Hicksville Hero Honored By Town

O

yster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Lou Imbroto, Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato reunited near-drowning victims Vincent and Joseph LaGrega with Christopher Madden of Hicksville at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. Town Highway employee Madden saved the lives of two teenagers after spotting them struggling in the strong currents of the Great South Bay. Madden spotted brothers Vincent and Joseph LaGrega and jumped onto a jet ski to rescue both of the boys who were gasping for air at this point. Madden was able to bring the two boys back to the boat and the LaGrega family credits his actions with saving their sons’ lives that day.

Gyms Reopen With Strict Guidelines

yms and fitness centers across Long Island have sat idly by as dozens of other businesses have reopened since Governor Andrew Cuomo began the process of bringing New York back amid the coronavirus pandemic.

These businesses were given the green light to reopen on Monday, Aug. 24, but at just 33 percent capacity.

Masks are required for those inside of each facility at all times, and they can’t open their doors unless they pass a local health department inspection.

“Only three states have kept gyms closed—New York, New Jersey and North Carolina—affecting the wellbeing of its citizens,” Retro Fitness CEO Andrew Alfano said. “The other 47 states have shown no outbreaks from working out inside a gym, and industry studies have shown that with 49.4 million check ins across the nation, a negligible .0002 percent had any COVID-related incidents, according to MXM.” The facilities will need to keep a close eye on equipment as they begin to reopen. Many gyms already had policies in place before the pandemic that required members to clean machines and weights after using them, but now employees will also have to do so.

The New York State mandate for those ready to get back to working out in a gym includes face masks and not shields.

“Acceptable face coverings include, but are not limited to, cloth-based face coverings and disposable masks appropriate for exercise that cover both the mouth and nose,” the state mandate reads.

Waivers will also need to be signed by employees and guests at gyms and other types of fitness centers. You will need to provide basic information, such as name and address, in order to track people down if someone at the facility contracts COVID-19 and contact tracing is needed.

Locker rooms and restrooms will need to be cleaned at least every two hours, the state said.

MERV-13 filters are now a requirement for all fitness centers, meant to make sure the indoor facilities have proper ventilation to prevent the spread of COVID-19. But a report in Fortune last month stated that, due to the increasing demand of these filters,

Fortunately, many of these businesses have survived the pandemic due to the payment protection program (PPP) loans from the Small Business Administration. Now, they will ease into reopening as the governor will slowly continue to lift restrictions based on the number of cases within a given region.

Glen Cove IDA Approves Garvies Point Tax Abatement Application

n late July, the real estate development company, Georgica Green Ventures LLC, was seeking financial assistance from the City of Glen Cove to help construct affordable housing units at Garvies Point.

At the initial hearing, which took place on July 27, many residents made their comments, concerns and complaints regarding the application known to the members of the board.

The development company appeared before the IDA for a second time on Aug. 18 to hear the status of its application.

During the July meeting, many residents voiced their frustration with the way finances in the city have been handled in the past. Residents were frustrated with the number of development projects that have been

Grant Will Restore Oyster Bay Historical Society’s Earle-Wightman House Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (D–Woodbury) secured a $22,000 grant from the county’s hotel-motel occupancy tax fund to support the Oyster Bay Historical Society’s ongoing efforts to preserve the front façade of the soon-to-be 300-year-old Earle-Wightman Historical House in Oyster Bay. The grant funding, which was approved by the full Nassau County Legislature in late March 2020, will be utilized to repair decay and erosion of paint, windowsills, missing shingles and other abnormalities affecting the outside appearance of the historic structure, which is a New York State historical site and a rare example of early 18th-century architecture in Oyster Bay. “By providing a portal to the past, historic sites like the Earle-Wightman House serve

as a valuable teaching tool in the 21st century,” Lafazan said.

“This investment underscores Nassau County’s commitment to

o you want to be the mayor of Old Westbury?

You don’t do it for the money.

The mayor earns $4,000 per year, while trustees receive $3,500.

It’s a part-time job—Administrator Brian Ridgeway is in charge of operations—but a full-time calling.

And it’s not for amateurs and political novices. Governance demands detailed knowledge of processes and mastery of details; you are entrusted with the taxpayers’ money, after all.

Trustee Ed Novick is running to replace retiring 12-year Mayor Fred Carillo, who was lauded at the Aug. 17 board of trustees meeting for his 38 years of service.

The coronavirus delayed the village elections from June 15 to Sept. 15.

Incumbent trustee Marina Chimerine is seeking another fouryear term while Andrew Weinberg, a former trustee, is on the slate to replace Novick. All three are running

to be sustainable and that the lifestyle that’s afforded the residents continues.”

Novick also serves as the town’s budget officer and said he negotiated the latest five-year contract with the village’s 25 police officers and their benevolent association. It went into force on June 1.

“The village has a unique sort of flavor to it,” Novick stated. “Most of the people that gravitate to Old Westbury typically look to privacy and security.”

He added, “Unlike other municipalities around here, we have our own police department and public works department. Most important of all is that we have our own water department. We have the best water on all of Long Island because this village never industrialized—it went from Quaker farms to large estates and to smaller residential lots.”

Novick noted that the municipal water infrastructure had not been upgraded since the 1960s and needed to be brought into the 21st century.

He used his manufacturing background to help with the analysis, working with outside engineers.

In addition, “I’m tied in with the capital markets so that we were able to get bonds to finance the upgrade,” he said, referring to the $10 million bond. “We went directly to the capital markets. We understood how these markets worked. I actually went to Moody’s to get ratings on our bond issue. Our bonds are rated AAA—only 28 municipalities all of New York State are rated AAA. We’re handling our finances properly.”

Old Westbury water did not have any trace of 1,4-dioxane, an emerging contaminant that’s costing water

districts across Long Island millions to mitigate.

Thanks to the bond, the village was able to close its oldest well, dating to 1935, and build a new well plus a water tank that can hold one million gallons.

“This tank is at ground level,” Novick said. “We were able to take advantage of the elevation in the village so we didn’t have to do an elevated water tank. It won an award.”

