Three Artists Awarded For Work Representing Social Issues

T

he Art Guild’s most recent juried competition and artists’ reception, “JUSTICE,” included works that represented recent events including the death of George Floyd, organized demonstrations and Black Lives Matter, as well as entries representing everything from women’s rights to LBGTQ, prison reform, immigration and more.

“As an artist organization, we celebrate different points of view and encourage healthy dialogue” Lisa Grossman, executive director of The Art Guild, said. “During these times, it’s become increasingly difficult to talk about current events. It is said that art often says what words sometimes cannot. We were glad that JUSTICE provided a way to “speak out” and helped draw attention to different points of view about social issues, with a look within ourselves. We are happy to be a part of this important conversation.”

The drive for the flags was held over the summer, each flag cost $50.

Those who sponsored the cost of a flag have the option of keeping their flag, or donating it back to the club for future use after the memorial commences. This year, the Heroes club raised $2,000 between donations and people sponsoring flags for the 9/11 memorial. The money will be donated to the Port Washington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1819.

This past January, the club gave more than $4,000 to the Port Washington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1819 for their 2019 memorial fundraiser.

Several Port Washington businesses helped to contribute to the project, including Chief Graphix who donated the banner, Home Run Electric donated the lights for the flags, Annin Flag Company provided the flags at a very generous discount, as well as George Muhlbauer, the club’s moderator.

The past several months have taught us that we should not take anything for granted.

Fun, for example, went by the wayside when our physical health became threatened.

Psychologists and countless scientific studies have shown that engaging in activities perceived as fun relaxes us, gives us space to reflect, helps us learn and shows us how to promote our wellbeing. Humans need fun in order to release stress and these have undoubtedly been stressful times for everyone. With COVID-19 cases on the decline, people are beginning to wonder when they can resume recreational and social activities.

I know I have been thinking about it incessantly for the last few weeks. We can all agree that we need fun back. I say this in the sense that “fun” refers to an activity that you may enjoy.

This does not necessarily refer

to activities that people would have described as fun before COVID-19, for example, going back to school.

I want to pass by people in the hallway and fist bump my friends without the danger of possibly getting sick. I want to sit in a classroom and listen to a teacher give a lecture but be able to understand them because they are not wearing a mask. I want to eat lunch with a big group of people, fitting the usual 12 people at a table for eight.

I want to walk into the theater and have the attendant scoop popcorn into a bucket for me to enjoy. I want to find a seat without worrying about wiping it down and using hand sanitizer immediately. I want to hear the laughs and cries of the oh so many people that have been stuck in their houses for the better half of a year. I want

to walk out of the theater as the credits roll in a big crowd, funneling through the doors.

I want to go to a ball game with my brother and grandpa and stand on line with every fan getting food before the game starts and we need to find our seats. I want to high-five the guy sitting behind me when the Yankees score a run. I want to try on a ball cap in the team store without wiping it down and sanitizing everything I touch before I leave. I want to walk out of Yankee Stadium under the big arches with the crowd of fans cheering as we listen to “New York, New York”

I want to sit on the train next to complete strangers and step off into the sea of people that seem to never leave Penn Station. I want to explore the streets of New York City, enjoy

News the street performers and stop at a food cart. I want to go to a nice restaurant and have a conversation with the people seated next to me. I want to go to a concert and let myself fade into the crowd as we jump and sing along to the music that we all share a taste for.

I want to visit a college campus and observe the students, only a few years older than me, living the life that I may choose to pursue. I want to see the lecture halls, dorms and sports stadiums, that may be the focus of the stories I tell as an adult. I want to experience college life in person, and not on a screen.

I want to feel less an individual, protecting myself from the dangers of a virus and more a part of humanity, working, playing and experiencing life in person. The last six months have taught us separation: social distancing, quarantine,

Democrats and Republicans, blacks and whites. This is not how humans should be. This is not how a country should feel. I, and many others like me and different from me, want to enjoy ourselves again. Fun’s six-month hiatus must end and allow people to begin to live their lives again.

MANORHAVEN HAS NEVER LOOKED BETTER My husband and I have lived in the Village of Manorhaven for almost 60 years. We raised our three children here and wouldn’t want to live anywhere other than our beautiful village by Manhasset Bay. In all the years we’ve lived here, I’ve never seen it cleaner or better

maintained than over the past four years that Jim Avena has been our mayor.

Not only are our streets and sidewalks cleaner, but the worst roads are finally being repaved, sidewalks and curbs are repaired and the sewer system is no longer being

neglected.

Also, we waited for so many years for Morgan’s Dock to be finished and Mayor Avena got it done and it looks gorgeous.

The Nature Preserve used to be a parking lot with a gazebo.

Now there are lovely trails along the shoreline, a great

WINTER PARKING NO LONGER A NIGHTMARE THANKS TO AVENA For all of the 55 years I’ve lived in Manorhaven, winter has been so dreaded and not just because of the cold weather. From Dec. 1 to March 31, we had to park on alternate sides of the street just in case it snowed.

Even without alternate side parking, there aren’t enough spaces for all the cars in the

village. We would come home from work at night to find no spaces anywhere near our homes, having to park more than a block away and walk in the cold and dark to get home. Sometimes we wouldn’t go out for fear our spot wouldn’t be there when we returned.

When Jim Avena was

elected as a trustee in 2015, he suggested an alternate side of the street parking plan only during snow emergencies. The Fire Department wouldn’t allow it because snow removal was so awful then. As soon as Avena became mayor the following year, he turned around snow removal performance

to where it was one of the best in Port Washington. He also reduced the length of alternate side regulations by a full month since it almost never snowed in early December and late March. In 2017, alternate side parking was abolished other than during snow emergencies and it has worked perfectly. The

village staff is able to remove the snow and residents are abiding by the rules.

Such a simple change has improved the quality of life in our village so much thanks to Mayor Jim Avena. I hope you’ll join me in voting to re-elect him and his trustee candidates on Sept. 15.

dozens of new trees and plantings and Dog Park is a place I have fostered so many friendships. My dogs and I have doggy play dates with residents in Manorhaven and I have grown so much closer to the people in this community because of these spaces. That is all because of Mayor Avena’s leadership.

There is no administration

that is perfect. But Avena has my support and vote because he is always willing to listen even to a seemingly outlandish idea about turning a bunch of weeds into a community garden. I believe he will continue to listen to the people of Manorhaven and foster an even greater sense of community if re-elected as our mayor.

WHY MAYOR AVENA HAS MY VOTE I got to know Jim Avena through volunteering for the Growing Love Community Garden. This once unused land was transformed by a group of women whose mission was simple: to connect our diverse community to healthy food, nature and each other. I believe this mission has been achieved and it wouldn’t have been possible without him.

I bring up the garden because for the 20 years I have lived in Manorhaven, we have never had something so unifying in our community.

The garden is a place for people who might not have backyards to grow vegetables and flowers, to enjoy books and the peaceful quiet and for children to explore and play in nature.

