What Is That

Dashboard Light Telling You?

Y

ou may have noticed the illuminated symbols on your dashboard when you start your car. While these lights usually go off right away and are soon forgotten, motorists should be car care aware and learn the meaning of their vehicles’ dashboard lights. “Warning lights on the dashboard are simply that, warnings. If one of the lights stays on after you start your car, you could potentially

have a problem and should have your vehicle inspected for needed repairs,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “By checking your owner’s manual and learning the meaning of each specific dashboard warning light, you’ll be better prepared to take action if one illuminates.” While dashboard lights may vary by vehicle, the following are examples of common warning lights.

Check Engine Light The check engine light usually indicates that a vehicle system, such as the ignition, fuel injection or emission control, is not operating properly, even if the vehicle appears to be running normally. A glowing check engine light doesn’t mean you have to immediately pull the car

American Drivers Unprepared For Summer Driving Season

AAA offers the following tips to help avoid common roadside problems

BY ALEC J. SLATKY specialsections@antonmediagroup.com

This summer, AAA expects to rescue more than seven million American drivers, who most commonly face battery, lock and tire-related issues. In New York, AAA expects to rescue nearly 300,000 drivers this summer— equivalent to one every 30 seconds, on average. AAA reminds drivers to take the necessary precautions to ensure they are well prepared for a safe road trip. “While drivers enjoy ‘Hot Fun in the Summertime,’ the heat takes a toll on vehicles, leading to overheating engines, tire blowouts, and dead batteries,” said Robert Sinclair Jr., manager of media relations for AAA Northeast. “Drivers should take proactive steps before they hit the road to reduce the risk of their vehicle becoming disabled.”

Unfortunately, AAA survey data has found that many drivers are unprepared

21A

for roadside emergencies: Other findings from AAA’s • One-third of American drivers have 2017 roadside assistance skipped or delayed maintenance that data show:

was recommended by their mechanic. • Two-thirds of American drivers have never proactively had their car battery tested. • Sixty percent of American drivers do not check their tire pressure at least once a month—including 25 percent who check less often than every few months.

• Dead batteries, flat tires, and lockouts are top reasons for summer roadside assistance calls. • While more than half of members’ problems are resolved at the roadside by AAA, more than 3 million drivers will experience vehicle issues that require a tow to a repair facility during the summer.

Schedule A Checkup Take your vehicle to a trusted repair facility to perform any needed maintenance before heading out. Oil changes, fluid level checks, battery tests and tire inspections go a long way toward reducing the chances of a breakdown. AAA’s Mobile Battery Service offers free battery testing for AAA members. Pack An Emergency Kit Every vehicle should be equipped with a well-stocked emergency kit that includes a mobile phone and car charger, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, jumper cables and emergency flares or reflectors, medication, water, and snacks for travelers and pets. Prevent Lockouts Bring a spare car key on every trip. Avoid exposing keyless-entry remote or smart keys to water and always replace the key or fob battery when recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. —Alec J. Slatky writes for AAA Northeast.

What Is That

Dashboard Light

Telling You?

WARNING LIGHTS from page 19A to the side of the road, but it should be inspected as soon as possible. A flashing check engine light requires immediate attention.

Brake System An illuminated brake system light could mean the parking brake is on, the brake fluid is low, or there is an issue with the anti-lock braking system (ABS). Check to make sure the parking brake is off and have a professional technician check the brake fluid level and diagnose if there is an ABS issue.

TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) The TPMS light indicates that a tire has low air pressure or there could be an issue with the sensor. Tire pressure should be checked immediately. Some vehicles will allow manual reset of the TPMS warning light while

others may require you to bring the vehicle to a professional service technician to reset it.

Oil Pressure Warning When the oil pressure warning light stays lit, it indicates loss of oil pressure. Have the oil level and pressure checked immediately.

Battery/Charging Alert The battery/charging alert indicates that battery voltage level is below normal and the charging system is not functioning properly. Check battery terminals, alternator belt and battery condition.