Novick added, “It’s an extremely important component to the water system in terms of future development and expansion because we now have capacity.”

Novick wants to see village continue to encourage residential development. Old Westbury has just two commercial establishments.

“One of the things that’s very important as fiduciaries of the village and as trustees is maintaining as much green space as we can, maintaining as much history as possible in the village while at the same time balancing development,” Novick said.

“There are always individuals who like to see no change occur, but development is something that will always continue.”

The future mayor has high praise for the people who help keep the village running smoothly, stating, “I’m trying to make sure that they always have the resources they need to do that job as best as they can.”

“I look forward to being mayor. It’s something that requires a lot of experience—you just can’t step into it,” he said. “My fellow trustees are not only my friends but people I have deep respect for because they’re all engaged.

They’re taking [their positions] very seriously. No one is doing this for the sake of vanity.”

Novick said that when Old Westbury was incorporated in 1924, it was in conjunction with the creation of the Old Westbury Party. All three candidates are running on that line.

“I’m running for mayor to represent the Village of Old Westbury,” Novick concluded. “Whether you’re a Democrat or Republican is up to you, but I’m hoping that everybody that’s here understands that we’re all supposed to be rowing together.”

Garden City’s Seventh Street has been a recent attractor of bees, causing the peace and harmony of outdoor seating and dining to be disrupted. With the reopening of outdoor dining on Seventh Street, it has proven to be, by some, an unfortunate but ‘natural’ circumstance. A Seventh Street proprietor, who chose to remain anonymous, said that customers attracting bees is just part of the season.

“Well unfortunately, August is the month where it happens. Every year in my house [and] at the beach. It happens,” the business owner said.

“I think it’s impacting anyone who likes the outdoors. People are not happy and running inside and there are not many tables. It’s nature. Not much that anybody can do.”

The village has instituted a game plan to “tackle” the bees around the business areas where customers gather.

are attracting the bees. Village Administrator Ralph Suozzi has requested that village sanitation personnel check the open air pails more frequently throughout the day.

The village has also requested that the chamber of commerce ask store owners with open pails to do the same.”

Many of Seventh Street’s businesses declined to comment on the issue when Anton Media Group reached out for comment.

Another Reason To Smile Sorriso opens in Garden City Park

here’s another reason to smile now that the long awaited Italian restaurant Sorriso recently opened its doors in Garden City Park after a three-year roadblock due to county permits.

“We love to offer good food and make customers happy,” general manager Vinny Bulzomi said about why they decided to open the restaurant.

“Customers can expect Italian comfort food.”

Sorriso, which means smile in Italian, offers wood-fired pizza and a wide variety of chicken, pasta, seafood and veal options. There’s also a children’s menu for the youngsters.

The owners of Sorriso also own Pietro’s Brick Oven Pizza in Oyster Bay. “We opened that business in 2015 and it is very successful thanks to our loyal customers and consistent food quality,” Bulzomi said.

Even though everyone is in the midst of a global pandemic, Bulzomi said that business is

picking up.

“Business is starting to pick up with the pandemic,” he said.

“We follow all health department guidelines and maintain an A grade from the health department.”

Sorriso is open Mondays through Wednesdays from 4 to 9 p.m., Thursdays from 1 to 9 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 1 to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 9 p.m.

n Tuesday, Sept. 15, Massapequa Park residents will finally get to vote to see who will lead their community as mayor. Due to the pandemic, the initial election was postponed a number of times after being initially scheduled on Wednesday, March 18. The three choices will be Interim Mayor Theresa Spinosa, who has served on the board for 18 years as a trustee and deputy mayor; current trustee Dan Pearl and his Village Unity Party; and lifelong Massapequa Park resident and activist Dr. Cynthia Paulis running under the Veterans Just Get It Done Party banner.

Why are you running and what do you think are some of the issues the village is currently facing??

Dr. Cynthia Paulis: This village has deteriorated over the years, crime has moved in and the roads are horrible, yet our taxes keep rising and the same people who govern our village have been in power for decades. It’s time to clean house and get new ideas and new people in office who are responsive to the community. As I decided to run, I learned that these village trustees and mayor are receiving health care for life not only for themselves, but for their family as well. The more I looked into it, I realized that some of these people served more than 20 years ago and we as taxpayers

are on the hook for $210,115.99 annually for part-time elected officials who meet twice a month for an hour. This is outrageous.

There was no notification given to the residents nor did they ever have a chance to vote on this. All of this money can go into infrastructure. This has to end immediately.

What are you running on in terms of what you’d like to do if you win the election?

Mayor Teresa Spinosa: I want to continue to maintain our AA2 bond rating, which we have. Overall, my vision is to protect the village by keeping it independent from any influences from outside governments and political organizations, so the residents get to make their own decisions regarding village policies. I want to continue to protect the property values of our residents, which is done by maintaining and improving the infrastructure and attracting merchants that will enhance the vibrancy of our downtown district, which is really booming. I want to continue with our fiscally conservative policies. The board has only raised taxes under Mayors Altadonna and Pravato on the average of 2 percent in the last 18 years. In the last several years, we’ve had zero increase in taxes.

So I want to continue along those lines.

I think any municipality can work within their own budget, if they just take out the red pen and cut costs. We’re able to do that and still able to provide all the services that everyone is still entitled to in our beautiful village.

Village of Massapequa Park Interim Mayor Teresa Spinosa MTS: We have an old infrastructure, so we’re constantly evaluating how we can improve that. We have road work that we have to do. We have approximately two to three miles of roadwork a year that we do. This year, we’re looking at the list. We actually have a list that we had prepared by an outside engineering firm that rated all the streets in the village. So every year, we take the worst off the list and work that way. It’s very methodical, how we do it. This year, we’re going to continue with that. We spend about $800,000 a year or more on roadwork, so that’s a lot of money for a village our size. The impact of all those improvements are starting to show. As you drive around the village, you can see that we’ve done a lot of roadwork and continue to do it on the roads that need it the most.

Why are you running for mayor?

Dan Pearl: I’m running for mayor because I’m a fresh look and I want to change the path of how our elected officials are choosing themselves over our people for argument’s sake, with health care.