Port Jewish Center Celebrates 50 Years

hat started out as a small group of families wanting to create a religious community for generations to come has developed, nearly 50 years later, into a tightknit congregation of more than 100 families. The Port Jewish Center (PJC), a reform synagogue affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism, is coming up on their 50 year anniversary this year. “Somehow we’ve not only been able to keep our doors open but really thrive for five decades, which is really extraordinary,� Rabbi Alysa Mendelson said.

The PJC has a bit of a unique history, having had only women rabbi’s since PJC’s inception. “They’ve only had women rabbis here, not by design but just by coincidence,� Mendelson said. “The entire history of our synagogue, the rabbi’s have been women. So all the children who have grown up here have had

Jewish women as their professional role models. I think that really reflects what an exceptional community this is.�

Members of the PJC are heavily

involved in giving back to the community, often finding opportunities to volunteer within the Port Washington area. They provide ministry support to Our Lady of Fatima’s food pantry

several times a year, holding several food drives where the proceeds help out Port Washington families in need.

Several members of the congregation are also active on various boards and clubs within the community. “The Port Jewish Center is a collection of families who want to be part of a place that feels like home and feels like family,� Mendelson said. “There is a tremendous diversity in our membership, we have a lot of interfaith families and our goal is to make Judaism feel like a sensory experience, something you feel with all of your senses.�

When the pandemic hit Long Island severely earlier this year, the tight-knit community rallied around one another to make sure each of the congregants had what they needed during the pandemic. “In the early days it was just making sure our older homebound congregants had access to the

PORT JEWISH CENTER from page 6 basics, making sure they knew about InstaCart, just making sure they understood how to use the technology, things like Zoom so they could be connected,� Mendelson said. “Our number one goal during the pandemic was to make sure that everyone had the support and the resources that they needed. We’ve upped our game in terms of our opportunities for learning, for being social, our shabbat services. People have been showing up to our Shabbat services on Zoom in much higher numbers than they typically would come on a regular Friday night. We have a lot of people who just stay on after our services just to connect with one another. It’s all about connecting and making sure people feel connected and that they know that they are not alone, and to continue to create Jewish memories for people.�

Although the pandemic put a lot of the events that were planned for the 50 year celebration on hold as large gatherings are not permitted at this time, the PJC still plans to continue their celebration, holding some of their larger events at a later time. “I have said that our Jubilee year will last until we can properly celebrate it,� Mendelson said. “God willing it will be sooner rather than

later. We are planning to have a gala, and we know how to have a good time, so it will be fun when we are able to get together and have a party.

We are also planning on doing a Torah march, where we march from the United Methodist Church to the PJC [an old tradition they are hoping to recreate] but we are waiting until it’s safe to do that. Our rabbi’s have also come back on Shabbat to

give sermons and talk about their experiences.�

One project will still be taking place despite the pandemic is their oral history project. Young families in the PJC community will be interviewing older families in the congregation to create an oral history of their memories, traditions and to establish a relationship with one another within the synagogue.

“Our hope that in sharing some of their memories of the Synagogue, they might inspire some of the young families to create new ones here too,�

he Art Guild’s most recent juried competition and artists’ reception, “JUSTICE,” included works that represented recent events including the death of George Floyd, organized demonstrations and Black Lives Matter, as well as entries representing everything from women’s rights to LBGTQ, prison reform, immigration and more.

he COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way in which people have been permitted to assemble for a host of services, ceremonies, activities and events.

While some governments have decided to scale back their September 11th ceremonies in the face of the coronavirus, the Nassau County government, and the towns of Hempstead and Oyster Bay, along with hamlets and villages, are moving ahead with programs to honor our fallen heroes.

Carle Place

The Carle Place American Legion Post 1718 will hold a service on Friday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Carle Place Veterans Memorial Park. The park is located at the corner of Westbury Avenue and Carle Road. This is the 19th anniversary of the attack on our country. Organizers ask that attendees wear masks and practice social distancing.

East Williston

The Village of East Williston will be having its 9/11 Memorial ceremony at 7 p.m. at the Village Green on Friday, Sept. 11.

Farmingdale

Synagogues Prepare For Unusual High Holy Day Season

he High Holy Days are rapidly approaching. The sound of the shofar—a ram’s horn—will return once again. However, the long, still sound might be a tad different.

The echo created by the shofar might last even longer this year.

That’s because synagogues across Long Island will have fewer people in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The High Holy Days begin with Rosh Hashanah at sunset on Friday, Sept. 18, and the clock is ticking.

Some synagogues are imposing a specific limit to the number of people who can attend the services this year, while others are streaming services on Zoom and even hosting multiple of the same services throughout the High Holy Day season.

“Challenges, challenges,” Rabbi Perry Raphael Rank from the Midway Jewish Center said. “There will be many.”

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said in June that houses of worship could only open at 25 percent capacity. That’s a major issue for small Jewish congregations, which need a quorum of 10 people to conduct a complete service.

U.S. District Court Judge Gary Sharpe in late June said the state cannot impose a lower capacity limit for houses for worship compared to other places.

“We need to create a sense of community while people are seated 10 feet apart,” Rabbi Rank said. “We need to create the warmth and joy that lies at the heart of our community while reminding people not to shake hands, hug or kiss. We need to honor people while suspending almost 95 percent of all honors typically distributed as we do not want people touching the Torah or the Ark.” Rabbi Anchelle Perl from Congregation Beth Sholom Chabad in Mineola is doing things much differently. It’s a time for his congregation to get creative.

The Chabad in Mineola will have a pair of Shabbat morning services on Rosh Hashanah, with one service from 7 to 11 a.m. and the other from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Both services will include a sermon, with the latter

serving as a “highlighted service.”

Likewise will be the case on Yom Kippur, which begins on Sunday, Sept.

“I want people to do exactly what they are comfortable doing,” Rabbi Rank said. “I will not persuade someone to attend services nor encourage them to stay home, unless I feel they really should not be at services.

Wherever they choose to be, is a personal decision and I’m okay with that.

My job is to be sure that wherever they are, they are able to welcome in the New Year with the self-reflection this time of year demands and with the blessings they and their family deserve.”

All congregations in the area are mandating masks and observing social distancing practices. However, the idea of limiting the number of people to a service is essentially unheard of.

Wantagh will offer multiple services, each being shorter than usual, essentially staggering them. In between each service, sanitizing will take place.

The congregation will also live stream each service for people who cannot physically attend.

It’s yet another challenge for synagogues. Due to the rise in anti-Semitism, Cuomo mandated an increased amount of security at the houses of worship in 2019. That security will likely continue in 2020, with anti-Semitic incidents still on the rise.

Through the first five months of the year, anti-Semitic incidents reached a 40-year high in New York State.

Throughout the pandemic, synagogues have faced many halachic— Jewish law—questions that they might have never dealt with. Among them is the idea of live streaming services for more observant congregations.

Reform congregations have streamed services for several years, but it is forbidden in conservative and orthodox synagogues due to Judaism’s stance of not using electronic devices on Shabbat and holy days. Since this is a scenario that is

unheard, compromises have to be made. Rabbinic authorities have been more lenient with this rule because of the capacity limit the governor is mandating, as well as the fact that it is recommended that elderly congregants do not attend services.

