Mineola School District Submits Reopening Plans Despite What State Says

chool is set to start in just a few weeks, but according to Governor Cuomo many local school districts didn’t submit their plans for in-person instruction on July 31.

“There are 107 school districts that have not submitted their plan—for those 107 school districts, how they didn’t submit a plan is beyond me. If they don’t submit a plan by this Friday [Aug. 14], they can’t open,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. “Parents don’t have to send their child. The parents are responsible for the health and safety of the child, and they’re not going to send the child if they don’t believe the plan makes sense.”

Out of the 107 school districts that didn’t submit their in-person learning plans, the Mineola School District was one of them, which the district denies.

Outages Lead To Outrage

ho can forget Sandy?

Though the moniker “Superstorm” was not official, its effects were outsized.

For the record, the National Hurricane Center dubbed it “Post-Tropical Cyclone Sandy.”

Sandy exposed how unprepared residents and governments in our region were for a weather event of that intensity and magnitude. Apparently, the lessons of Sandy were not totally taken to heart.

The swift passage of Tropical Storm Isaias on Aug. 4 caused the most damage and power outages since that 2012 storm. Long Island was the most affected area in the northeast, thanks to wind gusts that topped hurricane speeds.

PSEG-Long Island was subject to widespread criticism after it left some of its customers without power for more than 10 days. Worse, its touted communications upgrade failed, with customers unable to contact the company.

In a letter, Town of Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin pointed out that “In fact, more than long restoration times and inaccurate estimated times of restoration, Long Island customers were most angered by their inability to contact the company in any way during the storm to report that power was out.

This, despite repeated emails and text messages from PSEG, in advance of the storm, assuring customers of the company’s preparedness to deal with upcoming weather and reminding them that they could report outages by calling a particular telephone number, sending a text message to the company, making a report through the PSEG app or the company website.”

Governor Andrew Cuomo directed the state’s Department of Public Service to investigate the performance of numerous utilities during the storm.

new reality and the reckless disregard by utility companies to adequately plan for tropical storm Isaias left tens of thousands of customers in the dark, literally and figuratively. Their performance was unacceptable,” Cuomo said in a statement.

PSEG-LI reported that 420,000 customers were without power at peak outage. As of 10 p.m. on Aug. 12, the utility claimed that virtually all power had been restored.

The morning after the storm, the Long Island Senate Majority delegation stood in front of PSEG’s Long Island office in Melville to call for an investigation by New York State Attorney General Letitia James into the utility company’s handling of the storm.

“Constituents have been contacting my office to let me know that they have been unable to get through to PSEG to report downed power lines, outages and fallen trees. This complete failure of PSEG-LI’s communication systems, especially amid a pandemic, is unacceptable,” Senator Kevin Thomas (D-Levittown) said.

The senators also asked that Verizon Wireless and the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), PSEG_LI’s oversight agency, be investigated.

By all accounts, these failures extend to every portion of Nassau County, leaving many ratepayers in the dark, struggling to find answers.”

She went on to “call upon the leadership team of PSEG to announce plans for a post recovery review of communications protocols and devise backup plans. A repeat of the same mistakes is simply unacceptable. These problems should have been corrected after Superstorm Sandy, not faced again with Isaias.”

Curran also wants the utility to compensate customers who suffered economic losses thanks to the storm.

Hurricane Season

At the dawn of the hurricane season, the Long Island chapter of the Red Cross held a press conference at its Mineola headquarters to bring together stakeholders to discuss the hurricane season, and how the ongoing pandemic will affect preparations.

“Disasters won’t stop, even during a pandemic,” Neela Lockel, CEO of the chapter, said. “Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 and early reports

predict an above average season with three to six storms reaching major hurricane strength. But because of COVID-19, getting prepared will look a little different than in other years. We are urging residents to adjust their preparedness planning to the new health threats brought on by the pandemic.

Make time to build an emergency kit in the event that you have to evacuate or shelter in place.”

County Executive Curran praised the county’s Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Steve Morelli and his team, and observed, “I feel that we have learned so much from Superstorm Sandy at the county level in terms of our response.”

National Grid Director of Emergency Planning Joe Gilliard and PSEG Long Island Emergency Preparedness Manager Larry Torres also spoke, affirming that the utilities had likewise learned from Sandy. In addition, both hailed the response to the pandemic and how service had been uninterrupted despite the challenges.

“Our employees have been working nonstop over the past six years to increase the resiliency of the electric system,” Torres said. “Since 2014, they have improved the reliability on approximately 99 percent of circuits identified for improvements, from the Rockaways to Shelter Island. That means we installed stronger poles, stronger wire and stronger hardware, all in an effort to remediate any storm impact.”

Further, thousands of tree limbs with potential to down electric lines have been removed.

County Approves Funding For Glen Cove Treatment Plant Bulkhead T he Nassau County Legislature voted unanimously on Monday, Aug. 3 to approve additional funding for a new marine bulkhead that runs along the Glen Cove Sewage Treatment Plant located nearby Hempstead Harbor.

Several years ago, initial county funding was approved for replacing an existing bulkhead. However, when design and construction administration consultants H2M Architects + Engineers inspected the area surrounding the bulkhead, soil and groundwater testing revealed low levels of contamination.

H2M and the Nassau County Department of Public Works worked closely with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to amend the project. The

original repair costs were $117,520.

Additional costs of $54,960 brings the total cost to $172,480.

“I am so pleased that the new approach to this project, which was the brainchild of a successful collaboration between multiple levels of government and H2M, will prioritize the long-term health and safety of our precious waterways,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton said. “I’m grateful to my colleagues for their unanimous vote and continuing to prioritize the preservation of Hempstead Harbor.”

Two-Family Home Burns In Manorhaven Fire

aureen Boggio, a Manorhaven resident and U.S. Census worker was knocking on doors in Manorhaven on Monday, Aug. 10 when she saw a large cloud of smoke in the sky. At first, Boggio thought the thick cloud of gray smoke was coming from a burning car, but quickly realized the smoke was coming from the second floor of the house next door, at 51 Dunes Ln. “I ran up to the building and I saw that it was a house fire, not a car fire,” Boggio recalled. “It smelled very bad.

And when I got near the house, there was a family in the backyard of the house, a father, two boys and two of their friends. The flames were very intense—blowing out the windows.

You could hear all the cracking of the windows bursting and flames were shooting out.”

Once Boggio noticed the house was on fire, she shouted to the family to get to safety while she dialed 911. After hearing the commotion, employees from PSEG who were working on the power lines nearby came by to offer

their assistance to the family.

“A group of PSEG employees ran into the yard and carried the boys over to me across the street,” Boggio said. “I just tried to keep the [boys] occupied and not overwhelmed.”

According to Boggio, while they waited for the fire department to arrive, several residents also ran over to the burning home with fire extinguishers to

try to put the fire out.

“Neighbors were running over with fire extinguishers,” Boggio said. “There was a big neighborhood rally to get everybody out.”

