How Hybrids Vehicles Work Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are powered by an internal combustion engine or other propulsion source that can be run on conventional or alternative fuel and an electric motor that uses energy stored in a battery. HEVs combine the benefits of high fuel economy and low emissions with the power and range of conventional vehicles.

A wide variety of hybrid electric vehicles is currently available. Although HEVs are often more expensive than similar conventional vehicles, some cost may be recovered through fuel savings or state incentives.

Help from an Electric Motor Hybrid electric vehicles are powered by an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, which uses energy stored in batteries. The extra power provided by the electric motor allows for a smaller engine. Additionally, the battery can power auxiliary loads like sound systems and headlights and reduce engine idling when stopped.

Together, these features result in better fuel economy without sacrificing performance.

Regenerative Braking A hybrid electric vehicle cannot plug into off-board sources of electricity to charge the battery. Instead, the

vehicle uses regenerative braking and the internal combustion engine to charge. The vehicle captures energy normally lost during braking by using the electric motor as a generator and storing the captured energy in the battery. The energy from the battery provides extra power during acceleration.

Fuel-Efficient System Design HEVs can be either mild or full hybrids, and full hybrids can be designed in series or parallel configurations.

• Mild hybrids—also called micro hybrids—use a battery and electric motor to help power the vehicle and can allow the engine to shut off when the vehicle stops (such as at traffic lights or in stop-and-go traffic), further improving fuel economy.

Mild hybrid systems cannot power the vehicle using electricity alone.

These vehicles generally cost less than full hybrids but provide less

substantial fuel economy benefits than full hybrids.

• Full hybrids have more powerful electric motors and larger batteries, which can drive the vehicle on just electric power for short distances and at low speeds. These systems cost more than mild hybrids but provide better fuel economy benefits.

There are different ways to combine the power from the electric motor and the engine. Parallel hybrids—the most common HEV design—connect the engine and the electric motor to the wheels through mechanical coupling. Both the electric motor and the internal combustion engine drive the wheels directly. Series hybrids, use only the electric motor to drive the wheels, are sometimes found in plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.

Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles have an internal combustion engine and electric motor. These vehicles are powered by an alternative fuel or a conventional fuel, such as gasoline, and a battery, which you can plug in to charge.

Garden City officials and AAA Northeast New York region executives participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony recently opening the doors of the new store at 1140 Franklin Ave. in Garden City.

Participating in the ceremony were Garden City Mayor Nick Episcopia, Garden City trustee and liaison to the business community John Delany, Garden City Chamber of Commerce President Tom McCambridge, First Vice President John Appelt, Executive Director Althea Robinson, Assistant Director Elizabeth Denby and board members Tim McCue, Kristen Lard, Alan Schwartz, John Wilton, Stephen Peck and Pat Donnelly.

AAA Northeast New York region Vice President of Travel Rich Siragusa and Vice President of Insurance Kevin Crossley joined the dignitaries to cut the ribbon of the new state-of-the-art 3,000-square foot store.

“Garden City is very beautiful, centrally located and an excellent example of road safety,” said Robert Sinclair, Jr., manager of media relations for AAA. “It’s the perfect location for our new store, just a few blocks from our previous location. Store visitors will be able to continue to take advantage of all the services we offer in a beautiful new location with lots of

free parking,” Sinclair said.

The new office continues to provide a variety of AAA offerings. For example, travel counselors prepare personalized travel routings and offer maps and brochures to help members. Visitors also can discuss

plans for cruises, tours, travel packages or airline flights. Members needing insurance services may obtain free quotes on home, life and travel insurance or may learn more about AAA’s many insurance and financial service products. Movie,

amusement park and other entertainment-related tickets are available at deep discounts. The office also offers DMV license renewal, vision tests and New York identification cards. The store also offers auto- and travel-related products.

DMV Reminds Commercial Drivers Of New Federal ID Requirements

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminded commercial drivers across New York State that beginning June 18, all Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) and Commercial Driver License (CDL) holders in New York State need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residence or temporary legal presence, and proof of New York State residency upon renewal of a driver license, as well as all non-duplicate CLP/CDL transactions.

Because these new regulations from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration require

submission of additional proofs of identification in person, current commercial drivers can no longer renew their permits and licenses by mail and must appear in person at a DMV office.

“We’ve been working with industry and our partners at the state and federal levels to roll out these and other new federal requirements for commercial drivers as smoothly as possible,” said DMV Deputy Commissioner Tim Lennon. “Commercial drivers are extremely important to New York’s economy, and we are working every day to ensure that our state is in full compliance with these federal regulations.”