If you’re an elected official and you’re going to take the health care benefits, you should really contribute to that.

Why are you running and what do you think are some of the issues the village is currently facing?

DP: We’re running on a couple of things. There are quality-of-life issues having to do with paving roads and pedestrian safety. We have a lot of issues with garbage and trash along the railroad from Sunrise Highway and the state roads. Residents are complaining about getting that cleaned up.

Taxes and waste. We’d like to do a top-to-bottom review of our overall operations—where can we save money and where can we make some cuts? The ways we can do it is with the health insurance—the free ride should be over. Everybody should

contribute to their benefits.

And operationally, one of the big things we can come up with when you talk to the residents is sensible code enforcement.

That’s a major issue of what’s going on in the village. Everybody feels like they’re being overly monitored by the village code enforcement. I think we’ve got get an ethics committee established in the village to make sure certain things aren’t being done unethically.

The Massapequa Park mayoral election is being held on Sept. 15.

On Aug. 19, Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the Department of Public Service (DPS) has completed the first phase of its investigation of utilities’ response to Tropical Storm Isaias on Aug. 4.

As a result, the governor stated in a release, DPS has threatened to terminate PSEG-LI’s contract with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) “if the investigation deems it appropriate.”

The DPS also “called on PSEG LI to forfeit its 2020 incentive compensation of approximately $10 million as a first step and to use the proceeds toward compensating families and small businesses who lost food and medicine as a result of the extensive outages, and PSEG LI has agreed to do so.”

The investigation faulted PSEG-LI “for a failure of its outage management system, inaccurate communications and problems with its call center.”

The governor is proposing legislation to make it easier to strip a utility of its municipal franchise and seamlessly transfer its assets to a new operator.

On Aug. 20, The New York State Legislature scheduled a hearing in which the heads of the various utilities were to be questioned about their performance during the storm.

The Nassau County Legislature also got into the act. On Aug. 17, its Sandy Review Committee quizzed PSEG-LI President and Chief Operating Officer Dennis Eichhorn.

Alternate Deputy Presiding Officer Denise Ford (D–Long Beach), in a statement, said that “the purpose of this meeting will be to hear from PSEG’s management about how they prepared for Tropical Storm Isaias; their communication with residents; and how we can remedy any problems that occurred prior to any other severe weather events that may happen in the future.”

Legislator Josh Lafizan (D-Woodbury) asked Eichhorn, “What assurances can you give us today, on the record, that what happened won’t happen again?”

Eichhorn replied, “The only assurance I can give you is that we’re not happy with the communications, we’re not happy with the impact it had on our customers and your constituents. It’s not the level of service we expect to provide, and we’re going to fix it.”

He added, “We’re going to make sure that things are improved.

There’s no hiding from the issues.

We take full responsibility for what occurred. It wasn’t what we expected to happen. I think we performed well in other storms and we really

have to get to the root cause here and make those improvements.

There’s no denying it—the restorations and the communications was not acceptable.”

In a press conference after the hearing Eichhorn was asked if he would apologize to the taxpayers, He responded, “This experience that the customers had is not what we’re known for at PSEG. We take a lot of pride in satisfying our customers. The experience they went through we understand was frustrating. It’s something that we never want to repeat again, so we will be taking action to improve and get better.’

Quizzed at the legislative hearing about compensating customers for damages, Eichhorn said he would look into it.

The next day, PSEG-LI released a statement that it would reimburse “residential customers up to $250 for food spoilage and commercial customers up to $5,000 if their service was interrupted for 72 hours or more because of Tropical Storm Isaias. Food spoilage claims of $150 or less must include an itemized list. Food spoilage over $150 must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, canceled checks or photographs of spoiled items).”

The utility will cover losses up to $300 for prescription medications that spoiled due to lack of refrigeration.

Proof must be furnished and the deadline is Sept. 16. PSEG-LI will not process claims over the phone.

The utility does not cover property damage or business losses caused by weather.

District Seeks ‘Return To Learn’

he school year begins on Sept.

9 for Carle Place School District students. And unless there has been an unexpected spike in the coronavirus infection rate, all 1,345 of them will be in the district’s three buildings that day, along with 445 staff.

Governor Andrew Cuomo authorized schools to reopen for in-person learning. However, if infection rates reach 9 percent or more over a seven-day period, the governor will shut down the schools.

Carle Place, in its “Return to Learn” plan, is ready to institute remote learning, or a mix of distance and in-class teaching as necessary.

The district, in a plan narrative, “believes that all day ‘traditional’ in-person school is imperative for both the instructional and social/emotional needs of our students.”

Schools Superintendent Christine Finn told Anton Media Group earlier this summer that the board of education had authorized the purchase of

“That is one of the silver linings of [the shutdown], and it’s fabulous,” Finn commented. “Regardless of whether we’re in class or remote, they’ll have that tool. That was one of my five-year plan goals.”

The other silver lining, according to Finn, was that “all our teachers are now experts in Google Classroom and Zoom and other things that they had

never been required to know before.

They learned how to do [remote learning] well.”

According to the plan, “The virtual learning platform has been significantly advanced and will provide an improved experience for students, staff and families.”

A survey drew 1,487 responses from parents and 77.9 percent replied that they would send their kids to school if safety protocols were put into place.

Mental health support and other therapies will be made available.

Parents may choose to not have their kids attend classes, for health or other reasons. These pupils, according to the plan, will be provided “a comparable virtual instruction experience.”

Safety procedures will be followed, with temperatures being taken, and masking, social distancing and hand-washing required. Disinfection and cleaning protocols will be put in place.

Desks will be outfitted with plastic shields on top for further protection.

If anyone tests positive for

COVID-19, “the district will follow additional deep cleaning protocols, and may choose to close areas of the school, a particular building, or the entire district, depending on each unique situation.”

Younger students will be served lunch in class. Those in the middle/ high school “will use the cafeterias and additional seating areas to ensure social distancing.”

Further, according to the plan, “The student schedule will allow for breaks and recess opportunities” and will create “opportunities for students to go outside during the school day, including during instructional time for any and all subjects.”

