Residents are coming together to oppose a proposed luxury apartment building on West Shore Road
Flooding Concerns Catrone pointed out that if the apartment building were to be built, it would be among the tallest buildings in the town of North Hempstead. While Southern Land Company says that two of the seven stories would be underground for parking, that still leaves five stories above ground and the dangers of underground parking in a DEC wave action zone.The parcel of land proposed for SLC’s new development is in a designated area along the coast at high risk for flooding due to storms or seismic sources. Structures built in such loca tions have Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regulations and recommen dations to consider when building. FEMA’s regulations set forth procedures and responsibilities, including avoiding flood plain development and new construction in wetlands. Structures built in wetlands would require evacuation for everyone, including their cars, if a severe storm hits.
Aesthetic Appeal and Community Character
While aesthetics may not seem to be a significant concern to some people, it is a top consideration for the project’s opponents. Bar Beach is a beloved location for not only Port residents but North Hempstead residents, and being right next to a massive apartment building is not part of the view residents expect to see when visiting the beach.
“All of the taxpayers in the Town of North Hempstead have put a lot of money into the whole process of the Bar Beach renovation,” saidTheHimpler.master plan of what Bar Beach should look like has been completed for some time now, and a large apartment building that would use parkland for parking was not considered. page 4

soon as we grant this, we will get a whole string of apartment buildings on the shore line. So we are trying to avoid that before it even begins.” In this situation, New York’s State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR) has to be considered. According to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) website, SEQR “requires all state and local government agencies to consider environmental impacts equally with social and economic factors during discretionary decision making.” This process has to be used when more than one development is being constructed on a property or when designat ed parkland will be used for development.
“What [FEMA] advises is that area should have very well attended wetlands, not buildings,” Himpler said. The parcel of land has already experienced flooding from severe storms, and the chance of erosion and flooding will just increase with higher tides due to climate change.
In January of 2021, the Town of North Hempstead identified the type 1 consider ations from the SEQR that need to be consid ered concerning the proposed Southern Land Company plan. Those considerations are as

Residents Steven Catrone, Hilary Himpler and Edda Ramsdell have been working to compile research, statistics and relevant in formation to provide elected officials and Port residents with reasons to stop Southern Land Company from pursuing Port Washington.

ort Washington residents have been working hard to bring awareness to Southern Land Company’s (SLC) proposal for a luxury apartment building on Shore Road. The parcel of land Southern Land Company has scouted out is located at 145 West Shore Rd., next to North Hempstead Beach Park, more commonly known as Bar Beach.Southern Land Company is asking for the parcel of land to be changed from a Residence AAA zoning (Single-family residencies) to a Multiple Residence zoning. The proposed multi-resident building would be a 96-foot tall, seven-story building with 176 apartments on a two-acre parcel. The construction of the building would not only be a massive eyesore to Port residents and all who frequent Bar Beach, but the building poses multiple threats to the environment and economy. The developer’s plan for West Shore Road violates six zoning codes, jeopardizes natural assets and encourages dense urban development, according to critics. Zoning code violations include parking and intrusion on park land, population density violation, height violation, and depth side, back and front violation.

According to the Harbor Management Plan, their goals include increasing wa ter-related recreational opportunities within and along the shoreline and protecting the harbor’s natural environment, surface water quality, wetlands, coastal fish and wildlife habitats.“There are 220-something species of bird in [the Hempstead Harbor Woods] in addi tion to fox, deer and bunnies,” said Himpler. The Town of North Hempstead Planning Office provided a supplement to the full environmental assessment form that details aspects of the SEQR type 1 considerations. The impacts on noise, light and odor expect environmental remediation and subsequent construction period to last from 18 to 24 months. Common construction impacts listed include traffic detours, transport and use of heavy equipment, temporary work lighting and stormwater diversion for an extended duration.
“In terms of the meeting, I think it went very well,” said Himpler. “They got the mes sage. The whole subject of the meeting was to stop selling and using marketing ploys when you have been sitting on the land since 1986 and never done anything to help it.”
“The environmental benefits of barging versus carrying the same material by truck on the NYC and Long Island’s roadways are enormous,” wrote Barker Aggregates. “The foreseeable impacts of reducing the capacity to carry water-borne freight needs to be eval uated and addressed in all relevant sections… including traffic, air emissions, fiscal and economic conditions and greenhouse gas emissions.”
Resident Effort Catrone, Himpler and Ramsdell have been working hard to rally residents to oppose the SLC development. In March of this year, the team wrote a letter to the town of North Hempstead detailing their concerns about the development. The letter is signed by multiple neighborhood associations and civic organizations, including New Salem Civic Association, Port Washington Park Civic Association, Mitchell Farms Neighborhood Association, Montfort Hills Civic Association, Bayview Colony, Eastern Crest Civic Association, Beacon Hill Residents Association, The Harborside, and Transition Town Port Washington.
As a Port Washington history lover, Catrone explained that at one point, that land was all sand and gravel. That material was used to build skyscrapers in New York City. In addition, in World War I and II, there was a pier for ships to get in and out.
The letter to the Town of North Hempstead Supervisor and Councilmembers states: “The developers have shrouded their over-thetop sell job with the promise to clean up their environmental waste. This marketing assertion in itself indicts the owner(s) of the site for not maintaining nor remediating their shoreline property since purchasing it in 1986. As it stands now, failure to remediate the original site pollution and then continue to further pollute the site over many years negates their attempt to tout themselves as saviors of Hempstead Harbor. This is nothing more than a marketing/selling ploy to cover the costs of remediation under an IDA while continuing to pollute the area with too many people and their cars.”
“We had issues to sort out, and I think we were there about two hours,” said Himpler about the meeting. “A lot of stuff revolved around traffic concerns.”
Overpopulation and Traffic According to the 2010 census, Port Washington’s population density averaged 3,575 people per square mile. In the 2020 census, Port Washington’s population density grew to an average of 5,373 people per square mile. These calculations include Baxter Estates Village, Port Washington CDP, Port Washington Village North, Manorhaven, Flower Hill, and Sands Point. In Nassau County, the population density per square mile in 2020 is 4,902, significantly less than Port Washington. “We thought this was really telling,” said Himpler when presenting the data. “If you look at Nassau County, the population density for the whole county is less than what they’re trying to stick in Port Washington, and they haven’t even built this building yet.”
“The financial impact would affect all of North Hempstead, not just Port Washington,” said Himpler.
The parcel of land on West Shore Road is on the coast and across from 200 acres of the Hempstead Harbor Woods and Moutain Bike Trails. Critics say that 176 apartments filled with families jeopardize the safety of the nature preserve and aquatic life offshore.