“Since June 6, we have conducted services in the sanctuary and have also begun to stream those services,” Rabbi Rank said. “The decision to stream was not made lightly as we recognized that it would be compromising some aspects of Jewish law. But in the end, it was an ethical decision we needed to make, in as much as we were actively discouraging certain people from attending. So the question became, for us, how do we on the one hand discourage our membership from attending while not providing some alternative in the meantime. And, at that point, it was important for us to stream the services and that’s what we have been doing.”

Roslyn Restaurant Owners Fight for Survival

hen the coronavirus hit in mid-March, Alex Sieligowski knew that he would have to implement tremendous changes in order to keep Gino’s Parlor of Roslyn afloat. The stakes were high—he and his wife were expecting their second child by the end of the month, his wife was going to be out of work, and now, Sieligowski feared that he was going to lose Gino’s, his first-ever business. Like every other local restaurant owner during this time, Sieligowski faced a grueling question: would it be possible for the business to survive—let alone thrive—in a COVID-19 world?

For Sieligowski and so many other Roslyn restaurant owners, survival has proven nearly insurmountable.

Requiring creativity, strength and grit, these business owners have needed to completely reinvent the commercial dining experience. And the journey is still ongoing—marked by constant challenge and uncertainty, but also by an unwavering desire to tackle whatever lies ahead.

When the pandemic struck, the unprecedented demand for cleanliness and safety evoked a variety of responses from restaurant owners. Jimmy Zanfardino, owner of Delicacies Gourmet of Roslyn, sent away for disposable temperature strips in the middle of March. Boxes of test strips that used to be sold at $30 were now being sold for upwards of $100—a cost that Zanfardino decided to absorb out-of-pocket in order to ensure that he could check his employees’ temperatures before they came into work each morning.

Meanwhile, Sieligowski decided not to let customers into Gino’s at all when the pandemic first hit—instead, he set up a designated take-out station designed exclusively for virtually contact-less exchanges.

“I knew that in order to make things work, I had to make Gino’s the safest place for customers to get food from and for my employees to work at,” Sieligowski said.

Another crucial question was whether the demand for restaurant services would even continue to exist in this new landscape. This concern rung loudly at Roslyn’s YOLO Yogurt Shop & Desserteria, which had thrived as a self-serve facility since day one.

Frank Briggs and his business partners now faced a challenge: could they continue to satisfy their customers in coronavirus times, when the self-serve model has become unworkable?

Ultimately, they had to change their business model entirely, closing their lobby and began taking all orders from an outdoor order window when the pandemic began.

“There was no grace period,” Briggs said. “The Roslyn clients expect what they want when they want it, without exception. We have been blessed to remain open from the start.”

Not all local restaurants, though, were able to successfully adapt to the new demands created by the pandemic.

Back in March, following several weeks of slow business and few prospects for improvement, Lou Tiglias decided to shut down Roslyn’s Landmark Diner.

While Tiglias was ultimately able to return to work in late June, it took until early August for the diner to reach even one-third of its usual business capacity.

With customers still reluctant to come in, Tiglias continues to fear for the diner’s survival.

“Every week it’s getting a little bit better,” Tiglias said. “But if we don’t reach at least 50 or 60 percent capacity, we’re probably going to have to shut down again.”

Eagle Scout Beautifies Corpus Christi Church

y Eagle Scout project is “In Honor of Those that have Served” and is to beautify the Corpus Christi Religious Education, CYO and Youth Center.

On Sunday, Aug. 23 Father Malcolm blessed my Eagle Scout project: two trees, a rose bush and flowering plants, installing handrails at the main and west entrance, concrete work at the main entrance, painting an interior wall and installing a new banner and sign.

The trees are planted in honor of our men and women who sacrifice their lives for us every day and in memory of fallen first responders. A rose bush was planted in memory of Sr. Therese Ezelius, who served Corpus Christi Parish for many years.

The beautification encompassed months of work. In March, shrubs and a stump were removed to prepare for planting trees. The current sign and posts were removed. We placed new sign posts with concrete and an interior wall was scraped and painted. With the help of my grandfather, Alexandre DaSilva Sr., we were able to fix the brick wall and point the concrete at the main entrance. Earlier in the month, a handrail was installed at each entrance

My grandfather, Alex DaSilva Sr. and I attached the plaques to the large river rocks for each tree and for the plaque to dedicate my Eagle Scout project. NYU Winthrop Earns First LGBTQ Health Care Equality Leader Designation NYU Winthrop Hospital, part of NYU Langone Health, recently announced that it has been awarded the LGBTQ Health Care Equality Leader designation from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRC). HRC is the education arm of America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people. To be awarded the designation, healthcare facilities must concretely demonstrate initiatives that go far beyond the basics when it comes to adopting policies and practices in LGBTQ care.

“We have a dedication to creating and providing high quality, culturally competent, inclusive healthcare to all our patients, visitors and employees,” Valerie Terzano, vice president for Nursing and Patient Care Services at NYU Winthrop Hospital, said. “By reducing barriers to quality care, we ensure that our patients and their families feel welcome, safe and valued at NYU Winthrop Hospital.”

NYU Winthrop Hospital’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee is continually seeking enhancements to patient care. Hospital neuropsychologist Carole Filangieri, PhD, who co-chairs the committee along with Valerie Terzano, said that upcoming initiatives include lunch-and-learns on LGBTQ+ care, which will be open to all hospital staff.

Additionally, NYU Long Island School of Medicine is developing a two-week elective focusing on LGBTQ+ patient care across the lifespan. That elective will be for third-year medical students in order to train culturally competent, inclusive primary care physicians.

Every year, HRC recognizes healthcare facilities for their dedication and commitment to LGBTQ inclusion with evaluations based on participation in the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). Troop 298 Scouting Spirit Soars Despite COVID Challenges to our new COVID protocols, the troop recently joined the village and Nassau County in the BlueRibbon Campaign to show their support for our brave men and women in our police department that serve and protect us 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The troop social distanced themselves, wore face masks and tied more than 60 blue ribbons up and down Jericho Turnpike in the Village of New Hyde Park.

Recently, the troop continued their support for the community.

Life Scout Ian Garvin, for his Eagle Project, refurbished the village community lot on Jericho Turnpike. For his project, Garvin and the troop removed debris, trimmed up vegetation, removed dead vegetation, and re-striped the parking lot.

They also planted a tree in memory of Eagle Scout Zachery Zabatta, who was tragically killed

in a car accident last October. The troop completed the parking lot in two days, following and adapting to ever changing COVID protocols.

They also accomplished this in the midst of a heat wave. Trustee Richard Pallisco, who was the village primary point of contact, noted that he couldn’t be happier with the outcome of the project.

It’s this kind of interaction that Singh feels is the key towards battling underage drinking, particularly given the fact that 55 percent of Massapequa youth (grades 7-12) report drinking in “someone else’s home.” In addition, the age of onset (the time when youth start drinking) is around 13, which is slightly above the national average of 11.1, according to MTAC .

