usage • Achieve/exceed LEED standards for new facility construction and incorporate energy efficient technology, where applicable and feasible • Convert county fleet to low/no emission and fuel-efficient vehicles • Shift to clean, renewable energy generation and procurement • Reduce solid waste generation and promote the reuse/recycling of items • Protect open space, biodiversity and water quality throughout the county • Support a green innovation economy • Establish public awareness campaigns on county’s green initiatives to encourage residents to be more environmentally responsible • Engage in evolving climate action research and policy at the local and regional level, be willing to consider new ideas —Submitted by the office of Nassau County Executive Laura Curran

Music To Your Mouth What to eat at a Grammy Awards viewing party

“I don’t know what this means. I don’t think it means anything.”—Eddie Vedder, of Pearl Jam, upon receiving a Grammy award in 1996 for Best Rock Performance.

Despite what the institution itself wants you to believe, Grammy awards are not the-end-all-beall vanguard of musical integrity. Sorry to tell your heart—your achy breaky heart—but a musician’s talent has nothing to do with the number of Grammy statuettes they have boxed away in their basement.

And you only need to do a moment’s worth of Internet research to find out just how wrong the Grammys have been through their decades of ceremonial award-giving.

Just naming a few instances: In 1989, they awarded the definitely not metal Jethro Tull over Metallica for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance; while 1993 saw the award for Best Rock Song go to Eric Clapton’s sleepy unplugged version of “Layla” over Nirvana’s music scene-altering “Smells Like Teen Spirit;” and, perhaps most famously, they gave the 1990 Best New Artist Award to Milli Vanilli, a duo who later divulged that they hadn’t

sung a single note on their debut album.

The point is, the Grammys is a mostly worthless, superficial evening that endeavors to quantify art with gold-plated trophies depicting a gilded gramophone. At best, it’s a fashion show—at worst, it’s a bastardization of all that is artistic and spits in the face of everything music lovers hold dear.

Perhaps most egregiously, the performances are all subpar because apparently the producers don’t think sound engineering is crucial for a music awards show.

What’s one to do when they’re forced to sit through at least two hours of this tone-deaf dreck? My advice would be to somehow make the Grammy awards all about food and stuff your face so full that your bloated cheeks expand enough to cover your ears and eyes, thereby protecting you from the audio nightmare on television.

It’s in that spirit that I present to you the 2020 Grammy Awards Party Menu! Consider presenting these dishes to your Grammy party guests, bringing them with you to your friends’ house or eating them alone while you lament the loss of artistic integrity in the 21st century!

Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress Carpaccio In 2010, Lady Gaga showed up at the MTV Video Music Awards wearing a dress made entirely of raw beef. Sure, the MTV award show is a different, somehow even more ludicrous event, but this infamous dress is simply too fitting to ignore. Also, Lady Gaga is nominated for an award this year. Simply take thinly sliced raw beef and fan out on a plate. If you’re feeling artistic, arrange the raw meat in the shape of a dress and complete the appetizer with a photo of Lady Gaga’s head strategically placed at the top. Drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice, and finish with capers and onions.

Ariana Nachos BellGrande This play on the Taco Bell menu mainstay Nachos BellGrande will have you saying “thank u, next” to bite after bite of taco-seasoned beef and nacho cheese sauce with all the fixings. Don’t overthink the process—just recreate it using Taco Bell’s classic ingredients of a heaping portion of crispy tortilla chips topped with ground beef, diced tomatoes, refried beans, nacho cheese sauce, and a dollop of sour cream. If you want to add a little Ariana-inspired twist, lay seven perfectly fried onion rings across the surface of the nachos in honor of her Grammy Award-nominated album of the (sorta) same name.

Lizzo’s Cuz I Love Bleu (Cheese Bites) She’s got a powerful voice, remarkable stage presence and eight nominations at this year’s Grammys to her credit—and now she’s also got an appetizer named after her latest album. With only three ingredients, Bleu Cheese Bites are an incredibly simple way to get your buttery, cheesy, tangy bleu cheese fix while watching the Grammys unfold. While the simplicity of this finger food doesn’t quite match the range of Lizzo as a performer, it does semi-rhyme with her album title—so that’s something.