If weather permits, all phys ed classes will be conducted outdoors.

The situation remains fluid, and the plan noted that “Staff and families should be prepared to close at any time.”

WE LOVE OUR PETS North Shore Animal League America To Host Virtual Walk And Wag Event

orth Shore Animal League America, one of the world’s largest no-kill animal rescue organizations, will be holding its fourth annual Walk and Wag event, officially starting this September. The event doesn’t last just a day, but an entire two month, from Sept. 1 until Oct. 31, and it is open to participants nationwide.

Kacie Bogan, the events manager at North Shore Animal League America, said the event is all about fundraising for homeless animals and building a sense of community between humans and their canines.

“North Shore Animal League America really wanted to create an event that brought the animal loving community together and especially with their walking buddy, so an event where you can actually bring your dog with you,” she said. “That’s why we wanted to create Walk and Wag, [and] then all at the same time raise money for homeless pets.”

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event is being held virtually for the first time ever. She said in the past, the celebration event is quite a thrill, not just for the animals, but for everyone involved.

“The actual day of the event is basically a celebration of all the funds that were raised for the animals, and bringing the animals together and having everybody in one place to celebrate all of the amazing work that they have done,” Bogan said. “At our actual event we have food trucks, we have fun games for the dogs to play and it’s just a really, really fun event. It’s sad we won’t be able to be in-person, but we still want to keep the momentum going for this incredible event.”

Like many organizations on Long Island, North Shore Animal League America had to cancel most of its events for the season due to the pandemic.

“We had to cancel all of our major fundraising events,” Bogan said. “We had to cancel our annual luncheon. We had to cancel our gala. That’s why Walk and Wag and the fundraising are so important.

mission this year.”

She said fundraising from the event goes towards the no-kill mission.

“All of the funds go to our mission,” Bogan said. “So it’s all for the animals. It’s all for everything we do that is mission-related. So whether that be going to different shelters and rescuing animals at overcrowded shelters or rescuing animals that locally need help. Basically, keeping the animals that we have in great condition in our facility and getting them ready for their forever, loving home.”

Bogan said North Shore Animal League America decided to do a longer event because they wanted people to have the freedom to participate as they please.

“We wanted to do a longer event to give

participants the flexibility and walk when it’s convenient for them,” she said. “It just makes it easier for people to get involved, instead of having this one day to do something, you can make your own schedule. It also gives more time for people to fundraise. During these difficult times, it’s harder to fundraise and it gives more time and people the ability to get involved.”

As part of the event, participants can share their photos of themselves and their pets on social media, using the hashtag #walkandwag2020.

“Since we can’t be in person, we wanted to build a community where people can see what other people are doing and how they’re fundraising and when they’re walking and see their canine companions. It’s really about building this virtual community since we can’t have the community in person on that special day,” Bogan said.

North Shore Animal League America was founded in 1944 and celebrated its 75th anniversary last year.

Bogan said the organization has come far since its inception.

“One of the greatest things about North Shore Animal League America is that we’ve led the way in pioneering humane relocation,” she said. “So through these efforts, we’ve rescued dogs, cats, puppies and kittens from all across the country and around the world. From places including and not limited to North Carolina, Virginia, Oklahoma, Tennessee, California, the Cayman Islands and Taiwan. So we are really a national organization, but we also get involved with the world. So that’s really why we’ve been able to say that we are the world’s largest no-kill rescue, nurture, adopt and educate organization. We’re not just a shelter. We’re also a no-kill, we’re a rescue, we nurture, we adopt and we educate. So with all of those pieces, that’s what makes us really different.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ABOUT SEWANHAKA’S MASCOT In regards to the article, “Sewanhaka Debates Racially Insensitive Mascot” in the Aug. 5-11 edition.

I am a graduate of the Sewanhaka High School Class of 1972. First of all, I have utmost respect for all people and the first on my list are the American Indians.

When I first attended Sewanhaka, the first thing I asked was, “What kind of name was this?” It was Indian. Our school handbook even explained what

Sewanhaka meant and how it was related to the American Indian. In fact, that is where the school colors came from, translated from the word Sewanhaka.

Hence by being a Sewanhakan, I felt that it gave the utmost respect that a high school was carrying an Indian name, just as Mineola, Wantagh or Massapequa. And by doing so, I felt it paid homage to a great people. I was sincerely proud of that, and what

better mascot for a school that has an Indian name than to be called the Indians?

In 1972, Sewanhaka was state champion in lacrosse, which is an Indian name.

At that time and before, the school was known throughout the tri-state area and as far as Rhode Island and Maryland as the Sewanhakan Indians.

We even had an Olympian (four-time gold medalist Al Oerter, a discus thrower).

We were proud to be called Indians. Maybe we

were white, black, brown or yellow, but we were all Indians and our tribe was Sewanhaka.

Now there is no doubt in my mind that there are statues and mascots that need to be changed in our great country, but just maybe, they got this one wrong.

Besides, can you imagine if they changed the name of the Sewanhakan Indian mascot to a fictitious bird, like a Seahawk?

AFTER THE STORM Many of us in the New York/New Jersey area, in the midst of a pandemic, were hit by Tropical Storm Isaias.

Some people never lost power and some were without power for days. Our household was without power for seven days.

It was a frustrating time.

It was similar to the stay at home order we had to follow because of the pandemic.

Isn’t it interesting that we continue to be given these blocks of time where we cannot live our normal

BE THANKFUL FOR EXTRA HELP AFTER THE STORM I have had it with political posturing of some government officials over the storm damage caused by an act of God. So, I am considering collecting all of the posts from the local politicians that complain about, denigrate, and castigate on social media and in the press, the very tough job that the more than 3,000 out-of-state workers from more than 15 states have done to help us. I will also, to be fair, include all complimentary items that I find.

This will enable me to send, if I wish, these statements to the governors of each of those states, with a letter of sincere appreciation from me, and all individual local residents who do not have a political agenda,

showing how much a few local politicians (some of whom who cannot even get legislation passed) have “respected and welcomed and appreciated” (in their owns words, why has the response been so poor etc.) the mammoth work that these crews have done, like coming here from as far as Texas or more, and working 16-hour days for us.