Taxes in the Town of North Hempstead When large projects come to town, resi dents often worry about how their taxes will be affected. Catrone, Himpler and Ramsdell have researched the use of Industrial Development Agencies (IDAs) in projects such as SLC’s apartment building. IDAs are available in most counties and fund projects that increase employment. While there will be a lot of jobs in construc tion when the project is underway, when it is done, there is only going to be an estimated four to five full-time types of employment at the apartment building, explained Himpler. “[SLC] would get all this money, funding for their project. But the downside is they don’t have to pay taxes on construction materials,” explained Himpler. “So the county their fight to protect the Port coast from overdevelopment.ThelettergotCatrone, Himpler and Ramsdell a meeting with Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Deputy Supervisor Joe Scalero and District 6 Councilmember Mariann Dalimonte.
Current Property Lease Barker Aggregates, LTD is currently leasing 145 West Shore Rd. Barker Aggregates handles barge unloading and truck loading that serves Nassau and Suffolk counties. Port Washington is one of their two terminals on Long Island, the other being Port Jefferson. In March of 2021, the company sent a letter to the Town of North Hempstead regarding the March 2021 scoping session for SLC de velopment. As one of the five transshipment points for the Long Island Sound region, hindering or eliminating their services in Port Washington would have a regional impact on “traffic, air emissions, health and the regional economy,” according to their letter. Barker Aggregates supplied a chart comparing transportation modes to show how the elimination of their port would affect the transportation of their cargo. One inland barge of dry cargo transport is equivalent to 16 bulk rail cars and 70 tractor trailers. One inland barge of liquid cargo transport barge equals 46 rail cars and 144 tanker trucks.
Himpler gave an example of IDAs affecting residents in Glen Cove. Garvies Point in Glen Cove has a lot of newer developments, and when they started their first project with RXR Reality, taxes in the city went up for all residents.“Thepayments [from using IDAs] start low and rise gradually until you reach the total over 20 years,” said Himpler. “In this past year, [RXR Reality] told the [Glen Cove] board that they are moving the payout time from 20 years to 40 years. It is an abuse of power.”
Himpler pointed out that between 2010 and 2020, Port Washington experienced from page 3 substantial population growth due to devel opment in Manorhaven and on the coast of Manhasset Bay. But with the addition of SLC’s apartments, the population would only grow, which stresses human health, small business es and “Localinfrastructure.businessesgenerally think the more people living here, the more business they will get,” said Himpler. “But if there is no parking, people aren’t going to go.” “With boarded-up stores on Main Street, people think this apartment building will help, but shopping locally is what truly helps,” saidAnCatrone.increase in population means an increase in traffic, which is already an issue in Port“ThisWashington.townisbursting at the seams with traffic, especially on Beacon Hill Road to Main Street,” said Catrone. “We had a traffic study done in 1995 on Beacon Hill Road because of the traffic problems then,” said Ramsdell. “It was found 10,000 cars travel there per day. Now with the traffic study done more recently, it estimates 1,200 cars an hour.”
While at the time, the residents felt the town officials didn’t know much about the SLC development, they were still very receptive to the concerns laid out. Catrone, Himpler and Ramsdell have faith in their efforts and trust Councilmember Dalimonte to listen to their concerns. Catrone joked that Dalimonte is called for everything in Port Washington, even when a light bulb is out on Main Street, and she will fix it.
Noise, Odor and Light
The commotion and pollution that comes with the months of construction and the following emissions from added cars from the hundreds of people living in the apartments will affect the wildlife in the woods and water surrounding the area. Protecting the harbor’s viability and water quality is a priority that concerned residents are looking at when considering the SLC development.

According to the supplement to the full environmental assessment form provided by the Town of North Hempstead Planning Office: “Weekday traffic volumes on West Shore Road averaged 1,222 vehicles during the morning peak hour and 1,322 vehicles during the evening peak in the vicinity of the subject property. The 176-development is projected by the Project Sponsor to generate an additional 63 and 77 trips, respectively.”

The Harbor Management Plan for Hempstead Harbor was prepared for the Hempstead Harbor Protection Committee with support from Nassau County, North Hempstead, the Village of Sands Point, and other neighboring villages and towns.
The town and community put in time and effort to plan the beach renovation and create a place that would include charm and gen erous amenities. Cementing over parts of the beach disrupts the vision for the renovation that so many are looking forward to.

How can a mere 9.8 miles in a Long Island Rail Road system of hundreds of rail miles be so crucial? “What is the ripple effect throughout the system?” MTA Chairman Janno Lieber was asked at an Aug. 15 press conference with Governor Kathy Hochul.“It’spretty straightforward,” he replied at an event to herald the opening of the initial phase of the Main Line Third Track project. “This is the busiest part of the Long Island Railroad. Multiple branches feed into the mainline. So literally, any time there was any kind of a delay, it gummed up the whole system and a lot of those delays were due to the fact that you had those low bridges which frequently were getting struck. We eliminated those. Those grade crossings which were so dangerous and trains were having to slow down because crazy things were happening with those grade crossings. They were elim inated. It allows for much more consistent speeds and it also gives you the opportunity to work around a blockage when it develops. Altogether, [the third track] allows you to run 40 percent more service.”

