Exciting Times, Exciting Challenges And so is the description of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Rockville Centre for the 2016-17 school year.

As the school year unfolds, we are called to take a look at our schools and the wonderful instruments of academic success, social justice and spiritual growth they are in our society. This is indeed an awesome responsibility but one that is very achievable and has proven its effectiveness by the legacy of Catholic education in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. The Diocese continues to make a commitment to supporting and invigorating the role of Catholic education in the 21st Century. Evidence of this can be seen in the establishment of the department of education center which is housed in the former Sisters of Mercy Convent at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School. This stateof-the-art facility is now home to the Department of Education and will be

For the more than six million children living with asthma nationwide, gearing up for another school year involves much more than picking out a new pencil case and backpack.

Asthma is the third leading cause of hospitalization among children in the U.S. under the age of 15 and one of the main reasons that students miss school due to illness, with more than 10 million lost school days every year.

To get ready for a successful school year, the American Lung Association recommends this back-to-school checklist for families with asthma:

1. Schedule a check-up with your child’s physician.

Use your yearly check-up to create or revise your Asthma Action Plan, check the effectiveness of asthma medication and dosage, and get prescriptions for back-up medications for your school nurse, coaches, after-school programs and other individuals helping with your child’s care.

2. Assess your child’s readiness to self-carry medication.

All 50 states have laws that allow children to self-carry and use their asthma inhalers at school. Use the American Lung Association’s Self-Carry Assessment Tool to see if your child is ready to carry and

self-administer his or her asthma medication, which can save precious time, as well as ease concern if your child has an asthma episode at school.

3. Set up an appointment with your school nurse.

Remember to bring in your updated Asthma Action Plan and back-up medications. Take this time to sign all required medical forms and talk about whether your child can self-carry his or her own quick-relief inhaler, and how to manage any asthma emergencies that may happen during the school year.

4. Talk to your classroom teacher.

Take a moment to talk to your child’s teacher about his or her asthma, what triggers might bring on an attack and what to do in an emergency—whether that is to head directly to the school nurse or use a quick-relief inhaler.

5. Introduce yourself to the PE teacher and any coaches.

Kids with asthma shouldn’t have to miss out on playing outside or participating in gym class. You can quickly put minds at ease by talking about exercise-induced asthma, ways to manage symptoms and what to do in an emergency.

6. Have fun!

There’s a lot to do at the start of the school year, but it can also be exciting to see old school friends and prep for a whole new year. Make sure to take a deep breath and enjoy.

Nassau County Health Commissioner Dr. Lawrence Eisenstein reminds parents that updating their children’s vaccinations should be added to their back-to-school list. Vaccines offer the best known protection against many life-threatening and debilitating diseases.

In addition to the state required immunizations for day care settings, schools and health care providers, the following are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: influenza, rotavirus, hepatitis A and human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccines.

“Nassau County continues to see cases of vaccine-preventable diseases, including mumps and pertussis, said Eisenstein. “Protecting our children from preventable diseases will keep them healthy and in school. Vaccines are recommended throughout our lives and are a proven and successful public health tool in protecting society from many of these serious diseases.”

Vaccines are recommended for infants, children, teenagers and adults based on many different factors including age, health conditions, lifestyles, occupation and travel. Vaccination is a critical step in protecting those who are most vulnerable to illness—infants and young children, the elderly and those with chronic conditions and weakened immune systems.

Smart Packing Tips For Better School Lunches

Despite one’s best intentions to send kids to school with a healthy homemade lunch, a lot can happen between the time you pack it up at home and when your child unpacks it in the cafeteria.

No one wants a soggy sandwich or warm milk for lunch. And not only are some lunchtime woes unappetizing, they can pose health risks.

Perishable food transported without a cooling source won’t stay safe for long. Indeed, harmful bacteria multiply rapidly after only two hours in the “danger zone,” the temperatures between 40 and 140 degrees F, according to the USDA. Here are some lunch-packing tips to keep foods safer, fresher and tastier:

Top to Bottom You may be in a rush in the morning, but take the time to take a packing cue from the bagging experts at your local grocery store. Pack strategically, with heavy items like apples and oranges on the bottom and lighter more fragile items like pretzels and peanut butter and jelly on top.

Encourage kids to do likewise in their book bags, cubbies and lockers. Books should never be piled on top of lunch.

Skip the Brown Bag Disposable brown bags get soggy, threatening student’s math homework, electronic devices and other book bag contents. More importantly, a thin paper bag does nothing to keep lunch cool and safe to eat.

If you are going to pre-slice apples or pears, be sure to store them an airtight baggie to prevent browning.

Back-To-School Tax Breaks

As a new school year approaches, the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance reminds students and parents about money-saving tax breaks on purchases of certain clothing and footwear, and on course textbooks for college students.

“New Yorkers can enjoy substantial savings year-round with this program,” New York State Commissioner of Taxation Finance Jerry Boone said.

“Whether you’re buying clothes for school or purchasing textbooks for the upcoming semester, New York State is helping to make it more affordable.”

Sales tax exemption on clothing and footwear

In New York State, qualifying clothing and footwear purchases are exempt from state sales tax yearround. Many states offer “sales tax holidays” leading up to the school year, but in New York State, clothing and footwear are always exempt from the state’s 4 percent sales tax when they are sold for less than $110.

Clothing and footwear items sold

for less than $110 are, also exempt from local sales tax year-round in New York City and the eight counties listed below. The combined state and local sales tax savings available in these localities could be as much as $9.65 on every $110 purchase.