I am certain that the next time a request for help comes to them they will just jump with joy and rush here to get this great welcome, knowing how nice and friendly Long Island is to those who freely offer their time to assist.

They blame PSEG for failing to be able to determine what a storm will do?

Especially any tropical storm or hurricane, and to be able to prevent based on “being omnipotent?” Even the weather persons cannot do that. Acts of God are just that.

And unless PSEG is God, it cannot do any better than anyone else.

If there were no storm or minor storms and it could be shown that a risk was already present then you might have a sensible argument. But to blame any utility for damage done by winds that snapped or blew down 50 to 100 foot trees and threw big branches and trunks, some weighing tons, 20 to 50 feet or more is ludicrous. I witnessed both.

If these great” leaders” (who obviously feel that they can out guess Mother Nature) want no damage

from trees in a storm just demand that all trees within a minimum of 50 feet of power lines be removed or cut to less than 20-feet high. They obviously have no idea how much time and effort it takes to clear even one power line affected by a storm nor do they understand that no one can plan or protect from all events of this magnitude created by Mother Nature.

Instead of making thoughtless statements for self-aggrandizement, they should be out proactively assisting, and working with the utilities to rationally plan to minimize the potential for future such costly events, understanding that no one predict or prevent all such events.

Nassau County NICE Bus And Federal Transit Administration Are Perfect Partners Federal support for public transportation in Nassau County continues to grow. In federal fiscal year 2020, the Federal Transit Administration will fund Nassau County NICE bus projects, such as the purchase of 23 replacement compressed natural gas (CNG) buses at a cost of $13,800,000 with a federal share of $11,000,000; capital cost of third party contracting (maintenance of fleet and support facilities to keep them in a state of good repair) at a cost of $7,500,000 with a federal share of $6,000,000 and

purchase of 14 replacement paratransit vehicles at a cost of $1,400,000 with a federal share of $1,120,000. FTA will also fund Facility Capital Replacement & Improvements (shop improvements such as heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, CNG fueling station & bus area operations refurbishment) at a cost of $1,500,000 with a federal share of $1,200,000; non-revenue and support equipment (dispatch, patrol and service vehicles) at a cost of $600,000 with a federal share of $480,000 and engineering design services at a cost of $300,000 with a federal share of $240,000.

Nassau County can take advantage of FTA pre-award authority prior to

grant approval. This affords the opportunity to start projects months earlier and incur costs for reimbursement at a later date after grant approval.

It has been 47 years since Nassau County took control of all bus routes from private operators. Nassau County, New York State and the federal governments combined have invested more than $740 million in capital improvements. Operating subsidy dollars easily top more than $1 billion.

NICE services continue to be one of the best bargains around. Since the 1950s, the average cost of riding a bus in Nassau County has gone up at a lower rate than either the consumer price index or inflation. The Metro Card introduced in 1996 affords a free transfer between NICE bus and the NYC Transit bus or subway. Prior to this, riders had to pay two full fares.

Purchasing either a weekly or monthly pass further reduces the cost per ride.

Many employers offer transit checks, which pay even more of the costs.

In the end, it all comes down to the

availability of increased funding for additional transportation service to serve residents. Operating subsidies are required to increase the level of service and reduce the amount of time one waits for a bus on existing routes.

Same for adding more off-peak, evening and weekend service.

Let us give thanks to the hard working men and women of the Nassau County Department of Public Works Transit Division and their colleagues at NICE bus that made all of this possible. This includes obtaining millions of federal and state capital and operating assistance every year.

Larry Penner is a transportation advocate, historian and writer who previously worked for the Federal Transit Administration Region 2 New York office. This included the development, review, approval and oversight for more than $660 million worth of capital projects and programs in grants to Nassau County from 1983 to 2014.

Back To The Drive-In Movie While Long Islanders continue to practice social distancing, it seems like we won’t be congregating inside a movie theater any time soon. No matter the recommended precautions and meticulous cleaning procedures, inside gatherings aren’t on people’s radar just yet.

We’ve had great success on Long Island in flattening the curve and staying safe. Do we really want to blow everything to see the new Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure movie in a theater?

Unless they can protect everyone with a clear plastic bubble of isolation, I’m not sure it’s worth the risk.

That’s why the recent influx of pop-up drive-in movies is so intriguing. Many towns, including the Town of Oyster Bay, are enticing families to use their vehicles as private viewing bubbles with family-friendly movies being offered for free down by the ocean.

Other venues, like the Bayville Adventure Park, are offering the drivein experience with classic movies for an admission price per vehicle, which includes a voucher for food and drink.

We decided to give Bayville a try on a Saturday night to see Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Our friends Karen and Glenn, who live in Bellmore, were still without power from Isaias and needed a night out more than we did. We packed

Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan filed legislation on Aug. 14 to establish new standards for protecting residents of future senior residential communities from extended power outages.

Following the haphazard and woefully inadequate PSEG-LI response to Tropical Storm Isaias that left tens of thousands of Nassau County residents without power for a week or more, Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (D—Woodbury) filed legislation on Friday, Aug. 14 to establish new standards for protecting residents of future senior residential communities from extended power outages.

Lafazan’s proposal requires any new senior housing, defined in this code as intended for residents ages 55 and above, to be equipped with a standby generator that can provide power to individual dwellings for 96 consecutive hours during a power outage. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office will establish guidelines for inspecting the generators to ensure functionality and adequate fueling. The law will apply to new construction commencing on or after April 1, 2021.

Harrowing news reports following Tropical Storm Isaias documented the plight of vulnerable Nassau residents, including those at the Woodbury Gardens Senior Apartments, who were without power for nearly a week.

Woodbury Gardens’ residents include seniors that rely upon perishable medications, electric-powered medical devices and electric-powered mobility aids.

South Woods Middle School student Grace Chenxin Liu from Syosset was selected as a Long Island Young Scholar of Mathematics to participate in the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students for the academic year 2020-21.