“I spent 14 years in local government,” she observed. “Whenever our transportation agencies or the DOT had a project, they operated in a vacuum. They didn’t care what the locals thought a long time ago. Well, we have changed that at every single level. The community’s voices need to be heard, respected, their concerns addressed. As an example, speaking of New Hyde Park, Lieber said that service will increase by 67 percent on weekdays, from 56 to 94 trains.
She also touted the many ways 3TC con struction—a consortium of three companies that won the contract back in 2017—did it best to minimize noise and dirt and institute good environmental practices.
Lieber, addressing the same question, stat ed, “People may be traveling a little differently to and from work at different times. So more service means more convenience and with East Side access, Madison Avenue service to Grand Central, all of a sudden, for roughly half of our Long Island ridership, you’re going to cut 30 to 45 minutes off of their commute. So convenience and more service. That’s part of what we believe is going to attract people back to mass transit.”
Thanks to the removal of grade crossings, neighbors will not have to hear train horns and crossing bells. Traffic backups at the crossing gates and truck collisions with railroad bridges—which necessitated bridge inspections and therefore train delays—are also a thing of the past. Speaking of grade crossings, Hochul said that “We’ve had over six fatal collisions at grade crossings on the LIRR over the main line over a 10-year period. And in my book that is far too many families that are devas tated by that tragedy. That’s what we’re in the business of preventing as well. So better transit, less traffic, less noise.” The governor and Lieber affirmed that the project was on schedule and $100 million below budget.

Most of us started enjoying hamburgers at about three or four years old. My father was a butcher, so red meat was always a part of my mother’s repertoire in our family. As a result, I’ve had more than 60 years of experience with the great American burger. I’m a medium-rare kind of guy, but I’ve never turned down the occasional overcooked hockey puck. The MTA announced that the next 20-Year Capital Needs Plan Assessment (2025-44) will be completed by Oct. 1, 2023. They said “Engaging with the public and understanding the needs of our riders is critical to plan for the future of the transit system.” What ever happened to the MTA 202040 20-Year Capital Needs Plan? In 2019, the State Legislature directed the MTA to release this document prior to adoption of the $51 billion 2020-24 Five Year Capital Plan.

Apparently, those billions of people who have eaten those billions of McDonald’s ham burgers have it all wrong. If you want to truly enjoy the taste of your hamburger, you should flip it over.“Burger experts” from Friday’s claim that because the “top” of the bun is larger, if you flip it over, all the juices and flavor from the burger and toppings will be ab sorbed in the bun when you bite into it. In addition, your tongue meets the taste of the extras first and the burger second. In my experience, the burger isn’t inside my mouth long enough to taste much of any thing. The taste is irrelevant if I’m eating a fast-food hamburger while driving. I’m just trying to keep the ketchup from dripping on my shirt. To be honest, I’m not paying any attention to which side is up while trying to negoti ate traffic on the LIE. Because the suggestion came from the TGI Friday’s Instagram account, I thought it was just a promotion, a way to stir up traffic on social media. However, my job as a journalist is to not only comment on the news but to separate fact from fiction for you, my dear readers. To test the upside-down theory, I chose a Whopper with all the trimmings from Burger King. For those unfamiliar, the oversized burger patty comes topped with onions, pickles, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, and mayonnaise. The top half of the bun is rounded and much thicker than the bottom half. Since the Whopper requires two hands to maneuver from the wrapper into my mouth, I picked it up, turned it over, and took a bite. There was a flavor explosion as the toppings and condiments pushed their way through the “top” of the bun and onto my waiting taste buds. It was

One of my favorite ancient parables involves the story of an indigent woman whose children were constantly starving. One day, she came home with an egg. Lovingly, she gathered her excited children and said: “Dear children, you have nothing to worry about. I found this egg. But listen to me closely. And because of our patience, we’ll be rewarded with bounty and we won’t be hungry anymore.”

No Shortcuts Along Life’s Journey
The MTA will evaluate this list of projects. They have not been selected or funded but will be comparatively evaluated for consideration on a level-playing field for future Five Year Capital Programs. Why the need to evaluate the $6.9 billion Second Avenue Phase 2 project?. MTA has previously said that based upon receipt of a Full Funding Grant Agreement from the Federal Transit Administration, construction would start in 2023. Many of these projects would have to be admitted into the FTA Capital Investment Grant (CIG) national competitive discretionary system expansion core capacity program. They would be competing against others for future federal funding. It should be a higher priority for each operating agency including NYC Transit bus, subway and Staten Island Railway, MTA bus (the old private NYCDOT franchised bus operators taken over by MTA in 2005), LIRR and MNRR to first reach a state of good repair for existing fleet, stations including making all ADA accessible, signals, interlockings, track, power, yards and shops. The same is true for ensuring that maintenance programs for all operating agencies assets are fully funded and completed on time to ensure riders safe and reliable service

While the band’s downtime yielded Chaos in Bloom, along with 2020’s It’s Christmas All Over and last year’s EP 21, Rzeznick felt it was the logical response to psychologically responding to the world grinding to a stop in the early days of the pandemic.
What a difference a pandemic makes. Even though the world is two years-plus removed from COVID-19 throwing the world into a lockdown, music lovers are still enjoying the fruits of forced solitude. For Goo Goo Dolls fans, it’s in the shape of Chaos in Bloom, the band’s recently released 13th studio album. Recorded in Dreamland Studios, a remote space in Woodstock, NY, this collection of songs also marks the production debut of vocalist/guitarist John Rzeznick, who founded an approach the band had last taken on its 1995 breakthrough album A Boy Named Goo. “It was like sort of going to camp,” Rzeznick responded when asked about recording in this manner. “I wanted to get everyone away from the distractions. I love making albums in Los Angeles and New York because it’s exciting, fun and they have everything that you need. And the greatest studios in the country are all in Los Angeles. That’s normally what we do. And we did some of the overdubs and the final stuff out in L.A., New York and all over the place. But the main body of and put together in that fashion. That was an observation that I had made from watching live YouTube videos of us. The live show is a lot greasier and tougher. I thought that we should try and bring this into the studio. So it was fun in that way, because you’re actually getting to feel how Robby [Takac] and the drummer were playing together or how the three of us were playing together. It’s tight, but it still has a looser vibe to it.”