“One of my primary roles is really engaging the youth because they have such an important voice and know what’s going on in the community, sometimes more than the adults do because they’re in it,” the Baldwin native admitted. “The grant that I work under is really focused on that.”

Singh’s pathway to MTAC came via a two-year internship she embarked on with the YES Community Counseling Center in Massapequa while working on her case app training to become a substance abuse counselor. After earning a bachelor’s degree in

“I knew I wanted to do social work to make a difference and I always wanted to work with youth, because I feel that they are our future,” she said. “I chose addiction as my specialty because more and more I noticed that addiction impacts everyone.

Not just the person who is addicted, but also their family and friends, not to mention the community. The community piece of it was what locked me into prevention work. From working on the treatment and with youth who are affected by addiction, I’ve noticed that I’ve been seeing a decrease in the age of onset. The prevention work is so important to target a younger age and that really got me into prevention. When this became available in Massapequa, I was very grateful to be brought in as a partner in this.”

For Mark Wenzel, the YES Community Counseling assistant director who is also a licensed master social worker, Singh has proved to be a valuable addition to MTAC. “[Larissa] was a star as an intern,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of staff that comes through our internship program, which has become our breeding ground for cultivating social workers that come in with the right talents, affinity and skills in addition to displaying the right commitment to

both the agency and clients. Larissa shows tremendous potential. She’s got the perfect affect in terms of reaching out. This is going to sound stereotypical, but I’m a person in my sixties and to have someone younger who can relate to younger people makes a huge difference for us. All those things together and who she is, the way she has approached both the agency via her internship and now as a staff person reflects her tremendous potential [to make a difference].”

Grants that have encouraged MTAC to work with local businesses and the community have made a major impact starting with the Partnership For Success (PFS) initiative MTAC received money for back in 2014. It addresses prescription drug and opioid misuse.

The organization’s efforts included developing marketing campaigns to provide residents with tips to secure, monitor and dispose of unnecessary medications, helping healthcare providers and patients determine when and how opioids should be prescribed

for chronic pain and the training (with help from the YES Community Counseling Center) of more than 800 residents to administer naloxone which reverses an opioid/heroin overdose.

According to the Nassau County Police Department, the efforts have contributed to a 35 percent reduction in nonfatal opioid overdoses, among other positive results. It’s all part of a long-range approach Singh is thrilled to be part of.

“Long-term goals include being able to make progress in seeing that age of first-use increasing and also working to decrease access,” she said. “And also changing the conversation around substance abuse because we’ve seen such great progress that we need to continue.”

Drucker Commemorates 75 Years Since World War II’s End N

assau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D—Plainview) commemorated the 75th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II at the Museum of American Armor in Old Bethpage during ceremonies held on Saturday, Aug. 29 to mark the historic milestone. The ceremony, which featured historic armaments and the presence of World War II veterans, was held just prior to the 75th anniversary of Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day). Formal surrender documents that ended World War II were signed aboard the USS Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945.

“Seventy-five years ago, freedom prevailed over tyranny, and the indomitable American spirit conquered oppression and evil—decisively, as one united force,” Drucker said. “The fight to protect and preserve our freedom bears a price. The incredibly brave men and women that so many refer to as the ‘Greatest Generation’ sacrificed their lives to protect our freedom from threats emerging from every corner of the globe. We must never forget those Americans, who with their lives, cleared the path that the next generation and the generations after that will walk and follow.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR TOWN MUST REMOVE ROADBLOCKS FOR HOMELESS FAMILIES The Jericho Family Support Center is a laudable concept that deserves our support.

The plan involves conversion of the former Hampton Inn on Jericho Turnpike into a transitional housing facility equipped to provide approximately 80 families with case management, childcare, workforce readiness training, health referrals and 24-7 security.

Currently, there are approximately 50 families living in inhumane squalor at dilapidated motels in Jericho.

They are homeless during a global pandemic, at a time when our neighbors have lost their jobs and incomes at a level not seen since the Great Depression.

Despite the clear merits of the plan presented by service provider Community Housing Innovations (CHI) and their nearly 30-year track record of success in this field, Oyster Bay Town officials have nevertheless obstructed this project. They have embarked upon a politically motivated campaign notable for its embrace of fear-mongering, misinformation, shameless self-promotion and wasteful lawsuits—all bankrolled by you, the taxpayer.

It is the height of callous, heartless hypocrisy.

Town of Oyster Bay officials who recently sent self-congratulatory, glossy, full-color mailers to Jericho residents to announce that they “fully enforce local zoning laws… to protect your suburban way of life” have no right to take such a disingenuous victory lap. They are the same people who have consistently failed to apply town code and its enforcement mechanisms to compel the owners of these squalid motels to clean up their act. In fact, CHI’s facility is likely to do more to ameliorate any level of perceived blight than Oyster Bay Town officials have in many years.

Eligible families residing in those motels or elsewhere in the county would be relocated to the Jericho Family Support Center, where they would benefit from individualized case management with defined goals in support of their return to independent housing.

Children would have access to recreational and enrichment programs, academic assistance and transportation to Jericho schools or their home districts. Of the 80 families who have interviewed for the Jericho Family Support Center, only 19 children thus far have expressed interest in attending the 3,000-student Jericho School District.

The leap from economic stability to instability is no longer so unimaginable. As compared to July of last year, the Nassau/Suffolk unemployment rate has increased by 10 percent, rendering an additional 135,000 residents without work. Amid the pandemic, Nassau County has been asked to consider a proposal to lay off 2,900 hard-working men and women. Food insecurity has tripled as rent and mortgage assistance programs have ended.

The face of homelessness has changed and the next family who becomes homeless could look just like mine or yours.

To the individuals choosing to engage in hurtful, divisive rhetoric that, by its design, fuels the stigma that keeps struggling people in the shadows of our society, I pray that no one you love will ever be in need of the services CHI is seeking to provide. Just like you and I, these homeless families have been endowed by their Creator with the basic, inalienable human rights of dignity and respect. Their government has a constitutional and moral obligation to aid them.

Not only is this endeavor the right thing to do, it is the epitome of fiscally responsible governing. By investing in

the long-term wellness of at-risk populations, we affirm their humanity and reduce the burden on social service safety nets by empowering these individuals to once again become self-supporting, independent and productive citizens.

I understand why residents are angry about the process, and I have expressed my frustration directly to Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and to CHI. However, I cannot allow my displeasure with a flawed process to prevent me from supporting a proposal that I know will provide potentially life-saving resources for families in need.

In 2016, I made the decision to run for the Nassau County Legislature to succeed the late Judy Jacobs, a woman of the highest integrity and conviction. I ran because I wanted to help people. My desire to help people is the reason I became an attorney, and it is the reason my wife and I made the conscious decision to teach our children these same values.

At a time marked by such great suffering and hardship, I refuse to forsake my humanity for the sake of political expedience.

Do You Have Stress Brought On By The Pandemic?