If you are a New York State license holder and you are applying for,

renewing or amending a CLP or CDL license, under these new federal regulations, you must provide: • Proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or temporary legal presence; and • Six points of proof of name; and • One proof of NYS residence; and If you are a first time applicant for a New York State CDL who holds a valid CDL in another state, you must provide: • Proof of U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or temporary legal presence; and • Proof of date of birth; and • Six points of proof of name; and • One proof of NYS residence; and • Your original Social Security card

CLP and CDL holders in New York State must provide original documents, or documents certified by the agency that issued them.

DMV began implementing the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s amended commercial driver license standards in April 2015 and will complete carrying out these regulations in July 2015. These regulations include changes to CDL skills testing, suspension and revocation screenings, medical certifications, endorsements and restrictions, identification and documentation changes, and an expansion of employer responsibilities.

Clean Pass Program Encourages Fuel Efficiency

New York’s Department of Transportation, Department of Motor Vehicles and Department of Environmental Control have been rewarding environmentally conscious drivers since 2006 through its Clean Pass Program. The program provides stickers to car owners to place on their vehicle if it passes certain fuel-efficiency requirements, and those stickers allow them to drive in the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Lane, regardless of the number of occupants in their vehicle.

As part of the Strategic Energy Action Plan, the program was designed to encourage the purchase and use of energy-efficient vehicles through the incentive of using the HOV lane for an easier commute.

The nine year-old program was started as a one-year pilot program in 2006 and, after analyzing traffic data and environmental standards, adds new vehicles to the eligibility list each year. A list of those cars that are eligible can be found online

(www.dmv.ny.gov/more-info/ clean-pass-stickers-high-occupancy-vehicle-lanes-long-island-expressway). Cars do not come with the stickers, so if you purchase an eligible

car, be sure to apply online or over the phone. The stickers remain with the car throughout its lifetime, regardless of the owner.

Since the program’s inception,

25,747 stickers have been issued, with Nassau and Suffolk leading the way amongst New York counties in eligible purchases, according to Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Eileen Peters. Peters said that .8 percent of all cars in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties have the stickers, accounting for 49 percent of the vehicles in the HOV lanes on the Long Island Expressway during the westbound peak hour, and 36 percent during the eastbound peak hour.

“Statistics on the environmental impact of the Clean Pass program are not available,” Peters explained.

“However, given the stringent requirements of low emission vehicles (LEV), the popularity of the program, and frequent use of the LIE HOV lane by Clean Pass vehicles, we are reassured the Clean Pass program is having a positive impact on Long Island’s environment.”

The first episode “Custom Overrive” aired on June 23 on the History Channel. A father wants to customize and restore a 1981 Chevy Camaro for his 21-year-old son, whom is away at college. The timeframe for this restoration is three weeks; an average job like this one is typically three to five months. Can Leepu and Pitbull overcome their design and mechanical challenges in time for the son’s return home?

In the second episode, “Wild Ride” —Compiled by Christy Hinko which aired on June 30, the team

customizes a 1972 Ford Ranchero to be show-ready for the 2015 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), held in April 2015 at the Jacob Javitts Center in Manhattan.

Myles Kovacs, owner of Dub magazine, brings the project car in from California. It’s his father’s car and if the redesign goes well, Kovacs will feature the car in Dub magazine and show the car at the auto show four weeks later.

Leepu’s inspiration for the redesign...waves, flames and wheels. Will the custom-wheels arrive in time for the auto show? Pitbull seeks help from JTM Motorsports in Deer Park, TNT Engineering in Leesport, PA, Freddy Brown Transmissions in Bay Shore and Jimmy’s Junkyard in Freeport. He also enlists the expertise from the nearby teaching institute, Autoseum in Mineola, for their bodywork specialty in order to get the Ranchero ready for the auto show.

Autoseum (www.autoseum.org) teaches the craftsmanship involved in the creation of some of the world’s most famous movie cars including the General Lee, Speed Racer, Black Beauty and the Batmobile. Check out the Autoseum’s special viewing event on Sunday, July 19, at 100 County Seat Dr. in Mineola from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In this week’s episode, “Pickup Showdown”, the duo takes on their first pickup truck project, a beat-up Chevy S10. Tune in to see how the team makes their difference in work styles and opinions work to their advantage.