On July 13, the Nassau County Museum of Art (NCMA) introduced its new exhibit “Other Worlds Than This.” The exhibit explores both the supernatural and sub conscious mind. With a primary focus on Surrealism, the exhibition attempts to navigate a world beyond our own. Surrealism rose to pop ularity in the 1920s and flourished for years to follow. As the genre grew in popularity, leading surreal ists – Magritte, Tanguy, Dalí, Ernst and Masson, to name a few–emerged. The movement rejected rationalism, as artists believed that it suppressed their imagination and limited their“Yourartwork.guides are some of the greatest artists in history whose sense of the supernatural is so vivid that they painted and sculpted the spirit realm as if it were real,” Charles Riley, director of Nassau County Museum of Art, says. “That’s how the Surrealists opened windows to their dreams.” As Sigmund Freud began to publish his work on the subconscious mind, surreal ists became influenced by his theories. One of the leading characteristics of the Surreal ism Movement is its juxtapo sition of imagery. Surrealist artists often depict discon nected, strange or opposite objects in the same piece. The exhibit explores many of the themes that emerged during the Surrealism Move ment. With the juxtaposition of images, the exhibit gazes into subconscious patterns as patrons examine the meaning of these disjointed associations.Althoughthese pieces may seem full of distorted and strange connections, all of the pieces displayed attempt to explore the spirit world and deities that transcend. In addition to hosting some of the leading surrealist art ists—including Magritte, Tan guy, Ernst and Dalí—the mu seum explores surreal worlds through ancient sculptures and tribal textiles. Although these objects may not fit into the Surrealism Movement in the traditional sense, they, likewise, explore worlds full of spirits and extra-sensory p henomena.“Allthebig names are here: De Chirico, Dali, Magritte, Tanguy and Ernst,” Riley says about the diversity displayed in this exhibit. “But the super natural goes way back, three thousand years to ancient Olmec and Shang sculptures, Old Master prints and tribal textiles.”Themuseum hosted a reception where donors and friends of the museum had the opportunity to explore ethereal worlds further. At the reception Christian Winters, an English artist whose work is currently on display at the museum, at tended to host a seance. The seance was held at a table Winters—who had success fully completed seances at various other receptions— had designed for a previous exhibit. As guests gathered around the table, Winters at tempted to conjure the spirit of William Blake, a famous artist and poet. As the seance began, Winters sat blindfold ed with a pen in his hands as he attempted to summon Blake’s spirit. As the seance continued, Winters began to draw scenes that came to him. The exposition at the reception served as a con tinuation of the exhibit itself, guiding patrons through a world of spirits and phantoms, just as Surrealists reached into other seanceWinter’sworlds.performativeallowedvisitorsto see that process in real time. With the traditional surrealist artists and ancient sculptures and fabrics, the museum has once again hosted an exhibit that remains true to the movement it honors, while also serving its patrons with diversity. “No matter where, no mat ter when, the belief in spirit worlds remains as strong as ever, and this show brings it all vividly to life,” says Riley. The exhibit runs through No vember 2022. The museum is located at One Museum Dr., in Ros lyn. The arboretum, trails and sculpture garden are open daily from 9 a.m. to dusk. Nayyar Iqbal is the featured Long Island artist on this edition of Boulevard. Her style is impressionistic, working primarily in oils and mixed media, with bold colors and strokes. She is a Pakistani-American. Iqbal’s passion for painting encompasses street scenes and traditional old city buildings which are also balanced with images of daily life.

Iqbal has also participated in several exhibitions throughout Lahore, Pakistan where she obtained her Master’s Degree in Fine Art, with a focus on figure drawing. She has studied oil painting, watercolor, pastel, charcoal, acrylic and many other techniques. “I look forward to exhibiting more of my work soon,” she says. Over the past two decades, Iqbal has received many awards and recognition for her work, including “Best In Show” at a recent exhibit at Emerge Gallery in Saugerties in January 2022. She earned first place in a rotational art exhibit and second place in a competition at My Studio Port Washington. She has received honorable mentions from the Flushing Art League and in an Eastern Long Island exhibit for her work. Iqbal has been selected for many solo exhibitions also. “Being able to share and exhibit my work has been the biggest honor,” Iqbal says.

In addition to being an author, Pourmoradi has multiple outlets where she shares tips on female empowerment and leadership. Pourmoradi has built an incredible resource for young girls and women with an online blog, podcast and numerous workshops to spread knowledge and information on empowerment“WhenIwas a little girl, I grew up with a great deal of anxiety, and now I’m very transparent about being a woman living with anxiety,” says Pourmoradi. “But when I was a little girl, I didn’t know that I had a plethora of inner tools that already lived inside of me. We didn’t have an open dialogue about anx iety and mental health, it just wasn’t a thing, and there was a stigma associated with it.” “As I discovered this world of psychology and human potential, I started to really hone in on my own inner tools and learn how to calm myself down, how to take a deep breath and how to claim my power back,” says Pourmoradi.Aroundeight years ago, Pourmoradi began hosting empowerment workshops at her home in Great Neck. More and more parents began requesting specific topics to be covered, and the workshops grew. “Our goal is empowering girls, and just one person isn’t going to make as large an impact as we want to make,” Pourmoradi says. In 2015, she expanded the program to function more like a school, wherein other women could teach the workshops and make an impact while making a profit to create a career. Now, more than 180 differ ent facilitators are running the curriculum in different parts of the world.