If so, here is a step-by-step process to help you get back on track

ver feel that stress is too much to bear? Has the pandemic made you feel even worse than you did before? Well, you are not alone.

According to The American Psychological Association’s Stress in America report, U.S. adults have experienced an average stress level of 5.9 out of 10, due to the pandemic. In the survey, U.S. adults experienced a general stress rate of 5.4, compared to the 2019 Stress in America survey, which found U.S. adults experiencing a general stress rate of 4.9.

Theresa Rauh-Hoell, who is a certified expert in the field of stress management, said the first step in stress management is to recognize that you may have symptoms of stress.

“It’s just a matter of recognizing when our anxiety is within a normal range or when maybe certain circumstances trigger our anxiety to maybe overreact and we have to manage that,” she said. “There’s a part of it that comes from within; you have to know yourself. If you don’t know yourself and you’re just feeling overwhelmed by it that’s when I would say that maybe going to therapy [is good], so you can have a better understanding of your process and your experience with anxiety so that you can manage it.”

The American Psychological Association’s Stress in America report cited 67 percent of parents are stressed due to self-isolating. RauhHoell said people should stray away from being alone during this time as it can lead to an increase in stress.

“I feel like what COVID-19 did, is brought on a lot of isolation,” she said. “Human beings are social. We need people. We need to be around people. Even when we hate them and wish we were in a lake house alone somewhere, we need people. This isolation and not seeing other people or only the people in our household is not good for us. With technology right now, we have so many more options available to us to be somewhat social.

Staying healthy is another step that people can do, even at home, to help manage their stress. Rauh-Hoell said exercise and nutrition are keys to living a life that is less stressful.

“Everybody can exercise at home right now,” she said. “Nobody wants to admit it, but you can. We can all do push-ups and crunches. Take walks safely with a mask, so there are things. Yoga’s great. If you’re drinking Starbucks all day, you’re going to be gyrating and anxious about everything. Also, chocolate and sugars are going to mess you up. Monster drinks too. All that is awful. We have to be aware of what we are putting into our bodies.”

Rauh-Hoell said recreational activities are becoming popular as the pandemic has limited activities that can be done outside the home.

“More and more people are telling me that they are doing puzzles, having game nights with their families and actually having conversations instead of plopping on a couch and zoning out, which is what people were doing before COVID-19,” she said. “I see more and more people outside playing and on bikes and walks than I have seen in years.”

The American Psychological Association’s Stress in America report cited parental stress for those with children under the age of 18 is 6.7.

The report also said that 55 percent of parents feel that their child has been acting out since the pandemic.

Rauh-Hoell said it’s important for parents to know the stress signs in their children.

“Usually a kid that’s stressed out is going to tell you that their belly hurts more often than not,” she said. “They don’t even understand what stress is.

As a parent, you have to know your child and you have to recognize that too. Maybe it isn’t that they ate too much or are hungry and that’s what’s bothering them. If they keep reporting that their stomach is bothering them, it’s probably anxiety and stress.

They feed off of the adults too. As an adult and as a parent, it’s airplane rules. You have to put the mask on yourself first and then you can help the kids around you. If you’re not in the physically and mentally healthiest place, you’re not going to be able to help anyone else. I think parents should model the behavior of how to take care of yourself because it is a stressful time.”

Breathing is one technique that Rauh-Hoell recommends everyone

can do to manage their stressors. She said stress is both a physical condition as much as it is a mental one.

“There’s this natural tendency to tighten up,” she explained. “Our shoulders just go right to our ears.

That’s why stress causes so many physical issues, muscle spasms, tension in our neck, upper back and our lower back. It manifests physically if we don’t get a hold of it mentally.

Take nice, deep breaths. You can do that anywhere. Doing that for a few minutes is very helpful.”

For those who have not addressed their stress concerns to a professional, Rauh-Hoell gave some advice.

“Just like anything else, the unknown is scary to anybody,” she said. “It’s something new. It’s okay not wanting to do it and not being 100 percent comfortable. That’s also part of life. We have to go to a doctor, we have to take care of ourselves, eat well, we have to exercise, we have to do things to keep us healthy and that sometimes isn’t fun. Anything that we’ve not done before would be scary.

That’s normal. It’s okay to be scared.

That’s when you grow the most.”

show up on a food label. In terms of replacements, now we are going to talk about products versus those individual sweeteners. You always want to compare labels. You want to look at both the added sugars, which is now a lot easier to detect on a food label, because they state it. You also want to see ingredients because you know the nutrition facts panel, looking at the added sugars, looking at serving size, that’s only giving you a piece of the picture. You don’t know the quality of the food if you’re not looking at the ingredients. In terms of the swaps, I would suggest something fizzy like a Spindrift with a splash of juice. It is a bubbly seltzer, carbonated water. It comes in flavors like blackberry, raspberry and lemon. These contain no added sugars; they contain a splash of 100 percent fruit juice so it’s giving you that bubbly sweet flavor, but in a much healthier way. If you’re consuming sweetened cereal, there’s a couple things that I would suggest. One is that you can mix it with an unsweetened cereal to cut the sugar starting with whatever mix or ratio is tolerable to you and then, gradually reducing that down till you’re about 25 percent or less of the sweetened variety and 75 percent or more of the unsweetened, whole-grain, healthy variety or less sweetened variety.

Abnormal Liver Tests Explained

T

Medication and the liver

he most common reason for abnormal liver tests in the United States are fatty liver and medication induced liver injury.

People with underlying liver diseases may be at greater risk of this but many times, abnormal liver tests can occur in people without any known liver conditions.

Potential medication effects on the liver are a constant concern for both patients and providers. No one wants to take or prescribe something that could potentially do harm. Almost all medications have a warning associated with them that tell the patient to inform the doctor if they have any liver disease. A careful read of most medication package inserts will list liver test abnormalities as a possible side effect.

What then is a practical approach to medications and the liver?

First and foremost, the vast majority of medications do not cause liver issues and are safe. 99 percent of the

abnormal tests which are seen, are not clinically significant and resolve when the offending agent is discontinued.

Second, all medications, over-thecounter products and herbal products should only be taken when absolutely needed.

Third, it is important for prescribing doctors to be aware of all medications and over the counter products to ensure appropriate consideration is given to potential drug-drug interactions.

Fourth, patients must be aware of drug interactions when they take multiple over the counter and herbal medications without their doctor’s supervision.

Which common drugs come to mind when providers and patients become concerned about liver toxicity?

These concerns can usually be divided into three main classes or medications: prescription drugs, overthe-counter medications and herbal and natural products.

Many prescription medications can cause mild liver test abnormalities.

Some of these toxicities are dose dependent and many are idiosyncratic or unpredictable. Antibiotics are the most common class of drugs to cause abnormal liver tests. Rarely, certain antibiotics can cause chronic liver disease. Cholesterol lowering agents, such as statins, rarely cause significant abnormal liver tests. Usually, abnormal liver tests are found during the initial six months of therapy with a new drug. If liver tests are found to be elevated after more than six months of therapy, it is likely that something else is the cause.