After the family was safe and the fire and police departments arrived, Boggio left the scene. As she was walking down the block, a gentleman who happened to be the second resident living in the

two-family home asked what was going on ahead. Boggio relayed the information about the burning house to the second resident, who became visibly distraught.

“It was very sad news to have to relay to someone,” Boggio said.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire, but the home was completely destroyed. Boggio hopes the community will step-up to help the family get back on their feet. Boggio believes the family’s children go to Manorhaven Elementary School, where her own children also attend. She plans to contact the Manorhaven Elementary School principal to let her know about the fire.

As of publication, Alex Kovacevic Deputy Clerk for the Village of Manorhaven stated that he is trying to get in touch with the family to set up a GoFundMe page to help the familiy replace some of their possessions.

Several residents asked for an environmental impact study to be conducted, as well as a traffic study to see how future developments might affect the area. Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte stated that she has had several meetings over the past few months with the Steering Committee regarding this agenda item.

“We’re amending the code to make it very restrictive,” Dalimonte said.

“There are a lot of residents on this committee. There are property owners on this committee. It’s been a give and take.”

Dalimonte stated that she would be meeting with the Steering Committee to discuss the concerns residents had reiterated during the meeting to see how the rest of the committee feels.

After hearing several more comments from residents, Supervisor Judi Bosworth reminded residents that this was not a public hearing, but merely

a vote to hold a public hearing during their next meeting.

“There’s no question Port Washington is a very beautiful community and it is thought of as a waterfront community,” Bosworth said.

“Of course that’s the goal for it to be maintained as a waterfront community. This moratorium has been in place now for 2.5 years, which is from what I understand is unprecedented. Having the set date [for the public hearing] gives us the opportunity to hear what the proposed code is. Everyone will have the opportunity to talk about why they think it’s a good compromise or why they may not think it’s a good compromise, but [setting the date for the hearing] gives us the ability to have that public discussion.”

The board will be holding a public hearing regarding this item at their next meeting, which is scheduled for Sept.

lessia Sansotta-Ingrasselino is a miracle baby who just celebrated her second birthday at Patrizias of Long Island in Hicksville on Sunday, July 12. Mother Dianna Sansotta-Ingrasselino was joined by husband Michael, her sister Angelina Sansotta and special guest Dr. Rachel Ruotolo to celebrate this significant milestone. What made this event so special? The fact that on March 6, the then-20-month-old child was mauled by a dog, leaving multiple bones, tendons of the eye, eyeball, jawline and skull exposed and fractured. Over the next month, Alessia would go to three separate hospitals, endure hours of surgery and flirt with a serious near-death situation unrelated to the initial attack.

Italian Feast Canceled Due To Pandemic

ellini Lodge 2206 is a New Hyde Park based philanthropic organization whose roots run deep in preserving Italian culture and tradition. Every year, Cellini Lodge puts on a feast, celebrating what’s to love about being from lo stivale, ‘the boot’. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this year’s celebration has been canceled. The five-day feast was originally set to take place Wednesday Aug. 19 through Sunday Aug. 23 at Michael J. Tully Park.

Anthony Calabro, president of Cellini Lodge 2206, said not having the event is unfortunate.

“Not having the feast was very disappointing,” he said. “The members look forward to it. They love the comradery, they love being together. Without the volunteers, we can’t have the feast. They make it happen and they do it for nothing. They love their heritage, their culture and the sense of community.”

Over the past five months, Cellini Lodge 2206 has had to cancel many, if not all, of its events.

“It’s disheartening because a lot of our members, especially our older members, they look forward to doing things with the lodge,” he said. “We run events at least once a month, if not, once every two months.”

“We do a zeppole tent, which is the most popular, we have a pasta tent, pastry, beer and wine. We also bring in some outside vendors who sell merchandise and also do sausage and peppers, gyros, pizza, [and] ice cream; it’s phenomenal,” she said.

Modica said not having the feast is a huge loss, financially speaking.

“Now we’re trying to do some fundraisers because we don’t have the money coming in from the feast and we need operating expenses,” she said. “We are putting together a cookbook. We are getting recipes from different members—recipes that are meaningful to them and that are original. It’ll have all types of food of any nationality. It could be entrée, dessert, whatever people want to submit.”

Calabro wants to resume normal activities soon.

“What I’m looking forward to and have to make sure is that when we start to come back together, first of all, make sure it’s safe for my members. I cannot do anything unless I know it’s absolutely safe, especially when a lot of them are elderly,” he said.

Modica has big plans for next year’s feast.

“What I’m hoping to do is to bring in more vendors, change the entertainment so it brings in more of the younger [20s and 30s]. A lot of our members are on the senior side so we want to vary our membership,” she said.

School District Says It Submitted Back To School Plans Despite What Governor Says

School is set to start in just a few weeks, but according to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office many local school districts didn’t submit their plans for in-person instruction that were due on July 31. Districts that fail to meet the deadline would not be unable to provide in-person learning this year.

“There are 107 school districts that have not submitted their plan—for those 107 school districts, how they didn’t submit a plan is beyond me. If they don’t submit a plan by this Friday [Aug. 14], they can’t open,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement.

“The main arbiter here of whether a school district has an intelligent plan to reopen and whether people have confidence in that district’s plan: It’s going to be the parents and it’s going to be the teachers, and that requires discussion, and that’s going to be a dialogue.

Parents don’t have to send their child. The parents are responsible for the health and safety of the child, and they’re not going to send the child if they don’t believe the plan makes sense. A teacher is not going to come back into the classroom if they think the classroom is not safe and that’s right. The school district has to have that dialogue by the [Aug.] 21st to fully comply with our rules.”

“We submitted our plans on time and have a receipt from NYSED,” Mineola Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Nagler said in a statement to Anton Media Group. “In addition, our plans have been posted on our website since July 31. From when closed in March right through today, Mineola Union Free School District has understood that the process of reopening would involve extensive community outreach. Our district has employed several means of

engaging our community stakeholders in conversation about how to reopen safely. We have conducted five parent surveys and held multiple virtual meetings for both our parents and our staff. We did so before Gov. Cuomo announced Friday that school districts were required to do so. We are thankful for working for such a supportive community and our plans reflect their input.”

As part of the safely reopening plan, all students and faculty will be required to wear masks in all situations except during a designated mask break.

Principals will work with teachers to establish mask breaks that will occur only when six feet social distance can be maintained. Nurses will provide information to staff and students on proper use, removal and washing of face guards too. The protocol also applies to any visitors approved to enter the building after completing the affirmation.

The district will also maintain a cleaning schedule that comports with all CDC recommended guidelines and products. Principals have coordinated with each head custodian to establish frequent cleanings in all classrooms and trafficked areas. All surfaces such as door handles, bathrooms, and table/desk surfaces will be wiped down several times during the day.

Great Neck Brothers Compete In West Coast Olympics

wo Great Neck brothers recently participated in the National AAU Junior Olympics where they placed nationally in their competitions. Great Neck North Middle School seventh grader Georgios Stergiopoulos and his third grade JFK Elementary School brother Argyrios excelled in their respective events after training with their father during quarantine. These talents achieved the All-American status with their various nation-wide rankings.