“If there is any message that GIRLIFE has, it’s that every young girl is powerful beyond measure and simply having that knowledge is a game changer,” says Pour moradi.Pourmoradi’s dedication to empowering the next generation led her to write two books that guide girls and women to lead positive and productive lives. Her first book, XOXO, From A Girl Who Gets It , was published in 2018. Although the book is categorized as a children’s book, Pourmoradi likes to say that the book is for girls and women from ages five to 105 because it shares and acknowledges the powers that already exist within women of all ages.
Great Neck author and entrepreneur Melody Pourmoradi published her second book, Empowered Women Empower Girls. The book is a practical guide to inspire young women to lead by example and become the best version of themselves.
Pourmoradi’s most recent book, Empowered Wom en Empower Girls , was published at the end of 2021 and was inspired by the number one question people ask Pourmoradi: How do I empower my daughters and young girls in my life? “The fact of the matter is if we really want to empow er the next generation of girls, we need to empower ourselves, which is the real work,” explained Pourmora di. “It starts with mothers and teachers or mentors; if we are not embodying that true empowerment, then it’s really hard to pass it along.” The book is a downto-earth guide to inspire women to lead by example. 1930, an Arthur Hammerstein produced show with some material by Oscar, was a flop but is notable for being the last Broadway show starring W.C. Fields. After this, there was also The Gang’s All Here with Ted Healy, Free for All with Jack Haley, and East Wind with Joe Penner (all in 1931). And he contributed some material to Olsen and Johnson’s Hellzapoppin (1938).Then, around the time he began collaborating with Rodgers, one last major show without him: Taking a cue from Mike Todd’s 1939 Hot Mikado, Billy Rose produced Carmen Jones (1943) putting Bizet’s original Carmen score to a new contemporary libretto by Hammerstein, and an all-black cast, with Muriel Smith and Muriel Rahn switching off in the title role. As an all-black American opera with a tragic plot, it also bears a certain relationship to Porgy and Bess. One likes to think that the original Oscar Hammerstein, the songwriter’s grandfather who had a penchant for democratizing access to opera, would have been proud.
Hammerstein was the namesake of his paternal grandfather, Oscar Hammerstein I, impresario of both opera and vaudeville, and the son of Willy Hammerstein, genius booker of Hammerstein’s Victoria, New York’s top vaudeville theatre for a time. He attended Columbia and studied to be a lawyer but the lure of the family business was too great. Though he had promised his father he would steer clear of show biz, following Willy’s demise in 1914, he gradually worked his way in. Vaudeville vets starred in many of his early productions, many of them written in collaboration with Otto Harbach. Frank Tinney was in Tickle Me (1920) and Daffy Dill (1922). Queen O’ Hearts (1922) featured Nora Bayes and Harry Richman. Gypsy Jim, a straight play penned by Hammerstein in 1924, starred Leo Carillo. The operetta Rose-Marie (1924-26) is probably the earliest of his shows to be well-remembered, on account of its three movie versions and the many covers of the campy “Indian Love Call”. The 1936 screen version with Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald is undoubtedly the best known, although there was also one in 1954 with Howard Keel, Ann Blyth, Fernando Llamas, Bert Lahr and Marjorie Main. A 1928 silent version naturally had no songs but starred up-and-comer Joan1925sCrawford.Sunnywas one of a series of hit starring vehicles for Marilyn Miller and featured Jack Donahue and Pert Kelton, with music by Jerome Kern. It was made into a Hollywood film, also starring Miller, in Show1930. Boat (1927), based on the Edna Ferber novel is, in the view of many, the greatest of all Hammerstein shows and one of America’s favorite musicals. Florenz Ziegfeld produced the original production, with music by Jerome Kern, book by Hammerstein, and lyrics by Hammerstein and P.G. Wodehouse. The cast included Charles Winninger, Edna May Oliver, Tess Gardella (Aunt Jemima), Puck and White, Helen Morgan, and Jules Bledsoe. Paul Robeson for whom the part of Joe was written, appeared in later productions. This is a stellar line-up of talent, and they ended up producing a landmark, pivotal Broadway show, one of the first of the so-called integrated musicals (meaning the songs are integrated into the show, i.e., they help tell the story. Although this has to have been one of the first racially integrated shows, too). The (still) popular songs from the show include “Ol’ Man River”, “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man”, “Make Believe”, and Helen Morgan’s show stopper as Julie,There“Bill”.are three major film versions of the novel, the latter two based primarily on the musical. The 1929 version is based strictly on the book and is essentially a silent, with non-sync sound, music, a little audible dialogue, and just a couple of numbers from the show. It features Laura La Plante as Magnolia, Alma Rubens as Julie, Otis Harlan as Cap’n Andy, Neely Edwards as Schultzie and Stepin Fetchit as Joe. The 1936 version (the best all ’round) was directed by James Whale and has much of the Broadway cast, with the notable addition of Irene Dunne and Allan Jones. The 1951 updated, color version has far less charm, although we do have the bonus of Joe E. The alcohol content of most canned cocktails ranges from four to nine percent. Flocktails measures in right in the midrange with seven percent. The sugar content is low and the beverage is gluten-free. “The lemonade with cranberry combination surprises people in a good way,” Mangia said. “The full flavor and low carbonation intrigues people.”Thebrand launched last August.“This wasn’t exactly good for us because the timeframe for launching a new beverage product for Long Island is May to August,” Mangia said. “We started late and it took more time for stores to get involved, but it is happening for us now.”

Stir while cooking for 3 minutes, breaking up the veal into small pieces. Stir in the wine and cook for 2 minutes. Stir in the chicken stock. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil. Then reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes. While the sauce is simmering, cook the pasta in the boiling water per package directions.Remove the bay leaf from the sauce. Drain the cooked pasta and add to the simmering sauce. Stir and cook 2 minutes. Turn off the heat, add the butter and cheese, and stir until completely incorporated. Serve in a rimmed pasta bowl topped with freshly ground pepper.

