Falling For The Trends Interior designer Jenny Tzakas shares her insight on how to decorate your home this fall season BY EMILY SAUCHELLI

I

esauchelli@antonnews.com

nterior designer Jenny Tzakas said there are a lot of different trends for the fall season, but there is one trend that sticks out above the rest. “The most important trend for the fall is going to be designing your house to fit the new working from home lifestyle,” Tzakas said. “Home offices are the biggest thing because now people are working in their house. Their island is becoming their office. So adapting to the new working environment is definitely a trend that a lot of customers are asking for and also home gyms.” According to Tzakas, earth tones are a trend that will be popping up this coming fall. “Earth tones are browns, beiges and oranges,” she said. “If we are talking about colors, it transcends the entire house. I would say that wall color, flooring, really anywhere, but those would be the main areas—even cabinets.” Incorporating florals into your home design is going to be a big trend this fall as well. “Botanicals is a big trend for the fall and it is used a lot in dining rooms and foyers,” she said. “It can be any kind of floral wallpaper, not a specific type of floral. I would also add natural textures like grass cloth, silk and suede. Natural textures are also very big now with wallpaper. Besides floral, I would say grass cloth is definitely a top contender. Wallpaper in general—not just floral— you can put anywhere. Powder rooms are another place that you’ll see floral wallpaper.” Buying items that are the same style are things of the past since mixing and matching pieces is something that is encouraged nowadays. “Sets are no longer the trend,” she said. “You want a collection of things that don’t match perfectly. In general, you don’t want to buy a set. You don’t want things to match together. I like my rooms to be a collection of things that I love. So they don’t have to be match-y. They just have to work together.” A ’70s vibe trend, which can be described as retro and bohemian, is also making its way back into style. “Things such as curved lines and camelback furniture [are in trend],” she said. “There is not a specific color that is used only in ’70s décor. It’s kind of just the style that is reminiscent of that

time period. The colors tended to be golds, browns and earth tones, which were very popular in the ’70s, but it’s just a trend towards that kind of style. Psychedelic floral print, bohemian like macramé and the tulip chair was a very popular style chair in the ’70s. Macramé is a crocheted shag rug. Rattan furniture is very big right now.

Earth tones are becoming a popular color trend for the fall.

Rattan can be described as wicker furniture. It can be in living rooms, on sofas and on chairs. It can be anything, it can be light fixtures. You’re going to see a lot of geometric shapes with the furniture. Also orange color that is very ’70s.” Another trend on the horizon is customers wanting to be

environmentally-friendly, which is something Tzakas’ clients continue to express their concerns about. “They are being more environmentally-conscious when it comes to design by using more green products and paints that have environmentally-safe ingredients,” she said. “So, low VOS for paint, stains and even furniture. There are more products now that are more environmentally-friendly.” For this upcoming fall, not everything in a person’s home has to be of the same material. Tzakas said bringing a sense of uniqueness to your home is what is desired. “People used to be very, if we’re doing gold hardware in the kitchen, then everything has to be gold,” she said. “The light fixtures, the accessories all have to match. That’s not the case anymore. Mixing and making it kind of an eclectic look is very much the trend.” And if you’re on the hunt for new fall items to bring into your home, there are a variety of stores to choose from. “Anthropologie has a great home décor department and they’re very in touch with what’s on trend,” she said. “They have a very ’70s vibe and that’s kind of their style anyway. Anthropologie would be a place that I would recommend. Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel are others. They all kind of stay on trend and carry a little bit of everything. My kids probably know that HomeGoods is my favorite store. HomeGoods is definitely a shopper’s destination. You can get some really great accessories. I’ve gotten some great pieces. You can find some designer pieces occasionally. HomeGoods is definitely on the top of my list. I think Wayfair is a great online source, especially now with COVID-19 and a lot of the stores not being open. Wayfair is a great outlet to find things and they come to your house within a few days. IKEA is great for kid’s rooms, basements and home offices.” Tzakas owns and operates her own interior design business, Jenny Tzakas Interiors. Her design firm is based in Garden City. She serves the surrounding areas of Long Island, Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn. To learn more about her business and what services she provides, visit www. jennytzakasinteriors.com.