In an effort to keep the boys moving during quarantine, their father, a previous athlete, introduced his sons to Olympian sports: discus throwing and shot put. Throughout quarantine, Stergiopoulos instructed them in training sessions to learn the sports.

“It was very tough, yet I knew there was going to be a positive outcome. We would train about four hours a day,” Georgios said. “We would practice our throws in the morning, do our sprints and at the end of the day we would complete the speed and strength

training workouts.”

The boys’ ambition to excel during hot training days was especially incredible to see, according to their father, who appreciated his sons’ willingness to keep learning and practicing the Olympian sports.

Just as each child wished to accomplish, they reached high levels of achievement in their specific events.

Their success led them to qualify for the AAU National Junior Olympics in Florida where they competed against others from across the nation.

At the national competition, each child achieved All-American status with their nation-wide rankings.

Georgios placed in third for discus throwing and fifth place in shot put.

His brother placed in second for shot put.

“The hardest part of training was the frog walks,” Argyrios said. “In the competition, the hardest part was to wait your turn because I was so anxious and excited to get the shot and throw.”

Given the skills that both brothers have, they intend to continue training together. Georgios hopes to represent Greece in the Olympics. He feels inspired by his dad who has won medals as an athlete as well as his virtual coach who is a current Greek Olympian.

Stergiopoulos chose to register their sons for the West Coast Olympics in Las Vegas to expose their sons to the exhilarating feeling of a competition.

“The USATF and AAU organizations post qualifying local and regional events that lead to National Championships and Junior Olympics,” Dr. Sotirios Stergiopoulos said. “Many of those [events] were cancelled and the only remaining were the West Coast AAU Junior Olympics and the AAU National Junior Olympics.”

Argyrios wanted to make his family proud, being that they traveled out of state to compete and had family watching via livestream. Georgios said he was focused on making himself proud as well as his family.

“It was extremely hot, nearly 120 degrees,” Georgios said. “I had the opportunity to meet a former Olympian who happens to be the father of someone I competed against. I felt special to have my name posted on the digital score board. I wanted to do well and go home with some medals and a good ranking.”

ver since Long Island entered Phase 4 of reopening, Village of Farmingdale Mayor Ralph Ekstrand has been proud of how his community has latched onto public health mandates that has made his downtown a safe place for both residents and visitors. These efforts have been enough to make Farmingdale a must-visit destination that was included on the Downtown Deals Travel Pass, a new free mobile app spearheaded by Discover Long Island (DLI) and both the Nassau and Suffolk County IDAs (Industrial Development Agencies).

Roughly 100 companies in Great Neck, Rockville Centre, Greenport, Huntington, Patchogue and Farmingdale signed up to be part of this program designed to boost recovery efforts across the region, providing economic stimulus through incentivized marketing efforts for small businesses, restaurants, and attractions in an easy, mobile-friendly way. It’s an initiative that holds specific significance, given how summer rituals have been upended in unforeseen and unprecedented ways by the pandemic.

Ekland for one is thrilled to see his community be part of this app.

“I’m really honored that the village is going to be included in this app for stay at home vacations,” he said. “I think it’s phenomenal.”

At www.discoverlongisland.com/ deals, participants can sign-up for a Downtown Deals Travel Pass. A link is then sent to their mobile phone, which opens the passport and directs the user to add the button icon to their home screen, where they can access it any time. There is never anything to download and minimal space is taken

up on a user’s phone. Once the user is ready to redeem their pass, they simply hand their phone over at the ticketing or checkout counter to access their deal. The program being driven by DLI, the region’s official destination marketing and management organization charged with furthering the tourism economy. It’s an out-of-thebox approach DLI president and CEO Kristen Jarnagin felt was needed at a time when the economy is reeling.

“The $6.1 billion hospitality industry has been the hardest hit industry in our region as a result of COVID-19 and the small businesses in our downtowns need immediate assistance to drive economic recovery,” she said. “We encourage residents and visitors to utilize this digitized platform to explore the endless hidden gems in the vibrant downtowns that are the fabric of our community.”

Ekland feels efforts like encouraging social distancing and mask wearing for all are a big part of what have made his community an attractive and safe destination in the summer months.

About 18 A-frame signs advocating social distancing, hand washing and mask wearing have been spread throughout the downtown area, pocket

parks and wherever people are congregating. In addition, outdoor eating has been embraced and local non-dining businesses have worked hard to ensure their neighboring eateries maximize any available space.

“Many of the merchants are letting their neighbors use their sidewalk and/ or loading zone to do outdoor dining,” Ekstrand said. “We’re all responding in a very responsible way. I think it’s great that the businesses are working with each other to network and promote each other.”

Most importantly, residents are buying into these public health mandates.

“Greater than nine in 10 people are wearing masks,” Ekstrand said. “People in Farmingdale are self-policing about masks, which is also very good.”

All Hands On Deck In Village After Storm

“But the things that are in our control,” went well, according to Mayor Peter Cavallaro.

Speaking at the Aug. 6 board meeting—the first held in person since March—Cavallaro praised the village employees for their actions during the damaging storm.

“I’m happy and proud that our staff—not just the DPW [workers], the ones that put their backs into it—but also our village hall staff who coordinated [the response]. And our code enforcement people who at times were almost like police officers, providing public safety and traffic control and all those kind of things. So it was all hands on deck and everybody did their job.”

As of the morning of the meeting, according to the mayor, 10 streets were still closed because the trees had downed power lines and PSEG-LI needed to repair the damage.

“We really did a hard press of PSEG to get that done today,” Cavallaro related. “Now we have to put the press on them to get electric power restored.”

PSEG-LI was criticized in many quarters for the failure of its communication system, which left customers unable to contact the utility to report outages or downed wires.

Cavallaro said he had been assigned a PSEG representative to communicate with directly, and the utility held daily conference calls with elected officials.

Still, the utility has a procedure in place to deal with restoring power, starting with the largest affected areas, and did not always respond to the concerns of elected officials.

In daily updates to his constituents on his Facebook page, Cavallaro expressed his frustration with the slow pace of restoration. PSEG-LI, in a statement on Aug. 12 , said that all power

had been restored to the 420,000 who originally lost power during Isaias.

Cavallaro said the village removed all storm-caused vegetative debris, and its building department, as happened during Superstorm Sandy, will waive any fees for storm-related building repairs.

When asked about the Westbury Fire Department’s activities during the storm and its aftermath, Chief Ken Gass Jr. said, “We responded to about 80 calls, and one working house fire.

We had numerous responses for trees on and through houses, power lines down, cars crushed by trees. We also responded to a roof that blew off a building and landed on the railroad tracks, shutting down all service east and west of Westbury on the LIRR.” Cavallaro summed up Isaias: “It was of very short duration, but it did a lot of damage.”

Amazon Facility Plans Unveiled

own of North Hempstead Councilwoman Viviana Russell recently arranged a virtual town hall hosted by Amazon to inform the residents of Carle Place about the “Last Mile Delivery Station” proposed at 2 Westbury Ave., Carle Place.