In 2016, the state exemption alone is expected to save New York shoppers more than $891 million. Savings from the combined state and local sales tax exemptions are well over $1 billion annually.

This exemption applies to articles of clothing and footwear worn by humans that sell for less than $110 per item or pair, regardless of the total dollar value of all exempt items

purchased. Examples of exempt items include: aerobic clothing; athletic clothing (but not equipment); bathing suits; coats; dresses; hats; hosiery; pants; shirts; shoes; sleepwear; underwear. For example: You purchase two shirts, two pairs of pants, and a dress. Each item costs less than $110, but the total amount of the purchase is $190. All the items purchased qualify for the exemption since each individual item costs less than $110.

Unfortunate for keeping it local, New York City is the closest locale to Nassau County offering the sales tax break for clothing and footwear purchases. The eight counties offering tax breaks are: Chautauqua, Chenango,

Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Hamilton, Tioga, and Wayne.

College textbooks: when they’re exempt from tax

Course textbooks—when full or part-time college students purchase them—are also exempt from New York State and local sales and use taxes throughout the year. Students can make qualifying purchases from any bookstore (including college or university bookstores), by mail order, or over the internet. If sales tax is erroneously charged, students can file form AU-11 (www.tax.ny.gov/bus/ ads/au11.htm) to receive a sales tax refund on the purchase.

Start Of School Increases Risk Of Lice

It is no coincidence that September is National Head Lice Prevention Month. With the start of a new school year comes the increased risk and reported cases of head lice. We caught up with Carol Gilbert, co-owner of Fairy LiceMothers, who had some useful tips for prevention as well as detection and treatment.

Head lice (louse is the singular) are a parasite, specific to humans.

While there are other types of lice that infest other animals and other parts of the body, head lice feed only on human blood from the scalp.

Infestation begins when a pregnant louse crawls onto your head from another infested person and lays eggs every day. Those eggs hatch into babies but quickly become reproducing adults in just one week. The eggs and babies are not contagious until they mate, become pregnant, and continue their life cycle.

“Sit your kids down once a week and comb through their hair with a nit comb (found at any drugstore) and a little detangling conditioner,” said Gilbert.

An itchy scalp is not always the only indication of a lice infestation. Gilbert said itching is an allergic reaction to the bugs’ saliva, similar to mosquito bites; some people do not itch when bit.

Gilbert said she thinks lice

infestation has become worse.

“People are not checking their kids regularly,” Gilbert said.

“Some people have lice for months before it is detected; and in three or four weeks, the whole family can be infected— mom, dad, grandma, siblings.”

She said prescriptions from the doctor are not working well anymore because bugs have developed an immunity to the formulas; this prompted the “super bug” scare with most medications, antibiotics

and treatments years ago.

“Nothing kills lice eggs; it’s a manual process, strand-by-strand, with a wet comb,” Gilbert said. Lice cannot be washed away. A louse can hold its breath for up to eight hours; a shower or bath does not get rid of lice.

“Doctors do not want you in their office [for lice] and it’s just not necessary,” Gilbert said. “You do not need to see a doctor for lice; however, if you are not sure what you are doing for proper treatment you should get help from a professional.” She also recommended checking out the video on their website (www.fairylicemothers.com) to help you through the process of at-home removal.

“The longer you wait, the worse it gets,” said Gilbert. “Lice is considered a dirty thing, a stigma; it’s important to communicate an

infestation with everyone you have been in contact with for the last couple of weeks, especially play dates, a school nurse or a camp counselor.”

Gilbert, along with Michelle Villella and Christine Bonanno, founded Fairy LiceMothers in 2008 as an at-home service in Oceanside.

The response was overwhelmingly popular (great for them; bad for you) that they have opened three local stores (Oceanside, Deer Park and Glen Head) and one store in Austin, TX, since then.

“Every human is susceptible to lice unless you are bald,” said Gilbert. “It’s not about blaming; it’s about getting proper treatment.”

“Another great thing to do is to go up high on top of the closet. I like milk crates because they’re light and easy to stack,” she said. “A desktop organizer is a good thing to have to keep not only your stuff but your thoughts organized.”

As for utilizing wall space, Pollack, who is a huge fan of hooks, suggested the sticky hooks (like Command hooks) as they can hold a decent amount of weight and don’t ruin the walls. Hanging pajamas, sweatshirts, backpacks, purses and hats also saves some room in the closet.

“Don’t worry about the whole year, just get yourself set up,”

As you begin to pack your child’s life into the car as they set off for college, you’ll notice just how much “stuff” they accumulate. Organizing expert Jill Pollack said the best use of space in a small dorm room is under the bed.

“You definitely have to utilize that space, so look for bins and

boxes for under the bed storage like low, flat containers,” she said.

“Those are perfect for sweaters or boots and since closet space is premium, you won’t have room for a shoe bag on the door, so it’s a good solution.”

Pollack also recommended using a shoe bag for the bathroom, especially if your new student is sharing a suite. Hair products, shampoo, slippers and shave gel are great items to stick right into the holders.

It’s also a smart idea to bring a good laundry basket and extra set of sheets so if the college freshman doesn’t feel like doing laundry,

“Always find time and learn to manage it. Make an appointment with yourself for things you need to do, when and where you like to study, when you’ll do laundry, etc.” she said. “See what makes sense and don’t forget to socialize.”

A crucial component to getting used to any dorm room is the person you’ll be sharing it with, since you will be living with this roommate for the better part of a year, another change to adjust to.
