When the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) opens at the Jacob Javits Convention Center on March 25, it will be part of history.

Maserati To Unveil New SUV To North America

The Maserati Levante—the first SUV in the brand’s more than 100year history—will make its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show next week.

The new model completes the existing range of saloon and sports cars, extending the offering together with the Quattroporte, Ghibli, GranTurismo and GranCabrio models.

The design of the Levante features clear associations with the Maserati brand and its distinctive Italian character: the aggressive front introduces new, tapered headlights separated into two elements, with the upper headlight unit connected to the radiator grille. Maserati’s design signature is clearly visible on the sides: the three, iconic air vents on the front wings, the trapezoidal C-pillar with the “Saetta” logo and the large, frameless door windows.

The rear is dominated by the very tapered back window and streamlined shape, both typical of a high-performance sports car.

At a technical level, the Levante’s chassis is designed to combine the outstanding on-road performance typical of every Maserati with excellent off-road performance and ride.

The new SUV boasts a high level of content as standard, with all versions featuring: sophisticated electronic suspension with controlled damping and air springs, which can be set on several levels, “Q4” intelligent allwheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission specially calibrated for the brand’s new SUV. The standard Levante model has a V6 engine and goes from 0-62 mph in six seconds, with a top speed of more than 155 mph.

Maserati’s website describes the

SUV’s design like “a wave that’s been waiting to take shape, there is pure poetry in the sculpted lines of Levante. Far more than just another example of Maserati’s superb automotive design, Levante features class leading aerodynamics with standard active grill shutters and air suspension that give the vehicle an extraordinarily low drag coefficient while guaranteeing optimal engine cooling in any driving condition.”

The Levante will also be available with in sport or diesel models.

Mercedes-AMG E43 Screams Into New York

The first high-performance variant of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class will make its world debut at the New York International Auto Show.

The Mercedes-AMG E43, boasting a 3.0-liter V6 Biturbo engine, will represent the most powerful variant of the luxury sedan when it hits dealerships by early 2017. This high-powered six-cylinder engine delivers an output of 396 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque.

The AMG Performance 4MATIC fourwheel drive combines optimum traction with high agility on the AMG E43, thanks to rear-biased torque distribution with a front-to-rear ratio of 31:69 percent. The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission with shorter shift times, AMG AIRMATIC Adaptive Sport Suspension and the more direct steering ratio also provide for signature AMG Driving Performance.

On the AMG E43, Mercedes-AMG has upgraded the six-cylinder engine’s output by 34 hp to 396 hp with the aid of two larger turbo chargers and sophisticated AMG software. This package guarantees performance on par with many a sports car: the new AMG E43 achieves a 0-60 time in 4.5 seconds, while its top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

Car Organization Ideas To Avoid Clutter On Wheels

No one wants to drive to work or school in a car overloaded with clutter. It just adds stress to the start of your day, and who needs that.

Ever car is different so when you come to organize yours, look at why it is cluttered and then decide how you can fix the problem. Think about what you have trouble finding, as well as what doesn’t need to be in your car.

My two main problem areas were having nowhere easily accessible to put rubbish and not having enough hands to carry things that accumulate in the car back into the house.

Both were easily resolved with a plastic carrier bag.

Here are some helpful car organizing tips: • Whenever you introduce a new item into your car, take one out.

Items where this rule would easily apply are things like CDs. Keep five in the car, and then swap them out

with new ones. Don’t just add to the pile.

• Keep a spare bag in the car to collect the items that accumulate, so you can carry them into the house easily.

• Get your kids into the habit of returning toys they take into the car back into the house. My son is a major contributor to the clutter in the car, so I am going to implement this from now on.

• Do something with those loose coins that are in the car. I currently keep a just a few coins in the cup holder but you could make a little coin pouch and velcro it underneath the seat or somewhere else a bit more out of sight.

Use those storage solutions that are already built into your car. You may find that you have plenty of little cubbies to use to store things without needing to buy any organizers. We

have a sunglasses holder, and we’ve never lost our sunglasses since using it. How about the center

console?

Most are pretty small, but a notepad and pen and a few tissues or baby wipes will never go amiss.

Use a “grip it” shelf or drawer liner on your dashboard. You can buy much more than you need for about $3 a roll. It will cling to your dashboard, and you can then “stick” your phone or sunglasses to it.

A hint at Acura’s 2017 MDX Acura recently announced that the 2017 Acura MDX, the brand’s best-selling luxury SUV, will make its world debut at the New York International Automobile Show (NYIAS) next week. With this new model, Acura joins the lineup of two dozen other automakers planning to launch a wide range of new vehicles at

this year’s show.