How framing art can elevate any space

IT’S ALL

BY EMILY SAUCHELLI

ABOUT

THE

6A

Frame

esauchelli@antonnews.com

Are you a person who loves art, but doesn’t know a thing about framing? Greg Schnoor is an expert in the art framing field and said framing is just as important as the art that goes inside it. “If you just take art and hang it on the wall without a frame it looks incomplete,” he said. “The framing and the matting that goes around the art enhances the piece and brings it out. It [the framing] finishes off the piece. The frame is designed to not only protect the art but to enhance it.”

Q A

What process do you use for finding the right frames for art? The customer comes in and you chat a few minutes. You ask the customer where they’re going to put it, what their thoughts are and if they had any thoughts on how they wanted to do it and then you go from there. I listen to the customer carefully. At the same time, I’ve been doing this for more than 40 years, so I guide the customer in the right direction. You want to find out what style house they have, traditional or

contemporary. What room of the house it’s [the frame] going in. You don’t put a formal frame for something that’s going in the kitchen or bathroom. Talking to the customer, you get a lead and then you go from there.

Q A

What frames do you suggest for different types of artwork? Framing is an art. There’s not one set of frames that go on photographs. You can have a wedding photograph versus a mountain scene, so that would tend to get different styles

of frames. For photographs, I would say, most of the time it’s more of a simple frame. Photographers tend to like a white matte in a black frame. Somebody can bring in a nice fine art piece and say they have a contemporary house, so you’re not going to show them traditional stuff. The same piece of artwork can be brought in by the next customer and say they have a traditional house and that’s going to be framed with traditional frames. It’s not always just the artwork; it’s where it’s going to hang that dictates the type of frame.

Q A

What styles are there for framing? Generally, when you think contemporary, you think of simple, clean lines. When you’re traditional, think of ornate with lots of grooves and beading. For traditional, we have lots of different shades of gold. The way that’s achieved is the color that you put under the gold and what you do on top of the gold changes the tint of the gold. Let’s say you have a

DESIGN & DÉCOR • SEPTEMBER 16 - 22, 2020

landscape and it’s got a lot of yellows and brown tones. You would not want a loud gold. You would go with a gold that has a brown antique color to it that would soften the gold to go with the picture. Contemporary art tends to be louder, brighter tones. There’s no specific color.

Q A

What is the difference between custom and ready-made frames? Custom versus ready-made is a world of difference. In custom, everything is coordinated around that piece of artwork and sized properly to the artwork. We’re designing and building that frame around that piece of art. When people buy the readymades, it never seems to fit quite right. There’s also quality difference. The ready-mades don’t have conservation glass to protect the artwork. They don’t have acid-free materials to protect the artwork. There’s so many little variables and tools that we have here that someone can’t possibly have at home.

Q A

For someone who has a low budget, what could be suggested for frames? A customer comes in and says I’m really price conscious and we can guide people to lower priced frames. I always tell a customer I’ll do as much or as little as you like. Sometimes people bring in a ready-made frame and I will make a beautiful matte and then fit it in for them. There’s different ways to save instead of going over the top with a total custom job. I’ll work up a job for a customer and they’ll say, ‘it’s higher than my budget, what can we do?’ We’ll change to a simpler frame. We’ll do a single matte instead of a double matte. Maybe we’ll take the conservation glass and use regular glass. All those things chip a little away at the price. They still get a nice job, but it’s still way above dropping it in a pre-made frame.

here. We have a full shop downstairs. We get photographs fine art prints, degrees. That would be the normal stuff, posters, fine art prints. Then you get people who have a family heirloom. We’ve framed wedding dresses. We do sports jerseys. You literally can frame anything. The sky’s the limit. Whatever you can bring in the door, we can figure out how to frame it.