Actually, the show was a money-loser from the word go.”
“My father was invited by one of his best customers to an event he was hosting,” Stellino explains. “My father asked if he could bring the food because he had this great connection to the butcher. He was a salesman all the time—I remember he had this blue, double-breasted suit with a white shirt and a great knitted tie that he had bought in Rome —I was in love with the whole thing. [My father] started laying out the meat. The barbecue was an old-school one made out of cast iron with the charcoal and the wood used to get the fire started. And even though we were up there in the mountains where the temperature was in the seventies, it was still warm. Next thing you know, he starts peeling off the jacket, the vest, the cigarette is still there. He’s got an undershirt on—I think you guys call it a wife beater. I’m looking at him and looking around and see everyone in the finest custom suits—beautiful ladies in jewels with long cigarettes talking—but everyone was looking at my dad. The man looked like [crap] to say the very least. He was schvitzing and I’m thinking, ‘I want to be him.’”
In the three decades-plus since he started out with a public television cooking show, Nick Stellino has penned 12 cookbooks. Nick Stellino grew up in Palermo, Italy, where his passions of cooking, fashion and watches have their roots.
And while Stellino didn’t have the background to run a kitchen, he took a job as a dishwasher and wound up apprenticing to become a head chef and going so far as to return to Italy and work without pay in a number of restaurants in his homeland. And while he eventually wound up as the head chef at Santa Monica restaurant Drago and shooting a number of pasta sauce commercials, that same quest for a new and interesting challenge led to his expressing to wife Nanci a desire to have his own television show. “I looked at my wife and said the money we put aside for a restaurant should instead go towards me going into television,” he recalls. “I wanted my own TV show. From there, it took me two years and 2,365 phone calls—2,354 no’s and one yes.”

Add the oil and the bacon to a skillet and cook over medium heat until the bacon starts to brown, which should be around 3-4 minutes. Take the bacon out of the pan and reserve the oil in the pan. In a 4 qt pot of salted boiling water, parboil the trimmed Brussels sprouts for 3-4Thenminutes.transfer to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking. When the sprouts cool down, dry them well with a thesproutsBrusselsAddtowel.thetohotbacon oil and cook, stirring well, for 5-6 minutes. Add the cooked bacon and cook one more minute, stirring well. Add salt and pepper to taste, then serve. and cook until all the clams
Place the bread, eggs, Parmigiano, and beef in a bowl and mix well. Using your hands, shape them into meatballs, about 2-1/2” in diameter. If necessary, use a measuring cup to make each meatball 1/3 cup. Set the meatballs aside while you make the sauce. Add the oil to a saucepan and warm over medium heat. Add the onions, thyme, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir well and cook for 3 heatauntilwinetheum-high,heatminutes.Increasetomedi-addMarsalaandstirreachingboil.Reducetomedium-low and cook until all the wine has evaporated and the sauce is creamy.Stirinthe beef stock and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the meatballs and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook for 35-40 minutes. At this point, the sauce should have been reduced by half and intensely flavored. Serve family style in a large bowl or on a tray topped with the Agglasatu sauce and, optionally, topped with chopped chives.

Betting On Himself Raised on constantly hearing about “...a land on the other side of the sea called America, where anything is possible,” the fiercely independent Stellino made his way across the pond, where he landed a job as an insurance company market research analyst. When he quickly realized that he had a better understanding of the financial assets he was being hawked by the sales reps who were pitching him, Stellino informed his wife Nanci that he was going to offer his services to the head manager at the local Merrill Lynch office. He sailed through the interviews, trained at the World Trade Center and spent the next eight years making his nut, despite admitting to being “...the worst stockbroker you’d ever seen.” What Stellino did have was the passion that drove him, particularly when it came to an idea he’d fallen in love with. It’s a character trait that carried him into the kitchen, when he decided to quit this lucrative chapter of his life after a client lost 30 percent of his net asset value after Stellino was instructed by higher-ups in what he later realized was a rigged transaction. And once again, guidance came from family in the form of an exchange he had with an uncle who was on his deathbed back in Italy. “My uncle was in so much pain and so full of morphine, that he wasn’t making any sense and had turned into a former ghost of the man he was,” Stellino shares. “At one point, the nurse asks us to leave because we’re tiring him out. Everybody wanted go hug and kiss him and were crying—me too. And then he grabs my hand as I’m leaving, looks at me straight in the eyes and says to me in Italian, ‘Don’t let go of your dreams. Don’t do things that keep you prisoner.’ How did he know that I was so unhappy? I never spoke about it. I hardly spoke about it to my wife or my mom or dad. What did he see and how did he awaken like that? It kind of impacted me in the most—it was devastating in a certain way.” Rolling The Dice Stellino returned to the States, evened up his ledger and walked away from a finance job in a year where he made the most money in his career up to that point. It was at this juncture the epiphany came that he wanted to open a restaurant with money he’d saved, something he’d have to explain to his wife, who was unaware of his radical career pivot.“This was the kind of decision we always made together,” he explains. “I knew I was in for some problems. I popped in and says that I had a great idea. Because I loved cooking and we were cooking all the time, I said that I was going out to buy a restaurant and was going to go into the restaurant business. She looked at me—and by the way she wasn’t upset. I’m thinking, ‘Man, this broad is awesome.’ She says that was great but maybe wouldn’t it be better to get a job at the restaurant first? Just to see how things work out and I could learn how to run the business.”
Genes Make The Man Family is at the epicenter of what makes Stellino tick, dating back to the adoration he had for his mother (“...she was not only beautiful, but the most delicate woman I’ve ever seen in my life.”) and his art salesman father, who helped introduce him to his lifelong love of food and cooking while commandeering the grill at a client’s summertime soiree that Stellino and his family were attending (“I wanted to be the guy people look at because he’s the only one who has the magic to make the food taste like that.”) Stellino’s cooking origin story is worth recounting where we find our then 12-year-old hero more interested in his host’s teenage daughter before his pater familias won over the cooking progeny’s attention.