The redesigned and re-engineered model will boast substantial design enhancements, added luxury comfort and convenience features, and advanced new powertrain technology, in concert with the Acura brand’s focus on Precision Crafted Performance.

“We are sharpening our focus on

the Precision Crafted Performance DNA of the Acura brand, and the 2017 MDX will integrate new styling elements and powertrain technology that takes us another step in that direction,” said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. According to the company, the

Acura MDX is the best-selling three-row luxury SUV of all time and Acura’s best-selling SUV, with sales topping 50,000 units in each of the past three years.

The 2017 MDX was designed by the Acura Design Studio in Torrance, CA, and will continue to be produced at the company’s Alabama auto plant.

Major Enhancement To DMV Facial Recognition Program

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced its facial recognition program to help combat identity theft and fraud, as well as remove high-risk drivers from the road. The DMV, a national leader in the use of facial recognition technology, recently implemented an improved system that doubles the number of measurement points mapped to each digitized driver photograph to vastly improve the system’s ability to match a photograph to one already in the database.

“This software is helping the DMV crack down on people who break the law and ultimately keep the roads safer for drivers and passengers,” said Governor Andrew Cuomo. “New York has quickly become a national leader in implementing this technology, and we will continue to raise the bar to ensure safer and more secure communities statewide.”

The facial recognition software converts digital facial photographs into mathematical algorithms and presents trained staff with photo images that

have been identified as having similar algorithms. Photos are run against more than 8,000 new photos taken each day at DMV offices statewide, as well as about 16 million photos already in DMV’s database.

The new system increases the number of measurement points on the face from 64 to 128 and allows for the ability to overlay images, invert colors and convert images to black and white to better see scars and identifying features on the face. Different hair styles, glasses and other features that change over time—including those that evolve as a subject ages—do not prevent the system from matching photographs.

The DMV will not issue a driver license or non-driver ID until the newly captured photograph is cleared through the new facial recognition system.

“DMV continues to use the latest technology to achieve our goal of ‘one driver, one record’ and keep New Yorkers safe by holding individuals accountable who try to exploit state licensing systems,” said New York State Executive Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan. “I’m pleased that we are expanding the facial recognition program to catch

motorists who shouldn’t be on the road: those who evade tickets, commit fraud, and carry out extreme measures to disobey the law.”

Since the facial recognition technology was implemented in 2010, more than 3,600 individuals have been arrested for possessing multiple licenses.

Additionally, more than 10,500 facial recognition cases have been solved administratively. If the transactions are too old to pursue criminal prosecution, DMV is still able to hold subjects accountable by revoking licenses and moving all tickets, convictions and crashes to the individual’s true record. Individuals who are arrested based on facial recognition matches are typically charged with filing a false instrument, tampering with public records, and forgery.

Cases in which facial recognition technology has helped investigators catch the perpetrators include: • A man who collected more than $80,000 in fraudulent Social Security benefits under two identities.

• A woman who collected $334,000 in fraudulent benefits from the New York State Insurance Fund while working under an alias and collected $190,000 in fraudulent Social Security benefits while working under an alias.

• A man who created two identities and possessed two Class E licenses (allowing him to drive taxis, livery cabs, or limousines): one that was valid and ensured he was able to keep driving and one that was suspended and revoked in 2003 for DWI. He was found to have a total of 268 open suspensions and two open revocations on the license that was not valid.

Top 10 world car awards finalists announced

The journey on The Road to the World Car continues with the recent announcement of the finalists in all five award categories.

The 2016 World Car Awards prize-giving ceremony will be hosted by the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Winners of the 2016 World Car of the Year, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year will all be declared.

A jury of 73 distinguished, international automotive journalists selected the following finalists in the World Car of the Year, World Luxury Car and World Performance Car categories by secret ballot based on their experience with each candidate as part of their professional work.

The international accounting firm KPMG tabulated the jurors’ ballots and announced the finalists.

Cars eligible for the 2016 World Car Design of the Year award are taken from the list of World Car candidates or may be included as a stand-alone entry provided the vehicle is available in quantities of at least 10 in one major market during the period. Candidates may be pre-production or allnew production.

The Road to the World Car began in Paris in October, followed by a stop in Los Angeles for a test-drive of the North American contenders in November. The journey ends at the NYIAS on Thursday, March 24.

The 2016 World Car of the Year will be selected from the following 10 finalists listed in alphabetical order.