Grace, a rising seventh grader, was one of approximately 87 students to be accepted into the institute, and one of 25 students in grades seven and eight to be selected for this year’s program. The program is designed to engage gifted students, grades five through 10, in creative problem solving in mathematics and science.

Classes meet at SUNY Old Westbury during the school year on Saturday mornings and include topics, such as problem-solving strategies, number theory, geometry, geoboards, probability and statistics and calculation of the speed of sound, among many others.

The Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students is one of the most competitive programs in the nation. Each year, approximately 700 outstanding students are nominated by principals of schools on Long Island for 84

available spots. Selection by the institute implies that a student is among the top one-tenth of one percent of all students in mathematics on Long Island in their grade.

Town Highway employee Madden saved the lives of two teenagers after spotting them struggling in the strong currents of the Great South Bay. “Our community takes great pride in recognizing the amazing actions of Christopher Madden, who displayed heroism during a time of crisis,” Saladino said. “Christopher’s quick thinking and courageous actions saved these teenagers lives and had he not responded as he did, the outcome would have been tragically different.

Christopher Madden is not only a Good Samaritan, but an exemplary Town of Oyster Bay employee. We commend him for this lifesaving rescue.”

The 17-year-old LaGrega and his family were boating and attempted to anchor closer to the shore in the choppy water of the Great South Bay. LaGrega jumped into the water in an attempt to swim to the beach and underestimated the extremely challenging conditions. Joel Samberg grew up in Westbury’s Salisbury Park section and attended W.T. Clarke High School. He got an early start in the writing life as a stringer for the Westbury Times. He populates his new novel, Blowin’ In The Wind, with scenes and characters from his childhood in that 1960s suburban setting. Centered on Daniel Hillman, a precocious musical talent, it asks the age-old question, “What will I do with my life?”

The novel follows Daniel’s path to self-knowledge, with all the joys and agonies of the teenage years. Featuring sharply-etched portraits of family members, friends and neighbors, as well as encounters with such future famous people as Hillary Rodham (later Clinton) and Billy Joel. Samberg even includes incidents that really happened to him, including meeting famous deejay Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow at the WABC-AM studios in Manhattan.

A graduate of Hofstra University, Samberg went on to hold a string of marketing and corporate communications jobs, and articles for numerous publications. Samberg is the author of four nonfiction books, the latest of which is Some Kind of Lonely Clown: The Music, Memory & Melancholy Lives of Karen Carpenter. He wrote and narrated a segment about the late singer for NPR’s All Things Considered.

n The Binge, an original production streaming on Hulu, all drugs and alcohol are illegal in the United States save for one day a year when anyone can participate in the debauchery for a 12-hour period. At the heart of the plot, high school friends Griffin (Skyler Gisondo), Hags (Dexter Darden) and Andrew (Eduardo Franco) scheme to make the most of Binge Day by crashing a party where Griffin hopes to prom-pose to his childhood sweetheart, who also happens to be the daughter of straight-laced Principal Carlsen (Vince Vaughn). If this sounds like a certain dystopian action horror film franchise with a satirical twist, you wouldn’t be too far off the mark according to Jordan VanDina, the film’s screenwriter.

“So I was watching The Purge and thought that The Binge could be the comedy version of it,” VanDina explained.

“I started with the title, which is probably how all great artists start—with just a title— and worked backwards. My favorite movies are teen comedies like Superbad and Dazed & Confused, so I thought I would write in that style. So that was it. I wrote it when nobody asked me and sent it around.”

Getting his project picked up by the subscription video on demand service was quite an accomplishment, given the fact that the Holbrook native got his start writing full-length scripts and posting them online at his website www.weekendscripts.com. His efforts yielded spec titles like Lord of the Fyre Fest, jumped to

number one on Reddit and got featured in Billboard, Yahoo and trended on Twitter. VanDina was surprised at the reaction he received to an exercise he was doing on a whim.

“My most viral one was called Fast Nein: The Fast & The Fuhrer and that’s were The Fast & The Furious team go back to race Hitler,” he said. “Then we did a live read with Nick Kroll playing Hitler and Paul Scheer and all these other people were involved.”

When it came to casting for The Binge, VanDina liked Gisondo’s work in the 2015 National Lampoon Vacation reboot and knew of Franco’s work via the American mockumentary web television series American Vandal. But for the Sachem North alum, Vaughan was a dream get that became reality when Binge director Jeremy Garelick called in a favor.

“Pie-in-the-sky, you think ‘What would it be like if I could get Vince Vaughan,’ because he was in Wedding Crashers and Old School, my favorite comedies,” VanDina said. “I never thought we could get somebody like that but thanks to Jeremy, the director, who was friends with him from The Breakup, he agreed to do it, for probably no money I’m sure.”

cast star power, the experience brought to the set by the veteran actor made for a richer experience on this six-week shoot for the screenwriter.

“He called me when he first read the script to tell me how much he enjoyed it and his thoughts on it,” VanDina said. “Once [Vince] came on board, I met him the day before we started shooting and we just talked for a long time. He was so gracious with his time telling me about Wedding Crashers, all his movies and the processes. The best thing about it was that I would sit with Vince before we’d shoot his scenes and I’d watch him improv and write down what he was improv-ing and it was so much better than what I had written.

So it was really an advantage to have him riffing on everything and all his scenes are 10 times better than they were written. It was a great learning experience for me.”

With his first sold script under his belt, VanDina is working with Steven Spielberg and just sold a script starring comedian Jermaine Fowler to Netflix.

“I’m writing on the Animaniacs reboot, the Steven Spielberg cartoon,” he said. “It’s pretty awesome. He’s pretty involved, so he’s giving a lot of notes and he reads the outlines and the scripts. That’s very cool. As for Cocaine Hippos, I don’t know when we’ll ever be able to film a movie again, but that’ll start when we can do that.”

American Pie (1999) “It was so iconic to me. I saw it with my grandparents, which was the most awkward possible movie to see in the theater with your grandparents. I think I was probably nine or 10 when I saw it. It had such a lasting impression on me. I didn’t even think you could do this in movies. I was both so embarrassed and elated at the same time.”