Living The Dream Three-plus decades and 12 cookbooks later, Stellino is at a point in his life where he gets to pursue his whims, one of which is sharing his love and passion for“YouSicily.can pretty much say I’m retired,” Stellino says. “I reached a point in my life that the first thing I do when I get up in the morning is decide what I’m going to cook today and what is the new thing that I’m going to learn, even if I fail. The only project I’m interested in now is a history of Sicily and the importance of Sicily as an element. It’s so incredibly spread throughout America in the little part of Italian-Americanism that we see in action every day. But I do want to show Sicily for the beauty that it is. I don’t want to do one of these shows where you see me on the forefront of a beautiful view behind me when I go, ‘This is the most beautiful thing you can see. Let me take you down there.’ Before I do a show like that, I’m going to shoot myself in the head.”Ifthere is anything Stellino is proudest of it is how he’s transferred his love of food, culture and storytelling to a devoted public television fan base at a time when culinary shows on the Food Network and HGTV have come to the fore in the past couple of decades.

“When it comes to my teaching people about cooking, it’s about me teaching them about something I love and I want them to learn to love it the way that I love it,” Stellino says. “You not only have to take baby steps, but you also have to be skillful in showing people how you do it, how people can do it themselves and look how easy it is. If you look at any of my cooking shows from the beginning to the end—even my most complicated recipes, including demi-glace and reduction of sauces—by the time you watch it, you’ll feel like you can do that. That is my greatest skill, otherwise, I can tell you there are tons of people who can cook better than me, are better-looking than I am and are far more successful than I am. But that one skill that I just described and the way I described it where you’re not afraid and you come in and feel like an old friend is teaching you. That’s my skill and I don’t need to put it up because what you see is pretty much what you get.”

BY CHRISTY HINKO Wendell Pierce (Serious Money, The Piano Lesson, The Wire, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) and Sharon D. Clarke (Caroline, Or Change) are set to reprise their acclaimed performances as Willy and Linda Loman, for which Clarke received the Olivier Award for Best Actress and Pierce was nominated for Best Actor while on Death of a Salesman on the Young Vic / West End production in London. Blvd. had a chance to speak with Clarke about this amazing opportunity to bring such a staple in American storytelling back to audiences, and to reprise her award-winning role as “ILinda.feel very blessed to have a chance to find out more about these characters,” says Clarke. “I cannot believe that I have just finished Caroline, Or Change on Broadway and am coming back to do what is considered America’s Hamlet; it is a classic and I am doing it with Wendell.” She is overjoyed. “For Wendell to come to London and tell the story of Death of a Salesman and then to be able to bring it back to his home [country] and have it seen by America is just phenomenal,” saysTheClarke.anticipation is already growing for what may be dubbed a transforming production.“New York will be seeing what it knows as this classic play about the American Dream, but seen now through African-American eyes; you can see the glass ceiling; you can see why that dream, at that point, in that time is actually impossible; it is an impossible dream,” says Clarke. “It is what sends Willy down that wormhole of madness.” This production of Death of a Saleman tells the exact same story, but with a Black cast; the Lomans are an African-American family in a predominantly white capitalist world. “When we did the show in London, a lot of people asked, ‘Did you change the script? You must have changed the script,’ and we would say, ‘We have not changed anything,’” says Clarke. “For example, when Willy goes into Howard’s office, you now see an older Black man begging a young white man to keep his job. When the package is dropped on the floor, he is told not to pick it up because they have office boys to do that. When Howard drops his matches and Willy picks them up, he does all of the things that he tells his son not to do. When you see a black man doing that with a white man a younger white man and belittling himself, groveling, it is so visceral that you cannot escape what the script is telling you.” Clarke said the difference in the cast heightens, enriches and deepens the script in a way that makes you see Death of a Salesman in a completely different way. Is there pressure to bring such a well-known play to Broadway? “I am bringing this story to people in a way that they have never seen it,” says Clarke. “I am part of history; there is no greater feeling than to be making history in a way that brings this story to Americans that they have never seen before.”

Having started out in the mid’80s, the Goo Goo Dolls operated in the college radio world at a time when bands from that scene hopped in the van, played clubs around the country and regularly dropped into regional radio stations to promote their latest release. At the time, the trio was calling distinctly non-alt-rock label Metal Blade home at the time and barely scraping by. That all changed when the Goos blew up via the 1995 smash single “Name,” which was a Billboard Hot 100 Top 5 hit. It was a seismic career shift for the band which Rzeznick remembers having mixed feelings about at the time. “[We blew up when] KROQ out in Los Angeles started playing the song,” he recalled. “At the time, they were sort of the taste-makers for the rest of the country. They started spinning the song and then it just caught on. In a way, there was this strange guilt that came with it. I guess they call it impostor syndrome because we’d grown up in this very underground, do-it-yourself scene and we never expected to do anything more than open for Soul Asylum and for The Replacements. And then boom—this thing just happened and it was crazy. But our manager said to just keep our heads down and keep working. To be honest with you, I think we worked harder than any other band or our ilk at that time. We just kept going for it and going for it and going for it.” Currently on the road with a new batch of songs and plenty of hits to play, Rzeznick and company are happy to be out of the house playing to fans. He was also happy to share some of his favorite singers with Long Island Weekly

“It is extremely important to me to give back and help people and animals in any way that I can,” she said. “It simply just made me feel good knowing that I was helping others. Whether it was donating food, blankets and toys to the animal shelter or volunteering my time to assist underprivileged children while they learn the game of soccer. It’s important to take a step back and look at the world and realize that there are many other people that didn’t have the correct resources to obtain the opportunities that I, so gratefully was able to obtain.” Her work at the animal shelter fulfilled a lifelong passion to help animals. “I loved animals my whole life,” Howard said. “So, I thought instead of my friends and family giving me a birthday gift, I would ask them for any food item that I could donate to the shelters. I thought it was a great way to open the eyes of others to maybe do the same and I loved the feeling of knowing that the animals were benefiting from my actions. I believe it’s always imperative to put your own personal life on pause for a minute and really find out how you can make a difference, even if it’s small.”