The distribution facility will make use of the former Waldbaum’s property, a 7.4 acre parcel. Its drivers will deliver packages to all of Nassau County.

Brad Griggs of Long Beach, a senior manager with the Amazon economic development team, led the presentation and stated that anywhere from 10 to 20 (depending on the season) 18-wheeled tractor trailers will deliver loads from the giant fulfillment center in Staten Island every day. Delivery hours are from midnight to 7 a.m., with occasional afternoon deliveries.

The trucks will travel southbound on Glen Cove Road and make a right turn onto Voice Road. The company will make use of the former supermarket’s existing loading docks, accessible from Voice Road.

The north end of the property borders Westbury Avenue, with residences across the street. Griggs assured his listeners that the tractor trailers will not be using Westbury Avenue to enter the premises.

start arriving at 9 a.m. and the vehicles will be loaded starting at 9:30 a.m. According to Griggs, they will go out in groups of 18 starting at 10 a.m. with the last batch leaving around noon. The vans will exclusively use the Westbury Avenue entrance, as will the drivers in their personal cars.

Griggs noted that the delivery schedule is meant to minimize the effects on rush hour.

The facility is expected to employ at least 50-plus “associates” starting at about $15.50/hour with what Griggs called “comprehensive benefits.” Managerial positions start at about $60,000 per year. Griggs did not say how many managers will be hired.

The company will also hire part-time flexible

workers as well as independent contractors to make deliveries in their private vehicles. The latter will arrive between 2 and 2:30 p.m. and will be paid between $20-24 per hour.

Kevin Ketterhagen of the Carle Place Civic Association asked about possible career fairs in this time of pandemic and wanted to make sure that Carle Place residents have a shot at those jobs.

Griggs replied that Amazon hoped to have the facility up and running in time for the holiday season, and could foresee an in-person hiring event in the October-November time frame.

A traffic study concluded that “trips generated by the proposed distribution facility are expected to be lower than would had been generated by the prior supermarket during daytime hours.”

Resident Peter Gaffney warned the Amazon reps that right-hand turns onto Voice Road would be difficult for tractor trailers, and since Glen Cove Road was one of the busiest routes in the county, it could cause traffic tie-ups. The left turn from Voice Road onto Glen Cove Road during rush hour would also cause problems.

Griggs replied that the overwhelming number of deliveries will take place overnight, and traffic will not be an issue then.

Saladino Discusses Ongoing Efforts To Tag And Track Sharks

own of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson joined with researchers from the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences to discuss recent shark activity, as well as their efforts in studying sharks and tracking their movements in local waters.

In recent weeks, there have been more than a dozen reported sightings from several beaches, which suspected several different shark species. This resulted in swimming restrictions on almost a daily basis at local beaches, including TOBAY. Officials reminded residents that beach staff both in and out of the water make their safety and protection their top priority, and outlined steps taken by lifeguards, bay constables and other marine units patrolling waters.

“While it may be a little unnerving to hear about shark sightings and the topic can definitely be a scary one, it’s important for us to understand that sharks are naturally found in Long Island waters,”

The supervisor noted that researchers, headed by principal investigator

Dr. Michael Frisk, worked with the town earlier this summer to arrange a research program off TOBAY’s shoreline. Dr. Frisk’s group, consists of multiple doctoral students including newly doctorate student Dr. Oliver Shipley, PhD student Lisa Crawford

and Research Technician Michael Fogg. The group studies movements and broader ecology throughout the coast and is conducted with a goal to establish knowledge of coastal-wide shark movement, as well as how these change over the summer months.

Councilwoman Johnson further explained that while shark attacks are extremely uncommon in our region, there are steps beach-goers can take to protect themselves and be careful in the water.

“In addition to avoiding wearing shiny jewelry, not swimming during night or dusk hours, and not wandering off from shore, general precautions and common sense are often our most important tool when enjoying our ocean waters,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Remember to stay safe and listen to the guidance of beach and lifeguard staff. We share our waters with some amazing creatures, and we just have to make sure we do so safely and appropriately.”

East Hills’ National Program Helps Seniors Grow

A

s soon as the pandemic hit, Clara Pomerantz, who serves on the Village of East Hills Board of Trustees, became highly creative. She launched a now widespread program called “Made You Smile.” It was dedicated to making seniors in nursing homes smile.

Here’s how the beneficial program works. During the coronavirus crisis, seniors in nursing homes are isolated and prevented from seeing their loved ones. Trustee Pomerantz’s ingenious program was to collect cards, videos and letters from participating children, and send these messages along to nursing home residents. It is an effort to warm the hearts of all solitary confined seniors.

The program became an instant success. With an even greater sense of sympathy Clara Pomerantz then added a new Pen-Pal Program. East Hills resident, 15-year-old Zachary Gerson, then was appointed by Pomerantz as president of the pen-pal program. He has now devoted much of

By coordinating emails, spreadsheets and deadlines, Gerson ensures that seniors are given student Pen-Pals to communicate with seniors and become their new-found friends.

Trustee Pomerantz credits Gerson with running with the ball and implementing this program.

The Made You Smile program, including Pen-Pal Program, now

operates nationally, with the newly rolled out program currently operating in New York and Florida.

Trustee Pomerantz said she expects to expand the program to California and Texas soon.

“It is such a rewarding experience to both younger and older generations,” Pomerantz said. “They share their thoughts and diverse backgrounds.

They develop friendships because

we match up Pen-Pals according to similar hobbies.”

Trustee Pomerantz invites anyone interested in having their children involved or having loved ones in a nursing homes participate to contact her for more information.

Whether it be the COVID pandemic changing how our world operates, the economy taking a hit, education being restructured, things have changed, The County Executive brings a detailed discussion regarding the state of the county.

How have you responded to the needs of Nassau County residents since the storm hit?

“We still have around 7 thousand residents in the dark and I think that we all understand that we are going to have some level of power outage with a storm like Isaias. We have an island that we live on. Most of the wires that we have are above ground, we have big, tall trees, high winds. We know that there is going to be some sort of level of outage. The outage turns to outrage when the people can’t communicate with PSEG Long Island, whether it’s through texting or calling or through the website. I’ve called upon PSEG demanding that they reimburse people who’ve been out for more than 24 hours for any food that’s been spoiled, any medication that had to be thrown out, any perishable items because of it. A lot of people have to work from home and if they’re down power they can’t charge their devices, they can’t connect and the situation is already challenged.

What are the top three obstacles that you and your team have identified and how are they being handled?

“Number one there is the health crisis and we’ve been through the horrible surge of the spring. I don’t think any of us will ever forget that.

We’ve seen since we started reopening back in the beginning of phase one, we’ve seen our hospitalizations decrease, we’ve seen our infections rate decrease while businesses continue to open up… I think our residents, and our businesses, our health department have all handled it really, really well. Now of course, you have the economic crisis, with

businesses shut down. While so many of our businesses have opened, many still cannot. For instance, catering halls, bowling alleys, gyms. All of these businesses that employ people that generate revenue, can’t open.