Over-the-counter products commonly cause short-term liver test abnormalities and liver injury.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as indomethacin or naproxen and other anti-inflammatory agents such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) can cause abnormal liver tests and even jaundice if too many pills are taken or if pills are taken with alcohol. If taken in very large quantities, acetaminophen can lead to liver failure. Over-the-counter medications should only be taken for a few days

for symptomatic relief. If symptoms are not relieved, appropriate medical consultation should be obtained.

Over-the–counter medications that can cause liver injury are commonly found in many cold remedies, as well as fever and flu preparations. People should read the labels to learn what they are taking in order to avoid overdose and duplication of treatment and prevent toxicity.

The last major class of ingested agents are complementary or alternative therapies such as herbal products, vitamins, or minerals. While the vast majority of these products are safe, many still can cause liver damage. Technically, these products are classified as foods not medications. So, they are not subjected to the same standard of safety testing required of prescription medications.

A simple rule of thumb should apply to the use of these products. Take them only as needed, avoid taking multiple products as these products may interfere or enhance absorption of prescribed medications and make sure to read the labels carefully so as not to take any known liver toxic agents.

So, what are the most important take home messages regarding medications and the liver?

First, 99 percent of therapies are liver safe. Second, know what you are taking, and if you have any questions, ask your doctor. Thirdly, only take what you absolutely need.

My Wife, The Census Taker In case you hadn’t noticed, your neighborhood is being canvassed by strangers approaching your door.

They aren’t selling anything, asking you to sign a petition, or trying to convince you to consider a different religion.

They aren’t even stopping at every house on your block.

As that person makes their way up to your driveway, don’t hide the pets and children.

Don’t make-believe you’re not home by turning off the lights and shushing everyone to be quiet. They are not there to hurt or harm you. They are just there to count you.

With the 2020 Census scheduled to conclude at the end of September, a lot of people still haven’t been counted.

You know, you could have avoided all of this by just filling out the census form they sent you earlier in the year. But no, you had to get on Uncle Sam’s “naughty” list by ignoring (or refusing) to be counted. Now, the government is sending people to ring your doorbell and find out how many people live in your house.

Of course, many of you might have dutifully completed your census online or

mailed it back months ago.

However, if it wasn’t correctly registered and counted, your address might come up on the “naughty” list. But don’t worry, all your presidential mail-in ballots will be counted accurately in November, right?

Please understand that these Census takers have a job to do, so be gentle with them.

Besides, one of them you encounter might be my wife.

After a complete vetting process and almost 20 hours of training, my wife ventured out for the first time recently to begin the quest of counting heads that haven’t yet been counted. What she found is quite eye-opening.

A number of you aren’t interested in cooperating.

Don’t get me wrong, many of the people are understanding and polite. Sometimes they will take the time to answer the few basic questions. Other times, they politely decline.

The questions are relatively simple and innocuous.

• How many people live in your house?

• What is their name, sex, age and relationship?

• What is their ethnicity (Hispanic or non-Hispanic) and race?

Want to know the best part?

You don’t have to answer any of them if you don’t want to, so there is no need to be rude.

If you are uncomfortable with talking to a certified Census taker because they are a stranger, ask them for the Census Identification number for your address. You can then do it yourself either online or via the telephone. If you aren’t home (or you are hiding and won’t answer the door), they will leave you a document with your Census Identification number on it.

Believe it or not, these census takers are doing you

a favor. For the next 10 years, billions (yes, billions) of federal dollars will be distributed based on these population tallies. Highway planning, commuting costs and school funds are all tied to the final 2020 Census figures. Where do you think some of the local funding for community programs, libraries and programs for elderly housing assistance comes from? Think of it as helping your community.

These census takers are not your enemy. There is no Big Brother conspiracy going on here. They are your friends and neighbors trying to do their civic duty and make some additional cash at the same time.

So please, take a few minutes and answer the questions. But more importantly, be kind to the Census taker when they approach your house. Besides, one of them might be my wife.

Research Books, Encyclopedias And Living A Thousand Lives It has been said that readers live a thousand lives before they die, while non-readers live only one. George RR Martin, author of the Game of Thrones books, has been credited with this very poignant quote. When one is immersed in a book, one gets to see life through the eyes of the protagonist. Good fiction has the power to whisk the reader to far-off lands. Reading is a peaceful, enjoyable experience for many folks. I’m one of them.

As a child, I always had my nose in books. My library at home was not vast, so my parents often took me to Levittown Public Library to take out books that appealed to me. In my younger years, Jean de Brunhoff’s Babar the Elephant took me on grand adventures. The cursive writing that lit up the pages especially appealed to my artistic side. As I grew older, I found myself drawn to the Little House series. I found

a spot in our upstairs den and curled up, eager to find out Laura Ingalls’ next great escapade. However, fictional stories were not the only books that held my rapt attention. A thin set of books, cataloged alphabetically, sat atop Dad’s handmade bookshelf in the hallway. My favorite books were a set of Golden Books Encyclopedias, which Mom had received in weekly installments from my grandmother, who purchased

them at Bohack each week with her groceries.

As I pored over the books, I learned that Iowa and Illinois produced the most corn in the United States. Each state boasted tiny symbols across their vastness, which stood for coal, manganese, cotton, oil and other natural resources.

Those books became my go-to for knowledge, and I often found myself hoping to memorize each book’s contents. I longed to become a human encyclopedia.

Dad also had a few TimeLife books, which were only about the size of a postcard.

One of them, entitled, The Sun was my very favorite. I took that book everywhere, and found myself on my belly in the backyard, soaking up the sun in both the sky and the book. I learned about “the midnight sun” in the Arctic and swore it would be on my “bucket list” of places to visit one day. When I was a freshman in college,

I realized that the Golden Book Encyclopedias would no longer fit the bill for adequate research. I learned about the Encyclopedia Brittanica and World Book Encyclopedia, with volumes so heavy that I feared lifting more than two at once.

Time and technology have marched on, which means that for many, encyclopedias have fallen out of use. It is much easier to look for information on one’s computer or cell phone, rather than to drag out a hernia-inducing volume from a local library. However, I’m still pretty old-school where it applies to research.

I enjoy the dusty fragrance of books from the library, and nothing makes me happier than a trip to the bookstore for that “new book smell”. I own a Kindle, but I only have a few books on it. I would much rather have the experience of feeling the pages between my fingers and smelling the faint aroma of print on paper.

That, my friends, is Heaven on

I may not be looking for the corn icon on the state of Iowa any longer, but I still enjoy a good research book from time to time. My husband and I recently cleared out some old books from our basement and found a pile of research books about weather patterns, birds of the Northeast, types of trees, and a Peterson’s Wildflower Guide. Veteran Affairs Senate Passes Defense Bill

The Senate passed S. 4049, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 (NDAA). This legislation includes a VFW-supported provision to add bladder cancer, hypothyroidism and Parkinson’s Disease to the list of presumptive conditions associated with exposure to Agent Orange. The scientific community concurs that sufficient evidence exist to link these three conditions. The VFW urges the House and Senate to keep this provision in the final version of the NDAA.