As a senior captain, Howard led the Massapequa Chiefs to the Nassau County, Long Island and New York State championship. On the pitch, she has earned All American honors, was selected All-State and was named CoNassau MVP. A midfielder and forward for the Chiefs, she has scored 32 goals for her career. Howard was 4 when she started playing with the Massapequa Soccer Club and quickly developed a love for the sport. She joined the soccer team in seventh grade at Berner Middle School and, after a two-year hiatus because of commitments with her travel program, rejoined the Chiefs as a sophomore. While a 10th-grader, the Massapequa High School team won the county and Long Island championships.

Lia Howard is a member of a pretty select club. In the rich tradition of the Massapequa girls soccer program, Lia became just the fifth Massapequa player to be selected as the Gatorade New York State Player of the Year. “It feels unreal to receive this award; I’m so honored,” Howard said. “I love the competitiveness of soccer. I think it’s so fun, and it is one of the best feelings in the world to step on the field and know you’re surrounded by great people.” For that honor as well as her impressive senior season, Howard is the Athlete of the Month.
Howard credits her success to the support of her parents, coaches and teammates, especially co-captains Mia Baldinger, Jess Lynskey and Gianna Savella. The team is led by head coach Bruce Stegner. But Howard is more than just a great soccer player. She volunteers at a local animal shelter and also donates her time working with a youth indoor soccer program.

WRITING THE RAILS
Part Seven:
After spending an afternoon wandering around Little Tokyo in Los Angeles, my friend and I got to the train station around 3 p.m. It was a beautiful station that had a piano that was available for anybody to play, which someone did practically the whole time we were waiting. Once we got on our last Amtrak ride, my friend and I were basking in nostalgia, reflecting on all of our train memories of playing UNO cards or struggling to sleep in a train car full of snoring strangers. It was then announced that there was an issue with the last train car and it would have to be fixed. We ended up not moving until about three hours later. After another sleepless night on the train, we stepped off the train into Flagstaff, AZ, and met with a man who was renting out his car through an app called Toro. We expected to get a plain-old sedan but the car ended up being an electric hatchback Mustang because the car we rented had to go into the shop. We all became nervous when he found out we were going to the Grand Canyon with it, but after giving us instructions on how to charge it and handing us the key, we went on our way, charging the car first. To put an extra 20 percent of charge on it took 30 minutes. But we were on our way, and got to the Grand Canyon around 4 p.m. I remember walking towards it, feeling tingles in my feet. I’m not afraid of heights, but whenever I approach something like that I always get an intrusive thought about jumping off. It was quite an amazing thing to see. We walked along the south rim, stopping almost every moment to just stare at it. Getting there late ended up working out for us because we got to be there for the sunset, which gave the canyon a red tint. My friend and I stayed there until the sun went down, just looking at it and listening to music. Since we had the car for the night, we decided to go star gazing too. We got a little closer to the entrance to the park, as we didn’t want to risk getting lost in the dark Arizona wilderness and laid down on a rock. We did this until we heard what we think might have been a coyote. So then we watched by our Mustang.Buteven there, where there was more lights from cars and businesses, the sky lit up like a Christmas tree. We even got to see a very faint Milky Way. The next morning, we left at around 11 a.m. to go to Sedona, which was an hour from us. Sedona was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before, with red rock formations almost everywhere you turned. I was also intrigued by the town’s spirituality and fascination with vortexes that many believe to be all over Sedona.Inone of the parks my friend and I were exploring, we found one of the vortexes. I think I felt it, but my friend said she didn’t. We ended the day at the airport overlooking all of Sedona for the sunset. We sat there in awe, while also reflecting on the fact that this would be the last landmark we’d see that summer. But in some ways we were happy, as we were both getting homesick. But Sedona was not our last day. We had another full day in Flagstaff, and decided to relax and walk around the town even spending about an hour sitting in a dog park... dog watching.Wespent the following day traveling back home via flight. We were not looking forward to it, but our experience was not that bad. Now that I’m back home settling back into my life and routine, it feels like this trip was a whole different lifetime, a whole different chapter. I’ve learned so much about the country, it people and history beyond what they teach you in school. My positive experiences with people, which included some who went out of our way to help us along this journey, heavily outweighed the negative experiences. I’m glad I did this and I encourage anyone to go and do whatever adventure they’ve had on their mind.

The Monfort Cemetery was declared a town landmark on July 23, 1985 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The Monfort Cemetery has 154 internments from 1737 to 1892 and includes many notable gravesites includ ing members of the Onderdonk, Dodge, Hegeman, Rapelje, and Schenck families. Carmela Cipriano Longtime Port Washington resident and St. Peter of Alcantara parishioner, Carmela Cipriano died peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 14, age 93, three months after the passing of her husband, Frank Cipriano. In 2014 she and Frank left their home of sixty years on Bar Beach Road to live on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. After attending New York Medical College in Manhattan to become a nurse, she worked, married, and raised four daughters. Known as Milly to her family and friends, she was especially devoted to family life. Although Mamati oversees and manages other studios in the F45 franchise, the Port Washington location is the first he has opened on Long Island.

“Because most of the instructions throughout the classes are guided on the screens, the coaches are able to just focus on the members in the room,” studio manager John Mamati explained. This time allows trainers to focus on their students more closely. Coaches are able to walk around the room, correct members’ form and challenge their classes. This personal attention on students is something that Mamati believes is unique about F45. “It’s as close as you can get to a personal trainer experience in a class setting,” Mamati continued. With so many gyms and training stations in Port Washington, Mamati shared what he believes sets F45 apart from others: “[Members] don’t need strength training at the gym on [their] own because [they] can get that here in the studio. I don’t think you can really get that piece of it outside of this.”

Nikkis Pet Services set up a spot to watch the dogs brought to Live At Five. wine or beer from The Bubbly Bar. No Good Burger Truck served unique burgers, chicken, fries, and mac and cheese. Pizza Company 7 brought their fire truck custom fit with a wood-burning pizza oven to make various fresh pizzas for families to enjoy. After eating from either of the delicious food trucks, the ice cream truck was ready to serve ice pops, soft serve, and milkshakes. Live At Five is a perfect event to bring the whole family to jam to fun music, play with other children and enjoy the beautiful scenery on Manhasset Bay.