They don’t know when they can open and that economic uncertainty is very troubling for so many people. That brings me to our third challenge, the budget here in Nassau County. 40 percent of our revenue for our budget comes from sales tax. So, we are facing hundreds of millions of dollars in deficit. Specifically 750 million dollars for the last 18 months, for the last half of 2020 and all of 2021. I’m making a full court press for revenue recovery from the federal government. We just

have to really fight to get the revenue recovery that we really need, having been at the epicenter of this crisis.”

Are you satisfied with the plans that Nassau County school districts have in place for reopening this fall?

“I just did a call with our superintendents of our schools and I am assured that our 56 school districts have worked really hard to come up with the best plan for their community. As a public school parent myself, I know that our parents, our teachers, our children are all looking forward to getting back to some kind of normal again and getting back to the routine of school. They’re working

How do we make sure reopening schools is the best decision for our county?

“The number one priority of local government and my number one priority is the health and safety of our residents. You’re going to find with parents, and I have spoken to tons of parents, the full spectrum. From kids need to go back full time five days of the week, to keep the schools closed, to let them continue remote learning.

Then you’re going to find people somewhere in the middle who are looking for a hybrid model. They [the school districts] have to take a lot into account when it comes to transportation, lunch, little kids, recess and scheduling, and then with the older kids having to deal with sports and band and AP classes. There’s so much that goes into this. A lot of time, a lot of strategizing. So, they are putting together detailed plans. Each is going to be a little bit different.”

How has it been for you navigating the county through a pandemic?

“Well, you never know what you sign up for when you take a job and you just deal with it. You handle it. I made sure I was in constant communication with our hospital executives to make sure they got what they need. My team was singularly focused on flattening the curve. We have a wonderful health department.

Dr. Larry Eisenstein, who’s the Health Commissioner [Nassau County DOH] happens to be an infectious disease specialist. So, that certainly came in handy. He and his team have been fantastic. So, you just handle the problems as they come. You try to help people as you possibly can, and you know this year with sharks and storms and COVID and everything else we had to deal with, I feel like we’re just about ready for anything.”

ENSHRINE PROTECTIONS FOR TRANSGENDER RESIDENTS IN HUMAN RIGHTS LAW On Monday, Aug. 3, I voted in favor of an amendment to Nassau County’s Human Rights Law which ensures that Nassau County residents are protected from discrimination based on certain visible characteristics or traits, such as “natural hair texture” and “protective hairstyles.” This is a good piece of legislation, and I am glad it was adopted unanimously.

However, I cannot help but feel that the action we took was incomplete.

During the debate on this measure, I urged the majority to finally act upon my proposal to further amend the Human Rights Law and make it unambiguously clear that transgender and gender non-conforming Nassau residents are protected.

Nearly a decade ago, my predecessor Judy Jacobs first carried this legislation; since that time, state legislation

has been enacted to mandate equal treatment under the law for transgender New Yorkers.

Despite numerous opportunities, the Legislature persists in its inaction. Majority lawmakers have used the passage of state legislation as part of their argument against updating the human rights law locally. The actions of this Legislature reveal this to be an unjust double standard.

Consider the fact that Section 292 of the New York State Human Rights Law was amended last year to prohibit discrimination by expanding the definition of race to include “traits historically associated with race, including but not limited to hair texture and protective hairstyles, such as braids, locks and twists. Yet, we acted on Aug. 3 to amend our human rights law to address similar discrimination.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE Consumers always want cheap electricity. As a result, utility companies have been unable to charge the appropriate rates to allow for capital improvements to upgrade the existing power grid, substations and bury more power lines. Residents living in low density neighborhoods want to keep the price of homes low by accepting above ground power lines rather than bury them. With limited crews, it was impossible to reach everyone within 24 hours with such a catastrophic loss of power impacting so many customers at once.

I would gladly pay to cover costs for burying my power lines to insure more reliable

delivery. Unfortunately, this would not work unless my neighbors also agree to do the same.

Decades ago, elected officials attacked the Long Island Lighting Company for being overpriced and inefficient. They promised that creation of the Long Island Power Authority would be solve all our problems.

Having lived in Great Neck from the 1960s to now, I don’t recall LILCO being anywhere as bad as today’s generation of politicians claim that LIPA is. Voters deserve a rebate from the elected officials who committed consumer fraud by selling us a false bill of goods.

Furthermore, it is an established practice of this Legislature to make certain protections explicit under county law, notwithstanding the existence of similar protections under state or federal law.

Why was the bill we approved on Aug. 3, worthwhile and honorable as it is, held to a different standard by this legislature than one for transgender people?

The challenges faced by transgender Nassau County and New York residents have not abated. Transgender people experience elevated levels of poverty, housing discrimination, workplace bias and a risk of suicide and mental health challenges as compared to the general population. They are also frequently the target of fatal violence.

The Human Rights Campaign tracked no fewer

than 27 violent deaths of transgender or gender non-conforming Americans in 2019. Many were Black transgender women. At least 21 transgender people have been killed in America this year alone. It is painfully clear now in 2020 that gender identity and racial equity are inseparable.

I believe that enshrining county-level protections stemming from gender identity in our Human Rights Law is not only morally and legally correct, but consistent with the practices of this Legislature.

Our transgender community is under attack as we speak, and we have a duty to stand with them - just as we seek to do with other marginalized groups.

It is literally the least we can do.

America Will Never Be The Same The past six months have been a living hell for all Americans. Faced with a deadly virus challenge, stay-at-home orders and an economic depression, there is no doubt that our country will never be the same. When questioned about the high death toll, President Trump recently stated, “It is what it is.”

Those of us who have lived through this pandemic know that life will never be the same and we must learn from this nightmare.

How many years will it take before any one of us will attend a baseball or a hockey game? How much time will pass by before we are comfortable taking our family to a movie theater? When will you feel comfortable having a voluntary trip to a hospital or even go to the dentist?

When will we be able to visit grandma or grandpa in a nursing home?

There isn’t anyone of our readers who hasn’t known of the death of a friend, relative or coworker from the Covid-19 virus. The deaths of doctors, nurses, first responders and public employees doing their job has sent a clear message that our health care system has to be turned upside down. For the indefinite future, these facilities, along with nursing homes

and other adult care facilities, will have to be fully prepared for future outbreaks of other similar diseases, whether they happen or not.

Up to now, the federal government has failed miserably to take the necessary steps to protect our workers when their jobs are threatened by a new type of virus. Congress has appropriated trillions of dollars for unemployment payments and helped many small businesses stay alive with interim financial aid.

At the same time, these programs have rewarded undeserving companies with billions in money that should have gone elsewhere.

Last year, the political discussion centered on the issue of how much medical care should be available to the average citizen. Senator Bernie Sanders advocated for Medicare for All. Former Vice President Biden favors giving the public the option

to buy insurance from the government and not from the private sector. The political career of many a politician in Washington will be decided on what programs they support and how soon a real plan is adopted.