Old Town Scones By Lil Nas X It wouldn’t be a Grammy party menu without honoring what is probably the most horrible song of last year. This nauseating mix of rap and country—featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, naturally—found its way into the mainstream in 2019, proving the theory that the most terrible, vapid musical creations somehow have the most wide-ranging mass appeal. It’s fitting that this awful collection of noises by Lil Nas X inspires one of the worst bites of food imaginable—the dry, chalking, barely edible scone. For the full experience, you must choke down Old Town Scones without anything to drink so that you can recreate the retching you felt when you first heard “Old Town Road.”

Lana Del A-Rey-Pas Lana Del Rey’s Grammy Award-nominated album mentions Norman Rockwell in the title track, so let’s go with a dish that definitely did not make it into any of the works of that painter of Americana. An ancient food originating from the northern part of South America, arepas are kind of a cross between a pancake and a tortilla. There are dozens of variations, with some filled with cheese and others transformed into sweet desserts. For this Grammy party, try stuffing with either black beans or pulled pork and finishing with Colombian-style queso fresco.

ome of the best and memorable performances during the Grammys happen when some of our favorite artists pair up with one another to provide a stirring rendition of a single song or a mash-up. Here are some of the best artist pairings the Grammys had to offer.

Lady GaGa and Metallica

This pairing was definitely a head banger, but also a head scratcher when unlikely duo Lady GaGa and heavy metal band Metallica took the Grammy stage together in 2017. The two performed Metallica’s “Moth Into Flame” with some impressive pyrotechnics going off behind them. At one point, GaGa even stage dived into the crowd below.

Jay-Z, Linkin Park and Paul McCartney

In 2006, the Grammys had Jay-Z, Linkin Park and Paul McCartney collaborate on a mash-up of their songs. This performance started out with Jay-Z and Linkin Park performing the song “Numb/Encore,” which was a hit track from their collaborative album, Collision Course. The performance then transitioned to feature McCartney’s “Yesterday” over the same exact beat proving to everyone that McCartney can still keep up with younger emerging artists. After the three ended their collaborative performance, they received a standing ovation from the crowd.

Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons

In 2014, a lot of people were amazed when rapper Kendrick Lamar teamed up with Imagine Dragons on the Grammy stage. The two performed a mashup of Imagine Dragon’s “Radioactive” and Lamar’s “M.A.A.D City.” When Lamar took the stage, the audience could definitely feel the amped up energy when Imagine Dragons jumped on the drums.

Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Ne-Yo and Smokey Robinson

Last year, Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Ne-Yo and Smokey Robinson hit the stage to celebrate the music of Motown. Some of the songs that were performed that night were “Dancing in the Street” and “Please Mr. Postman.” The performance, which pulled out all the stops in terms of choreography and costumes, drew some controversy. Some people were upset that Lopez was chosen to perform for the Motown tribute because she didn’t seem like the right fit. However, Robinson came to her defense after the performance saying, “I don’t think anyone who is intelligent is upset. I think everybody who is upset is stupid.”

Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya, Lil’ Kim, Missy Elliot and Patti LaBelle

What do you get when you put six top performers on stage together during the Grammys? One hell of a performance, that’s what. In 2002, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya, Lil’ Kim, Missy Elliot and Patti LaBelle performed “Lady Marmalade,” which was originated by LaBelle in the mid-’70s. The performance definitely didn’t disappoint those who were fans of the song, which is famous for its sexually suggestive chorus of “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)?”, which translates into English as “Do you want to sleep with me (tonight)?” “Lady Marmalade” was revamped in the early 2000s for the Moulin Rouge soundtrack.

Miley Cyrus and Elton John

No twerking was seen during this performance when Miley Cyrus and five-time Grammy winner Elton John joined forces on stage. The two performed John’s song “Tiny Dancer,” which appeared on John’s fourth album, Madman Across the Water.

The Grammy performance had John play the piano while Cyrus lovingly leaned over it. The performance was pretty tame compared to what Cyrus has normally done on stage. Not a single foam finger was in sight either. Bravo.

In 2005, Joss Stone and Melissa Etheridge teamed up for a Janis Joplin tribute. During that time, Stone was up for Best New Artist and definitely proved her worth on the stage when she gave a soulful and powerful performance of “Piece of My Heart,” alongside Etheridge. Joplin, who was known for her rock and bluesy-tones, passed away at the age of 27 in 1970.