H.R. 6395, The William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 (NDAA). The House version of the NDAA includes a VFW-supported provision introduced by Representative Mike Thompson (D-CA) to transfer control of Mare Island Naval Cemetery from the city of Vallejo, CA, to the VA. North Shore Hebrew Academy Students Return To School North Shore Hebrew Academy High School (NSHAHS) enthusiastically opened its doors to the new school year on Sept. 9. Returning to school after six long months, students were delighted to reunite with friends and teachers and eager to take on new challenges and experiences.

Who would have thought just how much we would miss school? From the beginning of the pandemic and amidst much uncertainty, NSHAHS’ priority was to keep students and teachers safe and it acted accordingly.

NSHAHS seamlessly transitioned to remote learning, teachers helped with adjustments and students continued to learn in engaging classes despite our newfound situation.

The entire staff at NSHAHS has been working tirelessly for our safe return to school. Based on guidance from the New York State Department of Health, the CDC, and the school’s medical consultant, Dr. Sharon Nachman, NSHAHS developed health and safety protocols to provide a safe, secure and supportive environment for all. Some of the safety protocols include requiring students, faculty,

staff and visitors to wear masks at all times, conducting daily health screenings, and following the correct procedures for handling possible and confirmed COVID-19 exposures. For now, NSHAHS has implemented a hybrid model of instruction. Students have been divided into two groups, with one group attending virtual classes Mondays and Wednesdays, the other group attending Tuesdays and Thursdays, and with each group alternating Fridays. In-person learning will be conducted in a manner consistent with social distancing rules. Classrooms will be thoroughly cleaned each evening, with whole room cleaning devices specialized to

reach every corner and crevice.

Although this may sound overwhelming, I am sure everything will be second nature soon enough and the school year will be challenging and exciting. I would like to personally welcome our new freshman class; I have no doubt you will quickly navigate, adjust and love high school in no time.

I am excited to share the 2020-21

school year and its opportunities with you all. I know it will be a unique but fabulous year full of learning and growing. NEIGHBORS IN THE NEWS County Executive Laura Curran recently presented Orlence “Dan” Orvis of Garden City with a Nassau County Citation in celebration of his 100th birthday celebration and heroic bravery during his 30 years of service to the FDNY as a Battalion Chief. Orvis was joined by his family in the celebration, which included a parade conducted by the local fire department.

Curran honored Orvis for his legacy of service—first deferring his appointment to the FDNY to volunteer in the U.S. Navy during WWII, and then returning to serve the City of New York for 30 years in the FDNY during a period of tremendous crisis when fires were raging every day.

Orvis retired as a Battalion Chief in charge of the 44th Battalion in Brooklyn after a roof collapsed on him and paralyzed one side of his body during a rescue attempt. Thankfully, he fought back and would eventually recover.

Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth announced that the independent Wall Street bond rating agency Moody’s Investors Service has again assigned a Aaa rating to $9.2 million public improvement serial bonds.

Additionally, it assigned a MIG 1 rating to the town’s $15 million Bond Anticipation Notes—2020 Series C. Six Syosset South Woods Middle School students organized and ran their own pandemic friendly lemonade stand on Monday, in front of the Syosset Post Office on Queens Street.

They sold ice cold water, lemonade and unique Syosset branded masks in red and black. Their efforts are branded under the name “Lemon-aid” and run by them. All of the proceeds are going to Island Harvest and their efforts to help families in need across the island during the pandemic.

Julia Elmoraly, a Syosset resident entering the seventh grade at South Woods Middle School this school year, was pioneering the efforts. “It has kind of been like a childhood dream to run a lemonade stand or yard sale,” Elmoraly said. “It felt good to be able to give someone a lemonade or water on a hot day and have the money go towards a good cause.”

Other participants were Penelope Smith, Saisha Puri, Madison Shum, Tiffany Wong, Riley Shafritz, and Julia’s siblings, Ryan Elmoraly and Noah Elmoraly.

The donations will go toward Island Harvest’s COVID-19 response and recovery program. Since the outbreak began, Island Harvest help put food on the table for the most vulnerable neighbors.

Westbury Man Arrested For Forcible Touching

The Second Squad reports the arrest of a Westbury man for forcible touching that occurred between Aug. 16, 2018 and Nov. 19, 2019 in Bethpage.

According to detectives, defendant Edwing Geovany Perez-Bonilla, 36, inappropriately grabbed and forcibly touched a female juvenile, 14, at her place of employment located at 445 Central Ave. Officers located the defendant and he was arrested without incident on Aug. 28 at 2:30 p.m.

Perez-Bonilla is charged with

endangering the welfare of a child and forcible touching. He was arraigned on Aug. 29 in Mineola.

The victim became suspicious and called police to file a report when she realized the phone call she received was a scam.

Fire In Sea Cliff

The Nassau County Police Department reports the details of a fire that occurred on Aug. 30 at 5:34 p.m. in Sea Cliff.

According to police, units responded to a radio assignment for a fire at Pride Gas Station located at 311 Glen Cove Ave. Upon arrival, officers observed a working fire. Sea Cliff and Glenwood fire departments responded to extinguish the fire. A 24-year old male suffered injuries as a result and was transported

by Nassau County Police Aviation to a local hospital for treatment. The investigation is ongoing. There appears to be no criminality at this time.

Bringing Bigfoot To The Masses Man versus nature at center of new Max Brooks novel

Bigfoot. Say the name and the reaction you get will range from outright derision with the word hoax being liberally thrown around to people who honestly believe there is a bipedal ape-like creature roaming the North American forest with a specific concentration in the Pacific Northwest.

In Max Brooks’ new novel, Devolution: A Firsthand Account of The Rainier Sasquatch Massacre, the cryptid plays a major role in this story about a fictional tech-driven community called Greenloop that winds up becoming isolated in a remote part of Washington State after nearby Mount Rainier erupts and strands the residents.

But to call Brooks’ latest project a Bigfoot book is an oversimplification. The California resident masterfully weaves in heavily researched perspectives on society’s over-reliance on technology, the clash caused by development encroaching on nature, compost-driven horticulture, primate behavior and even the Balkan genocide of the ’90s. And it all stemmed from Brooks’ obsession with this controversial subject dating back to childhood.

“This fascination started with fear of Sasquatch as a kid,” Brooks explained. “Just being a Gen-Xer growing up during the first wave of Sasquatch mania and watching shows like In Search Of, Mysterious Monsters and all of these faux documentaries and being absolutely terrified and never having that leave me. I always wanted to write a Bigfoot book. But it was only when I got older and figured out how to do what I was doing and knew the right way to write this, which was to talk about the big stuff that I’m also fascinated by like supply chains.

And trying to anthropomorphize nature and how people are not ready for disaster. I put it all as the backdrop because I found the best way to educate people is to tell them a story—don’t lecture ‘em.”

The plot is driven by the journals of resident Kate Holland, which were recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage. An investigative reporter with the surname Morgan drives the story along by interspersing diary entries with research on the subject and extensive interviews with forestry department first responders. the degree of unpreparedness would be no less realistic, particularly given the benign spin pop culture tries to put on nature.