Once upon a time, Election Day meant millions of people trooping to the polls to cast their vote. In the near future, state after state will change its voting procedures to make it easier for people to vote by

mail. Some political camps don’t like mail ballots, but up to now 11 states vote by mail and in person, and there has been no proof of any fraud.

Along with that reform, it will be much easier for individuals to challenge incumbents.

America as we know it will never be the same after this traumatic experience. Change will come in multiple ways and hopefully they will all be for the betterment of the country.

Overcoming Dating Anxiety Many people experience anxiety during early dating experiences. Those who have connected via online dating sites/apps may be nervous about the transition from the digital to real world. Those who are being set up by others may approach the date with very little information about their partners. Finally, those who have met and initiated the date in person may experience anxiety over creating the “perfect first date.”

Senate Passes Veteran Mental Health Legislation The Senate recently passed the VFW-supported S. 785, The Commander John Scott Hannon Veterans Mental Health Care Improvement Act of 2019, which would support the VA as it continues to make improvements to veterans’ mental health care.

The bill covers a strategic plan for veterans transitioning from active duty, pilot programs integrating alternative therapies, establishing a VA and DOD clinical provider treatment toolkit, improving care and services for women veterans and expanding the mental health medical workforce.

Project Atlas could benefit from this bill as there is an opportunity to expand telehealth capabilities, suicide prevention and mental health programs to veterans in rural and highly rural areas.

Expansion Of Caregiver Program Planned For Fall The VA released the final rule on revising its regulations for VA’s Program of

Legislation Introduced DBQs On VA Website Senators Jon Tester (D–MT) and Mike Rounds (R–SD) recently introduced VFW-supported S. 4412 to improve the ability of veterans to access and submit disability benefits questionnaire forms. This important legislation would require the VA to publish Disability BOB FULLAM Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) on a public website.

TRICARE Select Enrollment Fee To Start Jan. 1 The Department of Defense (DOD) announced that TRICARE Select Group A retirees will be required

to pay an enrollment fee beginning on Jan. 1. Congress directed the Defense Health Agency in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 to implement TRICARE Select retiree enrollment fees, but delayed the implementation.

Group A is comprised of retirees and their family members if the sponsor’s initial enlistment or appointment occurred before Jan.1, 2018. The enrollment fee is waved for medically retired individuals and their family members, and for survivors of active-duty deaths. During TRICARE Open Season, which will run from Nov. 9 to Dec. 14, beneficiaries must set up an allotment with their regional contractors for the enrollment fee to begin on Jan. 1, 2021.

Beneficiaries who do not set up their allotment by the deadline will be unenrolled due to non-payment, and will have 90 days from termination date to request reinstatement.

Reflection On School Reopening There has never been a time when I wanted to go back to school so badly.

The past few months seemed surreal. When the first few U.S. coronavirus cases were reported in February, my mom took it very seriously.

She lectured me on sanitizing my school desks, binders and iPad. Naturally, I thought she was being ridiculous and never did any of those things.

After all, the cases were thousands of miles away and did not affect my daily life.

One day, I was not allowed to go to school. I was told that until I could be a responsible member of the family, school was out of the question.

Eventually I promised to sanitize my things, take a shower as soon as I got home, and change clothes. Things went back to normal, but it didn’t last long.

In the middle of March, when the school was closed, I thought it was just going to be for a few weeks. However, it soon became clear that none

of us would be returning for the rest of the school year. I learned to adjust to the new normal with virtually no outside contact.

I was glad that for the most part the Great Neck community did a great job with quarantine and proper social distancing. Teachers stepped up to quickly to make remote learning possible. Students adjusted to the new normal.

The cases of coronavirus came down significantly. We

successfully flattened the curve.

This summer has been different from the others. No summer vacation, or sleepaway camp. I had to admit I was frustrated at times.

As I am venturing outside more, I am also getting nervous. I’m not sure what happened. Perhaps it was the sweltering heat and the humidity, or the frustration of being cooped up for too long.

Suddenly, everyone seemed to relax on social distancing and take the virus much less seriously.

Last week, my mom and I went hiking. It was a hot, humid day. I understand that it’s not mandatory to wear a mask in open space. We did, just to be safe, and for the courtesy of others. I could count with my hands how many people wore masks in the state park.

Luckily most of the time it was pretty easy to maintain social distancing. However, there were some narrow passages where it became difficult to

stay away from strangers.

I understand that I should respect people’s freedom to not wear a mask, but it was very unpleasant when a group of people simply blocked my pathway, laughing and talking loudly pretty much into my face, without wearing a mask.

The experience was jilting. It got worse. After getting back to Great Neck, we decided to treat ourselves some frozen yogurt at Sixteen Handles. The second we went in, we caught sight of two people in the middle of the store talking to each other loudly and laughing without masks, despite the sign at the door mandating face masks. We left without buying anything. The blatant disregard for public safety was astounding to me. How could schools, or anything for that matter, reopen safely if people acted this way?

I have a mixed feeling about going back to school.

I want to see my teachers and friends again. But I also realize the risks the school

can pose to every one of us and people whom we come in contact with. School will become a center point, where each brings what he or she is exposed to. Although there have been few coronavirus casualties among children, we can still spread the virus and infect people we come in contact with.

It does not matter what President Trump, Governor Cuomo, or what the district decides. Ultimately we are the ones who decide whether schools can safely reopen in September and more importantly, stay open. What we do in the next few weeks, and during face-to-face learning, will be critical. We must learn to live with inconveniences in our lives, because after all, it is better than sacrificing human lives. We must do this, not just for ourselves, but the sake of everyone around us.

The Mineola School District congratulated all members of the Mineola High School Class of 2020 who graduated on Aug. 8 at Eisenhower Park. The unprecedented location was to accommodate the restrictions set by the pandemic and allowed families to celebrate the graduation with a parking lot ceremony.

The 127th commencement exercise still included in-person speeches from class president Ericson Velasquez, salutatorian Valerie Mallon and valedictorian Ankita Patel, as well as from Principal Whittney Smith and Superintendent of Schools Michael P. Nagler. Student performances of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Landslide” and “Remember Me” were streamed virtually and played through speakers for all to enjoy. Board trustee Patrick Talty also gave an audio speech to the graduates.

Following a slightly altered format, students walked across the stage to receive their diploma from board president Christine Napolitano followed with an elbow-bump with Dr. Nagler and Dr. Smith. There were several photo opportunities for students and their families as the graduates exited the stage.

Peter Mancuso from North Bellmore was elected president-elect of Kiwanis International and will serve as president during the 2021-22 Kiwanis year. He was elected during a Kiwanis International council meeting held in lieu of the annual Kiwanis International convention, which was canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He was first elected as a member of the board of trustees in 2016.

Kiwanis International has members around the globe who are dedicated to serving the children of the world.

Members meet the needs of children in their communities by providing necessities such as food and clothing and with enrichment programs that help children thrive, prosper and grow.