Wet Hot American Summer (2001) “I’m a huge David Wayne fan, so [especially] everything he does and that style of comedy.

Again, I felt the same way—I could not believe people were doing that. It was so weird because I saw it when I was 14 and thought this was what I wanted my career to be—Wet Hot American Summer.”

Superbad (2007) “It just holds up so well and has all the mechanics of being a great story, but every second of it is so funny. It doesn’t feel dated, even if you re-watch it.”

Murder In Westbury

The Homicide Squad is investigating an incident that occurred on Aug. 16, at 1:05 a.m. in Westbury.

According to detectives, Third Precinct officers responded to the parking lot of 445 Union Ave. for a call of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers located a male with a gunshot wound.

The victim was transported by a Nassau County Police Department ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased by a physician. The location where the victim was found is in close proximity to a house party that occurred the previous night. The investigation is ongoing.

Out Of Control Utility Truck Kills Bicyclist in East Garden City

The Homicide Squad reports the arrest of a Florida man for an incident that occurred on Aug. 14, at 4:37 p.m. in East Garden City.

According to detectives, Matthew Mummaw, 33, of Jacksonville, FL, was operating a bucket truck and while driving southbound on Merchants Concourse struck five vehicles that

were stopped at the red light at the intersection of Corporate Drive.

Mummaw continued southbound on Merchants Concourse where he struck a bicyclist at the Meadowbrook Parkway overpass. Mummaw then made a right hand turn onto Stewart Avenue where he was involved in a head on collision with two more vehicles before finally coming to a stop. Third Precinct officers arrested Mummaw at that location. Mummaw was transported to a nearby hospital for assessment and treatment. The bicyclist, a 39-year old male, was pronounced at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Mummaw is charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an incident, two charges of driving while ability impaired, second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations. He will be arraigned at a later date when medically practical.

Murder In Levittown

The Homicide Squad is investigating a homicide that occurred on Aug. 13, at 11:45 p.m. in Levittown.

According to detectives, officers

responded for a disturbance that was occurring at a residence located on Cord Lane. Upon officers arrival, 61-year-old victim Cheryl Dinapoli was found deceased and 67-year-old defendant Thomas Dinapoli was found injured. Both had multiple gunshot wounds. The male victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he is in stable condition, where he was subjected to assessment and treatment. Dinapoli is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder. He will be arraigned at a later date when medically practical.

Officers Assaulted In Great Neck The Sixth Squad reports the arrest of a Great Neck man for the assault on a police officer that occurred on Aug. 15, at 3:30 a.m. in Great Neck.

According to detectives, police responded for a disturbance at the Bakers Hill Tavern, located at 621 Middle Neck Rd. Defendant Kevin Rodriguez, 23, approached responding officers and began to yell at them. Officers ordered Rodriguez to disperse several times, which he refused. Rodriguez then approached an officer while flaring his arms in an aggressive manner. Officers

placed Rodriguez under arrest, at which time he spat on an officer’s face. While Rodriguez was being placed into a police ambulance, he kicked another officer in the head.

Rodriguez was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment. Both officers were also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Rodriguez is charged with assaulting a police officer, second-degree obstructing governmental administration, disorderly conduct, two charges of second-degree harassment and resisting arrest. He was arraigned on Aug. 16 in Mineola.

Water Emergency In Wantagh The Marine Bureau reports the details of a water emergency that occurred on Aug. 13, at 1:47 p.m. in Wantagh.

According to police, while on routine patrol, Marine 1 spotted two individuals clinging to a jet ski that was submerged in Bellmore Channel. Officers were able to pull the passengers, a 25-year-old female and a 25-year-old male, to safety.

Both individuals were transported to Wantagh Marina. Neither passenger suffered an injury.

DWIGHT HALL “HAP” ROLLINS 1926  2020

Dwight Rollins, of Winchester VA, died peacefully in his sleep on August 13, 2020 at age 93.

Born August 25, 1926 to Carle and Dorothy Rollins in Flushing, New York, he was raised in Manhasset, where he graduated from Manhasset High School in 1944. He earned the name “Hap”, derived from “Happy” in high school due to his sunny disposition, which carried through his life. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a BS in Business in 1951.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1944 where he trained in Arizona as a bombardier before WWII ended in 1945. He received an Honorable Discharge in1946. Dad was a member of The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

He met his beautiful wife Virginia DiGregorio during Virginia’s first few years of teaching at Manhasset High School. At the time, Dwight was a salesman for American Viscose Corporation working out of Baltimore. They were married in 1954 in Poughkeepsie, New York, and had four children: David, Carla, Patricia and Michael.

Dad faithfully served his community for over twenty years, first as Finance Director and then Comptroller for the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County on Long Island. During that time the family lived in Manhasset; first on Webster Avenue, then later on Plandome Road in the Village of Plandome Heights.

Over the years, Dad gave himself wholeheartedly to local volunteer organizations. He was Past Commander of American Legion Post 304; Commissioner, Manhasset Park District; Planning Board member, Village of Plandome Heights; coach or assistant coach for local PBC or CYO teams; Cub Scout leader, and he participated in numerous other civic projects and organizations.

Dad and Mom were always faithful communicants at the local Catholic Church in whatever community they lived.

After retirement from the Town of North Hempstead in 1991, Dad and Mom built a retirement home and relocated to the Governor’s Land at Two Rivers, Williamsburg, VA. Several years later, they moved to Haymarket, VA, and finally to Westminster Canterbury Independent Living facility in Winchester, VA, where he lived happily with Mom until his death.

Dad and Mom loved to travel, visiting Europe several times. His favorite participatory sport in high school was lacrosse, and later as an adult he was an avid golfer. Dad loved his family, work, golf, skiing and sailing in his younger years, Lionel trains, woodworking, photography, pottery, card and board games, jigsaw puzzles, reading, and a Perfect Manhattan on special occasions, but most of all he loved to be with Mom. Dad was known for his dry sense of humor, his clichés, his card-playing ability (especially Bridge, Cribbage, Gin Rummy, and Five-card Poker), the great way he would share the higher mysteries of how things work and how to do things right! He was a wonderful husband and father and will be so dearly missed.