“This is the problem I have with urbanites trying to anthropomorphize nature,” Brooks said. “With many of my experiences, I’ve seen human beings bringing their [Disney-informed] knowledge of nature into the real wilderness and people get killed. Think about in our regular life as children, how many of us were bitten by dogs that we tried to hug? It was only after some of us got half our faces bitten off that somebody told us you never put your face in a strange dog’s face. We think it’s cute. We think we’re in a Disney movie and the dog thinks it’s under attack. That’s the disconnect I was going for.”

Not unlike fellow late novelists Michael Crichton and Tom Clancy (a major Brooks influence), fact-driven probing is what defines the 48-year-old author’s creative approach, a trait that has carried over to prior projects like World War Z, The Zombie Survival Guide and Minecraft: The Island. This analytical intellectual rigor has also led to his holding dual fellowships at the Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security and the Modern War Institute at West Point. For everything he’s written, Brooks admits that “...research always takes 10 times as long as the writing does. I have to do people learning...book learning... and field research.” For Devolution, he ventured into

the Rainier area to see how treacherous the terrain was (“I had to go to the place where I planted my fictional Greenloop and see if my characters could walk out. If you can walk out, then I don’t have a book.”), planted an indoor garden like his characters did and monitored how long it took to grow (“my fear was writing about the shoots coming up in the book when these shoots wouldn’t have come up for another two weeks”) and creating makeshift arms (“I had to physically make some of the weapons to see if they’d be makable with some of the tools our characters would have at their disposal.”)

While Brooks has not had a Sasquatch encounter, he’s not ready to outright dismiss its existence.

“I’m with Jane Goodall—I will believe in Sasquatch when I see the physical evidence,” he said. “But until I see that evidence, my scientific research has taught me there’s no reason Sasquatch couldn’t or wouldn’t exist.

For the longest time, European explorers in Africa heard about these monsters from the natives. But of course, they dismissed these stories before eventually discovering the gorilla. Where I am in Southern California, at our natural history museum, there is a prehistoric fish as big as my bed that was hauled out of the ocean near Catalina Island that’s millions of years old living in the ocean depths. So we’re not done yet.”

If You Build It, They Will Come

A

nyone going to Canada in the winter needs to bundle up. The brisk cold air is no joke.

But years later, New York Islanders co-owner Jon Ledecky and Tim Leiweke, CEO of the Oak View Group, are laughing about their experience in Montreal.

“I was in Toronto,” Leiweke said, recalling the experience a year or so after Ledecky and Scott Malkin became majority owners of the Islanders.

“They made me come out to Montreal. I went from freezing cold to freaking freezing cold.

To this day, I’ve never let him down on that story and how they made me go to Montreal in the middle of the dead of winter to freeze with them.”

The trio spent a night in a boutique hotel, when it was roughly negative 20 degrees. “Not only was it like 20 degrees below zero when Tim showed up, but he pulled up to this room where he had to wear his overcoat for the entire meeting,” Ledecky said. “It was one of those great moments.”

This is the start of what would eventually be coined the UBS Arena at Belmont Park, a multi-year, multi-million dollar project that will essentially turn Belmont into a one-of-a-kind area. It also marked the start of Leiweke’s organization, which now has more than 300 employees who are working on several arena projects.

UBS recently signed a 20-year deal to be the official title sponsor of the 19,000-seat arena, reportedly worth an estimated $17.5-18 million annually.

“UBS is one of the largest naming right deals ever done for an arena, in particular, for an NHL arena,” Leiweke said.

“It’s an international brand, which was important to us because we plan on being one of the busiest arenas in the world.”

“It’s a great design exercise and the Islanders fans deserve their own home,” Ledecky said. “In terms of the design, we wanted to have all of the elements of Nassau Coliseum, with the intimacy of the ice and the bowl. When Alexander Ovechkin and I were at a wedding together, he said, ‘Wow, I love playing in your building because the fans are right on top of it. I love the noise of them cheering at me or yelling at me. It inspires me.’ We want to have part of that brought over from Nassau to the UBS Arena.”

Ledecky rolled out the UBS Arena Preview Club in Manhattan to show sponsors, executives and suite owners what life will be like in Belmont. It is indeed spectacular. The club is designed to be nearly identical to what it will look like in Belmont, except the Belmont experience will be bigger and even better.

From endless memorabilia to 24-inch seats, a scale model version of the arena and, of course, four Stanley Cups for everyone to take pictures with, it feels like an out-of-body experience. And the host? Well, it’s Ledecky himself, alongside a group of dedicated Islanders employees.

“We want to make the place unique,” Ledecky said.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the ownership group is already brainstorming ways to keep fans safe in 2021, when the UBS Arena at Belmont Park will see its firsts guests.

“The management and construction team have done a phenomenal job as to sanitization for our workers,” Leiweke said of the ongoing construction. “We’re extremely focused on the 600 people we have on site now to protect their wellness, health and safety. We’re geared with our architects, construction folks, Sterling, our project management team, as well as outside consultant groups as to what we’re going to do for health and wellness when it comes to

operating the building.”

The Islanders joined the Wellness Academy, which will create a set of minimum standards for the arena in terms of sanitization.

“You’ll see some technology, for example, Amazon built a concept where people can grab and go and never have to go to a point of purchase or a register to check out,” Leiweke, who also created the Staples Center in Los Angeles, said. “We’re thinking of how to have better purification of our air for the purpose of sanitization. Clearly, in addition to having a janitorial company come in and clean after every event, we’ll have a sanitization crew come in and sanitize after every event. If you listen to the smart people, what we’ll probably see when we open this building is sanitization and the convenience

of the customer in using technology, thinking about air circulation.”

With safety enhancements in mind, the arena is still on pace to open for the 2021 NHL season. However, what makes this group extremely excited is the potential UBS Arena has outside of the Islanders.

In addition to creating a home for Long Island’s hockey club, the UBS Arena is set to take center stage for plenty of concerts, just like Nassau Coliseum. For the performers heading over to Belmont, they’ll have their own locker room and so much more right next to their entrance. It’s all about creating a one-stop-shop for hockey and entertainment.

The creation of a new stadium, combined with a team in the heart of the NHL playoffs, is leading the Islanders’ ticket sales to reach all-new highs.

The demand for tickets at UBS Arena is increasing as the Islanders’ success on the ice, led by head coach Barry Trotz and general manager Lou Lamoriello, means less than 20 percent of season tickets are still available for the 202122 season. The team expects premium inventory to be sold out by early 2021.

No matter how successful the Islanders are, fans will certainly see Ledecky on the Long Island Rail Road and walking around the UBS Arena for years to come. With input from players, the coaching staff, music executives and fans, the UBS Arena is poised to become one of the most popular venues in the nation.

“The great thing for me on Long Island is you go to a game and you meet a grandfather, his son and his grandchild,” he said. “On some occasions, I’ve met four generations. You don’t get to feel that emotion if you sit up high.”