Mancuso has been a member of the Kiwanis Club of East Meadow for 33 years. He is a past president of the Kiwanis Children’s Fund, which was then known as the Kiwanis International Foundation. He served as distinguished governor of the New

York District in the 2003-04 administrative year, distinguished lieutenant governor from 1996-97 and is a past distinguished president of his club.

He has been honored as Kiwanian of the Year by his club and division.

Mancuso has chaired numerous club, district and international committees on outreach, growth, finance and leadership, among others.

Long active in events sponsored by his club, Mancuso said the importance of volunteer service was solidified for him at an event for disabled athletes.

“I once brought our daughter Cathy and a friend of hers to a Kiwanis service project involving games for physically challenged athletes,” he said. “Our children had attended many of these and were very comfortable around people with disabilities, but her friend was not. This made me realize that Kiwanis service was good not only for those athletes, but for our own children as well, which put Kiwanis in a whole new light for me.”

Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (D—Woodbury) is teaming up with Syosset High School rising junior Samantha Smith in her growing campaign to ensure that students whose families are struggling with financial difficulties can enjoy the full graduation experience.

Through her “Share a Moment” initiative, Smith is gathering gently used graduation gowns, which are then washed and matched to students in need based on their school colors. The idea came to her following her middle school graduation and her shock at how many of her classmates simply threw away the gowns, which can cost up to $100.

“I knew there were—and are—a lot of people all over the country who don’t have enough money to buy food or clothes, never mind a graduation gown,” she said. “I started thinking of ways I could do something to help. The need to take action became clear to me earlier this year as I witnessed the 2020 graduates’ concerns about not being able to attend a graduation ceremony. I forged that now more than ever, people would be able to empathize with those who aren’t able to attend their graduation ceremony any year simply because they can’t afford the gown.”

The Nassau County Bar Association is inviting Long Island residents to attend a free open house event to give homeowners and renters the opportunity to speak with a housing professional.

Due to COVID-19, homeowners and renters are struggling now more than ever to pay their mortgage and rent. Many homeowners have entered into a COVID-19 forbearance plan or have a COVID-19 related hardship.

Some forbearance plans are now coming to an end and many Long Islanders are still unemployed and are left wondering what to do next.

The open house will take place on

Thursday, Aug. 27, starting at 10 a.m. at the association’s offices, 15th and West Streets in Mineola. Housing counselors and lawyers from the vHomeowner Protection Program will be available to discuss homeowner and renter’s needs as well as explain current programs and payment options.

Seven families in the Westbury/ New Cassel community have weathered the heat waves this summer, thanks to some devoted North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center supporters.

Two of the women behind this effort—Dr. Betty Hylton and Marian Williams—are longtime members of the Leeds Place Advisory Council, and also members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.’s Pi Pi Omega chapter.

Since 1987, the women of Pi Pi Omega have been helping the Westbury/ New Cassel community in numerous ways, and the Guidance Center and its clients have been among the beneficiaries of their generosity.

Hylton reached out to the Guidance Center’s Dr. Nellie Taylor-Walthrust asking how Pi Pi Omega could help. Taylor-Walthrust immediately thought of the seniors who take part in C-GRASP, the Guidance Center’s Caregiver Grandparent Respite and Support Program, which provides support to grandparents who are the primary caregivers of their grandchildren.

The program is a partnership with Project Independence from the Town of North Hempstead’s Department of Services for the Aging, which serves seniors through the township.

“I was concerned because many of the seniors sought relief during

the hot summers at the Yes We Can Community Center, but with the coronavirus, they had no place to shelter,” said Taylor-Walthrust, who identified seven families in need.

The Pi Pi Omega chapter only had enough money to purchase three new air conditioners, but Williams, along with her daughter and son-inlaw, bought the four remaining air conditioners to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety. Sorority sister Elvira Daniels also was instrumental in the effort.

Marie Dextra, a Guidance Center C-GRASP client, says the donation of the air conditioner is making a big difference in her family’s life.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier recently announced a partnership with the New York Blood Center to collect donations on Thursday, Sept. 3, to help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic. The blood drive will take place from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville.

All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations.

The town’s blood drive will operate by appointment only, with

no walk-in donations accepted.

Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors.

To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the blood drive. Underage drinking is a serious health and safety problem in the Massapequas. Almost 30 percent of Massapequa youth (grades 11/12) report binge drinking or having five or more drinks in a row one or more times within the past two weeks— adding considerable risk to their health and well-being. In addition, 55 percent of Massapequa youth (grades 7-12) report drinking in “someone else’s home.” Anyone over the age of 18 is breaking the law if you give alcohol, marijuana or opiates to a person under the age of 21.

With the help of Massapequa Takes Action Coalition volunteers, Massapequa and Massapequa Park businesses are participating in MTAC’s Sticker Shock Campaign, which highlights the importance of parents serving as healthy role models and not providing alcohol (social hosting) to teens. Judd Apatow discusses The King of Staten Island

udd Apatow was searching for a funny actor who could fill in a minor role on the hit film Trainwreck. So who did Apatow turn to? None other than Manhattan’s Amy Schumer.

“Who is funny?” Apatow asked Schumer.

So Schumer took out her phone and searched for videos of Pete Davidson, then a quirky 19-year-old from Staten Island.

Apatow was sold immediately, placing Davidson in the film in a

small cameo role.

“Bill Hader was so taken by him that he recommended him to Lorne Michaels at Saturday Night Live, and he got hired,” Apatow said.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Davidson is blossoming into a comedy star on Saturday Night Live. But his best work yet might be the new hit film The King of Staten Island, which is directed, produced and written by Apatow.

“I talked to Pete about working on a movie idea together because I had a real instinct that this was someone who was going to do great things,” Apatow, who hails from Syosset, said. “We were kicking around a broad comedy idea for a couple of years, but it went nowhere. I gave him an idea, but I think it was a bad idea.”

Then, Davidson began speaking to Apatow about his mom, Amy Waters Davidson. He actually lives in her basement in Staten Island.

“Isn’t it true that if she met someone, you wouldn’t like it?” Apatow asked Davidson. “What if she met another firefighter?

“We started to have real conversations about his life and his feelings about it. We realized there was a much more grounded movie to write.”

And that’s when The King of Staten Island came to life.

The movie is loosely based on Davidson’s complicated life, playing the role of Scott Carlin. His mother in the movie is Marisa Tomei, who stars as Margie.

“She’s really funny and warm, but she’s also so real and this is a complex character,” Apatow said of Tomei. “She loves her son, she’s concerned about him and trying to be there for him. But, at the same time, she’s not quite sure what the boundary should be. She’s probably coddling him more than she should.

She’s a little lost about how to handle him at this point now that he’s in his mid-20s. He doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. There was a lot to play, and I knew Marisa would be able to do all of that.”

Scott, just like the real-life Davidson, lives at home with his mom and his sister, Claire (Maude Apatow). Stan, his father, died while fighting a fire while Scott was a child. Since then, life is not the same. He has Crohn’s disease, ADHD and other mental issues that impact his daily life.