Dwight is survived by his wife Virginia, son David of Keller TX, daughters Carla of Winchester VA, and Patricia of Fairfax VA, son Michael of Charleston SC, 13 grandchildren and 6 greatgrandchildren.

A funeral service was held at Westminster Canterbury. There will be a family burial at St. Mary’s Church in Wappinger Falls, New York at a later date. Margaret resided with her family in Glen Cove for 57 years. She was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church. The Lord called her by name on July 18.

James Herbert Parsons was born on June 9, 1928 in Greentown, PA to Susie and Edward Parsons. He was a talented artist, graduating from Pratt University. He received a Master’s in Teaching from Kutztown University, then taught art in Roslyn Schools. Herb was head of the Audio/Visual Department at CSHL, 1979-2004.

He married Margaret Engley on July 6, 1958. He was the beloved father of five; James, Catherine (Eric), Jonathan, Eileen, Elizabeth (Federico); and as the Grandfather of two; Kahlil and Avanell. Herb resided with his family in Glen Cove for 57 years. The Lord called him by his name on April 23.

An Invaluable Employee, A Better Friend

by Joe Rizza For a decade, from approximately 2000 to 2010, I had the honor and privilege of serving as the editor of the Mineola American, one of the newspapers published by the Anton Media Group. Although I loved writing articles and covering events around the Village of Mineola, my favorite part about the job was meeting residents and business leaders that gave the community its identity. Some of the employees became great friends. Of course, friendship also came from my fellow employees. As Anton Media Group is a local business, the very people who put out the newspapers every week were such a tight knit group. One of the most integral members of our work family at Anton was a jovial fellow by the name of Tom Baade. Sadly, Tom recently passed away and his presence at Anton, as well as in my own life, will always be missed.

For thirty years, Tom was the Information Technology (IT) manager at Anton, which meant that he kept all the computers and networks up and running for the writers, editors, and page designers. “They pay me to play with computers,” he used to say.

Tom was perhaps the most relied on member of the team at Anton. He was also the most intelligent person I have ever met in my life. Having gone to Penn State to study chemistry, he decided computers were his passion and so he self-taught himself programming. He maintained the servers at Anton so that all of the computers could connect with each other. This made the design of every page in every one of Anton’s numerous newspapers possible. He was also responsible for troubleshooting all of our computers, which meant he was constantly on call, and he often worked late into the evenings and weekends, so that everything worked smoothly. A resident of Port Jefferson who took the Long Island Railroad to the Mineola station every morning. Tom was the man behind the scenes who was committed to local journalism. In fact, he began his career as a proofreader. However, Mr. Karl Anton recognized Tom’s brilliance and put him in charge of the computer system.

It’s impossible, though, to describe Tom just in terms of his skill, knowledge and dedication to his employer. It was his personality and huge heart that endeared him to us all. He was the person who brought a smile to everyone’s face whenever he appeared in any of the company’s departments. I can still hear that hearty laugh of his that was so contagious. Even though the world of technology can sometimes be frustrating, Tom always took the high road.

“I never heard him say a negative word about anyone,” said Darrie Dolan, one of Tom’s closest friends at Anton Media Group.

Upon Tom’s departure from Anton in 2018, an article that appeared in Anton Media Group called Tom “the unquestioned Most Valuable Employee at Anton.” “If you had a problem here at Anton, all eyes turned in one direction,” the article stated. “He was funny, smart, polite, always the gentlemen.”

I was fortunate to have known Tom on a personal level as he became one of my closest friends. I always remember going to lunch at Ben’s Deli in Carle Place with him, during which we would discuss pop culture; Tom was a big Star Trek, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings fan. I would also fill him in on what happened at Village of Mineola board meeting and Mineola School District school board meetings to which he would always have a witty and humorous anecdote to contribute. I remember going to the movies with him, after which we could discuss what we saw for hours. Tom was never short on words. I remember the dinners we had at Barraida in Mineola where we would see Manny Carvalho, one of the great business leaders in the Mineola community.

When we lose someone who has played a big part in our lives, it’s difficult not to be sad. But those who knew Tom have so many memories of his hearty laugh and how he could literally talk for hours on any subject. He left an indelible mark on those who knew him. If a life is not measured in terms of its longevity, but its impact on others, then Tom truly lived a rich life.

I will truly miss him.”

many of the animals she cared for greatly on the Rainbow Bridge. She will be greatly missed by those that survive her and her abundance of friends.

GREAT NECK Although Elsie Blum only moved from California to Great Neck in 1993, she quickly became known to people all over town. It was easy to recognize her as she walked along the streets with her two dogs. Furthermore, it was amusing to see her cat following them as well.

In time, Elsie outlived all three animals. She also outlived her husband Johnny who had a stroke not long after they settled here. She refused to let him be put in a senior residence and cared him herself at home. In 2014, she moved to the Cutter Mill Atria bringing along her newest roommate, a dog named Cough Drop. Unfortunately, Cough Drop died about six months ago. He didn’t live to help Elsie celebrate her 100th birthday on July 19. And on Aug. 16, Elsie died too. She was not a victim of the coronavirus. She had done it all and she was ready to go.

MANHASSET Peter A. Lynn, formerly of Manhasset, a son of Roseclaire and Richard Lynn of Sands Point and East Hampton, passed away on June 5. He married Linda Berry of Manhasset, where they settled to raise their daughter Alexandra “Sandy” Lynn, his pride and joy. He was a past member of the Princeton Club of NY and Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. His passions were his family, friends, reading, biking, skiing, sailing and attending his daughter’s crew regattas. He will be remembered for his quick wit, intelligence and kindness. Peter leaves behind his beloved wife Linda and daughter Sandy, father Richard, his nieces Sarah-Jane Lynn of Zurich, Switzerland and Marion Lynn of NYC, a brother Nicholas of Paris, France , a sister-in-law Helene of East Hampton and many close childhood friends. He

was predeceased by his mother, Roseclaire Lynn.