Q A

Is there a certain framing trend that you noticed is becoming popular? Rustic frames are really hot right now. We have a line of reclaimed wood. They actually tear down old barns and cut up the barn wood and we make it into frames. It’s got nail holes with a little bit of rust and a lot of splintering. It’s all weathered from being in the elements for so many years. Greg Schnoor is the owner of Barnes What things can be framed? Make Your Vision Come Alive

(Photos courtesy of Safavieh)

Design the perfect room with Safavieh’s interior design experts BY CAROLINE RYAN

cryan@antonmediagroup.com

Safavieh, a high-end retailer for quality home furnishing offers complementary design services to help meet all of your design needs. Whether you are looking to create a room, or refresh an existing room in your home, hiring an interior designer can be an important part of the design process.

“S

afavieh is all about creating an environment where you feel comfortable living in your home—where everything makes sense,” Michael Yaraghi, the CEO of Safavieh, said. “We start from scratch, from the paint to the wallpaper to the lighting to the furniture. We do the whole thing for them so it’s done the right way and [all of the furniture fits]. People are often shocked what they can do with their space once it’s done by a professional designer versus the way they had it before—using their own expertise without having the knowledge of how things fit in a room.” From large area rentals, apartment living, residential homes or hospitality, Safavieh’s 64 interior designers are available to help create the ultimate space. “Safavieh is a high-end company, we carry the top brand names from Europe and the United States,” Yaraghi said. “The designers are very experienced. They go to High Point twice a year to see the latest colors and designs that are available.”

Yaraghi explained that each of the designers attend the High Point Market, the world’s largest home furnishings trade show twice a year to stay up to date on the latest fashion trends, having more opportunities for learning about fashion and interior design than your average retail designer. The biggest problem most people have when creating a space on their own is the scale of the room versus the size of the furniture, Yaraghi stated. With the complementary services offered at Safavieh, you don’t pay for the design expert yourself. An expert will consult with you about what you are looking to do in the room and they will scale the room to help you create a space that best fits your needs. Trends that have become more popular the last few months include natural wood, lighter grey tones, as well as fabrics that are stain-resistant especially now that so many are working and learning from home. “The lifestyle is becoming more casual, open concepts, lighter colors, white is becoming popular as far as

paint color,” Yaraghi said. “People are spending a lot more time inside the house. The lighter colors will make you feel you are outdoors. People are using [stain-resistant] fabrics, especially if they have children. If you even drop a glass of wine, it will come right out. It’s a huge improvement in technology.” Disrupting your day-to-day activities to transform a room can seem overwhelming. Luckily, Safavieh has several large warehouses across the tri-state area, making the transition to a new or refurbished room a rather short process. After two meetings with the interior design expert to discuss the overall vision for the project, the designer can begin helping you create your dream room. Yaraghi stated that a room is typically designed and ready for use in as little as four days or a week. So, why hire a Safavieh design expert to create your space when there are plenty of home furnishing stores nearby? The answer is simple. Safavieh has more than 200 different brands, offering you a wide array of options. “With us the sky is the limit,” Yaraghi said. “Whether you want top-of-theline furniture from Italy or you want an American brand, you could have a budget for $5,000 or $500,000. That’s what is so special about Safavieh, you’re not limited to anything, any

lifestyle, any price point, large or small—we can do it for you.” The retailer has also taken recent precautions against the COVID-19 pandemic, offering clients a safe, yet socially distant experience in their showrooms. Each showroom is extremely large, which already allows visitors to safely remain six-feet from one another. Clients and staff are required to wear a face covering at all times while in the building. “We have created these rooms at our design center, if say there are six clients working with their designers they are all going to be in separate rooms,” Yaraghi said. “Before we were all sharing a room because we had multiple people working in one design center. Now they are social distancing and they each in a separate room with a large TV screen [for viewing] so the clients don’t have to get close to anyone. We have cleaning services that come before we open the showroom and again before we [leave at night] they do the same thing.” Safavieh has showrooms located in Port Washington, Glen Cove, Manhasset and Farmingdale, as well as several locations in New Jersey, Connecticut and New York City.