“This movie is fictional, but it’s emotionally very truthful,” Apatow said. “We tried to design a story that would allow him to talk about his feelings, even though almost nothing in the movie happened exactly like this. You would still know everything about Pete by watching this story.”

Though Scott doesn’t have a job, he wants to be a tattoo artist, a dream he’s had for a while.

role as Scott’s mother. Just like Davidson’s conversation with Apatow about how he would react to his mother meeting a new man, you can see what he would be like in reality thanks to this film.

Margie meets Ray Bishop (Bill Burr) after Scott inks a tattoo on Bishop’s son at the beach. Bishop, a firefighter just like Scott’s dad, shows up to the Carlin household, only to fall in love with Margie.

Davidson’s acting ability is at the forefront of The King of Staten Island, showing the difficult experiences he’s had while facing multiple mental health issues.

Of course, Scott attempts to break up the couple because no one can replace his hero father. But Scott is just dazed and confused when Margie kicks him out. He heads over to his friend with benefits, Kelsey (Bel Powley), and she also sends him out the door.

Eventually, the unthinkable happens. Scott and Ray reconcile in an unbelievable way, uniting in an emergency room with Margie, a nurse, watching. And it’s all thanks to key decisions that Scott makes near the end of the film, after being kicked out of his Staten Island home, that really connects

everything to one another.

“I want people to fall in love with these characters,” Apatow said. “It is a tribute to first responders, firefights and nurses. It’s a reminder of a breed of people who dedicate their entire lives to serving others. It was important that we accurately presented those people who are willing to do that. In the film, Pete’s character is struggling to understand why his dad was willing to sacrifice himself for other people.

That’s part of the journey of the film.”

The 138-minute movie debuted on June 25, smack in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic, meaning it wouldn’t be a traditional release. Instead, it came out on demand for viewers across the nation, growing in popularity in a non-traditional way with Universal Pictures.

“Suddenly, drive-ins are essential to our lives,” Apatow said. “It was completely different from how we normally do it, but I had an instinct that this movie was meant to come out in this time in this way. It is about sudden trauma, loss, people who help us and I’m so glad people are getting to

see it in a time when they would get so much out of it, both in terms of entertainment and processing difficult emotions.”

The Blu-ray version of The King of Staten Island is now available online at www.thekingofstatenisland.com and in stores. And it features plenty of additional laughs that you won’t see in the regular film.

“There’s a really fun, fascinating commentary that Pete Davidson and I did that people will get a lot out of,” Apatow said. “We put a lot of mini-documentaries on the Blu-ray. I never know how I want to end a movie, so I shot multiple endings to this one. Most of them didn’t work at all. So it’s fun to see how I thought I could end the movie and why I was so completely wrong.”

Homicide Squad detectives report the details of a fatal auto accident involving a motorcycle that occurred on Aug. 11 at 6:18 p.m. in Woodbury.

According to detectives, while traveling westbound on his 2020 Yamaha motorcycle on Jericho Turnpike and approaching Crossways Park Drive, a 2016 Toyota Camry, being driven by a 28-year-old male, attempted to make a left turn from eastbound Jericho Turnpike into the Fairhaven Apartment complex and collided with the motorcycle. As a result of the collision, the 31-year-old operator of the motorcycle was ejected and suffered multiple trauma injuries. He was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to those injuries. The 28-year-old was also transported to an area hospital with a non-life threatening injury, was treated and released.

The investigation into this accident continues.

According to detectives, police responded to the Sunoco gas station, located at 205 Jericho Tpke. for a broken front door. Households notified of their children’s eligibility must contact the School Food Authority if they choose to decline the free meal benefits. Children of parents or guardians who become unemployed or experience a financial hardship mid-year may become eligible for free and reduced price meals or free milk at any point during the school year.

For up to 30 operating days into the new school year (or until a new eligibility determination is made, whichever comes first) an individual child’s free or reduced price eligibility status from the previous year will continue within the same SFA. When the carryover period ends, unless the household is notified that their children are directly certified or the household submits an application that is approved, the children’s meals must be claimed at the paid rate. Though encouraged to do so, the SFA is not required to send a reminder or a notice of expired eligibility.

The information provided on the application will be confidential and will be used for determining eligibility. The names and eligibility status of participants may also be used for the allocation of funds to federal education programs such as Title I and National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), State health or State education programs, provided the State agency or local education agency administers the programs, and for federal, State or local means-tested nutrition programs with eligibility standards comparable to the NSLP. Eligibility information may also be released to programs authorized under the National School Lunch Act (NSLA) or the Child Nutrition Act (CNA). The release of information to any program or entity not specifically authorized by the NSLA will require a written consent statement from the parent or guardian.

The School Food Authority does, however, have the right to verify at any time during the school year the information on the application. If a parent does not give the school this information, the child/children will no longer be able to receive free or reduced price meals (free milk).

Foster children are eligible for free meal benefits. A separate application for a foster child is no longer necessary. Foster children may be listed on the application as a member of the family where they reside. Applications must include the foster child’s name and personal use income.

Under the provisions of the policy, the designated official will review applications and determine eligibility. If a parent is dissatisfied with the ruling of the designated official, he/she may make a request either orally or in writing for a hearing to appeal the decision. New York Riptide Add Star Forward, Callum Crawford

he New York Riptide signed lacrosse star forward Callum Crawford to a two-year deal recently in hopes of improving after a 1-12 season.

The 35-year-old signing has spent 15 years in the National Lacrosse League and is one of only 11 players to have recorded 1,000 career points. He currently has 1,049 for his career.

The four-time NLL All-Pro is coming off a phenomenal season with the New England Black Wolves that saw him lead the league with 76 points that included 43 assists and 33 goals. He was a finalist to receive the NLL MVP Award.

Those statistics were compiled in a mere 11 games before the pandemic shortened the league’s season.

Crawford’s decision to join the Riptide is a reunion of sorts as he spent one year at Dowling College in Oakdale.

Crawford recently spoke with Anton Media Group about deciding to join the Riptide, the future of lacrosse on Long Island and his career.

What made you want to sign with the New York Riptide?

Having a full understanding of the whole picture from the ownership group down to the general manager to the coaching staff certainly helped. I know what they plan on building, not just what they want. It seemed like something great for me and my family to be a part of for a

What are your thoughts of the talent on this team?

There are some pieces on this team that are exciting to play with and then there’s a lot of working that goes into building the roster. The coaches and GM have a plan that will allow us to see some changes. We’ve already seen a lot of changes and being a part of that is exciting.

How do you hope to help the growth of lacrosse on Long Island?

really started to trickle into youth and club sports. We’re not just seeing what it can do for a young man’s growth in their field lacrosse game. I understand playing collegiately is not as appealing, but we’re working towards changing that. I think the passion and joy the sport can bring to kids is starting to be realized. It’s something they can genuinely fall in love with. It’s definitely a more fun, action-packed sport.

I watch a lot film focused on when I have not been good. I’m very hard on myself.

I’m my own worst critic. I admire the players that do things really well that I don’t and I try to find little things that they do to add to my game.
